HISTORY OF MUSEO MODERNO 12 pt
Museo Moderno is a typeface created by the Omnibus Type-Team. Specifically by the designers Pablo Cosgaya, Héctor Gatti and Marcela Romero. It was originally created as a new identity systsem for the Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires in Argentina. The typeface is a san serif that is geometric in nature. The designers took inspiration from 20th century European Avante-Garde Movements. The typeface itself has 365 characters and is configured to work with 25 different languages. It is a display typeface that is both simple but has its own unique personality. European Avante-Garde movements began with the Dada Movement in the early 1900’s. Dadaism was anti-conformity and lead to both surrealism and social realism. It spoke against nationalist and colonialist movements in its own right. This moevement inspired others to embrace the chaos and irrantional thought when it came to art. Avante Garde specifically focused on how to innovate the concept of forms and how to push these boundaries. These concepts are especially evendient in this type face, with the traditional forms of letters taking on a more modern and fluid system.
This radically formed typeface focused on bringing a modern take on letterforms that pushed boundaries and exemplified what the Museum of Modern Art Buenos Aires stood for. The creation of the museum was initiated by Rafael Squirru on April 11th, 1956. The decree states the ‘Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires shall be created, run by the Ministry of Culture whose main objective shall be to illustrate objectively and through documentation all the different manifestations of the spirit whose nature falls into said category’. The first exhibition took place in 1960 and featured incredible modern artists of the time including Jackson Pollock. Using the history of the graphic design and industrial works shown at the museum, the designers began to design the font in 2017. They were working with Martin Gorricho of Estudio Goricho. They wanted to emulate the museums voice and took inspirations from the work and exhibitions. But rather than creating a limited font, they wanted a font that could grow into the future with the museum and the evolving works show there.
