Advertising: Types and Features Advertising is a paid form of communication , a non-personal message t hrough different media platforms t o inf luence t he buying behavior of t he cust omers or client s. We all are living in a world of consumerism, where t he market always has an answer f or t he public’s growing needs/demands. The t erm advert ising belongs t o t he subt le inf luencers t hat primarily f ocus on a message t o buy a product , use a service, or f ollow an idea as suggest ed by t he advert iser.
Surprisingly, t here is evidence t hat t he advert ising has it s t races even in ancient t imes around 4000 BCE as ment ioned in Egypt ian evidence. Chinese and European civilizat ions also have t he records t o prove t he presence of advert ising. From ancient t imes t o t he modern, it has changed it s nat ure. We will now f ocus on t he dif f erent t ypes of advert ising using dif f erent media plat f orms in det ail:
Print Media Advertising
Despit e being one of t he oldest f orm of advert ising, print media is widely used even t oday by t he small and big advert isers f or t heir advert ising needs.Not only because of it s credibilit y, which comes wit h t ime, but also because of it s reach t o t he t arget ed audience and t he f lexibilit y of advert isement f orms are f ew t hings t hat make t he print media a part of most of t he advert isement campaigns. Print media includes different types of Newspaper advertisements , Magazines advert isement s, Periodicals and Trade journals, Brochures, Flyers et c. The choice of a specif ic medium depends upon t he product or service and t he best -suit ed opt ion f or t hat . Print s ads commonly f ollow t wo major f orms of advert isement s you can book t he ads as Classif ied ads and Display advert isement s. Classif ied advert isement cat ers t o small advert isers f or t heir basic advert ising needs, and Display ads are f or broader coverage purposes.
Radio Advertising
Radio advert ising has it s own long journey. Wit h t he gaining popularit y across t he rural and urban set t ings, Radio has become t he choice of many advert isers. Wit h t he emergence of FM Radio, it has increased manif old. There are several FM radio st at ions of f ering t heir services f or advert ising. Radio advert ising is primarily of t wo t ypes: Sponsored Ads: Ads sponsoring some program or part of t he program.
Regular Ads: These ads appear before, after or during the program. Even t hough Radio has a limit ed market share in advert ising, st ill it is a popular and int egral part of any media campaign.
Television Advertising (Cable/Satellite/Advance television)
Television is undoubt edly one of t he most popular among t he t radit ional advert ising media, and an expensive one t oo. Television ads are audio-visual ads wit h more impact and bet t er reach. Television ads have grown signif icant ly in t he year 2019 in India. Television ads or T V commercials are broadly of t wo t ypes Sponsored Ads: When a t elevision program or part of t he program is sponsored by t he advert isers. Normal T V Commercials: Most of t he advert isement s f all in t his cat egory. The advert isement appears during t he breaks while t he programs aired (bef ore /af t er/ during t he program). The charge of t he advert isement s depends upon t he t ime slot of t he broadcast and t he durat ion of t he advert isement . Going by t he cont ent , t elevision ads are present ed in several f ormat s like Demo ads, Celebrit y endorsement , Test imonial advert isement s, Public service advert ising, et c.
Outdoor Advertising
Out door Advert isement is anot her cost -ef f ect ive medium of advert ising. This t ype of advert ising is also called OOH (out of house advert ising). As t he name suggest s, t his t ype is advert isement is meant f or t hose who are out of t heir houses or on t he move. Billboards (St at ic, Digit al and Mobile ), Banners, Point of sale advertising, Wall writings, Building wraps, Bus shelter posters, are some of t he examples of Out door media. These ads can be easy t o recall and hard t o avoid as t hey are so prominent ly placed wit h loud cont ent and eyecat ching visuals. Vehicle advert ising is also an int erest ing out door medium in which some vehicle is used wit h a vinyl wrap covering it s body or a part of t he body. Dif f erent t ypes of vehicles are used according t o t he need and t ype of advert isement s.
Direct Mail
Direct mailing is anot her t ype of advert isement t hat allows you t o communicat e at a one-t o-one level wit h t he consumer. Direct mail is a physical correspondence sent by t he advert isers t o t he prospect s wit h some inf ormat ion, and benef it s t hat promot e CTA (call t o act ion). CTA leads t o some kind of benef it f or t he advert isers. Though it seems t hat t his t ype of advert ising is a t hing of t he past but it is just a misconcept ion. Digital Media Advertising
Advert ising t hrough digit al media is t he lat est and most promising f orm of advert ising t hat is gaining popularit y wit h t he growt h in t he number of people using digit al mediums. Digit al Advert ising is a broader t erm used f or advert isement t hrough dif f erent online channels: Social Media Advert ising: As t he name suggest s, Social media advert ising uses social media plat f orms f or Regular Ads: T hese ads appear bef ore, af t er or during t he program.. E-Mail
E-mail is also a way t o connect wit h your t arget audience. It is quit e similar t o Direct mail advert ising but t his one is using online mediums f or sending mails inst ead of physical mails.
Mobile Advertising:
Wit h t he rapid growt h of mobile users, t he mobile is also sharing some of t he advert ising space f or t he past f ew years. Mobile advert ising is relat ively new. Mobile ads are delivered in t he f orm of display ads t hrough SMS, MMS or using mobile applicat ions or games.
