I’m not sure where to start but let’s talk about some good news first. R-Calf filed a suit against the USDA on what they call an over reach of authority in mandating a move to electronic ID. This is USDA’s move to eliminate the metal ID tag for breeding stock & dairy cattle movement. Because of this lawsuit USDA has backed off this demand and this represents a huge win for producers. You can thank R-Calf big time on this one. Like I said weeks ago, lines have been drawn in the sand. Pick a side and see what you want to fight for. Now the Bad news, the cash weigh cow market today trades at nearly half of its cut-out values. The fed cattle market trades near 25% less than their cut-out values. Packers are in the business of making money off processing cattle and are doing a damn good job at it. It seems everyone is on their side and helping them out. As producers continue to lose more portions of the retail dollar, we must try to take our industry back. I really feel Country of Origin labeling is a big step in the right direction. Most of the young pairs traded from $1500-$1700. I really like the fall calving deal. Most notable it gives you a calf to sell in the spring when there just isn’t many around like that.
