The entrance to the Same Day Surgery Center at Pequot Health Center in Groton

health news By Jenny Chen

Amidst a pandemic with ever-escalating numbers, Yale New Haven Health recently added ambulatory neurosurgical services to the services available at the Pequot Health Center in Groton, CT. Pequot Health Center is one of many ambulatory care centers introduced in the last decade to offer a faster, more cost-effective alternative for patients after advances in technology made surgeries less complicated to perform and less painful. Patients spend less time in a care setting and more time recovering from the comfort of their homes.  Caryn Turchi, a Connecticut resident, became one of the first neurosurgical patients at Pequot Health Center in December 2020. One day, after working in her garden, she suddenly felt a terrible pain in her right hand. “I could not even open a jar of peanut butter,” she recalls. Caryn saw a physiotherapist, who suggested her symptoms were

severe enough that she should see a surgeon before starting any treatment. The surgeon diagnosed her with spinal cord compression coming from her neck (formally called cervical myelopathy). Her C5 vertebrae was compressed, and she had a herniated disc that was pushing down on her spine. Without surgery, Caryn was told she would develop progressively weaker arms and hands, which eventually would become permanently paralyzed. She was also told if she were to fall jarring her neck, she could become paralyzed or even die. Caryn received a second opinion from Yale assistant professor of clinical neurosurgery Dr. Patrick Doherty, MD, who is also chief of neurosurgery at L+M Hospital and chose him to perform the 90-minute surgery – a cervical discectomy and fusion – which he did at Pequot Health Center, a very convenient option for her.  While her neck was sore for a few weeks because of the surgery, the

numbness and pain in her hands is entirely gone. Caryn feels great and expected to be back to work in February.
