MISSION Working together to build safe, nurturing and resilient families—from pregnancy to parenthood and childhood to adulthood—for generations to come.
PRESIDENT & CEO
Message
Thank you for making 2019 another memorable year for St. Anne’s. The legacy of transforming lives is alive and well just as it has been for 112 years, and I am hopeful and grateful to witness how we have evolved into the agency of tomorrow. By providing the tools that help build and empower thriving families today, and the innovative comprehensive services which secure brighter futures for generations to come. We say it takes a village. Our Board members, Executive leadership, dedicated staff members, donors, and volunteers all show up for our clients consistently. We have a strong village moving us into the future and bring their best each and everyday. As I reflect, I am inspired amid new challenges and opportunities; some of which have been beautiful moments to assist those in need of St. Anne’s support. This condensed annual report provides a glimpse into our life at St. Anne’s. We hope you will continue to be a part of our journey in 2020 as many of you have been with us yesterday, today and through tomorrow.

SPOTLIGHT
The Definition of
TRIUMPH:Teresa Alvarado Teresa Alvarado, has a unique perspective on St. Anne’s having been a resident twenty years ago, and now a current full-time Family Advocate for the transitional housing program at St. Anne’s. Today, she shares her wisdom and guidance with current residents knowing she would have benefited from supportive housing once she moved on from foster care. Like many of the young women who find themselves living at St. Anne’s, Teresa’s past circumstances are but a moment in time. Looking back, she recalls being relieved that she had a safe place for herself and her son, Jesse, to call home, while she was at the tender age of 16. She had experienced a 4

lifetime of hardship and had nowhere and no one to turn to once she learned she was pregnant. She thought she was going to be with her boyfriend and his family but when she went to deliver her son, the healthcare workers questions revealed answers that led to her being placed into foster care. She was extremely scared and lost. Teresa knew she was going to do everything she could to keep her son safe and healthy. After several failed foster care placements, where she felt families were more interested in her son than caring for her, she learned about St. Anne’s. She knew this was where she wanted to be as she recognized she needed to gain more parenting skills in an environment that equally supports and cares for mom and baby. She thrived in our program, and so did her infant son. With access to
full-time childcare, Teresa was able to maintain gainful employment so she could provide a comfortable life for her son. She participated in as many of our programs as possible and was introduced to the foster family agency, Extraordinary Families (once called Southern California Foster Family Agency), through our Workforce Development Program. There, she found a mentor in Marta Valle, who continues to work at Extraordinary Families. Marta gave her opportunities to learn valuable clerical, accounting human resources and development skills. Teresa has held at least two steady jobs simultaneously over the past 20 years and has focused her career in the social services world, where she feels she can make a difference. She recently returned to school and is working on her degree in social work.
Evening of Angels St. Anne’s honored our 2019 Angel Award Recipients, Board of Director member, Craig Darian; Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti; and Triumph Award Recipient, Teresa Alvarado.
She was encouraged to apply for her role at St. Anne’s by Marta, her mentor. She began in a part-time overnight role a little more than six years ago. It was clear that her passion and commitment to the young women in the community was important to her, and she was offered a full-time position as a Family Advocate in March 2018. In this role, Teresa focuses on helping young women navigate employment and educational opportunities while being a parent. One of Teresa’s proudest moments occurred in March 2011 when she purchased her first home. Her son continues to inspire her, as he pursues a career in the theatrical horror makeup field. Her hard work and dedication have created new opportunities for her, her son, and countless others she encounters as a Family Advocate at St. Anne’s. Her ability to pay it forward to the next generation has been invaluable. She embodies the each one, teach one spirit.
