NORTHWICH RUGBY CLUB

“the Rugby Matters”

Saturday 8th February 2020

WELCOME Greetings fellow “Blacks” supporters, with Northwich 1st & 3rd stringing wins together and 2nd in a relegation fight, this week brings some tricky fixtures all round for our senior teams. Once again our 3rd team meet 1st team opposition, Northwich 2nd keep it local visiting Crewe & Nantwich with the 1st at home to Bowdon. A 1st XV home fixture means your freebie pre-match buffet is once again offerred to all spectators, this week sponsored by Derek Bowden. Derek has been following Northwich for what seems like an eternity, many an ex-player can recollect him leaning against his bike whilst observing from the touchline, the bike may now be retired to the shed but Derek is still to be found home or away proudly following the Blacks. And I know he is an avid reader of our media. “Postie & Simmo” we recognise not all our supporters follow all our different social media but some on Facebook will have seen our first very successful podcast interview, where Postie gives his views and forethoughts on the weekends fixtures interviewed by Andy Simpson, we hope to continue this every Thursday with a Live podcast streamed prior to training with a catch-up version on the website.

ADVISORY NOTICE TO VISITORS. NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED - EXCEPT SERVICE DOGS THAT AID WITH DISABILITIES. It is the policy of our landlords BRIO & endorsed by NRUFC for heath and safety reasons that NO DOGS are allowed on any of the grounds at Moss Farm, irrespective of whether this is the pitch or the surrounding areas.

8th February. Did you know? On this day at Northwich RUFC 2014 8th February Northwich 1st XV 32 Anselmians 5. In extremely difficult conditions the Blacks put in a great performance and secured their 6th bonus point win in a row.  Despite the dreadful conditions the hardy home supporters were treated to a dynamic and ambitious display from the ever improving Northwich. With seven of the forwards all capable of playing in the back row, mobility played a massive part in the Blacks ambitious play Team: Cartman, James Kingi, Heywood, Smith, C. Dale, McKibbin, Watts, Houghton, Underhill, Campbell, R. Dale, Chubb, Dutoy, Simes, Thompson, Farley, D. Jones On this day, 1958 Amazing as it may seem in these days of increasing concern over concussion, England fullback Jim Hetherington was seen to clutch his head and lurch across the pitch. It emerged he was blacking out after being poleaxed shortly after halftime but he was persuaded to play on as England clung on for a 6-0 win over Ireland. Hetherington had also been concussed a fortnight earlier against Australia, on that occasion admitting he had no recollection of much of the game.

SENIOR RUGBY Last week: Northwich vs Warrington review The blacks were under no illusion that this was going to be a fiercely fought contest and that they would have a real fight on their hands, and so it ensued with 6 yellow cards shown. Facing the wind in the first half the black were forced to carry the ball into a highly committed Warrington defense. However, with just 5 minutes on the clock some slight of hand from Bradshaw in the tackle put Richard Dale away for the first score. As the half entered stoppage time Northwich took control and Warrington conceded a penalty try following the immense pressure bringing the half to a close and a 19-10 lead for the visitors. With the wind at their backs in the second-half Northwich took the initiative and scored two tries in the opening 20 minutes both converted by Baldwin. Warrington continued to ask questions of the blacks defence and finally got their reward as the match entered stoppage time. with a converted try. This brought the contest to an end and gave the black a hard fought bonus point win. Final score 22-33.

Coffin Dodger Banter On the journey to an unfamiliar Warrington ground last week our driver came to a junction in the road “which way he shouted” voice from the back said “where do you want to go,” I don’t know said our driver, “then it doesn’t matter” came the reply from the rear.

Northwich 1st today’s opposition Bowdon Following their promotion into North 1 West it’s fair to say Bowdon have found it tough at times during this season, when the teams met back in October Bowdon were in the bottom three and there they remain. And so far this term have not registered an away win. Their 3 home wins coming against Douglas, Keswick & Vale. Last week Bowdon lost to league leaders Burnage 24-35, leaving them in a scrap for survival with the bottom 3 teams still to play each other in the second-half of the season. Northwich had a fierce and fiesty game vs fellow strugglers Warrington and today may well be similar with Bowdon fighting to remain in North 1 West. In their last meeting it was Bowdon who drew first blood with two tries in the first quarter, Northwich coming back and leading by two points at halftime. The second half started well for the blacks with an early Baldwin penalty extending the lead. Northwich took control with the back row seeming to be first to every breakdown and man of the match Mike Bradshaw hungry to carry the ball to the opposition. Although it was a tricky encounter, final score 12-38. Postie says “Bowdon are a good team. “I know they’re fighting at the bottom, but we know they will put a good shift in, so we have to start strong.”

Northwich 2nd & 3rd Both Northwich teams are individually committed to improve the 2s are training hard, but would benefit by having more leaders within their ranks. Nemo speaking about the 3s said “I do think we play well in parts and as a social side have some strong youngsters but at times we could do with a few experienced heads to guide us.”

Northwich 2 visit Crewe & Nantwich 2nd, 2.15pm KO. C&N are in 8th and did Northwich a favour last week by defeating Anselmians who are just 2 points above the Stags. A Northwich win today could see a little gap opening up for Northwich in their fight for survival at this level. Consistancy is the key to Northwich turning their season around in the back end of this campaign, the team have proven they can be a match for anyone in this division but they need to play to their ability for the whole 80 minutes.

Northwich 3 coming off the back of 2 wins journey to 3rd placed Oldershaw 1st. Whilst Northwich are in a precarious position bottom of the table they are punching above their weight meeting five 1st and four 2nd teams in this division, who are all well-drilled sides seeking to progress. It was always going to be a tough task but against Wallasey 1st last week Northwich have shown on their day and with a full squad they can be competative and match anyone winning 31-26.

Northwich Rugby Column (Northwich Guardian) There are many local sports clubs, football and others who run junior teams but how many of these junior players go on to actually play for that clubs leading team! Rugby is quite unique in this respect whereby it develops it’s junior players in various stages throughout their involvement progressing onto play for the senior teams. Already this year 23 players have been selected in the Northwich 1st team squad, 19 of which came through our junior section. And 8 of these players are under the age 20. Some of these highly promising players will no doubt be an integral part of the Northwich rugby future.

In the early 2000’s Northwich were winning community awards for it’s junior section achievements year on year until a slow decline occurred, a hard lesson was learned. Northwich acknowledges that over a number of seasons there had been a lack of investment in the junior section, so 12 months ago a re-building program commenced with just 3 players attending now over 80 children participate aged Under 5 to U13, every Sunday at Moss Farm from 10.30am. A success we are determined to drive forward and continually invite children of any ability to come down and “give it a try”. The superstars initiative prides itself on having the community at its heart, where every child matters and enjoyment is key, giving a positive experience for coaches and children alike. Children from 3 year old can begin their rugby journey at Northwich. Playing and importantly coaching numbers continue to increase and it’s never to late to join in. The current superstars have made outstanding progress and developmental fixtures are arranged for age group teams U7,U8, U9 U10 & 11. And the U13 age group also have increasing numbers and fixtures. Northwich have had outstanding age groups coming out of the junior ‘s which is reflected in the number of players who have progressed into the senior sides. We’ve been working hard on managing the transition from Colts to the senior set up. Forming a development pathway for the boys to integrate and progress through to the senior section and it worked very well with several of these boys getting chances in the 1st XV as the seasons progressed with others now playing senior rugby for us or other clubs. The club recognise it will be a number of years before a Colts team is once again formed and the next generation of Northwich RUFC are ready to integrate into senior rugby but the pathway from U17 to senior teams continues every Thursday 7pm at Moss Farm and there is always a welcome for interested players to become involved.
