West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club
West Seattle Totems History: The West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club (WSSC) was founded in 1934. Shortly after the inception, WSSC founding member Roger Dahl started the junior program. He recognized the importance of youth firearm safety and marksmanship training. In 1961, the City of Seattle rebuilt the West Seattle Stadium in preparation for the upcoming World's Fair. As part of the preparation for the fair, the city built an indoor range for WSSC in exchange for the original range site. The new range was named after Roger Dahl. With this new facility, the WSSC began hosting rifle and pistols matches and the junior program evolved under coaches Fred Burr and Stan Mar. The junior program was renamed the West Seattle Totems to better reflect the ram it was becoming under the guidance of Stan Mar. Facility: The range supports a number of configurations which allow for 3-Position Air Rifle and Smallbore Rifle. The range also features a single target retrieval system for Offhand Air Rifle. These range features add versatility and allow for tailored practice for the needs of each individual athlete. The facility features a large classroom which is used for guest speakers as well as team meetings. The classroom has a multimedia system and can be configured for SCATT training when needed. Health is a concern for indoor ranges. The WSSC has a 3 stage HEPA filtration and heating system to ensure the safety of our athletes and club members.
Philosophy: We believe in a process based approach. A perfect process will result in a great performance. The Totems believe in setting goals that are appropriate for each individual athlete based upon their experience and skill. Goals are not based upon how they finish at a match. Coaches: The Totem coaches are dedicated to the development of each athlete to maximize their potential. The coaches recognize that to develop an athlete in the shooting sports, it takes not only training in the shooting discipline, but physical and mental conditioning. This is reinforced with informal presentations in the classroom as well as the range. New shooting athletes are encouraged to compete to get valuable match experience. We want our athletes to enjoy what they are doing, but also understand that it takes a lot of work and dedication to become an elite shooter. The Totem coaches also have experience with Paralympic Rifle. Athletes: The Totems believe in a team structure. Team captains are selected each year to provide leadership and mentor the younger athletes. They work with the coaching staff to develop presentations for the team that support good shooting habits and highlight the physical and mental aspects of the sport. The team logo replicates a traditional northwest totem and is used to distinguish team levels. At the top are the Thunderbirds, followed by the Chiefs, then the Ravens. The athlete earns a spot on the team based upon previous match results and intra-club competition. The Totems also recognize the importance of community. Non shooting events are often organized to develop relationships between the athletes and their families. They recently volunteered to clean, reprint and reorganize the range facility.
