What an extraordinary year we had in 2017! The excitement was literally building all around us. Visitors not only saw it in the enthusiasm exuded by our staff and volunteers, but also in the progress made on our largest expansion in 40 years—the game-changing, 7.5-acre Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience.

Throughout 2017, the highly anticipated immersive family health, fitness, and sports experience took shape. Visitors gazed with wonder as they saw the development of the 12 outdoor areas where families can shoot hoops, pass or kick a football, “drive” pedal cars, play a round of golf, run or walk on the track, and more! And curiosity was piqued as they saw the Efroymson Pavilion, featuring the National Art Museum of Sport presented by the George and Peggy Rapp Family, near completion. We were overwhelmed by the response to the Legends In the Making Preseason Party— a public celebration held July 22, 2017. The fund-raising event featured Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, our Extraordinary Transformations campaign spokesperson. Thanks to the generosity of many, we ended 2017 at 98% of our $71.1 million goal for the campaign! Adding to the excitement, we announced the creation of the Old National Bank Sports Legends Avenue of Champions. Located within the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience, the avenue features sculptures of legends with Indiana connections who blazed new trails and made a mark on sports history. Six legends attended the announcement, including Bobby “Slick” Leonard, Oscar Robertson, Tamika Catchings, Pete and Alice Dye, and Barbara Wynne. Also in attendance were members of the late Wilma Rudolph’s family, including her son, Xurry Eldridge, and her niece, Kimberly Rudolph. We are honored to immortalize these extraordinary legends:

Most notably, The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture opened June 2017, featuring the new permanent exhibit American POP and a gallery for changing arts and culture exhibits, beginning with DANCE! American POP covers four categories of interest: toys and games; fashion and textiles; TV, film, and music; and comics, arts, and literature. Through these intergenerational experiences, children and families can share memories and explore the influences of popular culture in their lives. Families were overjoyed by our Circus— Starring YOU! and Hot Wheels™: Race To Win™ exhibits. February 2017, inviting children and families to step right up and become part of circus history and fun by walking a virtual tightrope, juggling, mastering lyra rings, and more! Hot Wheels™: Race to Win™ returned in May, putting children in the driver’s seat to experience the thrill of racing while integrating science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning principles. Expanding Our Collections On May 3, 2017, the Boards of Trustees of The Children’s Museum and the National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS) gathered for a very special announcement: the gift of the National Art Museum of Sport and its collection to The Children’s Museum. Works from the 900-piece collection are now displayed in the Efroymson Pavilion within the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience. This gives the museum the opportunity to connect the arts and humanities with the science of health, fitness, movement, and sport.

In 2017, the museum also acquired an impressive collection of 3,250 objects related to DC Comics character Batman, including toys, collectibles, comics, and movie and film props. Indianapolis native Kevin Silva thought the museum was the perfect home for his collection, which was recognized from 2013 to 2015 as the world's largest by the Guinness Book of World Records. Our new Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture feature objects from this family-favorite collection. Every day, children and families immerse themselves in the touching story of Ryan White in The Power of Children: Making a Difference® exhibit. In 2017, we expanded our commitment to remembering Ryan with The Ryan White Letters Project. Through a $102,370 grant from the

Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the museum will create a series of digital educational programs and a research archive of letters written to Ryan by people from around the world. Another Guild Success The Children’s Museum Guild had another outstanding year. The 54th annual Haunted House Wicked Woods brought in 62,797 visitors, and the annual Black Hat Bash and Black Hat Dash were resounding successes. Through these initiatives, the Guild contributed $722,354 to the museum in 2017, bringing their total Haunted House contributions to the museum to more than $12.7 million! Engaging Visitors Every year, we are pleased to be recognized as a leading destination for families. And this past year was no exception. The proof can be seen in our 2017 attendance and membership, with 1.18 million visitors and 33,018 member households. In 2017, we also achieved more than 3.5 billion media impressions, including the Washington Post, ABC, International Business Times, and Chicago Tribune. • Top 20 most-visited museums in North America and #2 North American mostvisited museum by designated market area by Global Attractions Attendance Report The museum’s financial performance was strong in 2017, as we continued to operate within budget parameters while experiencing 15.7% endowment growth. Moody’s Investor Service confirmed the museum’s healthy financial performance and strong balance sheet with an Aa3 credit rating. These extraordinary achievements could not be possible without the support of our donors, members, and visitors. As we continue to build for the future, we celebrate those individuals who supported our Extraordinary Transformations campaign and the initiatives that came to fruition in 2017!

A LEGACY

The Children’s Museum is dedicated to capturing imaginations and changing lives for the better through transformative learning experiences. In 2017, the museum’s legacy of learning was further bolstered by generous contributions to the four-component Extraordinary Transformations campaign and the annual Children’s Museum Fund.

EXTRAORDINARY TRANSFORMATIONS CAMPAIGN GIVING Through the Extraordinary Transformations campaign, the museum has charted its course for the future. The campaign supports four initiatives:

The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture In 2017, we welcomed children, parents, and grandparents to the opening of these new galleries with engaging, intergenerational exhibits featuring dance, film, fashion design, and more! One gallery is home to a permanent exhibit showcasing aspects of American popular culture while a second gallery provides space for temporary exhibits on American arts and popular culture.

The Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience This highly anticipated experience, described as “A National Model for Family Learning in Health and Fitness through Sports,” is designed to help children and families learn and play together and develop healthy lifestyles. 2017 was a key year in completing the experience, which opened March 17, 2018. Complementing the generosity of prior donors to the Riley Children's Health Sports Legends Experience, the museum is grateful to 2017 donors Dr. and Mrs. George Rapp, Dr. and Mrs. John Rapp, and Mr. James and Dr. Patricia Rapp, whose gifts made the acquisition of the National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS) possible; Ice Miller LLP, whose gift established the special exhibition

The Old National Bank Mid-North Promise Program For more than a decade, the museum has collaborated closely with community partners to invest in the six neighborhoods comprising the city’s Mid-North Area. With this longstanding commitment to our neighbors, the museum launched the Old National Bank Mid-North Promise Program in the fall of 2015 to help families with children from the surrounding neighborhoods achieve their education and career goals. In 2017, significant gifts in support of the program came from the Lumina Foundation, the Katz Family Foundation, the Robert and Toni Bader Charitable Foundation, and anonymous donors.

The Mid-North Promise Program is made possible through lead gift support from Old National Bank, with major support from the Lumina Foundation, Central Indiana Community Foundation, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, The Children’s Museum Guild, and generous individual donors Susan and Jim Naus, the Sterrett Family Foundation, The Brougher Family Foundation, the Katz Family Foundation, Bob and Kathi Postlethwait, Jane and Steve Marmon, Robert and Toni Bader Charitable Foundation, and Mary Ann and Gene Zink. The Heritage Group Center for Family Learning in STEM Launched in 2016, The Heritage Group Center for Family Learning in STEM strives to inspire tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, and mathematicians through innovative programs and exhibits such as Dow AgroSciences ScienceWorks and Beyond Spaceship Earth. Our science-based initiatives are supported by The Heritage Group Center for Learning in STEM. Additional support is provided by Eli Lilly and Company Foundation.

As the campaign entered its final stages, the celebration went public with the Legends in the Making Preseason Party on July 22, 2017. The event, which featured Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, highlighted the importance of community support for the campaign at all giving levels. Presented by Priority Group. By the end of the year, the museum raised 98% of its ambitious $71.1 million Extraordinary Transformations campaign goal. In addition to the aforementioned gifts made to the campaign in 2017, The Children’s Museum Guild increased its commitment from $1 million to $1.6 million. ANNUAL GIVING In 2017, the museum was fortunate to have the support of a record 4,616 individual donors. Many of them gave in support of The Children’s Museum Fund, which ensures that all children and families, regardless of income, have access to all the extraordinary offerings of the world’s biggest and best children’s museum. Events that supported The Children’s Museum Fund included: The Grand Opening of The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture welcomed children and families to the museum June 16, 2017, for an evening 8 THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS

of fun featuring American POP and the new temporary exhibit DANCE! Families were greeted by a red carpet entrance and enjoyed a family-style gala with food, entertainment, and familyfriendly activities. A full list of sponsors can be found on page 35.

Museum by Moonlight was a sold-out success. The annual extravaganza for adults 21+ featured a silent disco with the dinosaurs, activities created by the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, Indiana Fever, Indy Fuel, Indianapolis Indians, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and great food and beverages from local restaurants. Museum by Moonlight was presented by AMERICAN FUNDS from Capital Group. A full list of sponsors can be found on page 35.

After Dark events give adults ages 21 and over a chance to experience selected museum exhibits in a whole new way—without kids! In 2017, the museum hosted three After Dark evenings featuring different museum experiences, including an Under the Big Top night showcasing Circus— Starring YOU, an ’80s POP event featuring American POP and DANCE!, and Weird Science, highlighting Dow AgroSciences Scienceworks and its STEMLab, Beyond Spaceship Earth, and Dinosphere®. The 1925 Society is the museum’s young professionals group, which is engaging a new generation of young leaders and fostering professional growth through extraordinary museum experiences. In 2017, the society’s members served on a committee of the museum’s annual fundraiser, Museum by Moonlight. The group also hosted fun, exclusive behind-the-scenes events around Circus—Starring YOU! and The Children’s Museum Guild’s Haunted House Wicked Woods.

On June 16, children and families explored DANCE! and American POP during the grand opening of The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture.

CREATING

EXTRAORDINARY FAMILY LEARNING

Building on a strong foundation of family-favorite exhibits, the museum expanded its offering of intergenerational experiences with Circus— Starring YOU! and the completion of The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture. Two new collections and The Ryan White Letters Project added to the year’s extraordinary milestones.

American POP opened June 17, 2017, as a permanent exhibit within The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture. From Batman to Barbie, comic books to cowboys, Star Wars to star fashions and more, the exhibit invites intergenerational families to explore how American pop culture influences our everyday lives. Featuring more than 600 artifacts from the museum’s vast collection, the exhibit had 431,500 attendees in 2017. The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture are made possible through lead gift support from Lilly Endowment Inc., Mel and Bren Simon, Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Inc., Gerald and Dorit Paul, Thelma L. “T.” Wilds, Sharon W. DANCE!, the inaugural temporary exhibit in The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture, had 453,500 visitors up on their feet—twirling, swirling, and tapping as they explored dance styles through the decades and around the world. Children and families saw amazing dance costumes then took the stage themselves to showcase their best dance moves! Presented by Subway. Supported by Koorsen Fire & Security and the Indianapolis Indians.

Circus—Starring YOU! invited children and families to experience the sights, sounds, and swirl of fun and action of the circus! Entering the Big Top, artifacts and surroundings captured visitors’ imaginations as they visualized the spectacular stunts, awe-inspiring acrobatics, and mind-blowing magic. In 2017, a total of 614,400 visitors got into the act by trying their hands at juggling, walking a virtual reality tightrope, or performing on Roman ladders, lyra rings, and rolla bollas! Presented by Chick-fil-A. Supported by Aquafina and Purdue University.

The Chocolate Slide, a sweet and popular attraction, returned in 2017 luring children and families back to the Sunburst Atrium to enjoy the Willy Wonka-inspired wonderland and zoom down a slide themed like a river of chocolate. Families topped off their visit with sweet treats and good eats purchased at the nearby Chocolate Café!  Supported by Sodexo and HOOSIER ACADEMIES K.12.com.

Hot Wheels™: Race to Win™, a fan and family favorite, returned from May 13 to July 30, 2017, to welcome 152,000 visitors to experience Hot Wheels® like never before! In addition to providing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning opportunities while children compete, create, and experiment with Hot Wheels, this year the exhibit took a closer look at drag racing, with a special focus on female drivers. The exhibit will return to the museum each summer through 2019. Wicked Woods, The Children’s Museum Guild’s 54th annual Haunted House, had brave young visitors hiking a haunted trail through a forest filled with creepy campfires, cabins, creatures, and caves. With 62,797 visitors, Wicked Woods had the fifth-highest Haunted House attendance on record. Presented by Old National Bank.

Jolly Days Winter Wonderland is a popular seasonal exhibit. In 2017, children and parents enjoyed riding down the Yule Slide, visiting with Jingles the Jolly Bear and Santa, making THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF INDIANAPOLIS 11

it snow in the Giant Snow Globe, exploring the Ice Castle, and more! Attendance was 123,000. Presented by Meijer. Supported by Barnes & Thornburg and F. A. Wilhelm Construction Co. Inc.

Doc McStuffins: The Exhibit, which opened in 2016, concluded its appearance at the museum on Jan. 22, 2017, with an impressive attendance of 428,000 over its total run, including 71,000 who enjoyed the experience in the first few weeks 2017. Designed, funded, and launched by the museum, the exhibit was the firstever children’s museum exhibit based on the Peabody Award-winning animated series by Disney Junior, Doc McStuffins. Following its debut at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Doc McStuffins: The Exhibit embarked on an international tour. Presented by Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. COLLECTIONS In 2017, the museum became the home for two important and prestigious collections and secured funding to create digital education programs based on the museum’s archive of letters written to Ryan White, whose story of courage and compassion is told in The Power of Children. The National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS)— A rich, varied, and significant collection of more than 900 works of art (drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculptures of bronze and stone) related to sport was given to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in 2017. The goal of NAMOS is to share the best in fine art depicting sport with the public, and inspire visitors to create their own works. NAMOS is now featured in Efroymson Pavilion of the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience. The National Art Museum of Sport is presented by The George and Peggy Rapp Family with additional support from Ice Miller LLP, The LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation, Inc., and White Oak Foundation (John and Sarah Lechleiter).

Batman Collection—Get on the Batphone and spread the news! In 2017, the museum acquired more than 3,250 Batman artifacts ranging from collector rings to action figures to screen-used props from avid collector Kevin Silva. The Indianapolis native earned a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest collection of Batman memorabilia from 2013 to 2015. A selection of artifacts from the collection are showcased in American POP. The Ryan White Letters Project— We remember Ryan White and his fight against HIV/AIDS as a teenager in the 1980s. Ryan passed away 28 years ago (April 8, 1990), but his story lives on through the The Power of Children: Making a Difference® exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and through the thousands of letters people wrote to him. In 2017, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis announced it had received a Museums for America grant of $102,370 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to create The Ryan White Letters project. Through this digital learning project, the museum will build upon the success of The Power of Children by creating a series of digital educational programs and a research archive using the unique collection of letters sent to Ryan White. The Ryan White Letters Project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

In 2017, The Children’s Museum became home to one of the world’s largest Batman memorabilia collections, just in time to be displayed in American POP.

INVENTING

NEW INTERACTIONS

Year after year, The Children’s Museum strives to offer families and students inventive programs that not only pique curiosity but also teach something worthwhile. This past year was no exception, with a stunning line-up of interactive experiences including the new Circus— Starring YOU! and DANCE! interpretive programs.

Our live-action atrium shows showcased the museum’s creativity in attracting new audiences. An average of 96 interpretive programs and interactions were offered daily, attended by 85% of children and families who visited the museum. Circus— Starring YOU! introduced families to a variety of skills such as magic, juggling, and balancing while interacting with a costumed Ringmaster. The Human Cannonball Atrium Show also drew impressive crowds as one lucky child was selected to be “shot” from a cannon. And in DANCE!, performers instructed families and children to perform simple moves in a variety of styles from square dance to hip-hop. Groups including Dance Kaleidoscope, Kids Dance Outreach, Ball State Dance Company, 31svn, and more came to DANCE! to showcase area talent. Arts and immersion programs in Playscape were supported by Penrod Society. A Mother’s Story by Jeanne White Ginder in The Power of Children was supported by the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Special public events added to the year’s learning programs with events such as National Dance Day, Chinese New Year, Paleopalooza, PlayFit, Santa’s Big Arrival, and Countdown to Noon. Total admission during these events was 86,549. PlayFit events and National Dance Day were presented by Riley Children’s at Indiana University Health. Santa’s Big Arrival was presented by Meijer. Countdown to Noon was presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.

Family, homeschool, and outreach programs had a banner year with 872 participants in homeschool programs and 7,202 children and adults participating in family programs. Family and homeschool programs covered topics from geology to dance, and from exploring exoplanets to the science of the circus.

School visits and membership kept pace in 2017 with 89 member schools. Total school visitation came in at 86,941 attendees. Funding for school visits was provided by Citizen’s Energy Group, Indiana Space Grant Consortium, and the Jerry L. and Barbara J. Burris Foundation.

Lilly Theater is always a favorite of families and educators alike. In 2017, the theater presented three engaging productions: The Jungle Book, Gruff!, and A Visit from St. Nicholas or the Night Before Christmas. The productions were seen by 57,577 visitors, including 20,994 students, teachers, and chaperones who saw a play as part of their school visit. The production of The Jungle Book was supported by the SPM Foundation. The production of A Visit from St. Nicholas or the Night Before Christmas was supported by the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation in honor of the children and families of Christel House.

Schaefer Planetarium and Space Object Theater welcomed 156,507 attendees, including 4,237 students, teachers, and chaperones who saw one of several different immersive multimedia programs about Liberty Bell 7 as part of a school visit. Schaefer Planetarium and Space Object Theater is presented by Patricia Schaefer. Support was provided by Lilly Endowment Inc.

The Children’s Museum Preschool was filled to capacity again in 2017 with 108 students! The program offers young students a unique opportunity to participate in inquiry-based learning and daily access to exhibits and experiences before the museum opens to the public. The Preschool added a weeklong preschool summer camp that was an immersive Spanish experience (Campamento Preescolar), in addition to our other popular summer camps.

REVITALIZING

Investment in our neighboring communities was an ongoing priority throughout 2017. This past year, The Children’s Museum invested $330,525, which included support for The Children’s Museum Neighborhood Club memberships and the Old National Bank Mid-North Promise Program.

Building bright futures has always been a focus for The Children’s Museum. And in 2017, the museum strengthened its commitment to serving Indianapolis Mid-North neighborhood families through The Old National Bank Mid-North Promise Program and ongoing communityfocused programs. These vital initiatives continue to bring positive results.

The Old National Bank Mid-North Promise Program (MNPP) expanded its reach by engaging 50 families and awarding 11 scholarships to youths and adults for college costs and workforce training programs. Launched in fall 2015, the program provides programming and coaching that supports Mid-North families achieving their educational and career success.

OUR COMMUNITY

The Mid-North Promise Program is made possible through lead gift support from Old National Bank, with major support from the Lumina Foundation, Central Indiana Community Foundation, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, The Children’s Museum Guild, and generous individual donors Susan and Jim Naus, the Sterrett Family Foundation, The Brougher Family Foundation, the Katz Family Foundation, Bob and Kathi Postlethwait, Jane and Steve Marmon, Robert & Toni Bader Charitable Foundation, and Mary Ann and Gene Zink.

Free and reduced admission days and programs ensure that all families, regardless of income level, are able to access the museum’s transformational experiences. In 2017, more than 135,000 museum visits occurred through these programs, which included: • 3 Target Free Family Nights attended by 7,797. (The program concluded March 2017.) • 9 First Thursday events attended by 19,668 visitors. Launched in April, First Thursday admission was just $5 per person on the first Thursday of each month from 4 to 8 p.m. • 4 Free Days (Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, El Día de los Niños, and Christmas Eve) attended by 47,935 visitors. • The Access Pass program, which allows qualifying low-income Indiana families to

visit for $2 per person per visit. In 2017, Access Pass had 6,667 member households and accounted for 42,672 museum visits. • The Children’s Museum Neighborhood Club had 874 member households and 8,197 museum visits in 2017. In addition, more than 1,300 attended the museum’s three Neighborhood Nights, when the museum is open exclusively to families in six neighborhoods surrounding the museum. • The Foster Family program, which had 1,073 households and 9,341 visits. Target Free Family Nights were sponsored by Target. First Thursdays were presented by Delta Dental. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was presented by Capital Group Companies and supported by FedEx. Christmas Eve Day was presented by Target and supported by GEICO. The Access Pass program was presented by MetroPCS and supported by the Jerry L. and Barbara J. Burris Foundation.

StarPoint welcomed 79 unique campers this past year to its full-day educational summer camp for youths ages 6–12. All of the activities during the camp are curriculumbased and developed by trained museum educators. StarPoint was supported by Indianapolis Foundation, a CICF Affiliate; Lilly Endowment Inc.; Capital Group Companies; Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, Inc.; The Brave Heart Foundation; Downtown Optimist Foundation; Ayres Foundation, Inc.; and Green BEAN Delivery.

After-School Explorers served a full roster of 24 students in 2017. The program provides an extraordinary opportunity for students in Grades 3–5 to participate in a fun, handson, educational experience at the museum. A variety of activities related to museum exhibits and programs are presented by the museum’s staff. The program is available to students who live in or attend schools or programs in the Mid-North neighborhoods. Support for the After-school Explorers program was provided by Indianapolis Foundation, a CICF Affiliate, Hoover Family Foundation, Lumina Foundation, and Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust.

Behind the successful openings of The Galleries for American Arts and Popular Culture, CIRCUS—Starring YOU! and other exhibits and events were our dedicated volunteers who continually give their time and talent to help bring our transformational experiences to life. We applaud their outstanding efforts throughout 2017.

Our valued volunteers worked tirelessly to continue to propel the museum forward. This past year, adult, family, and corporate group volunteer hours totaled 73,791, which were valued at an all-time record of $1.68 million! Volunteer time included 11,956 hours contributed by 51 interns. The Children’s Museum Guild contributed an impressive 36,362 to our volunteer hours in 2017. In addition to presenting Wicked Woods, the Guild put on the Black Hat Bash and Black Hat Dash and raised an astonishing $722,354, bringing the total Guild contributions to the museum from the Haunted House to over $12.7 million! And finally, the Guild increased its commitment to the Extraordinary Transformations comprehensive campaign from $1 million to $1.6 million in 2017. The Power of Children Awards recognize 6th through 11th grade youths who are improving the lives of others through selfless commitment to service and the betterment of society. Established in 2005, the awards are inspired by The Power of Children: Making a Difference® exhibit, featuring the stories of Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White. On Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis awarded six outstanding individuals with a $2,000 grant from the Kroger Foundation to expand their philanthropic projects; they could also choose a partial university scholarship from IUPUI, UIndy, or Butler University. Keynote speaker for the awards program was Tamika Catchings, four-time Olympic Gold Medalist, WNBA Champion and MVP, and 2015 ESPN Humanitarian Awards winner for her 12 years

of service to her Catch the Stars Foundation. On Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, the day after receiving their awards, the honorees and Tamika Catchings inspired and educated 56 more young people about the power of philanthropy by participating in The Power of Children Symposium. The special event created an opportunity for young people in Grades 5 to 10 to understand how to design ways in which they can make a difference in their world.
