Myanmar protesters march despite ban on gatherings

Photo: Google

Demonstrators have taken to the streets in Myanmar in defiance of new rules imposed by the military junta that make their protests illegal. Protesters against the Myanmar military coup rallied on Tuesday in the country’s two biggest cities, defying a ban on gatherings of more than five people. Demonstrators want power restored to the deposed civilian government and freedom for the nation’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her allies. Coup leaders issued decrees on Monday night that banned gatherings of more

than five people in parts of Yangon and Mandalay. Thousands of people have been demonstrating in both places since Saturday. According to the Reuters news agency, security forces arrested at least 27 people in the latest protests. The legislation bans gatherings of more than five people and imposes an 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew. Yangon is Myanmar’s largest city, with Mandalay second. It is not immediately clear if decrees have been imposed for other areas. Photos circulating online showed police in the capital, Nay-

pyidaw, used water cannon against protesters. People in the crowd chanted “End the military dictatorship” as the water cannon was fired. Protesters want power restored to the deposed elected government and freedom for Suu Kyi. The military detained her and other members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) when it blocked a new session of parliament from convening on February Junta chief General Min Aung Hlaing made a televised speech on Monday evening in an effort to justify the coup.

In his address, he insisted the power grab was justified because of “voter fraud”. Government employees, doctors and teachers are among those have joined a call for civil disobedience and strikes. The 75-year-old Suu Kyi has been held incommunicado since the coup and is being held in police detention until February 15. She faces charges of illegally importing six walkie-talkies. While the NLD won the November national elections by a landslide, the military never accepted the legitimacy of the vote.

Germany expels Russian diplomat in tit-for-tat move

Germany has declared a Russian diplomat “persona non grata” in response to Moscow’s expulsion of EU diplomats last week. Poland and Sweden have made similar announcements. Germany, Poland and Sweden on Monday expelled Russian diplomats in their countries in response to a similar move by Moscow last week. Germany declared a member of Russian embassy in Berlin a “persona non grata.” “The Federal Foreign Office today declared ‘persona non grata’ an employee of the Russian embassy in Berlin,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “Russia expelled several EU diplomats, including one at the German embassy. This decision was not justified in any way.” “The German diplomat was merely carrying out his task of reporting on developments on the spot

in a legal fashion,” the ministry added.Sweden, Poland expel Russians Sweden informed Russia that a Russian embassy staff member would be asked to leave Sweden. “This is a clear response to the unacceptable decision to expel a Swedish diplomat who was only performing his duties,” Foreign Minister Ann Linde tweeted. Moscow calls expulsions ‘unfounded’ Moscow hit back at the expulsions, calling the decision “unfounded.” “Today’s decisions by Poland, Germany and Sweden are unfounded, unfriendly and are a continuation of the very series of actions that the West is taking with regard to our country and which we qualify as interference in our internal affairs,” Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on state channel Rossya 1. Russia said that the

diplomats that it expelled had participated in a demonstration in support of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. Berlin, Stockholm and Warsaw reject the allegations, saying their representatives were at the protests as observers, not participants. Reports on Russian state TV presented the expelled diplomats as criminals, broadcasting surveillance footage of the protests with the diplomats’ faces encircled, together with their full names and functions. “The Russian side has made it clear that it does not intend to tolerate such a thing,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Interfax agency. EU considers Moscow sanctions. Ties between Russia and the EU have taken a dive in recent weeks, over Navalny’s arrest andjailing, whichhas sparked nationwide

opposition protests. EU Commission chief Josep Borrell is expected to meet with foreign ministers from the 27 EU states on February 22 to mull new sanctions against Moscow. The move would require a unanimous vote among EU members. Russia’s decision on Friday also came as Borrell was meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Borrell said he learned about the expulsions on social media. “The messages sent by Russian authorities during this visit confirmed that Europe and Russia are drifting apart,” Borrell wrote in a blog on his return to Brussels. “It seems that Russia is progressively disconnecting itself from Europe and looking at democratic values as an existential threat.”

Afro-Marxism

There’s a vicious brotherhood between the national privileged class and the metropolitan ruling class, the initial is a junior oppressor while the latter is a senior overlord; they work hand in hand, they have the same goal and objective, to kill, steal and destroy. The privileged class have dug its own grave by creating inequality which gives birth of to the inevitable existence of the proletarians and the working class who by a rising tide of revolt will in the last resort violently overthrow the privileged ruling class and replace it with

a Marxist egalitarian political machine. Africa and African people are suffering from extreme capitalism, foreign capitalist-imperialist domination and National bourgeoisie oppression. There’s a vicious brotherhood between the national privileged class and the metro-

politan ruling class, the initial is a junior oppressor while the latter is a senior overlord; they work hand in hand, they have the same goal and objective, to kill, steal and destroy. Feudalism is a refined form of slavery just as capitalism is a refined form of the feudal politi-

cal epoch, the capitalist class is refined form of slavery that has subjected black people to reactionary national and metropolitan capitalist oppression and exploitation by the creation of laws and bourgeois policies that only applies to the peasants and lowly masses.

Africa Rennaisance

Marxism Why do we need Afro Marxism?

After clearly pointing out the local and internal oppression Black people face, it's now evident that we can never fight capitalism with capitalism, we can only fight capitalism with Marxism. Black people aren’t individualistic people, Black people are a communal people, we practised a political and economic system of egalitarianism where the means of production wasn’t owned and controlled by a few ruling class, the means of production was controlled by the community and the wealth emanating from it was equally owned by the community and the people, the white with his urge to exploit African resources and labour came with the vicious ideology of capitalism-individualism,

he usurped the communal land and resources from the indigenous African people and set up industries, the black man who couldn’t make ends meet after the means of survival was taken away from him was forced to sell his labor to the vicious racist white man, who in return turned his labor into capital and creating social stratification that never existed in Africa, he created the bourgeois class, the petty-bourgeois class and the peasantry, he divided African people into classes and brought about class antagonism, he destroyed the African communal system and replaced it with a capitalist contraption. The indigenous African bourgeoisie, petty-bourgeois and intellectual class naturally went along with

the white man and became the political and economic enemy of their people, after a rising tide of the African peasants that led to the destruction of the colonial regime, the African bourgeois and petty-bourgeois still maintain a close relationship with his colonial colleague and this is what hitherto have subjected African people today to dual exploitation, up till today African people still do not control their resources because the bourgeoisie and petty bourgeoisie class who are a remnant of the colonial social stratification keep selling the people out and keeps impeding the liberation struggle of African people, a case study is Congo, the Congolese resource’s being looted daily by foreign powers who

connive with African National bourgeoisie to kill, subjugate and exploit the African masses. How do we solve this problem? Africa needs a mass movement based on the political philosophy of Afro Marxism, that seeks to completely, seamlessly, unconditionally and absolutely destroy the social stratification and with force destroy the National bourgeoisie and its accomplices in the metropolis whose exploitation of African resources is based on the vicious and unequal political philosophy of capitalism. African workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains, you have a world to win.

OLUWAROTIMI DESIRE

Stop the abuse

Day in day out, the media is always flooded with a series of bad news that has to do with abuse. These incidents have done nothing but damage to us. It has made me question the love we claim to have for ourselves. Where is the love? Parents are abusing their children likewise siblings and most surprisingly, couples who already

vowed to love themselves till the end of time abuse each other. If all of these keep happening, then the love we claim to share is ingenuine and untrue. Why don't we try exhibiting undiluted love to everyone around and let's see if it wouldn't make our lives better health-wise? Abuse can be physical, emotional or sexual. It might surface

from neglect. Sadly, a lot of us abuse others without even knowing that we do. Abusing others whosoever they are is the same as afflicting them with pains. PHYSICAL ABUSE. Physical abuse is always easily recognizable because after the deed has been done, traces of the evil act are left behind. This form of abuse occurs through slap-

ping, punching, flogging, biting, choking, pinching and any other act that would inflict injuries on another individual. I think the most common form of physical abuse we encounter in our society today is domestic violence. Dear Husband, why should you ever lay your hands on your woman? What could she have done that seems so unforgiv-

Health & Wellness able? Probably, the problem even lies with you as the husband, who knows? Do you not know that by physically abusing a person, you already went as far as shattering the individual's emotional state and this could lead to a lot of problems as suicide contemplation, high blood pressure as a result of unending cries and overthinking of issues. Dear Parents, you beat your children at every slight error they make and dishearteningly, the beatings of yesterday does not in any way guarantee that they would not make any more error in future. So why not stop the beatings and try some more effective method of correcting your children maybe by sitting then down and doing a heart to heart talk

with them. From my wealth of experience, the latter works better than the other because the child feels honoured that he or she is being treated as human and not like an animal. SEXUAL ABUSE. One of the most important things to learn as humans are to be able to control our sexual urge. No matter who a person is to you, you cannot have sex with the individual without prior consent. Do we need to lift banners before it is understood that this is very wrong? It baffles me to wake up from my sleep and the first thing I see on the headlines is how a 3-year old got defiled by a 60-year old. And I question myself, what is so attractive in a 3-year old? Sexual abuse creates a bunch of problems

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 09 2021 | PG 22

that would eventually need solutions. After effects may be emotional, psychological or even physical. Victims may suffer depression and flashbacks that would result in Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). All of these might as well make the victim begin to have suicidal thoughts. EMOTIONAL ABUSE. Emotional abuse involves criticizing, embarrassing, blaming and insulting a person in such a way that the state of mind gets affected. Issues like this occur a lot between parents and their children. Haven't you ever seen parents ask their children questions like why are you this way? Why can't you be more like? When will you ever change? All of these kinds of

questions have effects on people and not necessarily kids alone. These questions find a way of creeping into the mind making the victims think about it over and over again thereby destabilizing them. The result might be so shocking and unbearable. You've got to be mindful of the way you talk to others no matter who they are. Aside from suffering a health condition, the death rate as a result of abuse is on the high and something needs to be done about it. We need to learn to co-exist in love and watch each other's back like never before. It is only when this is done that you can see that genuine smile on the faces of everyone around.

One of the most important things to learn as humans are to be able to control our sexual urge.

Plank vs. Crunch: which is the best exercise for abs and core ? CASMIRE OKEDINACHI

Planking isn’t a dynamic exercise, per se. It works on your core stability by strengthening your core without moving to a spinal flexion or extension and that’s its entire purpose. However, planking isn’t just supporting yourself on your elbows and knees as long as possible. Planking creates tension in your core, legs and upper body and if you want to keep the tension on them you have to flex and squeeze your muscles as hard as you can while doing it. When your core muscles are being put under pressure, you should feel your knees almost pulling towards your toes during the exercise. Planking helps

strengthen your spine, which in turn will help you keep a neutral spine during your daily routine. When you do planks on a regular basis, it will bring positive effects on a number of other compound exercises such as deadlifts, benching and squats. As opposed to that, the floor crunch and its many variations serve to get you to go into spinal extension and flexion as much as possible which will contract your abs, which in turn will break down some muscle tissue to be rebuilt later. In order for muscle tissue to break down, you have to have extension and flexion of the targeted muscle, so if you want to make a hypertroph-

ic response in your abs, do some floor crunches. SO , SHOULD YOU DO PLANKS or FLOOR CRUNCHES TO BUILD UP YOUR ABS ? The answer is multifaceted. If you want your body to become more stable, do planks. If you want to have sturdy, blocky abs, do floor crunches and their variations. Of course, you can do both. Some people do crunches first in order to activate their rectus abdominis and break them down a bit, and then finish with some planks. This is done because you can exhaust your abs before doing planks, so when you actually do them they will be harder and more in-

tensified. IN CONCLUSION Planks are really easy to do and you can do them for anywhere up to five minutes, if you’re rested. However, if you do floor crunches before working on your plank, those five minutes will be way more intense and you might not even last that long! So, all in all, the best thing to do about these two exercises is to combine them – floor crunches first followed by planks and your abs will look amazing. Congolese star making waves in Germany Vincent Mutuma

Batila is a Congolese guitarist and singer based in Berlin, German. His music is described as "soulphisticated, colourful, vibrant and elevating". His music bears a Congolese scent, a sparkle of R&B and soft jazzy vibes. Batila's mellow voice guides the audience through unique live experiences, be it with a full band on a big stage or in an intimate acoustic setting. He is known for his energetic and memorable performances. At age 10, Batila started writing po-

ems and developed a love for music as his father would bring back vinyl from his travels.  “I was always the first to unwrap the vinyl and listen to the songs- the latest releases of Congolese Urban Music. I fell in love with the Congolese songwriting style where songs are penned from the perspective of the woman. Often, socio-political themes are cleverly wrapped up in love stories,” said Batila, whose favourite bands include the Papa Wemba’s Viva la Musica, T.P.O. k Jazz by

Franco Luambo Makiadi among others.  Songwriting for Papa Wemba In the 90s, Batila was part of a hip-hop group called Soylent Green but he quit after three years to join college. During his college years, he got to write for the legendary Papa Wemba.  “Writing for Papa Wemba was surreal because he’s one of Congolese music’s all-time greats. My experiences influenced my style, Bantu Soul. It’s a fusion of Congolese music, reggae and soft jazzy vibes inspired

by people of African descent.” LP Batila has an upcoming LP titled  Tatamana, which means ‘don't give up’ or ‘hold onto what you love’ in Kikongo.  “The album is my journey to African spirituality, self-love and black love. The first single in the project is dubbed  Naboyi,  meaning ‘I don’t want’. The song is about Simon Kimbangu, a Congolese religious leader who was killed by the Belgians for trying to enlighten the Congolese people,” revealed Batila.

Man City still keen on Barcelona legend His contract in Catalonia expires at the end of June, and Messi is finally set to depart Barcelona shortly after his 34th birthday unless the LaLiga giants can somehow convince him to sign a new deal. While every club in the world would be keen on bringing in Messi, he has a huge contract and is likely only a realistic signing for a handful of the biggest teams. Paris Saint-Germain Source: www.talksports.com

are known admirers of Messi, while Man City were planning to sign him last summer before the Argentina forward committed himself to Barca for a further year. And it appears these two teams will again go head-to-head for Messi once this season ends, with PSG publicly flirting with the legendary attacker. City, meanwhile, have remained relatively quiet on the

subject – but this is all part of their plan to sign Messi, ESPN report. It is claimed City are still monitoring the situation at Camp Nou, but will wait until March or April before formalising their interest by ‘sounding out the situation’. This approach by the Etihad club, which is very different from PSG’s public admissions of interest, appears to be the wiser transfer plan.

“PSG are making a mistake with the strategy they’re using,” a Barca source told ESPN. “Leo doesn’t like all that noise in the media and even less the type of comments [which have been made].” Should Messi head to Man City this summer, he will reunite with his former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.

Aston Martin reveal big 2021 target in first season back in F1 against 'formidable' rivals

Aston Martin boss Otmar Szafnauer says the newly-rebranded team are targeting a coveted third in the championship this season but are wary of their "formidable" rivals - as well as 2021's "significant" car changes. After morphing from Racing Point into Aston Martin - marking the famous British car brand's return to the F1 grid for the first time in 61 years - the team have lofty ambitions, particularly after signing four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel to partner Lance Stroll. Szafnauer has previously revealed intent to become a "top team", but in their first season as Aston Martin the SilverSource: www.skynews.com

stone outfit are aiming for an achievement they narrowly missed out in 2020 third place and F1's top 'midfield' runner. "It will be the target for us," Szafnauer told Sky Sports' Craig Slater in an exclusive interview. "But I don't think it will be easy we've got some formidable competitors there." Aston Martin's team principal named two major threats in particular; historically F1's most successful teams. One which is rebuilding after a well below-par season, and another that pipped Racing Point to third at 2020's last race. "Ferrari, for sure, will work hard over the winter to do better

than they did last year," added Szafnauer. "McLaren get a new [Mercedes] power train, the same one that we have and I'm sure they did that for reasons of competitiveness. "And there's some driver movements as well, so we'll see how all that pans out. So there are some differences." Szafnauer also saidthe 2021 changes to the car - which aren't as drastic as previous seasons but are still leading to major re-designs - could make a big difference to the pecking order. "They took out big chunks of the floor for us to lose downforce, and depending on how the teams claw that downforce back, that'll have a big im-

pact." How similar will the Aston Martin car be to Racing Point's? Racing Point made headlines last season, and were even penalised, for designing their 2020 car and more specifically the brake ducts - too similarly to the 2019 Mercedes, F1's world champions and their engine-suppliers. Szafnauer said of Aston Martin's 2021 car: "From a philosophy standpoint, running a low-rake car, that stays the same. "[But there are] significant aerodynamic changes - and because of that we had to redevelop the whole thing."
