FOUNDATION REPORT
During the year the Foundation also awarded $1.256 million in Endowment Grants to more than 60 applicants across St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney, St Joseph’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Community Hospital Griffith. Congratulations to all recipients and thank you to our loyal donors who support the growth of the Endowment Fund every year. Every gift to the Foundation makes a difference, not only contributing to the ongoing development of patient care, research, capital development at St Vincent’s Hospitals, but also reinforcing our mission and values.
Everybody matters In honouring all the gifts we received, we also honour and recognise the donors and supporters who make them. In line with this commitment, during the year we undertook a number of initiatives
Every gift counts
are proud of our achievements, we are aware of the need to continually benchmark our performance and seek opportunities for improvement.
The Foundation also introduced new programs to improve our “reporting back” to donors, linking our donors more directly with the programs and clinicians they support. In doing so, we continued to work closely with our Hospital CEOs, their leadership teams and our clinicians to ensure that donor contributions are supporting the areas of greatest priority.
Thank you to the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation Trustees led by Chairman Charles Curran AC for his ongoing guidance and leadership.
Caring for the community has always been at the heart of the mission of the Sisters of Charity, the founders of St Vincent’s Hospitals. As enablers of this mission, the Foundation is committed to ensuring that our supporters know that everybody matters to us.
The Foundation for the Future As we approach the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Foundation by Paul and Elizabeth Curran, we are focussed on ensuring a strong platform for our success into the future.
Since the Foundation was established in 1984, its role has been to support St Vincent’s by raising vital funds so that its Hospitals can foster excellence and innovation in patient care, clinical education and medical research.
The Endowment Fund established in 1984 with an initial donation of $500,000 by the Curran family has grown to $27.9 million at the end of the 2017/18 financial year with the support of our loyal annual donors. The Foundation has set a goal to grow this fund to $35 million by the end of our 35th year to celebrate the vision of Paul and Elizabeth Curran.
Every gift made by our donors in the 2017/18 financial year contributed to achieving tangible improvements and outcomes for St Vincent’s patients and our community. With community support, the Foundation achieved a total fundraising result of $31.5 million for the 17/18 financial year. This was a pleasing result and a testament to the ongoing loyalty and commitment of our donors.
Since 2013, when the Foundation took on the expanded role as the fundraising organisation for St Vincent’s Hospitals in NSW, more than $100 million has been raised for priority projects and programs. We continue to develop the Foundation’s capability to support the long term ambitions of our Hospitals, including the vision for Precision Medicine and the Campus Redevelopment of Darlinghurst.
In this report, we highlight some of the outcomes that donations, corporate sponsorship and community fundraising helped us to achieve. We want to ensure that our supporters know that, to us, every gift counts, and every gift is used wisely to achieve priorities for our Hospitals.
To ensure our future, we are also aware of the need to engage a new generation of supporters. In May 2018 the Foundation launched our “Evolution of the Foundation” program, designed to connect the next generation of our family of donors to the Foundation.
In 2017/18 this included the ongoing redevelopment of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney, ground-breaking patient care and research projects supported by the Heart Lung Innovation Fund, leading Mental Health projects and the construction of a new state-of the-art Haematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit. to ensure that we understand what matters most to our donor family. As well as a survey to encourage feedback, we worked closely with many donors on a one-on-one basis to direct their contributions to areas of need that most interests them.
Thank you
In June 2018 we bid farewell to Sr Sesarina Bau rsc who retired from her role as a Trustee, and we thank Sr Ses for all she did to promote the work of the Foundation. The Foundation welcomed the appointment of Sr Rose Holman rsc who formally commenced as a Trustee in November 2018. We sincerely thank Assoc Professor Anthony Schembri, CEO of St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney, and Tim Daniel, newly appointed CEO of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney, whose support ensures that the work of the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation is closely aligned to the ambitions of our Hospitals. We also thank Robert Cusack, former CEO of St Vincent’s Private, for his contribution as a member of the Foundation Board. The commitment of the Foundation team often goes beyond the call of duty and we thank them sincerely for their efforts in caring for our donors and raising much needed funds. We would also like to thank Jane McCallum who we farewelled from her role as Deputy CEO in February 2017, and welcome Robert Wynn who started as our new Deputy CEO in September 2018. Finally and most importantly we would like to once again thank our donors for their continued involvement and support. As we have said every gift counts and every one of you matters greatly to us. ST VINCENT’S HOSPITALS REPORT “As we look to bring our future plans to fruition to future-proof St Vincent’s over the coming decades, the strength and importance of our relationship with the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation has become all the more evident and for this we are very grateful.” Associate Professor Anthony Schembri, CEO St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney and Tim Daniel, CEO St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney
St Vincent’s Griffith It is now two years since we opened St Vincent’s Private Community Hospital Griffith (SVPCHG) – a 40 bed medical surgical hospital with 20 single rooms for in-patients which includes two special purpose Palliative Care rooms and 20 beds for day procedure patients. It also features 2 operating theatres and a minor procedure room, seven consulting suites, a fully functioning kitchen and administration services. In this time, the Riverina community has fully embraced the new hospital, with hundreds of families already benefitting from their loved-ones receiving their care locally and being spared the long journey to Wagga and Sydney for hospitalisation.
Delivering excellent care to everybody At all our hospitals our surgical activities have been going from strength to strength. At the public hospital, we have become one of the best performing surgical hospitals in the NSW Health system having consistently met all our elective surgical targets. Again we undertook a record amount of heart/lung transplants which was particularly apt given we celebrated both our 1000th heart and 1000th lung transplant milestones during this period.
St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Campus In the last year, we have been very fortunate to commission two important facilities on the St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Campus. Some of you might have already visited the newly completed Sr Frances McGuigan rsc Wing at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney. The 13 storey building features stunning patient facilities including a new ambulatory care service, two new operating theatres, expanded medical and surgical inpatient wards, a new rehabilitation service and additional doctors’ suites. You might also have had the opportunity to visit St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney’s new purpose-built Haematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit on 9 South comprising 20 single positive and negative pressure rooms. The new unit will enable us to continue our pioneering stem cell work which goes back to 1975 when doctors at St Vincent’s performed the country’s first bone marrow transplant.
As you know, the St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney Emergency Department treats a disproportionately high amount of patients with both mental health as well as drug and alcohol related conditions. We were excited to recently commence construction of an innovative Psychiatric Alcohol and Non-Prescription Drug Assessment (PANDA) Unit as part of the $14 million Emergency Department enhancements that will reconfigure the physical space in the Emergency Department to directly address projected growth in Emergency presentations. Once completed next year, the six bed PANDA unit will be co-located with an expanded Psychiatric Emergency Care Clinic (PECC) to improve the assessment and treatment of patients with mental health and drug and alcohol related conditions.

Future of healthcare through research Our clinical research endeavours have been growing rapidly with a significant increase in clinical trials activity since 2013 from 147 clinical trials to 247 clinical trials in 2017. One of our major research objectives is to harness the capabilities of precision medicine on the Darlinghurst Campus, and nearly two years on since St Vincent’s launched Australia’s first Clinical Genomics Unit in collaboration with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research to provide whole genomic sequencing, the Unit has been growing rapidly. Also related to St Vincent’s precision medicine endeavours is the Campus’ leadership role in theranostic prostate therapy trials which has attracted multi-million dollar funding through the NSW Cancer Institute in the past twelve months. All of these projects share a common theme in that they may well have not come about if not for our unshakable partnership with our key academic, research and philanthropic partners. As we look to bring our future plans to fruition to future-proof St Vincent’s over the coming decades, the strength and importance of our relationship with the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation has become all the more evident and for this we are very grateful. Assoc Professor Anthony Schembri Chief Executive Officer St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney
While these two projects are vastly different in their size and clinical endeavours, they share two absolutely common traits. Firstly, they have both been built from an entirely patientfocused perspective – designed to provide the best outcomes as well as the most caring patient experience. Secondly, they both owe their very existence to the extraordinary philanthropic support of the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation and their generous, and indeed, visionary donors. On our Darlinghurst Campus, the philanthropic support of the Foundation is a game-changer; now, and indeed into the future as we go about our Campuswide master planning. The central driving force of this planning is the St Vincent’s Integrated Healthcare Campus Darlinghurst Clinical Services Strategy 2027, launched last year, which represents St Vincent’s future vision for the Campus to meet and adapt to the clinical, scientific, pastoral and financial

challenges of healthcare in the 21st century. This planning process is critical in order for the Darlinghurst Campus to continue to thrive.
Mr Tim Daniel Chief Executive Officer St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney
After extensive consultation with staff and key stakeholders, St Vincent’s has formulated this Clinical Services Strategy which outlines six key strategic commitments. Among those are precision healthcare, new ambulatory models of integrated care, telehealth to reach regional and rural patients and to be a destination for world-class treatment, research and training. Importantly, we will also continue to advocate for and deliver compassionate care to the poor and vulnerable in the spirit of Mary Aikenhead and the Sisters of Charity. Currently the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation is heavily involved in a variety of projects that relate to all six of these strategic commitments as we start to bring our building and infrastructure needs to life. Going Dry in July
Griffith Grows
Taking part in Dry July has become an annual tradition at the St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Campus. This year, a group of committed supporters abstained from alcohol for the month of July to raise $47,905 for cancer services at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.
It was a momentous occasion when St Vincent’s Private Community Hospital Griffith opened in 2016 thanks to more than $5 million in donations from the Griffith community! It meant that patients from the Murrumbidgee region can now access specialist and private healthcare closer to home, rather than travelling to Wagga or Sydney. Nearly two years on, the Hospital is thriving and is also home to the Baiada Murrumbidgee Clinical Teaching and Learning Centre, generously supported by the Baiada Family. The Centre is a purpose built education and student accommodation facility which is fostering clinical expertise in the region.
The funds raised went towards helping cancer patients experiencing hardship or isolation get to their St Vincent’s Hospital appointments through free transport services. Money raised from Dry July also helped purchase new chairs and furniture to provide comfort for patients and their families during treatment.

A Breath of Fresh Air
A Friendly Reception
Supporters at the Foundation’s Inside St Vincent’s series heard about the broad spectrum of health issues relating to our lungs, including pneumonia, sleep apnoea and asthma. With one in four Australians suffering from a lung condition, it was no wonder there was such a strong interest in this topic! A generous ongoing gift from the Vidor family to the Heart Lung Innovation Fund has also enabled the commencement and planning of a new Lung Health website which will provide patients with up to date and expert information relating to lung disease and material to assist them better understand their treatment and patient journey.
We celebrated the support of our Friends of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney at the annual Friends reception, with Patron Mrs Roslyn Packer AC, held at Sandersons Mercedes Benz Rushcutters Bay and generously hosted by Greg and Elizabeth Sanderson with delicious food catered by Serena Sanderson. The 2017 Annual Friends Reception provided an opportunity to update supporters on the progress of the St Vincent’s Private Hospital Redevelopment and launch the new Friends for Life Paver program which gives supporters the opportunity to have a named paver in the Susan Wakil Healing Garden which will open at the completion of Stage 3 of the redevelopment.
All for Trace team reach their fundraising goal! After two years of fundraising The TLR Foundation reached their goal to raise $300,000 to fund a new patient room in the Haematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. Led by the effervescent Neil Pennock, this dedicated group of supporters have shaved their heads, skydived, hosted cocktail parties and run in the City2Surf twice to raise this incredible amount of money. We can’t thank Neil and his supporters enough for their ongoing commitment and support of St Vincent’s Hospital.

ST VINCENT’S PRIVATE HOSPITAL, SYDNEY PROGRESS REPORT
St Vincent’s Private Hospital redevelopment
With a growing and ageing population in our neighbourhood, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney is expanding to meet the needs of our community by building Your Hospital of the Future, with the very generous support of the community.
Enhancing the patient experience One shining example of generosity is the involvement of Alison and Simon Rothery.
Stage 1 of Your Hospital of the Future Significant progress was made during 2017/18 on the construction of Your Hospital of the Future. The construction of Stage 1 of the three stage project, the new Sr Francis McGuigan rsc Wing (formerly known as the East Wing), was completed and commissioning commenced in March 2018. The Sr Francis McGuigan rsc Wing provides an additional 48 beds, 2 new operating theatres, additional doctors’ consulting rooms, together with ambulatory care and rehabilitation facilities. Each of the new floors and areas has been named to honour major naming rights donors to the capital campaign. By August 2018 patients were already using the brand new facilities and rooms in the Sr Francis McGuigan rsc Wing, while doctors started operating in the new surgical suites, including the new Hybrid Operating Theatre. By moving patients across into this new facility, the Private Hospital is able to continue to deliver our internationally renowned high-level care throughout the redevelopment project.
Work began on the important Stage 2 of the project with a total refurbishment of the existing Private Hospital building commencing. Following completion of this stage of the project, 90% of the patient rooms will be single-rooms compared with 71% previously. Stage 2 of the redevelopment program will see the completion of the new Packer Family Floor, Karedis Family Floor and the new Cowin Family Admissions Centre. This will be followed by Phase 3 incorporating the completion of the new entrance, the Susan Wakil Healing Garden and the new Friends of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Operating Theatre. The new Susan Wakil Healing Garden will incorporate the Friends for Life pavers honouring the many donors who subscribed to this program to support the redevelopment through leadership contributions or a commitment of $10,000 over 2 years. Opportunities still exist to become a Friend for Life and be honoured with a named paver. It is expected that the totally redeveloped St Vincent’s Private Hospital will be completed and opened by Spring 2020.
Donor support for the redevelopment has been truly inspirational with more than $43.3 m secured towards the $150 million project by the end of 2017/18 financial year. The Foundation is very grateful to Mrs Roslyn Packer AC for her ongoing leadership as Patron of the Friends of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney and the contribution of the Capital Campaign Board led by Mr John Morschel. At the conclusion of this redevelopment, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney will truly be a Hospital of the Future thanks to the generosity and visionary participation of our donors.
Alison and Simon felt that they could make a game changing contribution to St Vincent’s Private Hospital to greatly enhance the patient experience. Through the family’s generous donations, the Hybrid Operating Theatre System and Table was installed and Australia’s first keyhole surgery was successfully performed on a patient’s heart. Simon explains that “Alison and I were drawn to giving towards the Hybrid Operating Theatre in particular due to the amazing benefits it gives patients, as well as the flexibility of the technology given to the surgeons to provide innovative procedures and care to patients. To be able to see the immediate benefits of our gift with the first keyhole heart surgery completed is extremely rewarding”.

Caring for Minds and Bodies
200th Transoral Robotic Surgery Case
A Royal Reception for our donors
A new gym in St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney officially opened to provide tailored exercise programs for patients across a range of departments in the Hospital. This new facility enables clinicians to develop programs to help to improve patient’s mental health and overall feeling of well-being, tackling weight gain and helping to manage diabetes which can occur as a result of medication. The gym’s metabolic monitoring program is facilitated by UNSW Exercise Physiology experts and helps our patients on the road to recovery. The gym was funded through a 2017/18 St Vincent’s Curran Foundation Endowment grant awarded to Mr Noah Mitchell. It is a great example of the difference that is made on a daily basis through these campuswide annual grants.
Our expert surgeons at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney performed their 200th Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) using the da Vinci Surgical System today. Professor Richard Gallagher, Director of Cancer Services at St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Campus, operated the four robotic arms of this da Vinci robot to remove cancerous cells from a patient’s throat. Special thanks to community fundraisers John Davis OAM and Elisabeth Davis for rallying the community together to raise funds for the purchase of the da Vinci System way back in October 2005. This first foray into precision medicine and the use of robotics 13 years ago helped establish St Vincent’s Private Hospital’s current reputation as a centre of excellence for robotic surgeries.
His Royal Highness The Duke of York, KG joined guests at the Foundation’s 25th annual Spring Reception, to thank them for their generous support and celebrate the important role that philanthropy plays at St Vincent’s. Guests gathered in the Noble Dining Room of the Sydney Cricket Ground, for the Foundation’s annual update on what donations have helped to achieve in the previous financial year. This annual event is a highlight of the Foundation calendar, presenting a wonderful opportunity for our donors to catch up with each other and with St Vincent’s Hospital leaders, doctors and nurses. The Foundation is very grateful to our Presenting Partners GSA Insurance Brokers, and our corporate partners Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust, Levantine Hill and Bensons Property Group for their ongoing support to stage this important donor thank you event.
OCTOBER 2017 12 Raising Funds for Robots Foundation and St Vincent’s Private Hospital supporters Ian and Maggie Joye hosted a very special dinner at their stunning home, Barford House, to help launch the campaign to raise $4 million for a new Da Vinci Single Port robot. Almost $1 million was committed on the evening from major donors including Les Schirato AM, Tony Sukkar AM and the O’Halloran Foundation to support the purchase of Asia-Pacific’s first single port robot to treat patients in need of head and neck, colorectal, cardiothoracic and endoscopic surgeries. Robotics is one of the cornerstones of the St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Campus’ vision for Precision Medicine.

Dr Kathy Wu, Mrs Amanda Pagent and Mr Ian Pagent
IT’S IN OUR GENES Keeping it in the Family The Foundation has always been a “family”, and in recent years we are enjoying the “evolution” of those supporting St Vincent’s to include the children and grandchildren of some of our founding donors. The Pagent family has been supporting St Vincent’s since 1992, and it is a special honour to see this tradition of support continue through their ongoing philanthropy and a new corporate partnership with the Autosports Group.
The St Vincent’s Clinical Genomics Unit is one of the few in the world that provides an integrated genomics service within mainstream healthcare and is being generously supported by the Pagent family. The Clinical Genomics Unit work with specialists in Cardiology, Neurology, Vascular Medicine, Endocrinology and Mental Health.
14 St Vincent’s Curran Foundation Philanthropy Report 2018 A Year in the Life of the Foundation
Ian Pagent shares with us that “It is wonderful to pass on to your children the tradition of giving, and I have been delighted to introduce them to the world of philanthropy. We are very fortunate to be able to contribute, and we feel a great sense of joy when we continue to participate in the wonderful transformation that is occurring at St Vincent’s Hospitals”. In 2017, the Pagent family made a generous commitment to support our Clinical Genomics Unit (CGU) with a particular interest in cardiac risk. Established in 2016, the St Vincent’s CGU is now playing a pivotal role in determining the risks of developing certain diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, as well as diagnostic screening and preventative treatments.

What is the Clinical Genomics Unit? Genomics is a term which many are familiar with, but may not fully comprehend. What exactly is clinical genomics, and how could it affect how you receive healthcare in the future? This relatively new field of medicine explores the matching of genomic data with clinical outcomes and risk. St Vincent’s launched their Clinical Genomics Unit (CGU) in 2016, with a mission to improve patients’ health outcomes through a genetic diagnosis, personalised treatment, risk identification and management of their families potential health needs. Our CGU is one of the few in the world that provides an integrated and public genomics service within mainstream health care. The CGU team work with St Vincent’s specialists across a number of clinical specialities including Cardiology, Neurology, Vascular Medicine, Endocrinology, and Mental Health.
Founded by Endocrinologist, Professor Jerry Greenfield and led by Senior Geneticist Dr Kathy Wu, the CGU team is contributing to ground-breaking knowledge in this rapidly evolving field. Dr Wu explains that “Our patientcentred care model not only provides a one stop-shop for patients, it also represents an important step towards individualised healthcare, which is about delivering the right care package to the right person at the right time, all based on one’s genetic makeup”.
Close to
500 patients were seen in the CGU clinic in 2017/18
The team also provides genetic risk assessment for common and rare diseases, as well as individual responses to medications. Psychosocial support is also offered for individuals and families who have concerns about their genetic diagnosis.

We were thrilled to welcome our wonderful bequest benefactors and long term donors to our annual thanksgiving lunch, held to thank our supporters for their ongoing generosity. Many of these individuals have left gifts to St Vincent’s in their Wills, so that they can help patients well into the future. Bequests have been transforming patient care at St Vincent’s for well over a hundred years and we are truly grateful for the foresight and generosity of these wonderful people.
Our much loved Ambassador of the St Vincent’s Haematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit, Delta Goodrem, visited St Vincent’s to see the development of the new Unit and put a smile on patient’s faces at Christmas time.
Donors to the 2017 Christmas appeal collaboratively raised more than $130,000 towards building Australia’s first Advanced Cardiac Imaging Centre. This $7.5 million new Centre will provide our patients with the fastest, least invasive and most accurate assessment possible of heart and lung conditions. Thank you for your kind generosity and inspirational Christmas spirit.
The wonderful computed tomography (CT) team at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney performed their 10,000th CT scan this week! CT scanning allows clinicians to produce and analyse crosssectional images of patients without performing surgery, by using computerprocessed combinations of many X-ray measurements taken from different angles. Special thanks to visionary donors Mr Geoff and Mrs Rachel O’Conor and News Limited for their significant contributions to purchase the CT machine back in 2009.

NOT MISSING A BEAT The St Vincent’s Heart Lung team continues to lead the way in the development of world leading technology, facilities and procedures to save more lives. As we approach the 50th anniversary of the first heart transplant performed by Dr Harry Windsor, and the 35th anniversary of the heart transplant performed by Dr Victor Chang AC on Fiona Coote AM, the Heart Lung Transplant team continues to achieve remarkable outcomes for patients. In 2017/18 the Heart Lung Transplant team performed 99 heart and lung transplants, including a rare “Domino Transplant”, and 14 transplants that used the revolutionary “heart or lungs in the box” organ care system technology.
“Out of the box” technology saves more lives The “Heart or Lungs in a Box” organ care system technology enables the St Vincent’s transplant team to reanimate donated hearts and lungs that have stopped, known as organ donations after cardiac death (DCD). Once the donor hearts or lungs are retrieved, they are placed in the organ care system, and injected with a special preservation solution and attached to a bypass circuit. The circuit then pumps the solution, which allows the heart or lungs to be resuscitated and even tested before being transplanted into a recipient. The organ care system also extends the length of time the organs will remain viable during transportation allowing more retrievals.
Professor David Muller and Mr Les Schirato AM
Coronary heart disease affects While the cost of the transplant is covered by the State government, the additional cost of $50,000 each time the organ care system is used has been funded through generous donations to the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation’s Heart Lung Innovation Fund. In 2017/18, 14 organ care system transplants were supported with $700,000 in donations. The long term aim is to prove the effectiveness of this technology in saving lives and achieve government funding as part of their overall support of the St Vincent’s Heart and Lung Transplantation Program which is a state-wide service.
Transplantation Transportation The Packer Family Foundation have supported the Heart Lung Transplant program by covering the cost of air transport and special flights to retrieve the organs. In 2017/18 as the number of transplants and organ retrievals soared, so did the support from the Packer family. The Packer family have a long history of supporting St Vincent’s Hospitals going back decades, and so too their involvement with the Heart Lung Transplant program goes back more than 30 years. Their practical and thoughtful philanthropic support of the transportation costs for donated organs has helped to save thousands of lives over the years, for which all of us at St Vincent’s are deeply grateful.

4.2m Australians, taking the life of one Australian
every 12 minutes. LES SCHIRATO AM supports non-surgical solutions Les Schirato AM and his family have been committed supporters to cardiac care and the Heart Lung Innovation Fund for many years. Les’ particular interest has been the pioneering work of Professor David Muller, Head of Interventional Cardiology, in which damaged heart valves are replaced or repaired via minimally invasive catheter techniques rather than surgery. Professor Muller’s expertise has led Australia in the use of Mitraclips, a non-invasive way to repair heart valves and prevent blood flowing in the wrong direction in the heart. More recently, the St Vincent’s team has tested Transcatheter Mitral Valve Implantation (TMVI) techniques to replace faulty mitral valves without the need for heart-lung bypass surgery. This builds on a very successful Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) program, which treats severe aortic stenosis by replacing aortic valves using a catheter. Thanks to the unwavering support of Les and the Schirato family, the recovery times for patients who are eligible for Mitraclips, TMVIs and TAVIs are significantly reduced, as are the costs on the overall hospital system. We are also very grateful to Les and his son Rolando Schirato, for their corporate partnership support through Vittoria and to Vittoria employees for their workplace fundraising to support the Foundation.
Mr John Cunningham SCM Kick-starts Cardiac Imaging Project A leadership gift from Mr John Cunningham SCM kick-started the Foundation’s campaign to raise $3.5 million for a new Advanced Cardiac Imaging Centre. The campaign was launched at a special dinner generously hosted by Charles Edward Curran and Dr Ana Curran at their home. The new Centre, which is a joint initiative of St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, will provide the fastest and least invasive assessment of heart conditions in Australia, while also conducting world-class research to improve cardiac therapies. The Advanced Cardiac Imaging Centre will allow clinicians and researchers to combine the results from the most advanced cardiac imaging with the data from genomic studies to develop precision medicine approaches to heart problems.

FEBRUARY 2018 26 St Vincent’s Saves Detective’s Life Australia Day saw the nearly fatal attack of NSW Detective Sergeant John Breda, who was stabbed multiple times before being rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney where a team of expert trauma surgeons quickly gathered to commence their life-saving work. After six tense hours in the operating theatre during which the 45-year-old had three blood transfusions, Detective Breda was pronounced stable. Today, after a miraculous full recovery, Detective Breda is grateful for to all those involved in saving his life. Planning began for fundraising to support the construction of a new Emergency Trauma Operating Theatre to include a RAPTOR hybrid operating system. In the case of an emergency trauma surgery such as that required by Detective Sergeant Breda, the RAPTOR saves crucial time with integrated resuscitation, imaging and surgical systems.

Hitting Runs for St Vincent’s
A Hearty Farewell to Professor Phil Spratt
This special community event raises funds for St Vincent’s through a friendly but competitive game of cricket between three teams – the Raw Prawns, Macksville Men and the (un)Professional Fielders. The annual event is now in its fourth year, with friends gathering to play together and pay tribute to cricket legend and Macksville local Phillip Hughes who died in a tragic accident while playing cricket in 2014. Many thanks to Tim Hellyar and his friends for their mammoth organisational efforts. Teams played two 20/20 matches each and raised more than $5,000, bringing their total over the four years to more than $20,000 to support St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney’s Intensive Care Social Work who provided much needed support when families and friends are facing the toughest of times.
Our Community Champions,
together with their many supporters, ran, parachuted, walked, shaved heads, played cricket, fished and went to the races to raise funds for patient care across our Hospitals and Facilities
Sr Ann Harbison rsc, Fiona Coote AM and Dr Phillip Spratt celebrated the first anniversary of Fiona’s heart transplant back in 1985
A heartfelt farewell was held on 27 February 2018 for Professor Phil Spratt AM, St Vincent’s Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Transplantation since July 1991. COMMUNITY CONSTRUCTS NEW HBMT UNIT In 2014 the need for a new Haematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant (HBMT) Unit with single rooms was identified as a key priority for St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. The Foundation with the very generous support of the community raised $7.3 million in the ensuing four years to enable construction of the new Unit. Commissioning of the new Unit commenced in July 2017 with the official opening being held in early August 2018.
HBMT Unit • 1975 – St Vincent’s Sydney doctors performed the first adult bone marrow transplant in Australia. • The HBMT Ward is the State’s reference centre for all Haematology, Blood and Marrow transplants and research. • The HBMT Unit will improve infection control and provide greater comfort for patients. • While undergoing treatment, a patients’ immune system becomes suppressed. The new Unit includes protective isolation rooms with positive and negative airflow, to minimise the risk of infection when patients are at their most vulnerable. • The 20-single bed rooms will allow patients, and their families, greater privacy during their recovery period.
The new Unit will provide patients with the most advanced methods of care, and access to improved and modern facilities. The new Unit will also provide an important base for translational research to help transform how St Vincent’s treat our patients in the future, applying the very latest research in stem cell therapies relating to blood cancers and auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and scleroderma.
Other Visionary contributions to the construction of the Unit came from the NELUNE Foundation, the Estate of Veronica Beryl Ferris OAM and a loyal donor to the Foundation who wishes to remain anonymous. Advancing Immuno-Oncology at St Vincent’s
the medich FOundation supports innovative trials
Immuno-Oncology is a relatively new area of medical research that seeks to help the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. However despite the promising advances made, only a small minority of patients gain benefit from current immuno-oncology therapy. In 2017, the Salter family established a Fellowship in Immuno-Oncology for Renal Cancer at St Vincent’s. Named in memory of their beloved husband and father, the Phil Salter Fellowship is now supporting Dr Andrew Yam in his work to investigate the role of white blood cells, which appear to play a protective role for cancer tumours and prevent the tumour from being recognised by our immune system. Dr Yam’s hypothesis is that by injecting bacteria into tumours he can help to change the white blood cells to an anti-tumour type thus allowing the body’s own immune system to fight the cancer. “For dad, the availability of immunotherapy came too late to treat his cancer. With the Phil Salter Fellowship, we hope to advance our understanding of immunotherapy to help other people survive renal cancers. For us, the concept of boosting our own immune system to fight the cancer is extraordinary” said Anna Longley.
A generous gift from the Medich Foundation is supporting new clinical trials through the establishment of the Medich Foundation Immunooncology Monitoring Core Facility at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre. The Core Facility is currently supporting Molecular Therapeutics and Screening Trials (MoST) to match new therapies to patients with rare and uncommon cancers based on the individual molecular and genetic make-up of their tumour.

CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY
COMET reduces the escalation of chronic health conditions and can prevent the need for emergency medicine and hospital admissions.
Dr Nick Babidge, Director of Mental Health Services, St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. Caring for our Community
The COMET team
The statistics are incredibly sobering – homelessness in Australia is on the rise with rough sleepers increasing by a staggering 20% since the last census. St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney has long cared for the homeless community in inner city Sydney and this commitment continues to this day with a range of healthcare programs to care for those in most need. A cornerstone program is the Community Outreach Medical Emergency Team (COMET), through which nurses and medical registrars ‘take the clinic to the client’ in cars donated by Sandersons Mercedes Rushcutters Bay. Director of the COMET program, Matthew Larkin, explains: ‘St Vincent’s Hospital sits within the catchment area for the largest homeless population in Australia. As such the Hospital has developed expertise in providing specialised homeless health services that are now recognised nationally for their compassionate and effective response to the complex health needs of homeless men and women. The COMET service connects those at risk with access to a range of health clinics within NGO settings, such as hostels and shelters, as well as street based outreach to those who experience homelessness and to people who do not readily engage in mainstream health services. Complete with a medical registrar and registered nurse, the COMET team travel to those experiencing homelessness to triage, assess and develop a treatment plan for them’ says Matthew.

“The ongoing support of generous donors such as the Order of Malta, Gary Pemberton AC and Margaret Pemberton, John Grant AM, and John Cunningham SCM and Margaret Cunningham is helping St Vincent’s to deliver practical solutions to help our community.”
Pemberton Family drive Homeless Health solutions Gary Pemberton AC and Margaret Pemberton, who have been steadfast supporters of the Hospital’s homeless health service for many years, have this year continued their commitment to COMET with a significant gift that will see the continuation and expansion of the service. Funding from the Pembertons will enable the recruitment of a Nurse Practitioner and Peer Support worker to the COMET team as well as investment in pointof-care testing devices for the COMET cars. The investment will enable new partnerships and clinics to be set up in the local area as well as increased presence of health care services in the City of Sydney homeless patrols. This continues the Pemberton family’s commitment to ensuring strategic solutions to address homeless health issues. In 2012 with their support, Tierney House was opened. This purpose built facility allows homeless people to recover in a safe environment after a hospital admission. In 2017, Tierney House celebrated 5 years of service to the community, having cared for 1251 residents during this time, helping many of them to find permanent housing through collaboration with programs such as Way to Home. Support from generous philanthropists Peter and Jenny Wohl has also helped introduce a full-time Peer Support Worker role in Tierney House ensuring the most empathetic approaches are taken to helping residents address health and social challenges facing them.
Fundamental to our Future In early 2017, the Foundation launched the Fundamental to our Future campaign to raise funds to support a number of important mental health initiatives including the long term vision for the establishment of a new “stepup, step-down” residential service known as PARC (Prevention and Recovery Centre). The Order of Malta entered into partnership with the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation to help establish PARC through a generous pledge of $1.9 million. This commitment provided certainty for St Vincent’s to commission a detailed business case to understand the service model requirements, an important step in the planning process. Funding from generous donor Mr John Cunningham SCM helped clinicians and staff in St Vincent’s Alcohol and Drug Service to access world-leading training in the Open Dialogue initiative led by Professor Niels Buus. Mr John Cunningham SCM and Mrs Margaret Cunningham also provided ongoing support for a full-time Registrar position at Uspace, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney’s youth mental health service. This position ensures that research initiatives such as implementation of the Open Dialogue program can be supported over and beyond the day to day workload in Uspace.
