CLASS OF 2020

PROUD HISTORY, PROMISING FUTURE. Eastern Illinois University, located in Charleston, is a public, residential university that places priority on teaching excellence. Approximately 7,600 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. Non-traditional and part-time students are enrolled in programs at both on- and off-campus sites. University faculty are involved in a wide range of research and public service activities. During its 125-year history, Eastern has enriched the lives of generations of students and established a lasting reputation for excellence.

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2020.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DR. DAVID GLASSMAN Dear Graduates, Martin Luther King, Jr. has given the world several inspiring words to live by. As we come to the end of what has undoubtedly been the most unique academic year I’ve ever experienced, I’m reminded of one of Dr. King’s quotes, in particular: “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” As members of EIU’s Class of 2020, you have confidently demonstrated your ability to continue moving forward through adversity. Each of you will forever be remembered for your strength, courage, and determination in the face of rapid change and broad uncertainty. It fills me with deep sorrow that we will not be gathering physically to celebrate your amazing accomplishments this spring. Despite that, I am delighted to take even this smallest of opportunities to express my profound congratulations to our Spring graduates. Completing your academic programs and receiving your diplomas is the culmination of years of incredible work. No one can ever subtract that experience from you. Enjoy your accomplishments, and know that the day will soon come where we can celebrate together. Until then, I am absolutely inspired to see how our students have joined our faculty, staff, alumni and friends in continuing to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic with unmitigated compassion and flexibility. EIU’s vision statement praises the importance of creating personal connections that support our students’ academic success. That single vision —unconditional, and autonomous of circumstance—remains the foundation on which we continue to build our reputation. As graduating students, your contributions to that vision reaffirm the value we place in those relationships, and in each other as lifelong members of our EIU Family. Congratulations to our Class of 2020!

David Glassman President

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MS. BARBARA BAURER

To our Spring 2020 graduates, On behalf of EIU’s entire Board of Trustees, let me applaud each and every one of you for your awesome accomplishments at EIU both before and during these unprecedented times. When history writes the story of Eastern’s Class of 2020, it will undoubtedly emphasize your resolve and determination in fusing unwavering Panther spirit with the responsible restraint required in the midst of a global pandemic. We understand and recognize that your time at EIU is ending in an unplanned and possibly sad way; however this in no way should diminish the pride you and your families feel in the completion of this major milestone on your pathway to future success. The strength and resilience you’ve demonstrated in fulfilling your degree requirements will never be forgotten—by us or by those closest to you. Even these most extraordinary circumstances can never diminish your academic accomplishments. Rather, your personal perseverance will become an everlasting reminder of your ability to adapt, to overcome, and to achieve success regardless of what curveballs may be thrown your way. Please know just how proud of you we all are. Each of you is leaving behind a legacy of success that future generations will both admire and follow. Through it all, you have represented our EIU Family in the most positive and praiseworthy way possible. And like those who came before you, your success stories will only add to EIU’s enduring tradition of excellence. Congratulations to you all, from the entire EIU Family. Sincerely,

Barbara Baurer Chair, EIU Board of Trustees

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN To Spring 2020 College of Education Graduates, On behalf of myself and the College of Education, I would like to congratulate you on your graduation from Eastern Illinois University and wish you the very best as you move forward on your life’s journey. We are extremely proud of all that you have done—your academic success, your dedication to EIU, and your commitment to improving the world around you. We are grateful for the legacy that you have created for future EIU students. Graduation is an important milestone, however please do not view it as an ending, instead view graduation as a new beginning. Regardless of whether you are continuing in your current career, starting a new one, or continuing your studies, we know that you leave us with the knowledge and skills needed to face society’s challenges and make the world a better place. In all you do, continue to live the ideal of service to others, respecting the dignity of all individuals. Also, remember that to be most productive you must live a balanced life, understanding the importance of your own health and the value of family and friends. Through this balance of work, service, self, and family, your life’s journey will be enjoyable and rewarding. We sincerely hope your time at EIU has been enjoyable and fulfilling. Remember we are always here for you and we can’t wait to hear of all the new things you accomplish after graduation. Please stay in touch. Congratulations again.

Doug Bower Dean, College of Education

CHARGE TO THE CLASS Ms. Morgan Luttrell, a candidate for a Bachelor of Science in Career and Technical Education with a focus on Business Education from Xenia, Ill., was selected to deliver the charge to the class for the College of Education. To earn the opportunity to deliver the charge, eligible students must meet certain academic requirements and submit a written essay, with the selection made by a faculty committee following a written and oral evaluation. They must also identify a faculty mentor to assist them with developing their project and Dr. Julie Chadd, a professor in Teaching, Learning and Foundations, served as Ms. Luttrell’s essay mentor. MS. MORGAN LUTTRELL Eight years old, in my bedroom, teaching my pretend students with my very real overhead projector; that is when every little girl’s dreams come true, right? Okay, let’s back up. That may not be where my dreams came true but that certainly is where it all began. In the classrooms of teachers who inspired me—the ones who let me take home extra papers and their fancy teacher books. And every day that I took my pretend kids out to recess, flipped the whistle around my wrist and tried to maintain the ten most difficult students ever—I was growing with the knowledge, encouragement, and influence of those who took their passion for education and invested it into my life. Fast forward fourteen years and here we are graduating. How did I get here? Did I teleport from my bedroom? No, it wasn’t that easy, but I will tell you that it was a journey I will never forget. I remember my first day at EIU, three weeks to the day after I had just failed out of nursing school. My thoughts consisted of “How did I get here and where in the world am I going? How will I ever teach students as a nursing school failure? But, to my surprise, there was something good about a room full of unfamiliar faces with unique stories and different reasons for a new beginning. Two years later and I can tell you that EIU provided me with an opportunity for a beginning with new friends, encouraging professors and administrators, and numerous instances for me to share my diversity and experiences. Through the education program, I have not only learned how to write objectives, prepare lesson plans, and master classroom management skills, but I have a whole new respect for what it means to integrate creativity and innovation into teaching. My experiences at EIU have led me to one, really big, realization when it comes to teachers —we are all superheroes. We encourage children to reach for their dreams, we are their biggest cheerleader on the hardest days, and we help pave the way for their futures (in and out of the classroom). I’ve never met Clark Kent or Diana Prince, aka Superman and Wonder Woman, but I suspect even they would struggle at the responsibility, passion, and incredible patience it takes to shape the lives of children each day. As we go forward, I encourage you, EIU, to always remember who sparked your dream, who ignited your fire, who was your personal superhero, and the many lives that you will impact while embarking on the days to come. Congratulations, Class of 2020.

COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear graduates, In honor of your impending graduation, I reach out to you with a message of celebration. Earning a college degree is a significant milestone by any stretch of the imagination. Congratulations! As with any significant rite of passage, graduation brings on emotions that are as unique to you individually as each and every one of you is as a person. You will experience your graduation through the lens of your histories to this point. Perhaps the overwhelming emotions for you are joy, relief, and pride. Or, perhaps, you are feeling anxiety, hope, or even a sense of loss. Crossing that proverbial stage will mean to you what makes sense to you, and only wholly to you, within the context of your own backstory, and future outlook. As much as we would like to believe we helped shape your future in some measure, it was you who had the gumption to push through, to study, and to learn, to question us when you suspected or knew other ways to also be true. It was you who trusted in your capacity to go beyond. It was you who figured out how to balance the demands of classes, teams, groups, work, family, and personal wellbeing against the cruel limitations of time, energy, money, and unhelpful beliefs of yours and others. Congratulations again on these personal counts. Lest I appear to be praising the gospel of personal resilience, let me be clear; as social creatures who live, love, and die in commune with others, the impact of our individual actions on our fate pales in comparison to the crushing strength of structures that have been in place over millennia. It is these social structures—schools, hospitals, prisons, state and local governments—that can either prop people up or drag them down, and do so either through neglect, accident, or by explicit design. As you make your career in health and human services, continue your mindful watch against destructive practices that are, at their core, antithetical to human creativity, agency, imagination, and compassion. Be the eyes and ears of EIU, your alma mater, to help us stay relevant, viable, and productive. If and when we falter, come to our aid. Allow us to be a part of your future as we have now been a part of your past. May your anticipated futures be as bright as the hopes placed on your shoulders. Yours in celebration,

Dr. Özlem H. Ersin Dean, College of Health and Human Services

CHARGE TO THE CLASS Ms. Lindsey Carlson, a candidate for a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Dietetics from Charlotte, Mich., was selected to deliver the charge to the class for the College of Health and Human Services. To earn the opportunity to deliver the charge, eligible students must meet certain academic requirements and submit a written essay, with the selection made by a faculty committee following a written and oral evaluation. They must also identify a faculty mentor to assist them with developing their project and Dr. Melanie Burns, a professor in Nutrition and Dietetics, served as Ms. Carlson’s essay mentor. MS. LINDSEY CARLSON During one of the excursions in my Study Abroad trip, my Costa Rican guide saw me eyeing a sketchy, dismantled trail. He proceeded to explain that particular hike consists of more than 1,000 uphill steps and usually takes people at least an hour to finish round trip. Regardless of his suggestive deterrent, I headed into the jungle with only 25 minutes of daylight. My EIU Study Abroad challenged me to be independent, deviate from my comfort zone, and grow in both confidence and communication—all influential traits pertinent to future success. As a collegiate student athlete on EIU soil, my perspective of limitations was challenged as I strived to accomplish what others may consider impossible. I am not alone when it comes to experiencing challenges. You all are the reason this university is notorious for pushing students out of their comfort zone in order to redefine limits. The experiences we gained and the challenges we faced within our specific departments are constantly illustrating why we can achieve the seemingly impossible in our future careers. Our Military Science department finds a way to balance the demands of academics, ROTC training, and leadership exercises. Our Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation department memorizes 206 bones, 640 muscles, and 360 joints—which to me, seems quite impossible. As for our Communication Disorder & Sciences department, three Eastern graduates in recent years have earned perfect scores of 200 on the national exam; an outstanding accomplishment obtained by only 48 out of 10,670 test takers! In the past century, public health promoters and researchers have established a myriad of successful vaccines for diseases and EIU students in the Public Health Department are prepared for the challenge to achieve health equity. Our nursing students’ commitment and hard work contribute to EIU’s newly established four-year nursing degree program! The graduates of our Human Services & Community Leadership department do not set limitations: they serve populations across the entire lifespan and do so with selflessness. For my fellow Nutrition and Dietetics classmates, we’ve not only mastered

the fundamentals of the gluconeogenesis metabolic pathway, but also learned how to measure cookies. After conquering all of that chemistry and food science coursework, the only thing we deem impossible is the Impossible Burger. Achieving breakthroughs in our career stems from our challenges at EIU because we’ve acquired the mentality to endure infinite possibilities. Each step we’ve taken represents the knowledge we’ve gained, the memories we’ve created, the tears we’ve shed, and the obstacles we’ve overcome. Graduating is a reward, but it is our journey throughout EIU that is rewarding. Congratulations Class of 2020, for redefining the impossible and taking a brave step—or a couple hundred steps—toward what waits for us at the top: a future of undeniable success!

LUMPKIN COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Greetings Lumpkin College Graduates, Congratulations on achieving a significant milestone that will continue to positively affect you for a lifetime! The restrictions brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic have created many changes in everyone’s life, including the cancellation of our commencement ceremony. But make no mistake, your graduation from Lumpkin College is a fantastic accomplishment, and sets you up to make a great impact on the world! You’re entering a job market where employment opportunities and our nation’s economy have been adversely affected by the current situation. But who better to advance the State of Illinois and our country than those with a business and technology background? Business acumen, technology, and strong leadership are needed now, more than at any point in my lifetime. They are being used extensively to continue offering classes, stay connected through virtual meetings, and keep our supply chain network, business and industry functions, governmental infrastructure, and communication systems working properly. You have been preparing, through your academic pursuits as well as personal and professional development, to engage these newfound challenges and opportunities with a growth mindset and entrepreneurial spirit. I have no doubt that your time at Eastern has offered you ample scenarios that have tested you in ways you didn’t imagine before pursuing your degree, and overcoming those trials has increased your confidence. Continue to confront obstacles, and creatively find ways through, around, under, or over them. Focus on lifelong learning and continuous improvement. And use your extensive EIU network—a powerful tool to support your future success. This includes university faculty, staff and support offices, such as the Alumni Office and Career Services, as well as your family of fellow alumni. More importantly, I wish you and your loved ones’ health and happiness. And please stay engaged with your Alma Mater. Few things are more rewarding for university faculty and staff than hearing success stories from, or reconnecting with, YOU, our graduates. E-I, E-I, EIU! Warmest Regards,

Dr. Austin C. Cheney Dean, Lumpkin College of Business and Technology

CHARGE TO THE CLASS Ms. Sienna Mark was selected to deliver the charge to the class for the Lumpkin College of Business and Technology. Dr. William Minnis, a professor in the School of Business, served as Ms. Mark’s essay mentor. Sienna Mark is a senior from Salmon, Idaho. She majored in both management and health administration and is a member of the Apportionment Board, the Honors Council, the Textbook Rental Advisory Committee, the Holiday Hustle, where she served as Executive Director, and the University Board, where she served a Special Events and Homecoming Coordinator. A promising business scholar, she has been a member of the Dean’s List every semester and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, where she received the Beta Gamma Sigma Scholarship. Mark is a university honors student and is also a departmental honors student. She has previously received several awards and scholarships including the Pine Honors College Presidential Scholarship, an Undergraduate Research Scholarship, the Louis V. Hencken Housing Service Scholarship, a Creative Activities Award, and the Distinguished Undergraduate Student Award from the Department of Public Health. Sienna has also received a Talented Student Award and a Grant-in-Aid Award from the Student Life Office, and a Grant-in-Aid Award and Charles Austin Study Abroad Scholarship from the Honors College. This year Sienna was chosen as the recipient of the Management Excellence Award given to the top senior management major, and the Dean Griffin Award—given to the top student in the School of Business. She was an Inspiring Australia Science Communication Intern in Sydney, Australia, and an Administrative Intern at the Steele Memorial Medical Center in Salmon, Idaho. After graduation in May 2020, she will attend the University of Michigan to complete a Masters of Public Health in Health Management and Policy. MS. SIENNA MARK Graduation is a celebration not only for the graduates, but for every family member, faculty, and friend who supported and sacrificed for each student to be celebrating this momentous occasion, and on behalf of the graduating class of 2020, I’d like to begin by saying thank you. I think it is safe to assume that most people have eaten a sugar cookie at some point in their life. There is something comforting about the familiar simple taste of their perfectly molded, identical, cookie-cutter shapes. But when you strip away the icing and sprinkles all you are left to eat is a generic, kinda dry, and often disappointing cookie. In a way these sugar cookies have become a metaphor for our lives. As children we were all asked, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” and as children, we would often respond with ambitious, somewhat fantastical answers such as pirate or ballerina. We are encouraged to dream, but at the same time, we are forced into the cookie-cutter mold of what the world expects us to be. As a result, with time and perhaps a better sense of reality, our responses to this same question change—becoming more realistic and less abstract.

I imagine if you were to answer this question today, you would probably respond by saying how you got your dream job at a top company or explaining that what you’re doing next year isn’t your dream job, but hey…it pays the bills. Or you may even say that you have no idea what you are doing next year, and despite what your parents might say, that’s perfectly alright, too. But did you notice that none of these responses answered the question that was being asked? Because “what do you want to be?” is not the same question as “what do you want to do?” Doing means action. Being takes it a little deeper to imply presence and intention in our actions. While this difference may seem small, who we choose to be is far more important than what we choose to do. We get to choose to be kind, honest, polite, generous, thoughtful, and loving. There is something special in having the ability to just be. In whichever careers we choose to pursue, we’ll face deadlines, pressure, exhaustion…sound familiar? And in that stressful environment sometimes it feels like the only way to get through is to do, do, do. For most of our lives, it felt like all we were taught was how to do. To do work, planning our time around to-do lists, always feeling pressure to do more. We often fell victim to trying to fit into society’s cookie-cutter mold to meet expectations. We need to remember to take a step back and recognize the importance of being. To be enough. To be patient with others and ourselves. And to be

joyful. I don’t know if that’s just a product of growing up or maybe it means we’re finally starting to take our parents’ advice. But what I do know is that a lot of this personal growth took place while we were here at EIU. As much as today is about imagining our future direction, what we’ll do and who we’ll be, it’s also about reflecting on how far we’ve come. EIU proudly claims that they are one of the safest and most affordable options for higher education in the State of Illinois. They are all in for you. Panthers of the past, present, and future. To the faculty and staff at EIU, we aren’t just numbers, statistics, dollar signs, or cookie-cutter students. We are individuals. EIU took those perfectly molded, identical cookies and allowed us to decorate them with whatever we wanted. We were allowed to forge our path and mold our future into anything we wanted it to be. EIU not only fostered our discovery of what we wanted to do with our lives, but it also taught us the skills to become who we want to be. Eastern Illinois University challenged us to accomplish things we never thought possible and inspired us to lead, connect, and engage with others throughout our daily interactions. Although we were treated as individuals we were never alone. I can confidently state that we are over-prepared for whatever comes next. For the past couple of years, you have learned and lived with students who, like you, will continue to stand out. Stand out for how they think, and for how they choose to spend their time. Employers may underestimate us because we didn’t go to a bigger school, but I guarantee you: every one of you will outwork, outperform, and make a lasting impact in whatever you decide to do, because of who you have chosen to be. We have learned to find balance in our lives and activities while still tending to academic duties. We have learned to pursue knowledge adamantly, seek the experience of diversity and treat others compassionately. You can see this in the way we care not only about our work but also who it impacts rather than just which boxes it checks. To the Class of 2020, whether you are graduating early, on time, or took the scenic route, I’m certain some things didn’t happen how you wanted them to and some plans probably fell through. But if those changes never took place you would have never grown. As we leave our beloved cornfields with our hard-earned degrees in hand, I assure you there are going to be some changes. When these changes occur, I urge you to come back to this moment and reflect on the lessons that you learned during your time at EIU. We are well-prepared for our future because EIU allowed each of us to personalize our path to discover what we want to do, and ultimately who we want to be, from day one until today. Today, we receive our degrees, molded for the future, and proud to become alumni of EIU! So, I urge each of you to go out and show the world what you can do and who you can be.

COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

To all students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Graduating Class of 2020,

It is my great privilege and pleasure on behalf of the College

of Liberal Arts and Sciences to congratulate all of you on your graduation from Eastern Illinois University! While this last

semester has been challenging, to say the least, and we are all

deeply disappointed not to be able to share the commencement ceremony together at this time, it takes nothing away from your accomplishments at this university or your prospects

moving forward now. You should be as proud of yourself as we on the faculty and staff are of you. Your dedication, hard work, and perseverance brought you to this successful outcome. You know how to face and overcome whatever challenges come your way—and savor the rewards of a job well done. I hope that you will return later in the year to participate in a

campus commencement ceremony, but I also hope that you and your families create ways

right now to recognize and celebrate your accomplishments. Go forward with confidence in your own proven abilities. Take care of yourselves and your community. And remember that EIU will always stand behind you.

With congratulations and warmest best wishes to you on this auspicious occasion of your commencement,

Dr. Anita Shelton

Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

CHARGE TO THE CLASS Ms. Tachel Brown, a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts in English, who grew up on a research farm near Neoga, Ill., was selected to deliver the charge to the class for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She wants to use the professional and creative skills she developed at Eastern to work as an editor in the publishing industry. To earn the opportunity to deliver the charge, eligible students must meet certain academic requirements and submit a written essay, with the selection made by a faculty committee following a written and oral evaluation. They must also identify a faculty mentor to assist them with developing their project. Dr. Terri Fredrick, a professor in English, served as Ms. Brown’s essay mentor. MS. TACHEL BROWN COVID-19 is causing uncertain times, so we can’t graduate together. I know we’re anxious. I know we’re worried about our lives, our families, our friends. But, I also know that EIU will be there for us, even after we get our degrees in the mail. I know because this isn’t the first time I’ve struggled during college, and I know it’s not the first time for many others. I’ve struggled since I transferred to EIU in Fall 2018. While EIU made transferring easy, life did not. Two months before the semester started, my dad was in an accident that left him

paralyzed from the waist down. This prompted my darkest chapter. I could barely get out of bed, so I missed several classes that fall. I emailed my professors with random excuses, hoping they wouldn’t fail me for lousy attendance, hoping they would give me some grace. What I didn’t expect was that most of them picked up on what I was trying my best to hide: I wasn’t OK.

My mental health declined so rapidly that I considered dropping out that semester. Each day,

while I sat in my bedroom and watched the clock tick by, signifying that I’d missed yet another class, I told myself that I couldn’t succeed. But, I had a sliver of hope: the EIU English faculty

went the extra mile to remind me of my worth. They didn’t see someone who had given up; they saw someone with potential who could succeed if given the right tools. My professors

would compliment my papers and say I was a good writer, and those words of encouragement ultimately helped me roll out of bed and go to class.

The rest of my EIU story is much happier. My professors and peers gave me the courage to seek help. I was diagnosed with PTSD in the summer of 2019, and I began to receive treatment. My last two semesters here were wonderful. I got to know my classmates and professors because I was finally coming to class every day. I earned fantastic grades and truly learned from each

course. Two years ago, I didn’t think my graduation would come. Two years ago, I couldn’t get

dressed without crying. Two years ago, I stopped caring completely. But two years ago, I stepped foot on EIU’s campus, and even though each day felt impossible, Eastern helped me find my way to a healthier, happier life. So, thank you, EIU, for helping me see my potential. Thank you for

helping others who struggle with their mental health find their potential as well. And thank you

for being here for every student while we face the pandemic. We may not be physically together, but I’m still proud to say, “We made it.”

ALMA MATER Music by Frederich Koch – Words by Isabel McKinney For us arose thy walls and towers; Their beauty, strength, and grace are ours. Thy hills and prairies at thy feet; For us in lovely landscape meet. So must our hearts remember thee; So may our lives our tribute be. Strong, true, and beautiful and brave and free; So shall our hearts, our hearts, remember thee.
