Dr.Niranjana K.P. Assistant Professor Farook Training College
TEST -MEANING Most commonly used tools of assessment. A test presents a set of stimuli to elicit responses in order to measure a particular variable. It is a means to gather responses which would provide evidence about the extend of acquisition of a particular attribute such as knowledge, skill, intelligence, aptitude etc., of an individual/ a group. Cronbach (1964) : “A test is a systematic procedure for comparing the behaviour of two or more persons at a particular time; or one or more persons at a different time.”
TYPES OF TESTS
On the basis of Purpose
On the basis of Standardization procedure
Group test and Individual test Oral test and Written test Speed test and Power test
On the basis of response
Criterion referenced test and Norm referenced test
On the basis of way of administration
Teacher-made test and Standardized test
On the basis of interpreting test results
Achievement test and Diagnostic test
Paper –pencil test and Performance test
On the basis of items
Verbal test and Non-verbal test Objective test and Descriptive test
ACHIEVEMENT TEST
Test designed to assess the achievement of students in any subject with regard to a set of pre-determined objectives To assess the progress of the students C.V.Good :“ An achievement test is a test designed to measure knowledge, skills, understandings in a given field taught in school‟
DIAGNOSTIC TEST Test designed to identify and investigate the difficulties, disabilities, and gaps of pupils in specific curriculum areas with a view to helping them to overcome those difficulties through remedial instruction Used to pinpoint the exact area of weakness
DIFFERENCE
Achievement Test Measure how much a student has achieved Tests strength of a students Time of test is important Give sue weightge to every topic in content area Marks are assigned for grading and placement
Diagnostic Test Measure how much a student has not been able to achieve and why Tests weakness of a student Time of test is not important Includes only difficult areas Marks are not assigned
TEACHER-MADE TEST Informal tests conducted by teachers Purpose is to assess the learning achievement of the students with respect to instructional objectives Provides feedback to teachers about teachinglearning process Allows students to see their progress
STANDARDIZED TESTS Tests which are validated over a large sample Given to large sample of students under uniform conditions and scored according to uniform procedure Validity and reliability are statistically calculated
DIFFERENCE
Teacher-made test Same person as instructor, test writer and evaluator No uniform procedure for administration Reliability and validity not ensured Measures learning outcomes of small sample (class/school) Subjectivity in scoring (No uniform procedure)
Standardized test Prepared by a team of experts Standard uniform procedures for administration Highly reliable and valid Measures learning outcomes of large sample of students Objectivity in scoring (uniform procedure for scoring)
CRITERION REFERENCED TEST Describe the performance of students in terms of certain criteria or standard Objective is to achieve the criterion by the students Compares student‟s performance to a standard or criteria Indicates mastery of a skill
NORM REFERENCED TEST Used for comparing achievement of an examinee to that of large representative group of examinees at the same grade level The representative group is known as „norm group‟ Indicates how pupil‟s performance compares to that of other pupils
DIFFERENCE Criterion referenced Performance of student assessed with respect to criteria Fixed criteria
Norm referenced Assessed on the basis of other students performance Criteria changes with outcomes Results can be derived Take time to derive results quickly student Compares student Compares performance with performance with other students criteria
