NORTHWICH RUGBY CLUB
“the Rugby Matters”
Saturday 29th February 2020
WELCOME Greetings fellow “Blacks” supporters. Lets leap straight in and inform you Keswick visit Moss Farm for the first time, I’m sure our travelling Blacks supporters will recall the fantastic hospitality received on their visit to Cumbria and trust a similar Northwich welcome will be forthcoming. Northwich 2nd visit LSH 2nd and Northwich 3rd journey to West Park 3rd Today’s pre-match buffet is kindly sponsored by Frank Hewson. Frank has been a Blacks supporter for many years, he was also one of our very first members to take up a life-time membership during the 1980’s, saving himself a few pennies over his long association with Northwich (he may well offer the Coffin Dodgers a Port with his savings). Life-time memberships are still offered to supporters if interested see our current membership sec Chris Hart. Despite the disappointment against Firwood Waterloo the blacks are still very much in the hunt. Waterloo was always going to be a challenging fixture, however from the 18 players named on our teamsheet 13 came through our junior section, in comparison only 3 from Waterloo progressed via that route. The fixture at Waterloo was a hard fought contest with Northwich sustaining 5 serious injuries and at various stages during the 80 minutes only had 12 players competing on the field. Northwich are only 2 points off second place and after the weeks rest will now enjoy 3 matches at home. And Postie continues to say “Every team in this league can beat every other team.”
ADVISORY NOTICE TO VISITORS. NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED - EXCEPT SERVICE DOGS THAT AID WITH DISABILITIES. It is the policy of our landlords BRIO & endorsed by NRUFC for heath and safety reasons that NO DOGS are allowed on any of the grounds at Moss Farm, irrespective of whether this is the pitch or the surrounding areas.
Did you know? Until Julius Caesar came to power, people observed a 355day calendar - with an extra 22-day month every two years. But it was a convoluted solution to the problem and feast days began sliding into different seasons. So Caesar ordered his astronomer, Sosigenes, to simplify things. Sosigenes opted for the 365-day year with an extra day every four years to scoop up the extra hours. This is how the 29 February was born. It was then fine-tuned by Pope Gregory XIII
On this day at Northwich RUFC Sam Naylor was born, the chance of being born on a leap day is often said to be one in 1,461.
On this weekend, 1998 Former England captain Tony Neary was jailed for five years for stealing almost £300,000. Summing up, the judge said: "These offences go to show how far you have fallen." Neary's QC added: "Not so long ago he stood on top of the world. Now he is divorced, bankrupt and living on social security." While in low-risk Ford Open Prison, Neary coached the Lags XV. 1880 The RFU staged a home international outside London for the first time. The first Calcutta Cup took place at Whalley Range, Manchester. England defeated Scotland on a scoreline of two goals to one goal after Henry Taylor scored two tries and George Burton, Thomas Fry and Temple Gurdon scored a try a piece and captain Lennard Stokes kicked two conversions. William Brown scored the Scots' only try with Malcolm Cross converting.
SENIOR RUGBY Last week: Northwich vs Firwood Waterloo review The blacks travelled to Blundellsands in the firm knowledge that this was going to be the test of the season to date. The match started well for Northwich as they were able to take control. With 10 minutes gone the ball was moved to the man of the match Shaun Burmah to score. Baldwin added the extras. Five minutes later a long throw fell into the hands of Chris Dale who carried over the line for a try. Baldwin again added the extras. Shortly after, Chris Dale suffered a knee injury that forced him from the field of play. This was a blow to the visitors as he was at the heart of blacks attack. With the half entering stoppage time Northwich suffered a meltdown. The half ended with the blacks ahead by 14-10 and wondering how they had let the early dominance slip. The match restarted with the home side in control. Lady luck deserted Northwich as injuries left them without Chris James and Sam Naylor. Despite this they continued to press only to concede a penalty which extended the home lead to six points. With the match in stoppage time it looked like a bonus point would be the only reward. However, even that prospect disappeared as FW rounded off the afternoon scoring a fourth try which was converted.
Northwich 1st today’s opposition Keswick We express our empathy to Keswick, unable to get flood insurance since storm Desmond flooded their grounds in 2015, Ciara arrived and though not as severe 6 inches of water still flooded the clubhouse, damage was
limited as volunteers quickly moved fittings to higher areas. Where would any of us be without “Volunteers!” After promotion as Champions of Cumbria Div 1 with an unbeaten home record and 5 wins away, this term the Cumbrians have found North 1 West more challenging. This campaign has seen only 1 home win vs fellow strugglers Warrington, and so far Keswick have suffered 9 defeats on their travels. The only away win recorded under lights on the artificial surface at Penrith. Since a heavy defeat at Birkenhead Park the weather has played havoc with 2 home fixtures postponed. Last weekend Keswick hosted Broughton Park losing 0-24. Earlier in the season at Keswick, Northwich were able to run in 8 tries against a very young and enthusiastic outfit. The match started well for the blacks as they carried the ball with purpose and ambition. The first score was a Baldwin try following a well organised lineout. Baldwin converted his own try and it looked like more would follow quickly. This was not the case as the next 25 minutes saw the blacks force the ball, when so often a slower approach would have been the better option. During this period Director of Rugby Martin Poste was visibly apoplectic. However the blacks started to play with control during final ten minutes of the half scoring three unanswered tries. In the second -half as in the first, in the final quarter the blacks delivered 10 minutes of excellent rugby. During this period three tries were scored. This was clearly a good result for the blacks who then had a one week break before facing Stockport. And we all remember what happened at Stockport, we hope there is no repeat following last weeks rest.
Coffin Dodger Banter: A word of warning to our players going into town tonight. History deems February 29th as the day when any three-eyed bearded woman whose weight happens to be more than an Aviva double decker bus, is allowed to pursue any man of her desire relentlessly for twenty-four hours and beat the hell out of him until he agrees to marry her.
Northwich 2 & 3 A good win, for the first time since before Christmas Northwich 2 managed to dominate a match for more than the first 20 minutes. Despite position changes and a long list of injuries, last Saturday’s performance was one of the best that this side has put in since Chris Bradshaw took over as 2s manager.
Northwich 2 Last weeks win over Lymm opened up breathing space at the bottom end of the division for Northwich. Whilst there were some negatives to take from the game such as a lack of fitness in the final 20 minutes, the positives massively outweighed the negatives and puts us in a good position going into the final 7 games of the season. Chris saying “I believe that a minimum of 4 wins will secure our position in the league for next season.” This week they travel to LSH in 4th.
Northwich 3 Without a game since 1st Feb visit 7th placed West Park (St Helens).

Northwich Rugby Column (Northwich Guardian) 2020 is a leap year consisting of 366 days by coincidence this weekend Northwich Rugby Clubs Chris Heywood plays his 366th game for Northwich 1st team.
15 years service and just reaching his peak we take a look at Northwich stalwart Chris Heywood, and introduce his apprentice Tom Clarke. Chris is also the Clubs 1st team current, longest serving member, playing his first game for the “Blacks” back in 2003/04, after joining aged 18 from Macclesfield. During his first season when the Blacks played in Cheshire & Lancs League 1, he not only showed his prowess as a second row or flanker but also as a winger. Chris has great commitment and is a hard uncompromising competitor with a never say die attitude, exhibited in his first sin-bin offence in the same season vs Bowdon. Also gaining his first man of the match award vs Warrington that same year. Chris has served the Club with distinction as a player and was an integral part of Northwich Rugby Clubs undefeated season and EDF Vase winning team at Twickenham during 2006/07. With a season sabbatical to go travelling around the Far East on his return home he stepped off the flight and went direct to Warwickshire
where Northwich were playing Berkswell & Balshall RFC, scoring the Blacks first Try of the game. His love of the game has not in anyway abated over the years and he continues to run out with the 1st no doubt he will be the first name on Martin Poste’s team sheet for this weekends fixture vs Keswick at Moss Farm 2.15 kick-off. In comparison another 18 year old commenced his Northwich rugby journey, Tom Clarke made his “Blacks” debut September 2018, playing along-side Chris Heywood. Tom progressed during the season coming off the bench at the seasons start before securing a starting place by the mid-way point his performances improving displaying an intensity in the tackle, ending the campaign with a medal, as a member of the Northwich RFU Cheshire Vase winning team. Overcoming an early season injury this term, Tom is once again a Northwich regular and is sure to be the second name on this weeks team sheet.
Mini (Superstars) & Junior Whilst the elements were playing havoc with many junior teams in the area Northwich Superstars didn’t put the blame on environmental warming or climate change, instead they took the initiative and moved indoors for a spot of warm and dry training. This was followed by Sunday dinner in the clubhouse which many of the M&Js parents enjoyed, whilst watching the 6 Nations with a wine or beer. In appreciation Northwich arranged with a higher body for a spell of sunshine to finish off the afternoon allowing the children to expell their remaining energy on the activity play area. A happy Sunday for all the family.
