TIMOTHY, my son, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at lconion, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

The Lord said this parable, "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Pastoral Message from Fr. Demetre Dear St. Katherine Family, This Sunday we begin what is known in our church as the Triodion period. During this three week pre-Lenten period the church prepares us for repentance. She urges us to prepare ourselves through gradual diet modifications and instructing us with themes of humility, judgment, repentance and forgiveness. The Publican and the Pharisee Gospel reading is this Sunday, kicking off the Triodion period. The reading is concise and the message pure and eye-opening. Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, who is supposed to be the holy man, is in fact superficial. He stands in the temple thanking God for having made him so great. He compares himself to others, and in his heart believes that he is better, smarter, superior to those around him. This person believes “he” is the cause of successarrogance. God does not appreciate this attitude, and he sees right through the superficiality of his work. God sees that this man does holy things, good works, but he does them so that people will praise him. This man wants to be the center of attention, and he wants credit for everything. What the Pharisee is after is feeding his ego, he doesn’t ever verbalize it, but that is what’s in his heart. Humility is nowhere to be found in his heart. Now on the other hand we have the second man that went into the temple, the tax collector. This man we would assume to be sinful on account of his profession which was looked down upon by society. Yet, the tax collector was anything but sinful. This man did not brag, think highly of himself, or think that the world evolved around him. He was not motivated by always being right, or on top. The tax collector in his humility, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven. He cried out saying, “God, be merciful to me a sinner.” This man saw himself as we all should- a servant of God. When we approach the chalice for communion, we do so as the servants of God, not to take Holy Communion, but to receive it. The Pharisee was a hypocrite, holy on the outside- wearing his holiness in an external, exhibitionist manner, but sinful on the inside. The Pharisee was what we call today “fake,” pretending to be holy while actually having secret jealousy and hate in his heart. The tax collector, on the other hand was genuine and good. There was no hypocrisy in his heart, no show to put on for those around him. If we look inwards, we might find a great deal to reflect on from both the Pharisee and the tax collector. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ said that, “All who exalt themselves will be humbled, but those that humble themselves will be exalted.” These are God’s words, which means that they are as real and pure as the salt of the earth. We should examine them seriously and let them change the way we perceive ourselves accordingly. Please take time this week to reflect on the theme of humility, and where there is a need in our heart for a transformation on the inside, pray for that to happen. May we begin this Triodion period with our Lord’s blessings and strength, to grow and elevate ourselves as pure and humble servants of God. Yours in Christ, +Fr. Demetre
