Processional Hymn

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To his feet thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me his praise should sing? Praise him! Praise him! Praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favour To our forebears in distress; Praise him still the same for ever, Slow to chide, and swift to bless, Praise him! Praise him! Glorious in his faithfulness. Father-like, he tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame he knows; In his hands he gently bears us, Rescues us from all our foes. Praise him! Praise him! Widely as his mercy flows. 3

Angels, help us to adore him; Ye behold him face to face; Sun and moon bow down before him, Dwellers all in time and space. Praise him! Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace. Words: (436) Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847),alt.

Tune: Praise my soul

The Bidding given by

The Very Reverend Dr David Ison, Dean

Dear friends,we come together in this Cathedral Church to worship God

throughJesus Christ, and today we also give thanks to God for sixty years of the 59 Club: for the service and dedication of priests and people that created and encouragedthe life of this club; for the prayers of the faithful that have nurtured it; for its spirit of friendship and mutual support; for its support and inclusion of young people; and for the joy and freedom that it brings. As God has blessedthe 59 Club down the years,so we pray that its work will flourish in the years ahead:that good fellowship and shared values may transform the lives of many for good, and make a differenceto the world in which we live. And as we give thanks for gifts received, so we pray that we may all share them

generously with others: offering our dedication, service and prayer to all in need; friendshipand support to the lonely or oppressed; community anda

future for young people; and joy and freedom for those imprisoned in body or mind.

All these our thoughtsand prayers let us offer up to the throne of God in the words our Saviour Christ commanded and taught us, saying:

4

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Responses sung by the Officiantand the Choir.

O Lord, open thou our lips; and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning,is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Praise ye the Lord; the Lord's name be praised. Music: Kenneth Leighton (1929-88)

Psalm 13 How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord, for ever: how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I seek counsel in my soul, and be so vexed in my heart: how long shall mine enemies triumph over me? Consider, and hear me, O Lord my God: lightenmine eyes, that I sleep not in death. Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him: for if I be cast down, they that trouble me will rejoice at it.

But my trust is in thy mercy: and my heart is joyful in thy salvation. I will sing of the Lord, because he hath dealt so lovingly with me: yea, I will praise the Name of the Lord most Highest. Stand

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Chants: William Croft (1678-1727) and Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656)

The First Lesson read by

The Dean Here begins the second chapter of the First Book of Samuel Hannah prayed and said,'My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in my God. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in my victory.

'There is no Holy One like the Lord, no one besidesyou;there is no Rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogancecome from your mouth;for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are 6

fat with spoil. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap,to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honour. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he has set the world.' I Samuel 2. 1-8

Stand with the Choir,which sings

Magnificat My soul doth magnifythe Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded:the lowliness of his hand-maiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnifiedme: and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him:throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm:

he hath scattered the proud in the imaginationof their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things:

and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers,Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning,is now,and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Words: Luke 1.46-55

The Second Lesson read by

Jess Conrad, OBE, actor and singer

Here beginsthe eighthverse of the twenty-eighthchapter of the Gospel of Matthew.

Mary Magdaleneand the other Mary left the empty tomb quickly with fear and

great joy, and ran to tell the disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, 'Greetings!' And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them,'Do not be afraid;go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee;there they will see me.' While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests everything that had happened. After the priests had assembled with the elders, they devised a plan to give a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them,'You must say,"His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep." If this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.' So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story is still told amongthe Jews to this day. Matthew 28.8-15

Silence is kept

The Apostles' Creed I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believein the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. To all life thou givest —to both great and small; In all life thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish —but nought changeth thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; All laud we would render: O help us to see 'Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee. Words: (377) W. Chalmers Smith (1824-1908)
