What is the Zero Cost Textbook Initiative? The Zero Cost Textbook Initiative is a targeted approach to make education more accessible to students by supplementing traditional commercial textbooks with OER (Open Educational Resources) or library licenced resources. All selected courses will be required to adopt these new materials. Faculty who participate in the initiative to select the new alternatives will receive $750 in recognition of their work. This initiative was created to address the low usage rates of textbooks, their rising costs, and the precarious access to textbooks due to the global pandemic and shift to online education. These concerns have led to reduced student engagement, poorer marks, and challenges with student retention. By switching to open access materials or resources already licensed to the library, UCW can take steps to address these barriers and increase access. Instructors will also have greater flexibility in textbook selection and will be less dependent on publisher restrictions. This initiative targets some of the key courses that have high enrollment and cover topics well represented in OER/library resources. To learn more about OER materials visit the UCW OER page Interested in participating? Faculty who are interested in getting involved with the initiative should meet the following eligibility requirements: - Be a full-time faculty - Have taught the course at least 3 times in the past - OR be a sessional/part-time instructor working collaboratively with a full-time faculty member What is involved? - Interested faculty can identify a possible OER substitute for their course textbook and submit it as a part of the Open Access Checklist. This checklist is sent to the OER Committee and the Department Chair. - The Department Chairs will select the candidates for the initiative.
