INTENT OF STUDY & SCOPE OF WORK Current Formaldehyde Standards & Intent of Study The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) established the regulations governing exposure to toxic vapors in the workplace. These regulations specify the concentration of a vapor to which an employee may be exposed during an eight-hour day. The permissible exposure limit (PEL) for formaldehyde is 0.75 parts per million (ppm) when measured as an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA). When measured for short-term exposure (STEL), the limit is defined as 2 ppm for a 15-minute period. Additionally, OSHA defines the threshold for increased industrial hygiene monitoring and initiation of employee medical surveillance as 0.50 ppm, when calculated as an eight-hour TWA. In the event that any of the permissible exposure limits are exceeded, additional action may be required. The objective of this Formaldehyde Vapor Program is to aid your facility in achieving and maintaining breathing zone levels of formaldehyde that meet current OSHA PEL requirements. Analytical Air Sampling Methods and Equipment Passive dosimeter badges (and alternatively a Z300 Formaldemeter low level sensitivity of 0.1 ppm) are used to determine both the OSHA TWA and the STEL results. Activity is measured during a worst-case-scenario whenever possible. Dosimeter badges have a sensitivity rating of
