ROW OVER PROPOSED INSTALLATION OF CHRIST STATUE

BJP leaders have no humanity, says former MP Dhruvanarayan MYSURU

Former Chamarajanagar MP R Dhruvanarayan on Saturday responded to the controversy over former minister DK Shivakumar allocating land for the proposed installation of a statue of Jesus Christ at Kapalibetta in Harobele village in Ramanagara district. “The opposition to the installation of Christ’s statue by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders exposes their narrow mindset. They have made statements without giving any thought to the feelings of the Christian community,” he said. “Animals have empathy. But the BJP leaders have

no humanity. It is the responsibility of an MLA to respond to the pleas of people. DK Shivakumar has provided the land from the government by paying his own money. BJP leaders should not have opposed this. Christians have

been working for the welfare of the people across the country for ages. They have immensely contributed to the field of education and health. Children of BJP leaders too have studied in convent schools. In which college

There is no value for the feelings of Christians. What is the central and state governments planning to do? Minister KS Eshwarappa has no human values and is insulting everyone. Is it right to hurt the sentiments of Christians? BJP has repressive mindset. They think that there should be nothing apart from Hinduism. Let them share their opinions on inequality in Hin-

duism. Eshwarappa doesn’t know how a minister should behave,” he added. “When I was an MLA, CT Ravi of BJP had asked me why I bring the files of schools and colleges. He had told me that he wins the election by taking a procession to Dattapeetha every year. He had also suggested me to do the same way. BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel is more interested in fairs than Parliament session. While asking, he told me temple fairs were more important for him than the session. Such is the mindset of BJP leaders,” KS, NGB he alleged.

MP Simha questions DKS over allocation of land for Jesus Christ statue MYSURU

Mysuru-Kodagu Member of Parliament Pratap Simha took to Twitter to question Congress MLA and former minister DK Shivakumar who had got the land sanctioned for the construction of proposed 101-foot statue atop a 13-foot pedestal at Kapalibetta in Harobele village in Ramanagara district, a predominantly Christian locality. He questioned the Congress legislator over the proposed installation of the idol of Jesus at Kapali Hill in Ramanagara. “What is the motive behind the construction of this statue? Siddaganga and Suttur? ...or wouldn’t it have been great if you had installed the idol of Dr Shivakumara seer of Siddaganga Mutt,” the Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member questioned. Meanwhile, Shivakumar reacted by saying that hundreds of Hindu

temples had been built in his constituency and that he was not doing it for publicity. Shivakumar said the 10acre land was granted at his behest when the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition was in power. “They wanted to construct the statue two years ago. I stopped it saying it was government land and could run into trouble in the future. So, I got 10 acres granted by the H D Kumaraswamy-led government. I paid the government for the land,” he said. The world’s tallest statue of Jesus Christ “Monument of Christ the King” stands 172 feet tall including the 9.8 feet crown and 54 feet mound in Poland’s Swiebodzin. Inputs: Agencies, KS, NGB

Why intelligence support to armed forces crucial Lt.Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane, ViceChief of Army Staff and the Chief of the Army Staff designate, gladdened the hearts of intelligence operatives on December 21, by saying that the Indian armed forces owed their success to the contributions made by intelligence agencies. Intelligence agencies were blamed for the 1999 Kargil attack. “The Kargil Review Committee” had also concluded that no agency or individual “was able to clearly assess before the event the possibility of a large- scale Pakistani military intrusion across the Kargil heights.” This is because intelligence agencies collect information on parallel tracks on a “need to know” basis in bits and pieces, not revealing the full picture, especially when the trends are short term like border skirmishes. “On several occasions agencies produce incomplete or even conflicting reports. For example, when I was in service, there was a dispute between RAW and military intelligence on the number of Chinese divisions in Tibet. Such issues can be settled only by an empowered “arbiter” who can access even unprocessed intelligence from different agencies and also to insist on feedback to bridge the gaps to complete the picture.”

Pneumonia issues Pneumonia is caused by bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae type b) virus (respiratory syncytial virus) and fungi (Pneumocystis jiroveci), which is a form of acute respiratory infection of lungs, wherein, the sacks (alveoli) are filled with pus and fluid instead of air making breathing painful and limiting oxygen intake. It is the second biggest killer of young children. It killed more than eight lakh children, 15% of all deaths of children below 5 years age in 2017 at global level. In 2018, more than 1.27 lakh children were killed in India alone accounting 14 deaths per hour. In our country 53% pneumonia deaths were caused by child wasting (malnutrition associated), 27% cases are due to outdoor air pollution and 22% cases are due to indoor air pollution. The 10th pneumonia and diarrohea progress report card of Interna-

tional Vaccine Access Center located at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore revealed this. Only 23 countries are accounting for 75% of global pneumonia and diarrohea deaths in children. Both pneumonia and diarrohea can be prevented by immunization, adequate nutrition, and by improving environmental conditions, where the children live in and related deaths can be reduced by the use of antibiotics, oral rehydrating solution and zinc supplementation. Though pneumococcal vaccine is available, it is observed that most of children in these 23 countries do not have access to this vaccine may be due to lack of financial resources. Though bacterial pneumonia can be cured only one third of children with pneumonia are receiving the antibiotics. It is unfortunate that only 3 countries out of 23 countries achieved the 90% target coverage rate for at least

four vaccines, while one was able to attain 90% coverage for any of the four treatment measures as set by the World Health Organization and Integrated Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhea (GAPPD) of UNICEF. Poor personal hygiene also contributes to pneumonia and diarroheal diseases. The recent 76th National Sample Survey on hand washing before eating food and after visiting the toilet indicated that still a good number of people are not washing their hands with soap solution. Release of rotavirus vaccines in 2016 and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in 2017, reduced the deaths associated with these diseases. Our country’s exclusive breastfeeding rate (55%), which is the highest among the 23 countries, also helped to improve immunity level in children. -Dr S V N Vijayendra, Mysuru (Write to [email protected])

Netanyahu sweeps party primary in re-election boost JERUSALEM

29 management students of SDMIMD to visit 8 different foreign universities

n Students exchange programme will give me a global exposure and networking opportunity, says student Khushboo Rani CHAMUNDI HILL ROAD

As part of the students exchange programme and to get students international exposure, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) will be sending 29 students to eight different international foreign universities including the University of Texas in the United States of America (USA) and the University of Bordeaux in France. It is rightly said that life begins at the end of our comfort zone, we might think that we have a lot to explore and experience in life, in our own country, hometown or school. But unless we move out of our comfort zone how will we understand good things about living in another country. The student exchange programme is one of the best ways to experience international education without spending a lot of time away from your native place. Going abroad as an exchange student will not only give us a big leap in our future goals, but an exchange programme will also be a life-enriching experience. We will improve your language skills, gain independence and develop a global perspective on various worldly matters. Stu-

dent exchange programmes are usually for a school year but definitely they are an opportunity of a lifetime. Keeping this in mind, SDMIMD keeps sending its management students to various foreign universities to gain valuable experience so that they are industry fit soon after coming from the institute. They will be staying for few weeks and will start going from January. Khushboo Rani from PGDM programme selected for Exchange Programme at Texas A&M University, USA, from January to April 2020 said “Being selected for SEP at Texas A&M University is itself a dream come true. This programme will definitely be an add-on for my career. It would help me expand my horizon to think and analyse subjects. It would also give me a global

exposure and networking opportunity. As the name SEP suggests, the exchange of knowledge is what I am really forward for.” M S Suhas from second-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programme selected for La Rochelle Business School, France said “I am looking forward to knowing and learn about the classes and subjects at La Rochelle Business School, France. I am also excited to learn about the culture. It also gives me an edge to explore international teaching experience and knowledge. I am also looking forward to building a good network. Since this is my first visit to a foreign country, I am very excited to explore more about the country’s culture, food habits and their people. It

also adds value to my resume. It helps me in a career building. I look forward to learning and expertise myself.” Aimen Javeed from oneyear Post Graduate Certificate in Management (PGCM) selected for University of Montpellier said “To learn European practice of management and tactics. Study the social culture. Learn in a diverse environment. To get out of my comfort zone which will help me in personality development and boost self-confidence.” NR Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD said “SDMIMD’s exchange programmes involve students going abroad for a full term/semester. 29 students have been selected this year (2019-20) for the purpose and they will be studying in various reputed schools

around the world. During the term/semester, students get to study in the same class as many international students and get taught by several faculty from different nationalities. The experience of having different pedagogy is invaluable for their growth. Besides the facility to do cases and projects with students of other nationalities and background affords cross-cultural understanding. Further, the evaluation technique used in these schools enables students to be on their toes and prove their mettle.” The students selected to different foreign universities: University of Texas A &M, USA – 4 students; University of Bordeaux, France – 4 students; University of Montpellier, France - 4 students; Lo Rochelle Business School, France - 4 students; University of Pau, France - 4 students; EAE Business School, Spain - 4 students; University of Heilbronn, Germany – 3 students and National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU), Taiwan – 2 students. We support CAA/NRC: BJP SC Morcha secretary Giridhar V AGRAHARA

BJP SC Morcha state secretary V Giridhar said that he supports the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) by the central government. He was speaking at a press meet held at Mysuru Press Club on Friday. “Dr BR Ambedkar opposed splitting of the nation on the basis of religion. He had warned that it would be very difficult to exchange the belongings of Muslims and Hindus on either side of the border. But due to Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohammed Ali Jinnah, India was split into two. If the then Congress govern-

ment had implemented CAA and NRC, it wouldn’t have caused such confusions. Due to the lack of farsightedness of Nehru, India is having difficulties on this issue,” he said. “I have a question to the progressive thinkers, writers who are spreading fear among Muslims. Shouldn’t Dalits in Pakistan and Ban-

gladesh come to India seeking refuge? Why don’t they have concerns towards Dalits which they have towards Muslims? They are unnecessarily opposing CAA and misleading society. Dalits are not against CAA,” he said. “Dalits will get justice because of CAA. Thousands of Dalits are suffering in Bangla-

desh. They are coming to India as refugees. They will get citizenship and reservation in India due to CAA, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be lauded. The abolition of Article 370 has brought respect to Dr Ambedkar. He had opposed two Constitutions, two flags and two prime ministers in the nation. Dalits in Jammu and Kashmir will also get a reservation. We Hindus and Muslims are born in India and living peacefully. CAA will not affect any of us. Muslims should not fall prey to the political selfishness of some leaders,” he added. “Many Muslims have got their citizenship in the USA, England and Australia. None

of those countries has sent them back. Many Muslims have got citizenship in India as well. They can’t be sent back. Those who are spreading lies should be punished. This Act is required to provide citizenship to Hindus, Christians, Parsis, Sikhs, and Buddhists who are struggling in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh as minorities. We don’t have protection for majority Hindus in India itself. I am an example of such attacks. Then what would be the plight of Hindus living as minorities in those countries? Everyone should understand that this Act would be helpful to control anti-social elements MR/KS as well,” he added.

Paceman Archer escapes bowling ban in beamer row PRETORIA (SOUTH AFRICA)

England paceman Jofra Archer escaped being banned from bowling for the rest of the first test against South Africa after delivering two successive beamers late in the twilight at the end of a frustrating day for his team on Friday. Archer bowled two full tosses at South Africa nightwatchman Anrich Nortje in the penultimate over of the day which was both no-balled by umpire Paul Reiffel, only for his decision on the second no-ball to be rescinded. Two successive noballs for beamers would have meant Archer, key to England’s ambitions in the four-test series, would not be allowed to bowl for the remainder of South Africa’s second innings. The drama unfolded as England were left frustrated in their bid to remove Nortje, who had been sent out to bat when South Africa’s fourth wicket of the second innings fell with some 20 minutes left of the day’s play. Archer attempted a slower

ball but it came out of his hand as a full toss and was no-balled by Reiffel. He then followed it with a similar waist-high delivery which Reiffel again called a no-ball before quickly withdrawing his decision after England protests. The umpire seemed to accept it was a botched attempt at a slower ball Inputs: Agencies, NGB rather than a malicious delivery.

stating that there is no precedence for it. While Mary always stated that she would abide by whatever selection policy the BFI has, she had indicated an aversion to a trial, taking the example of other sports in which athletes don’t have to give trials. “Even in other games like badminton, who gives trial? Have you seen Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu appearing for trials? But in our case it is different,” she had said in August. NAV, Inputs: Agencies

Russia challenges WADA doping ban

Russia on Friday formally contested its ban from major sporting events over doping violations, the head of its RUSADA anti-doping agency said. “In accordance with established procedure, today (Dec 27) we have sent a package of documents to WADA,” RUSADA director general Yury Ganus told reporters in Moscow. “The package contains a notice about disagreement with WADA sanctions.” Ganus also said he had sent a letter to

WADA informing the anti-doping of his personal stance. “I regret to inform you that all my attempts including attempts to introduce changes to the RU-

SADA notice have failed,” said the letter. Ganus, who has long argued for a major crackdown by Russia against doping

cheats, said on Thursday that “it is practically impossible” to contest the WADA ban. WADA this month banned Russia for four years from major global events, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, over manipulated doping data. Russian President Vladimir Putin has called the sanctions politically motivated, indicating a lengthy legal battle loomed. He argued that the majority of Russian athletes were clean and should not be deprived of

the right to compete under the Russian flag due to the actions of some individuals. Ganus, whose rigorous stance puts him at odds with his own government and supervisory board, argues that Moscow needs to accept the sanctions and own up to its faults in order to be able to reform. Speaking to AFP, Ganus said he had however to relay the decision of the supervisory board. “This is not our decision,” he stressed. Inputs: Agencies, NGB
