Water supply project on track MARIANA BALT
C
onstruction on Phase B of a new pipeline that the will transfer the water from the eastern boreholes to the central reservoir group for distribution to consumers, has begun last week. It is part of the emergency water supply project for Windhoek, but part of the existing infrastructure is also old and seen as a high risk in times when dependency on the boreholes will be high. This new pipeline will eliminate the need for pumping and allow the CoW to gravitate all water from these boreholes directly into the reservoirs for distribution. Windhoek Express reported on the project last year when the irst phase commenced. It forms part of the initiative started in 2015 to accelerate the implementation of the Windhoek Management Aquifer Recharge Scheme (WMARS). With WMARS the municipality intends increasing the internal long-term water supply capacity by injecting water into an aquifer at times of high rainfall, which can be extracted during times of drought. The aquifer allows for long-term safekeeping with limited losses, approximately 5%, compared to conventional dams which loses up to 50%. Residents should keep in mind that although the city and surrounds had some good rains during the last month, the overall water situation remains a grave concern.
In a second phase of the emergency water supply project for the city, a pipeline that will transfer water from the eastern boreholes to the central reservoir group, is currently being laid. PHOTOS MARIANA BALT
It was a season of break-ins BARRY DE KLERK
A high number of burglary cases were reported to the Windhoek city police over the festive season. Katutura and Khomasdal accounted for 35 cases. According to a spokesperson of the city police fridges, stoves, laptops, cell phones, clothes, money and televisions were among items most frequently stolen. The city police reported that burglars entered buildings by breaking windows or cutting through roofs. Motor vehicle break-ins were also high during the festive season, with 38 cases reported during December. On 6 January a man was arrested after he allegedly stole a car radio, a USB lash drive and N$800 out of a taxi at the Soweto Market. On 11 January a vehicle was broken into at a service station in Mandume Ndemufayo Street. The suspect stole US$1 000 and 600 Chinese Yuan. Namibia Portrait and Technology, situated

on the corner of Garten Street and Independence Avenue, was broken into on 10 January. The burglars gained access to the building through the roof and stole cameras worth N$35 000 as well as N$2 500 in cash. On Tuesday 10 January three male suspects were arrested after they allegedly stole MTC vouchers to the value of N$8 800 from Goreangab Woermann & Brock. The vouchers were not recovered but all three suspects were detained at the Wanaheda police station. Two males were arrested at Monte Cresto Farm in Brakwater after they were found in possession of game meat on 7 January. The suspects were detained at the Katutura police station. The police urge the public to report suspicious behaviour and not to take matters into their own hands, as this can be dangerous. Report crime at the nearest police station or call the city police’s toll free number 061 30 2302 or send an SMS to 4444.
Street kids still harassing motorists BARRY DE KLERK
Residents of Eros and Klein Windhoek still report a high number of street kids on street corners, adding to the city police’s concern about the growing number of street kids and homeless people in the city loitering at intersections. According to a spokesman the street kids are allegedly harassing motorists and begging at various traic stops. The city police urge the community to refrain from giving money to these kids, as this encourages them to continue begging. They are endangering themselves as well as motorists. The city police in addition reports that it is their civic duty to remove and/or detain any element or person that infringes on the safety of the community. They daily patrol locations where street kids are and pick them up as a crime prevention measure. There is, however, no permanent solution as yet; therefore the city police are engaging with various stakeholders to map out a more permanent solution. The public is urged to report the whereabouts of street kids and other homeless people to police stations or to call the city police.

W
hile most people dream of a life of luxury and comfort, there are some who prefer to head of into the unknown, challenging themselves to feats of endurance; whether in the name of adventure, survival, science, education or fame. While a lot of thought and study has gone into their feats and what drives them, little publicised is the work behind the scenes to make these expeditions possible, especially in one of the most challenging environments known to men, the Namib Desert. It ofers perfect conditions to “get lost”. For successful endeavours, hours are spent ensuring that the right equipment is available, visas are applied for and collected, accom-
modation and transport are available, permits to access and ilm in restricted areas or certain parks are in order, medical assistance in case of emergencies and, in the case of a crew following a survivalist such as television personality Ed Staford around, a comfortable base camp on standby. Says Elnette Pearson, chief operating oicer of Magic Touch Films, a local company facilitating large ilm production units in the country: “Various and diverse kinds of expeditions are undertaken, each with a speciic set of logistical requirements, leading to challenges you would never dream of”. She refers to the diference in requirements of an expedition like that of Mike Horn, who recently led a team
of writers through the harshest parts of the country in four-wheel drive vehicles, compared to that of British female adventurer Ness Knight, who completed a solo cycle tour of the Namib Desert, or survivalists like Ed Staford, who along with a support crew, tends to stay mainly in one area. Magic Touch Films is a subsidiary company of Imwe Namibia Holdings and the sister company to Namib Film, the largest and longest-running production company in Namibia, founded by international ilm industry veteran Guy Nockels. The company specialises in documentaries and reality TV projects, as well as facilitating adventure and survival expeditions throughout Namibia. Apart from the team’s facilitation
Rediscover rock art An exhibition featuring photographs of emblematic Namibian rock art opened at the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre on Monday and can be viewed until 16 February. It is curated by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. The so-called White Lady in a cave in the Brandberg/Daureb in western Namibia ranks among the most emblematic igures in southern African rock art. The expeditions of the French archaeologist Abbé Henri Breuil and his collaborator Mary Boyle between 1947 and 1950 established her fame. The archives of the expedition photographers Anneliese and Ernst Rudolf Scherz ofer unexpected glimpses into a time and period when the White Lady and many other rock images were discovered by scientists and made visible by means of the camera. The photographs on display were taken at sites in the Brandberg/Daureb, in the Erongo mountains and at Spitzkoppe. They depict the everyday challenges during research, show techniques of documentation, suggest controversy relating to rock art interpretation and confront viewers with the colonial context of expeditions, research and photography. The black-and-white photographs of Anneliese Scherz reveal surprising re-enactments and visual transformations, including the creation of a “Black Lady”.
experience, Elnette has vast experience working on various productions throughout the world on some of the most extreme locations. “The most important part of our work as facilitator is to ensure the adventurer or athlete can focus on their speciic challenge,” she says, “because in such a challenging environment, the slightest hold-up or issue could derail something the person has sometimes worked years towards achieving.” Guy Nockels, chief executive oicer of Imwe Namibia Holdings, agrees with Elnette and adds: “Magic Touch has become one of the highest rated facilitation companies in the world and thanks to years of experience and local knowledge in working with in-
ternational ilm crews and adventure expeditions, can facilitate expeditions and crews of any size, whether they’re local or international.” For the team it is a challenging yet rewarding experience to work on these adventures. According to them, even though many elements of facilitation are the same, like various permit requirements, whether ilming with a personal camera or a movie camera, whether planning for a base camp or sourcing equipment for an expedition, each facilitation brings with it its own set of challenges. “Often it is necessary to pull a rabbit out of a hat, but one thing we are proud of is that Magic Touch always manages to keep expeditions, adventures and challenges running smoothly,” Guy says.

Toys for Hope Village children he U.S. Marine Corps and embassy families donated Christmas toys to the orphans and vulnerable children of the Hope Village Orphanage in Windhoek. Each year the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots programme collects new, unwrapped toys during the November and December holiday sea-
son, and distributes them as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community where the campaign is conducted. The orphanage is under the care of Marietjie de Klerk and accommodates 87 children who were abandoned by family members. Marietjie says the children are very excited to receive the toys. She adds that the orphanage has four
houses, run by women who take care of the children. Maria Hansen, a volunteer from Norway who assists at the orphanage, says spending time with the children has given her a new perspective on life. “I’m studying social work back home as I would like to help vulnerable children. Being here has taught me a lot in terms of my career choice,” she concludes.

A thousand ways to die – or live You can truly count your lucky stars that you are alive today. Even if you read this midmorning, you have just survived countless ways you could have died. Just the fact that you survived through the night was a miracle in itself. Did you ever think there was a chance that a venomous snake could have slithered its way into your house and sneaked into your warm bed in the early hours of the morning? How would you feel about a black widow spider visiting you in the night? What if a thief breaks into your home while you are sleeping and holds you at gunpoint? Perhaps it is time to get yourself an alarm system, electric fencing,
as well as a ten metre high wall around your property. I would also recommend getting the toughest looking dog and some karate lessons for yourself, just to be on the safe side. When last did you check your cholesterol and blood pressure? You could be in line for a heart attack, stroke, or aneurysm and never even wake up! While you quickly grab yourself a bite to eat in the morning, remember to chew slowly or you could ind yourself choking to death, unless someone in your household knows CPR. Are you and your other half on best terms? Better be, or they may decide to add some rat poison to your delicious
French toast. Once you have survived all the dangers of the night and all the terrors lurking at home, there is the obstacle of getting into your car and driving to work. You could be the world’s best driver, but you cannot do anything about other drivers on the road, especially taxis. My only recommendation is that you ind out where to get hold of an army tank to use as your new mode of transport. You could also tragically die from carbon monoxide poisoning in your car if its exhaust system is faulty. Better make sure you wear your best set of underwear just in case you have to be rushed to hospital. Once you have made that terrifying journey to work, the dangers keep on appearing around every corner. How well do you know your colleagues? How many times do we hear of somebody completely losing it and turning up with a gun at their workplace or in a public place and shooting everyone? Rather put on your best smile and buy muins for everyone at work just to keep them in a good mood. On the way to your ofice, make sure you climb up those stairs carefully with your high heels, or you may ind yourself falling down the stairs and breaking your neck. Don’t even try to rock in your chair or the same thing could happen. So you have made it through your irst cup of morning cofee, your irst workday and week, halfway through January of 2017 already. And since there are just as many ways of staying alive, use and appreciate that and enjoy a prosperous 2017!

Begin die jaar op regte noot Sopnat en stroopsoet van Windhoek skryf:
A

Dinaelago Nashitope, Chalese Eimbeck and Michelle Bezuidenhoudt, former learners of Jan Möhr High School, visited the school on the occasion to encourage learners so that they can emulate their excellent example. The three are enrolled at the University of Namibia to become medical doctors.
Back-to-School campaign launched
T
he MultiChoice Namibia Back-toSchool campaign was launched at Jan Möhr High School by the minister of education, arts and culture, Ms Katrina Hanse-Himarwa. It afords learners and teachers the opportunity to access educational programmes through the free installation of plasma screens with PVR decoders at schools. The comprehensive DStv education bouquet ofers 10 channels and learners are encouraged to learn through these programmes. Hanse-Himarwa said many learners might be urged by parents and teachers to watch less television and instead focus on academic work. “I do not want to contradict good parental advice, but television has become a highly educational medium where state-of-the-art educational programmes serve as an excellent learner-teacher support,” she said. She further said the investment by MultiChoice Namibia heeded the call of the president that nobody should feel left out from the Namibian house. The minister also implored the school to understand how the equipment work
and to make sure the school management devise a clear strategy to ensure the children beneit from the resource centre at the school. The principal of the school, Clement Kloopers, said it was his inal year of teaching but he would make sure that the school reached the number one spot academically in the region. In order to do that he urged teachers to commit themselves to the learners and the school. “Adjust your teaching methods in order to gain the learners’ attention.” Erwan Orlam, a grade 12 learner of Mariental Senior Secondary School, was chosen by MultiChoice to deliver a message. As a top performer of his school, Orlam said he owed his academic achievements to watching educational programmes. “People ask me how I know the things I do, and my answer is always television. I become more familiar with business terms as I have commercial subjects. I encourage my peers to not watch television passively, but to engage afterwards. While we are exposed to television focused on learning, let us make use of opportunities provided to us,” he said.
Orphanage graced with donations
The Genade Kinderbewaarhuis orphanage in Katutura could enjoy a merry Christmas illed with love and gifts due to the kindness of 25 Standard Bank employees who rallied to hand over food, clothes, toys, books and kitchen utensils to the value of N$10 000 to the institution. Corny Zaaruka and Marvin Katire handed over the donations. “Children are the future of the nation and many of them are not fortunate enough to enjoy a warm meal, or experience the feeling of opening a Christmas gift. It is therefore the responsibility of the more privileged to give to the less privileged and enrich their lives,” Standard Bank’s head of client coverage, Adri Spangenberg, said about their donation. He added that it was their social responsibility to help where they could, and that the act of donating in turn became part of their department’s corporate social responsibility project. Standard Bank’s corporate and investment team has been donating to the orphanage for the past 10 years and always makes sure they donate gifts for the festive season and stationery for when schools re-open. The orphanage was established 28
years ago and is run by Justine Stephanus. It cares for 25 orphans, aged between two and 22 years. “This donation will help a lot, we will be able to feed and dress the children without having to worry about where they will get food or clothes,” an overjoyed Justine said.

Cohan Wiese (6) is baie opgewonde oor sy eerste dag van skool by WAP.
Die sesjarige Conraad Brandt (links), Wynand Olivier (7), Shalishah Bok (7) en Roland Faden (6) het al klaar maatjies gemaak op hulle eerste skooldag by WAP.
Shawna Carew begin haar skoolloopbaan by Laerskool Pionierspark.

St Georgians assemble as one History was made at St George’s Diocesan School last Wednesday when the whole school joined in assembly on the school grounds. It was the first time in the 98-year history of the school that the prep school and college held a joint assembly. The college opened its doors for grade 8 students in 2003 and traditionally the two divisions held separate assemblies on the first day of school. They now started this new tradition to emphasise their unity and that all the learners are St Georgians. In her welcome message executive head Mrs Riëtte Hanekom told stu-
dents that the school’s theme for 2017 relates to every St Georgian’s behaviour: “St Georgians be humble, be hard working, be kind and be a St Georgian at heart,” she told students. Following the assembly, another new tradition started with a guard of honour walk for the grade ones. College students formed a guard of honour from the school grounds to the prep school where the new students participated in the traditional bell-ringing ceremony. After the grade ones rang the school bell, the prep school students formed a guard of honour to the grade 1 classrooms.
Grade 1 student, Zoë Husselman, rings the school bell during the bell-ringing ceremony on her irst day at St George’s.

Rocking and running for fun I n just more than a month this year’s Rock n Run event will take place at the Trustco United Sports Grounds in the city. Following previous success, this third Rock n Run promises to bring even more rocking, running and fun. Participants can take part in a 5 or 10
km fun run, while being entertained along the route by artists and a variety of fun activities. On Saturday 25 February the route will come alive when local talent like Brother’s Remedy and Lize Ehlers will entertain participants along the route while entertainment by inter-
national artists awaits at the main stage. Here young participants and guests can look forward to meeting LOLLOS while the rest of the guests can dance to the beat of music by Mango Groove, Heuwels Fantasties and the latest music sensation, Refentse. Titus says one of their objectives as a committee is to promote darts vigorously, with the main focus on development. “Our intention is to introduce the game to more schools
and develop young talent, since a pilot project has been launched to secure players of both genders and all cultures and ages.” He indicates that they are also sufering from the same diiculties currently experienced by other Namibian sport codes and hopes for a solution. “We call on partners in the corporate world to assist sport in Namibia as it cannot exist without such assistance,” he urges, while appealing to committee members to come up with initiatives to generate money to reach their objectives.
