chairman'smessage Thank you to our clients old and new for entrusting us with your commissions and thank you to our staff for your dedication, professionalism and talent to attract and execute these good projects. Thanks to both of you Aedas has maintained a buoyant work load through the very difficult year of 2015 as China’s economy continued to slow and Europe suffered further set backs. We have been successful in broadening our work scope and redirecting our marketing efforts to overcome the economic slowdown. In China we acquired more tech parks and headquarters office work to supplement our mixed commercial and residential work and in Southeast Asia we have been appointed to new projects in Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Malaysia. In Hong Kong and Singapore we maintained our flow of traditional infrastructure work and enjoyed an increase in work indigenous to these two cities. Our Middle East offices are growing to match the regions' increased activities whilst Aedas RHWL and Aedas Arts team in London are contributing significant design work into the practice. Aedas geographical spread and scope of work are well suited for us to participate in China’s Belt and Road trade route initiative. We are already working with Greenland in Iskandar, Malaysia and with China Merchants upon the ports of Djibouti and Dalian. Aedas has offices along the Maritime Silk Road from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore in the East to Dubai, Abu Dhabi in the Middle East and London in the West. Our offices in Chengdu and New Delhi and work throughout West China will serve the overland Silk Road well into Western Europe. In 2016 Aedas will be increasing our presence and work along the Belt and Road. At times of economic downturn cities rejuvenate through careful interventions in the existing urban fabric. With the introduction of the 2014-2020 New Urbanisation Policy, China is undergoing a period of adjustment in its urbanisation policies at the same time as the Western world is striving to understand how it can solve its cities' problems through greater density. Aedas experience in high density planning and architecture, as well as our international knowledge and local application can help developers and authorities alike to develop new urban forms and concepts to meet these new demands upon our cities. We have developed a series of coordinated papers, lectures and workshops to share our ideas upon urbanisation in the 21st century and look forward to continuing work to improve our urban environment with our clients in the years to come.

Aedas global platform for creative excellence in design enables some of the world’s most talented designers to plug into the latest information and delivery systems they need to produce truly world-class design solutions. point of view

values

We believe that a diverse world is a more interesting world.

Diversity We are diverse by design. Aedas brings together expertise from across the world. This means that each project includes people on the design team that understand and respect the social and cultural needs of the local community they are designing for. It also means that every project, no matter how large or small, can draw on all Aedas’ collective wisdom from across the world.

Globalisation brings great advances and benefits: greater understanding of different cultures, the ability to be almost anywhere in a matter of hours, and the falling away of social and cultural barriers. But with this also comes the feeling that the world is becoming more homogenous and potentially less interesting. We have a fascination for and high regard for the social and environmental differences of different cultures and communities. These differences have been cultivated over many years. They are the reason that the world is unique and exciting to experience. In every commission we undertake we first seek to understand the society and culture of the communities we design for.

Creativity Above everything we place creativity and creative thinking. We recruit inspired and independently minded people who are passionate about design and want to excel. We provide them with the freedom and space to dream, and because our organisation supports, informs, enables and empowers them, they are able to deliver solutions that create a positive impact in the communities that they are intended for. Innovation We constantly look to push the boundaries of what’s possible in every new project that we undertake. Our global platform provides all of our experts globally, with access to this latest thinking, so that clients, large and small can benefit. Delivery Great thinking is meaningless if it doesn’t become reality. We have invested heavily in systems and processes to ensure that our ideas are executed to the highest standard and that our designers can draw on the latest technical expertise. We have the delivery systems to make great design a reality wherever we work in the world. Quality Quality permeates every activity and decision we take. From the people we employ, the projects we design to the selection of all the numerous building components that are used to construct the projects. We apply the highest standards to everything that we are involved with.

A YEAR IN It has been a year that Aedas continued to achieve much. We celebrated our 30 years of design excellence by delivering exciting projects, lecturing on our design philosophies, advising on urban planning, expanding into new building types and constantly reinventing ourselves to benefit from the changing markets.

Belt and Road

Aedas has projects along the Belt and Road

China’s proposal of Belt and Road refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, aiming to facilitate connectivity and cooperation among Eurasian countries. Over the years Aedas has designed and completed projects in cities along the proposed Belt and Road. Chairman Keith Griffiths has also been appointed Honourary Advisor for the inaugural Belt and Road Summit to be held in May 2016 in

Hong Kong. He shared in a video produced by Hong Kong Trade Development Council that as the gateway to and from China and with enormous connectivity to Southeast Asia, Hong Kong is well placed on the Belt and Road. “Hong Kong will have to re-establish its links through Southeast Asia onto Africa and the Middle East. It has these links and it just needs to reopen the doors,” said Keith.

Keith Griffiths talked about Hong Kong's position on the Belt and Road. To watch the video, please visit http://www.beltandroad.hk/

Experiential Retail at Aedas' retail experts Christine Lam and David Clayton shared their insights on designing experiential retail and leisure destinations at MIPIM Asia held in Hong Kong. Christine, Executive Director, emphasised that Chinese like socialising with family members and friends, and shopping malls are becoming centres for social congregation that go beyond traditional shopping. David, also Executive Director at Aedas, further elaborated that, “Nowadays shopping malls are palaces of experience instead of palaces of consumption. So, we incorporate dining, entertainment, cultural and sports facilities to the retail complex and create a leisure destination with unique experience." Christine Lam and David Clayton spoke at MIPIM Asia 8

Sincere Plaza is the latest addition to Sincere Group’s shopping mall collection designed by Aedas

Sincere Group’s Sincere Plaza, the new high-end shopping centre in Chongqing, China, held its grand opening ceremony in June. As Design and Project Architect, Chairman Keith Griffiths led Global Board Directors Ken Wai and Andy Wen, Project Director Ed Lam, Managing Director - China William Wong and Deputy Managing Director - China Yin Sheng Liu to attend the ceremony. Keith, as a guest-of honour, shared the design concept with the guests and media. Sincere Plaza and Sincere Financial Center form a new mixed-use complex in Chongqing (see more about the project on page 16). The design is inspired by the twin

rivers and gorges of the Chongqing landscape and is a continuation of the angular shapes derived from Chillida sculpture which were established by Keith at Starlight Place also for Sincere Group.

Sincere Center in Shanghai will be completed in 2016. Aedas designed the retail mall, and co-designed the master plan for this mixed-use development.

on Future Retail Design and Trend Interview Prestige Chairman Keith Griffiths spoke to Prestige Hong Kong edition about the company and design philosophy. “We believe very strongly that the projects that we’re doing should be embedded in the local culture and community,” he shared. “I would argue that very, very few building types can be designed offshore by people who do not know intimately the cities and countries that they’re designing for.” This philosophy explains why Aedas has a network of global offices. Future Retail Design and Trend Forum by Aedas and TCSC

Aedas Chairman delivers a Chairman Keith Griffiths gave a thought-provoking speech ‘Surprising Cities’ at TEDxFuxing Park in Shanghai, China, guiding attendees to think about their ever-changing lifestyles and the future of cities. “You or someone you know will realise by the time you retire you will have wasted three years of your life travelling to work,” Keith opened his speech with his own experience in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai. While our entire lives have become faster and more convenient, our cities are having a hard time adapting to our new demands for flexibility, variety and convenience. “It is serendipitous that China has the opportunity to create 21st century cities at this time of great change in our pattern of live, work and recreation,” he said. 10

With the continuous emergence of technologies, city dwellers are demanding for increasing vibrancy, efficiency and connectivity. Keith predicts that the future cities will consist of high-density city hubs that are built around the CBDs, over subway interchanges and major road intersections. “In these city hubs we live, work and recreate within a short distance and much shorter journey time,” he said. The land outside the city hubs, on the other hand, will be developed into lower density residential communities with parks, community centres and educational facilities for families. The mix of different building types already exists in our cities – mixed-use complexes, SOHO, loft, elevated parks, public rooftops, but we need to join the dots and develop live-work-recreate developments in areas of high

talk in Shanghai connectivity across the city. “With public spaces at multiple levels, elevated parks and bridge links as connectors, we are going to create exciting three-dimensional, connected spaces where people can enjoy all the happy choices and serendipity of a modern city life,” he concluded. Themed ‘Serendipity’, 15 speakers from various disciplines shared important ideas and sparkled conversations at TEDxFuxing Park.

Keith shared his vision for live-workrecreate city hubs in future cities

In view of the five key challenges of retail: attraction, retention, ease of use, integration and revenue, Aedas co-organised the ‘Future Retail Design and Trend’ forum with Taiwan Council of Shopping Centers in Taipei, which attracted over a hundred industry professionals to participate in the discussion on retail design, trend and development. Global Board Director Andy Wen kicked off the event by pointing out that architects should explore the rich historic, social and cultural threads from the seemingly empty site context and create culture-driven

design strategies; while Executive Directors Christine Lam and David Clayton explored how architectural and spatial design empowers traditional shopping centres when online shopping is becoming a trend. The forum also included a panel discussion moderated by Victor Liu, General Manager of RD International Ltd. Jeff Tsai, Chairman of Taroko Development Corporation and Tony Chao, Managing Director of Jones Lang LaSalle, Taiwan joined Andy, Christine and David in an inspiring discussion on design trends and planning strategies of vertical malls.

The Star Vista on Futurarc Unlike the usual air-conditioned shopping malls in Singapore, The Star Vista relies on natural ventilation in its common spaces. Its sustainable design was included in Futurarc, a green architecture magazine in Asia Pacific, in September. Designed by Andrew Bromberg of Aedas, it incorporates a number of strategies to optimise comfort. The form of the building channels prevailing northerly and southerly breezes and accelerates them through its common spaces. Canopies offering shelter from sun and rain further direct the breezes.

Keith Griffiths believes that projects should be embedded in local culture and community

Aedas in Hong Kong Keith Griffiths shared with Hong Kong Trade Development Council Hong Kong Means Business how Aedas reaps the benefits of having planted roots in Hong Kong on its e-newsletter in August. He believed that Hong Kong’s advantages he first identified decades ago continue to be crucial for further spreading Aedas’ work in China and Asia.

Stunning Architecture in Hong Kong Inheritance and Creation Global Board Director Andy Wen spoke at the 1st International Conference on Sustainable Buildings and Structures and the 2nd Low Carbon Construction Industrialisation Forum in Suzhou, China. During his presentation with the topic of 'Inheritance and Creation', he pointed out that facing the global wave of urbanisation, architectural practices are frequently challenged by chaotic and featureless site conditions. Behind seemingly empty context, there rest rich historical, social and cultural threads. Architects should explore culture-driven design strategies, which could guide their designs in the market-oriented urban developments and retail oriented mixed-use complexes. He further elaborated the approach of Aedas to create iconic yet sustainable architecture through a series of his successful projects, which include the forum's venue Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool Univeristy Administration Information Building. He integrated the local environment and cultural elements into the architecture so as to connect people's life with sustainable architectural design.

Aedas-designed Lè Architecture in Taipei, Taiwan has been topped out. The design of this office building was inspired by river pebbles, creating a unique aesthetic concept that conveys the idea of roundness and elegance, as well as strength and character.

Abdul Latif Jameel Corporate Headquarters anchors the northwest corner of the 21-hectare new master plan adjacent to a major traffic intersection. It first serves as a vehicle which introduces the old Jeddah to the new. Old adjacent low rise residential blocks are transitioned and connected to the future master plan. The corner of the site is outlined with an L-shaped hard edged plaster finished massing

that relates to the adjacent context while containing a softer, fluid and lighter structure within the future master plan. The L-shaped bar acts as a sound buffer while supporting the office spaces it contains. Support services are all contained within the L-bar massing, allowing adjacent offices maximum efficiency through open planning with ultimate flexibility of space.

Huanglong, literally ‘yellow dragon’, is a scenic spot in the Sichuan province known for the colourful pools formed by calcite deposits. The design drew inspirations from the natural terraced pools to give it a regional character, balance between form and function, and create an urban oasis within the vibrant city centre.

Respecting the site context, the development planned with symmetrical master layout upon the central axis of Taihu Plaza and Wuxi Museum, with the office drop-off and hotel porte-cochere on either side offering a vast open space and green landscape.

Located at Jeifangbei business district, the project creates an integral space that combines office, commerce and leisure uses. The design is inspired by the twin rivers and gorges of this beautiful, revealing Chongqing people’ traits of tenderness and determination. Such localised design with international and modern flairs blends in well with the urban planning of Chongqing and Wuyi Road.

Water Park in Nature Project Water Park Location Hong Kong, China Client Ocean Park Corporation Hong Kong Involvement Design and Project Architect Gross floor area 610,268 sq m Completion year 2017 Director Andrew Bromberg of Aedas To design a water park that stitches to Hong Kong’s beautiful natural topography is paramount to this project. Distinct from any other traditional water parks, this new Tai Shue Wan development forms an iconic environment that responds and preserves the natural landscape with a unique architectural presence, encouraging interaction and excitement year round. 18

Located in Jiefang West Road at the junction of Taiping Street and Pozi Street, the most popular destination of Changsha, Changsha Hua Center Phase II Project is adjacent to Xiang River which runs through the city’s famous icons, Orange Island and Yuelu Hill.

Inspired by Changsha's features of 'mountain, water, island and city' with the association of the unique landscape of Zhangjiajie, the UNESCO World Heritage site in Hunan province, this architecture accommodates innovative office space and a stateof-the-art shopping centre that aims to become the most cutting-edge lifestyle centre in the town. The design highlights the dual levels of retail component, a diversified vertical transportation, modern working space, office sky lobby and customised facilities in coworking space.

This office development integrates cultural and retail facilities to create an urban oasis in the city. The design concept is derived from the mountainous landscape which is interpreted as a stratified geology providing green foliage, cave, courtyard and waterfalls in the valleys. Ascending office towers are expressed as mountain peaks in powerful forms with diagonal cuts, while the rockshaped pavilions create a dynamic streetscape. The cascading façades form a folding canopy and create a mountainous contour. A series of sunken plazas are designed to draw circulation and allow natural daylight into the basement.

The new addition of express escalator

Completed in eight phases while the mall maintained in operation, the refurbishment took inspirations from the nature. Delicate touches of trees, leaves, petals, river, cloud and stars can be seen at every corner. The use of indoor greenery and natural material like timber enhances the nature feel. The new design demonstrates a harmonious mix of nature and metropolitan.

A Waving Skirt Project Nanjing Jinmao International Square Location Nanjing, China Client Nanjing International Group Co., Ltd. Involvement Design and Project Architect Gross Floor Area 122,783 sq m Completion Year 2015 Director Ken Wai 20

Nanjing Jinmao International Square is strategically located in Nanjing city centre and faces Xuanwu Lake. The architectural concept is inspired by ‘brocade’, one of the three treasures of Nanjing handicrafts. From interior to exterior, the concept shifts from ‘brocaade’ to ‘cloud’ and the consistent design language helps to create a unique

skirt facade and moire pattern. The ‘cloud’ concept is also applied to each floor and expressed in different design elements to create richness of interior space. The sunken public plaza with stepped greenery well connects with the interiors, generating people flow to the mall, and becoming a focal area for entertainment and events.

While we design a lot of massive architectural projects, that does not mean big is the only architecture we do. Often our clients need architecture of quite small scale. Last year we delivered some singular, memorable designs of small projects in China like the Yashow Sanlitun Renovation Project in Beijing. This building, designed by Director Benjamin Chan, is located at Sanlitun where is famous for its nightlife. We refurbished a decade-old building and transformed it into a world-class shopping center with modern flair. Also in Beijing is the Kuntai Wangjing Plot 2 Exhibition Centre designed by Executive Director Pierre Tong.

It is located directly adjacent to the Kuntai Jiarui Development. While wrapping up the east and south sides, the building opens up at the northwest corner where the pedestrian flow is. It consists of an exhibition area and three show flats, with both indoor and outdoor areas that give visitors a varied experience. Although the Sino EU International Exhibition Centre in Qingdao has a glass curtain wall façade, the ensemble of this centre is a long, waving ribbon. This building substitutes the conventional facade with an undulating, striated, seaweed-like ribbon. Its entrances are indicated by boldly swooping

the bottom of the ribbon up and out in a kind of porte-cochere. The wave symbolism is apt here in the port city Qingdao and we have taken references from the parallel striations found on local sea shells for the vertical ‘striations’ of the wave/ribbon. In Chengdu at Highland Park, a large scale mixed-use development, its clubhouse, designed by Global Board Director Ken Wai, is a small Y-shaped building, consisting of a swimming pool and changing rooms, a badminton/ basketball court, lounge, gym, library and children's play room. There is also a black box building which contains a cigar bar, wine store and an audiovisual studio.

The Midfield Concourse will be connected to Terminal 1 by an extension of the existing Automated People Mover system.

Dubai Tram, Dubai, UAE Designed by Aedas Singapore Team

On the new West Island Line of the Mass Transit Railway in Hong Kong, Max designed two of the three stations. Both Sai Ying Pun and HKU Stations are deep caverns with entrances, vent shafts and subways that are stitched through and integrated into the surrounding dense urban fabric. The world’s first high speed and capacity lifts make large vertical travel distance possible.

In Dubai, our Singapore team has designed 11 stations for Dubai Tram which forms an integral part of Dubai public transport system, with seamless transfer to Dubai Metro and Palm Jumeirah Monorail. Being the first fully air-conditioned tram system in the world, the design was inspired by the commonly used lightweight shading canopy in the region. The roofs form a modern and dynamic shape of an aerofoil ‘hovering’ above the platform.

Aedas Interiors is a specialist interior design company providing design consultancy services in the hospitality, residential, corporate office, retail, lifestyle and leisure markets. We are known internationally for excellence in design, documentation and timely completion of projects.

Aedas is committed to create vibrant spaces that enhance the quality of space. We believe that architecture and landscape should be complementary and that great design is a synthesis greater than the sum of its parts. The design of an open space must address a broad range of interrelated factors and, to be successful, it must express the delicate balance among function, climate, style, budget and culture.

The scale of the challenges in urban design and masterplanning has vastly increased along with the rapid global trend towards greater urbanisation. Each increasing factor of population, energy consumption, transport needs, pollution and required prosperity must be taken into account on a scale not seen before. Aedas designs places across the world that respond to these challenges. We are creating successful contemporary urban environments, with planning for the future, that are sustainable in real terms by sharing our international knowledge and through rigorous analysis by our local teams.

Aedas Arts Team leads the way in creating innovative architecture to support and facilitate the arts. We design for a broad range of clients across the arts community, tackling both new buildings and the restoration of some of the finest historic theatres — breathing new life into important and much-loved parts of the cultural heritage.

Aedas’ graphics team offers a full range of graphics design services including wayfinding signages, environmental graphics and visual identity for corporate offices, retail, hospitality, residential and lifestyle projects throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.

The company is built on the belief that great design can only be delivered by people with a deep social and cultural understanding of the communities they are designing for. Aedas global platform for creative excellence in design enables some of the world’s most talented designers to plug into the latest information and delivery systems they need to produce truly world-class design solutions. The practice's unique structure, global presence, and commitment to cuttingedge R&D are testament to our desire to deliver design excellence to clients wherever they are in the world. 26

This reputation has enabled Aedas Interiors to earn numerous repeated commissions from clients who settle for nothing but the best. We employ over 190 interior designers, with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Macau, Singapore, Dubai and London. Each office is fully computerised with the latest technologies and computer-aided draughting software.

To achieve this goal, we begin each project by thoroughly studying the needs of the client and analysing the site until we have gained a thorough appreciation of the issues and challenges.

Our projects are locationand client-specific, defined less by a signature style than by a shared imaginative approach and design ethos. We believe that inspiration and creative solutions founded in specialist knowledge lead the way to successful arts buildings.
