A
Dutch proverb says that although the wind cannot be stopped, one must know how to build windmills. And in Puerto Rico, we have had to learn to build mills to take advantage of the winds that have hit us in the past several years. That conviction is what inspired the Book of Lists that we have put in your hands this year.
Over the past 32 years, this compendium has been expanded to provide more and more verified, timely and useful information regarding the Puerto Rican economy and the growth of its companies. This is an unusual year. Compiling information for this publication has been a challenge. However, our readers will find that our team did an extraordinary job to include the most recent and available statistical data for most sectors, despite delays in government statistics reporting as a result of personnel reductions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. You will notice that the 2020 Book of Lists is published in a new, easy-touse format but with the same relevant and precise information that our readers expect. In this edition we provide a comprehensive roadmap with essential information that an entrepreneur needs to know to open a business on the island. In this task we recognize the team work led by Antonio Duarte-Pino, a former deputy secretary of the Puerto Rico Economic Development and Commerce Department, who explains in a detailed and precise manner the process necessary to become an entrepreneur in Puerto Rico. We also want to thank the contributions of the former director of the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Co., Antonio Medina, and renowned economist Heidi Calero. This new edition also presents a snapshot of each economic sector that contextualizes the statistical and economic reality in which the companies that appear on the lists operate. I appreciate the work of the Caribbean Business and Book of Lists teams, led by Special Projects Manager Eylin Fortín Suárez, investigative journalist José Alvarado Vega and researcher Cristina Hernández; as well as the design work of senior and lead graphic artists Dennis J.
