Kenton Theatre

Kenton for Keeps

When the Kenton closed its doors back at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the future of the theatre was put into severe jeopardy. We were hopeful that people would like a theatre to return to when the pandemic began to ease and so we launched the KENTON FOR KEEPS campaign. We were humbled to have received so much support from the local community to help keep the theatre alive whilst our doors remained closed. However, the effects of the pandemic are still being felt in the entertainment industry, and the theatre’s future is still very much dependent upon the generosity of our audiences. We are still running the campaign to help the theatre weather the financial storm created by COVID and naturally we are grateful for all the support we have received so far. If you have already donated, if you plan to donate, or if you simply want to support the theatre by buying tickets for shows and enjoying a great night out, the team at the Kenton would like to thank you. You can add a donation of your choice when purchasing tickets online or at our box office, and you can also donate to Kenton for Keeps by texting: KEEPKENTON and the amount you wish to donate to 70085, for example text KEEPKENTON 10 to 70085 to donate £10. Texts cost the amount of your donation plus one standard rate message.

Our History

The Kenton Theatre is a stunning Georgian building which first opened in November 1805 with The School of Reform or How to Rule a Husband by Thomas Morton and the Kenton is one of the oldest working theatres in the country. Until 1930 the building had many uses including a non-confomnist chapel, a school, a church hall and a scenery store. In 1930 it became solely a theatre, now called The Playhouse, featuring professional repertory companies until 1950. In 1951 the proscenium arch was rebuilt and painted by local artist John Piper, who had taken on the lease of the theatre with Dr A E M Hartley. The theatre re-opened on 16th October 1951 as The Kenton Theatre with a production of The Glass Menagerie. Amateur productions were the mainstay during the 1950’s and then in 1963 the theatre went dark for four years. The theatre re-opened again in 1967 under professional management and was run by Henley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (HAODS) from 1969 to 2000. In 2010 the Trustees successfully negotiated the purchase of The Kenton Theatre freehold, funded through the generosity of the community. Box Office 01491 525050

Tales from Star City and The Letter of Last Resort A Cold War Double Bill Written by David Greig and Dan Dawes The Soviet Union - 1967. The Space Race is at its height. One woman at the centre of it all looks back on her dreams of being part of the great Communist movement, during one of the most dramatic decades of the Cold War. Some time later, on the other side of the Iron Curtain, the new Prime Minister is working late into the night when she is interrupted by a request - a letter needs to be written. It can only say one of two things, but its implications could change the face of the earth forever… This double-bill of short plays explores the brightest and darkest moments of Cold War history through two tautly written and gripping dramas. www.kentontheatre.co.uk

It will leave you questioning the nature of power and asking how our political beliefs can really change our lives - and the world. The war in Ukraine has opened our eyes to the devastating impact conflict has on children. War Child is on the ground right now with Ukrainian children and their families, but we must not forget other children around the world living through the terror of war, including those in Yemen where a brutal conflict has been raging for seven years. The Kenton Theatre is donating all its profits for this performance to War Child. Box Office 01491 525050

RENT Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme and set in the East Village of New York City, Jonathan Larson’s Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. It follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general.

Mark Watson This Can’t Be It

We’ve all had some pondering to do about the fragility of life recently, but don’t worry, skinny national treasure Mark Watson has it covered. At 41, he’s halfway through his days on earth, according to the life expectancy calculator app he paid £1.49 for. That life is in the best shape in living memory, but one problem remains, and it really is a huge one. Spiritual enquiry meets high-octane observational comedy as the ‘Taskmaster’ survivor, multi-awardwinner and “No More Jockeys” cult leader attempts to cram a couple of years of pathological overthinking into an evening of stand-up. Maybe we’ll even solve the huge problem. Doubt it, though. Box Office 01491 525050

Andy Fairweather Low

Fanboy

Andy Fairweather Low’s pedigree is the stuff rock dreams are made of. He first came to prominence at the vanguard of the new youthful expression of music as the lead singer in Amen Corner. The 60s saw them clock up hit after pop hit.

Joe has always been a nerd. In his teens, he hid it. In his twenties, he owned it. Now in his thirties, Joe is still obsessed with Nintendo, Star Wars, and A Muppets Christmas Carol. But he’s started to notice something about the way certain fans are behaving - something unsettling. When Joe finds himself alone, in his old room, sorting through his old things, he finds an old video tape, long forgotten. He dusts off the VCR, presses play and something strange starts to happen!

Songs such as ‘Bend Me Shape Me’, ‘Hello Suzy’, ‘(If Paradise is) Half As Nice’ are internationally remembered to this day. But if you were paying close attention you might have picked up a clue in the magnificent ‘Gin House’ to Andy’s future musical collaborations.

Dreams Come True

This brand-new production for 2022 authentically takes you on a rollercoaster ride through Elvis Presley’s career with video projection & narration. Starting from the first session at Sun Records in 1953, to the heights on the 1950’s, Hollywood Movie Years, the NBC 68 Comeback Special and finally the concert years 19691977.

Dreams Come True is the latest magic show from versatile stage performer Hugh Shields, also known as Hughdini. Blending dazzling card tricks with feats performed by Houdini himself, the show culminates in a groundbreaking piece called Dreams Come True: Hughdini explains live on stage how one audience member’s dreams can and will become true.

Every aspect of the show is created to be as close to an Elvis concert as possible. Vocally, musically, and most importantly the feel and energy of an Elvis Presley show is authentically created.
