In 2010, after years of work on a capital campaign and construction of a new building, and after providing services out of our new home for a year, The Women’s Center took another giant step forward. We changed our mission statement. We did not change our work or the significant impact we strive to achieve for individuals, families and the community as a result of that work. Rather we wanted our mission statement to better capture the essence of what The Women’s Center does every day in all of its varied and important programs. Inspiring, teaching and empowering women and families to overcome violence, crisis and poverty. Whether counseling with a rape victim trying to heal the wounds of sexual assault, helping unemployed women and men get good jobs so that they can begin their journeys out of poverty, teaching low literate adults to read, educating children how to reduce their risk of sexual abuse, or helping a family leave a violent home, The Women’s Center is not only a major provider of services, it is also a gateway to new courage, new skills and a new life for hundreds of women, men, and children every year. Inspiring – Our first job is to believe in people even before they believe in themselves; to help them see a better future and recognize that they have the inner resources to be healthy, happy, productive, and self-sustaining. Teaching – Our second job is to give people the skills they need to improve their lives; not to do “for” them, but to do “with” them so that they can stand on their own, now and in the future. Empowering – Ultimately the people who come to The Women’s Center for help leave with the capacity to confront desperate circumstances and triumph over tragedy. They have changed lives. All her life, Carmel knew she was different. Never fitting in… feeling wonderful one day, then deeply depressed the next. When her husband died of cancer at 44, Carmel was twice suicidal. Finally she was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. But she needed more than medication to manage her life. She needed counseling to teach her to deal with her mood and behavior swings. Carmel found The Women’s Center. “I was desperate when I first walked in. But the counselor was kind and caring and non-judgmental. She taught me how to cope. Now I am in control and not afraid anymore!”

Vickey became a full-time parent again when her three young grandchildren, ages 3, 5, and 7, came to live with her. They were angry, distressed and out of control, and she discovered

So Vickey brought the children to The Women’s Center, and their healing began. “If I hadn’t come here, there would be so much devastation and tragedy. I even thought suicide was an option. The saying on the wall in the lobby (Inspiring the Courage to Hope, Teaching the Skills to Cope) is so true. The Women’s Center teaches people how to thrive in spite of the devastation.

70,500 children and adolescents participated in child abuse and sexual assault prevention programs. As a result, 150 children disclosed their current or past abuse. 2,036 people called the Rape Crisis and Victim Services Hotline. 345 children and significant others and 795 adults and significant others were counseled at local hospital rape exam sites. 492 abused and victimized children and their significant others received counseling.

316 adult victims of sexual assault, battery or other violent crime and their significant others received clinical counseling. 16 children, adults and their significant others were accompanied through criminal justice processes. 7,220 adults received sexual assault prevention training. 949 professionals were trained in sexual assault, primary prevention and victim assistance issues.

Katina – unemployed for several months and suddenly homeless - came to The Women’s Center’s CNC* machine training program. Here she not only learned a marketable skill in a demand occupation, but she found a place to live, learned how to find a job, and got back on her feet. Katina is now a star in her new job, not only operating machinery, but writing programs to produce parts. “I could never have done this without The Women’s Center… they are angels.” * Computer Numeric Control

A former minister for over 40 years, Paul came to Fort Worth with his wife, who was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Needing to find work to help pay the medical bills, Paul knew it would be an uphill battle at his age of 74. Rejected from 40 different jobs, he heard about The Women’s Center’s Jobs NOW! program and signed up. “All the job seekers in that class had their difficulties, doubts, discouragements, and their own tale of how life had tumbled in. But it was not long before the entire class was infected with optimism, enthusiasm and the beginnings of an ‘I-can-do-it’ outlook.” At The Women’s Center, Paul found a great job at a call center, where he has been for several months. “The Women’s Center lifts people up and points them away from despair to hope.”

Jesus has always been a hard worker. He is at work before the sun rises. His wife Graciela is also a hard worker. She helps babysit their ten grandchildren

before and after school. But Jesus and Graciela had a hard time helping their grandchildren with homework. So they came to The Women’s Center’s Adult Literacy program three years ago to improve their reading and English skills. Jesus now reads and writes reports at work, and Graciela reads stories in English to their grandchildren. “We are so grateful to The Women’s Center. Our teachers have been wonderful and opened the door for us to help ourselves and our grandkids.

DEBBEE HELDOORN 2010 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR People call The Women’s Center’s Helpline with every kind of problem and crisis imaginable. Two days a week, every week, they talk to Debbee Heldoorn and are comforted with her compassion and problem solving attitude. Her dedication is unique in that she flies every week from California to Fort Worth to help with her family business and volunteer at The Women’s Center, then flies back to California for the weekend. Even when she had foot surgery, she hobbled in to work at the Helpline desk in her hot pink foot wrap. Nothing dissuades Debbee’s commitment and enthusiasm.
