UCLA SCHOLARSHIP RESOURCE CENTER PRESENTS

CELEBRATION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

SCHOLARSHIPS RECIPIENTS

2021-2022 ACADEMIC YEAR

Dear National and International Scholarship Recipients and Finalists, Phi Beta Kappa Elects, UCLA Community and Friends, The UCLA Scholarship Resource Center staff and I are pleased to celebrate, with all of you, some major UCLA student milestones achieved this academic year. At UCLA, students have a vast number of opportunities and the freedom to choose their own direction. The national and international scholarship recipients and finalists and Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) elects who appear in these pages, have taken full advantage of the range of options that a UCLA education offers. The honors are well deserved, but the skills learned and understanding gained through attempting PBK or applying for scholarships, teach practical, repeatable benefits that serve students well into the future. Any UCLA student can follow in the footsteps of these exemplary students. The Scholarship Resource Center is here to support UCLA students throughout the scholarship process and encourage students to challenge themselves. We aim to mentor and support students, from the earliest stages, and we want students to graduate with less debt! The SRC’s Secrets to Winning College Cash workshop series, available during the regular academic year, provides an excellent starting point for those interested in scholarships. The SRC also serves as a resource for students interested in PBK—the United States’ oldest and most prestigious honor society (established in 1776). The best place to begin is a review of the honor society’s stipulations on the PBK section of the SRC website. You may also wish to review information on the PBK National website. Congratulations again to all our honorees. We are proud of you and your achievements! The impressive journey you took to make the most of your educational experience is inspiring and gives us all great hope for the future. Sincerely,

Angela Deaver Campbell Director, Scholarship Resource Center

The purpose of education is to instill in individuals the ability to see the world for themselves. James Baldwin

Dear Students, Colleagues and UCLA Community, As Assistant Director of the Scholarship Resource Center, I am UCLA’s advisor for nationally competitive scholarships. I am delighted to welcome you to this publication celebrating this year’s honorees, including students who were recognized as finalists and scholars. The Scholarship Resource Center coordinates UCLA’s endorsement/nomination process for several national and international scholarships, including the Marshall, Rhodes, Goldwater, Mitchell, and others. While the application process varies depending on the award, the common thread is that all nationally competitive scholarships require students to think hard and introspectively about their values and goals. For students who are interested in learning more about these exciting scholarship opportunities and the application process, I encourage you to review the program descriptions on the SRC’s website, and contact us with questions and to get started. We provide workshops and mentoring throughout the process. Applying for a nationally or globally competitive scholarship requires bravery – putting yourself out there – along with a substantial amount of work. Each of the students listed below has distinguished themselves in various realms, including academic accomplishment, research, leadership, creative endeavors, and civic engagement. During a time of global crisis, they have sought opportunities to challenge themselves and contribute to the wider community. The diverse range of experiences and interests represented here is an inspiring reflection of the richness and dynamism of our UCLA community. To the students listed: UCLA is justly proud of your accomplishments. I have learned so much from working with each of you, and I am excited to see what you will do next. Congratulations! Warm regards,

Rebecca Blustein Assistant Director, Scholarship Resource Center

Dear PBK Elects and UCLA Community, Congratulations on joining The Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the nation. Founded in the colonial era, Phi Beta Kappa recognizes individuals whose college or university career has shown remarkable intellectual curiosity and accomplishment in the liberal arts and sciences. In addition to the professional distinction it affords, membership in the society brings one into a widespread community—with nearly 300 chapters across the country and over 500,000 members globally. What unites this far-reaching network is the commitment to promote the founding ideals of Phi Beta Kappa in ways that speak to the challenges of our contemporary moment, by emphasizing the value of free inquiry and cultivating appreciation for the critical skills that the liberal arts and sciences bring to civic and cultural life. In other words, membership in Phi Beta Kappa not only confers an internationally esteemed mark of academic excellence; it also provides diverse lifelong opportunities to continue the mission of Phi Beta Kappa. For example, members may join and participate in local PBK associations, which foster continuing learning opportunities and programs for community engagement. The PBK National Arts and Sciences Initiative enables members to help promote the arts and sciences with local, state, and national policymakers. The PBK Key Connections Program provides valuable networking and career opportunities for recent graduates and young professional members across the country. This sample of Phi Beta Kappa’s ongoing and evolving activities, which embrace an increasingly diverse membership, illustrates the society’s dedication to fostering the civic, social, and cultural reach of the ongoing practice of critical inquiry. Warm regards,

PHI BETA KAPPA ELECTS’ QUOTES Prompt: “Phi Beta Kappa election recognizes high-achieving students who have challenged themselves with a broad course of study beyond the minimum general education, language and major requirements at UCLA. As an elect, UCLA’s PBK Selection Committee considers that your UCLA endeavors have embodied the PBK philosophy that love of learning is the guide of life. Please tell us about your educational journey and what led you to pursue challenging, diverse coursework at UCLA beyond the minimum requirements.”

“While my academic passion lies in the coursework related to my major and minor, I really

enjoy taking unique humanities classes that allow me to dive deep into interesting areas of literature, whether it be dynastic texts about Chinese gardens or myths and fairy tales. I read, write, and analyze differently in my MCDB courses compared to my humanities courses, and I value the way these differences have shaped me into becoming a more well-rounded student and individual.” “My educational options were rather limited in my hometown, so when I came to UCLA, I was dumbfounded by all the opportunities here - I just had to explore as much as I could.” “I have always enjoyed learning and pushing myself to my limit. I believe it is when I am pressured that I can achieve my best. This is what led me to pursuing challenging, diverse coursework at UCLA such as the Center for American Politics & Public Policy program’s research seminar.” “As I developed my interest in nonprofit, service work, I began to consider a second major in Communication and a minor in Entrepreneurship. All the while, I took Honors Collegium courses on topics like Philanthropy, or Art as Social and Political Commentary. I had many academic interests and came to enjoy pursuing them.” “I endeavored to challenge myself and learn as much as possible in all my courses because I believe what you get out of education at any level is what you put in. Even if I took a course that isn’t necessarily closely relevant to my academic or career goals….I believe all courses are connected to each other in one way or another, so I can gain a wide range of benefits by finding the connections and relationships between topics that may seem unrelated.”

“Beyond major and minor requirements, I just took classes that interested me. If I ever needed

another class for a certain quarter, I would just explore the entire registrar looking for classes that interested me. I took the same approach with my General Education (GE) Requirement classes. I would look at the entire list of GE classes and think about which disciplines I would enjoy further education in.”

“UCLA is a school with many opportunities and I would’ve felt like I shortchanged myself had I not explored those opportunities to the fullest. This has paid off – my job interviewers are frequently more interested in my work photographing the football team and protests for the Daily Bruin than they are in my relevant coursework, for which the grades speak for themselves.” “Taking challenging courses was a reflection of my desire to serve people with excellence. As a human, I was by nature designed to serve, care, love, and pour out onto others’ lives. I believe people should obtain the best that I can offer from my talents, time, and dedication, because I am a result of individuals who did not hesitate to overwhelmingly do the same for me.” “On my first day at UCLA, I became a pre-medical student (challenging on its own), pursuing a competitive, interdisciplinary major that required enormous success in STEM as well as Philosophy, Ethics, and Anthropology courses….I quickly added a language minor to the mix (a minor that had absolutely zero overlap with my major). Then I decided that I wasn’t quite challenging myself enough, so I applied to College Honors….All of this was great fun and I ended up being selected for Phi Beta Kappa, which has been a dream of mine ever since the 4th grade when I first watched the classic American musical “Bye Bye Birdie.”” “My single greatest fear in life is to die without having done anything worth being remembered for. The second would be to die without truly living. In my academic and athletic endeavors, I have never been one to shy away from the adrenaline rush-inducing novelty of a new experience.”
