Cover StorySilk Mill. Whitchurch

This oil painting depicts Whitchurch Silk Mill as seen from the bridge on Winchester Street. It is one of many oil paintings of local scenes that I have had the pleasure of painting over many years. These combined with other numerous paintings from my travels means that my loft space is now rather restricted as are my sketch books! If my memory serves me correctly two paintings of the Silk Mill were done at the same time from a different view point, this other one now presumably lies buried amongst hundreds of other paintings. Both of these works were painted on canvas as were many of the older paintings, however in the last few years wood, once primed and with usually a white undercoat, has served the purpose as these can be hung frame free. Shelving has also had to be utilised in the garage to contain the overspill, which incidentally is now also full. It will surprise no one when I report that later paintings are now considerably smaller in scale (easier to store) than earlier ones. Coming from the point of view of glass half full, however, it means that there is a ready supply of paintings to change the artwork in each room. A new creative outlet I have also enjoyed is making this image, and others, available as a greeting card and in printed mug form; this as well as publishing several books (some of them even art related!) continues to keep me engaged. So stop reading this and get creative – and join me in my HAPPY DAZE! Artwork and words by Raymond Galvani

Prayer Prayer God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, That you Spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment, compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children, at risk and in fear, That you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen. Vicar’s Letter

--Revd David Roche Dear friends, The month of April is an open door to spring. April can, of course, be very mixed with hail and even snow whilst at other times we may bask in warm sunshine, and often we can experience all four seasons in one day! Day by day the polyphony of morning birdsong increases and we cannot but notice the garden waking up with fresh buds and plants. April therefore speaks of new life and new beginnings. This description of lovely, leafy Hampshire sounds rather twee in comparison to the horrifying images of the conflict in Ukraine that have filled our TV screens of late. Yet, images of desperate innocent people, families and children fleeing the war have galvanised the strong rejection of unwarranted violence in Europe, across the EU, the UK and more locally, our town. All Hallows was just one of the collection points in Whitchurch for clothing and goods to be sent to refugees. I can tell you we were overwhelmed with the positive response, clear evidence that a common humanity does exist, and people practically demonstrate that they do care deeply about others they do not know from another country and culture caught up in the evils of war. Well done Whitchurch! Life, new beginnings and hope is central to the Easter story. Christian hope is not rooted in a distant or romantic past, remembering a one off event two thousand years ago. Easter faith is prophetically grounded in the here and now, in light overcoming darkness. The death and resurrection of Jesus spans across time and space and speaks to us today. There are many destructive forces at play in our world that speak fear and pain into our broken humanity. Into all these situations Christ’s ‘Passion’ points to transformed and transfigured life, Easter life. Jesus was no stranger to suffering and humiliation, and if we look hard enough, we will see he is there walking with us in our own troubles. With the dawning of Easter Day we are offered a new life with God and God calls us to share his peace with the world. We continue to hold the people of Ukraine and indeed other places of conflict across our world in prayer as we strive for peace.

Parish Registers Funerals: The funeral of Colin Vickers of Whitchurch at All Hallows on 11 Feb 2022 The funeral of Rosemary Joan Corney of Whitchurch at All Hallows on 1 March 2022 The funeral of George Powell of Whitchurch at All Hallows on 7 March 2022 May they rest in peace Rest in Peace Families are welcome and encouraged to provide brief biographical details of those with local connections who have died recently. We extend sympathy to the family and friends of George Powell (23 August 1938 – 6 February 2022) George was born in Bilsthorpe Notts and grew up in New Ollerton a village close by. It was during his National Service at the Hurstbourne camp that he shot at Bisley as a marksman and also met his future wife June who lived in Whitchurch; they were married for 63 years. When his National Service ended George and June returned to New Ollerton where he worked at the colliery dealing with the waste material from the coal mining operation. In 1967 George and his family returned to Whitchurch where he worked at Croydex in Andover for a few years, and then at AWRE Aldermaston until his retirement. June and George were proud parents of Lesley, Martin and Robin together with nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was a keen sportsman having participated in football, cricket, table tennis, darts and bowls. Bowls was a big part in his life which he enjoyed playing for well over 45 years having made many good friends and acquaintances during that time. He also enjoyed watercolour painting for which he had a talent that started and grew from an early age when he attended an art school in Nottingham. George’s friendly, likeable manner and his sense of humour will be missed by all. The family would like to thank everybody for their support and kind wishes at this difficult time. Brian John Sharp Brian lived in Whitchurch all his life. He was born in Laundry Yard and moved to Firsway with his family at the age of 8. He continued to live there after his 5

marriage to Heather in 1960 and it was there that his five children grew up. Brian worked In the Mould Office at Portals for many years but had to take early retirement after being diagnosed with M.S. in his early 50s. He will probably be remembered for his life long association with The Salvation Army. He was a uniformed member of the Whitchurch Corps and held many responsibilities including 25 years as the Bandmaster. In 1990 when Whitchurch celebrated 'Liberty at Whitchurch' (100th anniversary of the Salvation Army disturbances) Brian proudly carried the flag at the front of the massed bands as they marched from the town square to The Lawns where Lord Denning recognised the place in history that the Whitchurch Salvation Army held. Sadly some years later Whitchurch Salvation Army closed but Brian continued his membership at Basingstoke, still playing in the band and singing in the choir. Brian and Heather celebrated their Golden Wedding in April 2010 but sadly five months later Heather died following a stroke. Brian continued to be fiercely independent until early 2021 when the M.S. began to affect his mobility. He moved to Wessex Lodge Nursing Home where he could receive the 24/7 care that he needed. At the beginning of December 2021 Brian was diagnosed with cancer. Although the prognosis was not good Brian was determined to be around for Christmas to be able to hear The Salvation Army band playing carols once more on Christmas Eve, something that he had done himself for over 50 years and although very ill by then, he achieved this. The Basingstoke Crematorium was full to overflowing for Brian's committal service and following this, his life was celebrated in a Thanksgiving service at The Basingstoke Salvation Army. Nearly £1000 has been donated for the M.S. Society and the Basingstoke Salvation Army in memory of Brian. Although at peace now, he will be missed by many people including his five children, Sue, Chris, Alan, Debbie and Graham, his eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Whitchurch CofE Primary School Spring is just round the corner and once we have enjoyed our Easter holidays we will be getting to grips with our Summer Topics. We are hoping for some good weather as everyone has outdoor learning as part of their curriculum. We are so lucky in Whitchurch to have such a wealth of resources on our door-step. Year 1 have Ugly Bug Ball as their topic title which allows for time to go minibeast hunting. Year 2 will be visiting the sea side as they learn about animals that live at the sea shore. Year 3 will be studying Whitchurch life which includes going into the town and conducting surveys. Year 4 have the title, ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ which of course means a river study. Year 5 will be looking at how animals adapt to their surroundings. This is continued in Year 6 where the children study evolution. Our reception children spend about half their day outside normally and will be planting seeds to grow their own vegetables. Our topic work always includes some interesting stories. Some are classics like ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch” which Year 2 will be enjoying and others are more modern like ‘Cat Burglar’ by Tamsin Cooke which Year 3 will be studying. Of course, as the weather improves we will increase the amount of PE outside ready for Sports Day. Let’s hope we can invite our families this year! -- Kate Steven, Head Teacher Fabric and Craft Sale Whether you want to sell or buy Patchwork, dressmaking textiles and notions knitting, embroidery or craft supplies patterns and craft books Where: All Hallows Church, Church Street, Whitchurch, Hants RG28 7AS When: Saturday 9th April, 10am to 4pm Trader: Janet’s Fabrics will be there with fabrics, embroidery, dressmaking, bag making notions To book a sales table or for more details Contact: Beverly Vaughan [email protected] - 07788 417091 7

Testbourne Community School

After a very wet and windy February, we are thankful to be entering March with a spring in our step. We have had a very fun and enthusiastic World Book Day 2022 that had our staff dress up as iconic characters from their favourite books! Throughout the day, we celebrated reading by engaging in WBD activities; read extracts from some cherished, childhood books; held a ‘toilet-roll character’ competition; and distributed book tokens. Reading is very important for cognitive ability and information processing, so we encourage everyone to pick up a book and go on a journey! Photos of our staff can be found on our social media websites: Facebook and Instagram. We also took part in the Shakespeare School Festival 2022! The students involved all auditioned for their parts and were committed to rehearse during their break times and after school. We at Testbourne, and especially our drama teachers, are proud of the dedication our students demonstrated throughout their rehearsals. On March 8th, those students took to the stage at The Lights Theatre in Andover to perform live in front of an audience (which, for many of our students, was the first time they performed to a large crowd). They put on an enthusiastic and professional performance! We congratulate them for their hard work, diligence, and integrity. Photos of the performance can be found on our social media websites: Facebook and Instagram. Finally, at the time of writing, we expect that our New Intake Welcome Packages have arrived with some excited Year 6 students who applied for a place at Testbourne for September 2022. We look forward to welcoming these eager and enthusiastic individuals to join our school, as well as playing our part in their educational journey. Contact: 892061 – [email protected] -- Jon Beck, Headmaster The weather for February at Papermill Farm We saw ten days of rain, totalling 81mm (3.18ins) of rain in February. This makes the total for 2022 110mm (4.33ins). For the same time last year it was 210mm (8.26ins), just showing what a dry winter we have had. The warmest day was 22 February at 15C (59F), the coldest was the 25th with -3C (26F). 8

Whitchurch Silk Mill Public Recognition for Christine Beresford We’re proud and excited to report that our retiring Chair of Whitchurch Silk Mill Trust was presented with an MBE by HRH The Prince of Wales at a recent investiture at Windsor Castle. Christine was awarded this honour for services to cultural heritage in Hampshire. In the last 20 years she has worked tirelessly with the county’s museums to help them raise standards of conservation, presentation, management and governance. We’re extremely lucky to have had her as a Trustee of the Mill since 2013 and to have benefited from her skills in very many ways, but particularly in launching our major refurbishment project and bringing it to a successful conclusion, making the Mill a vibrant attraction preserving the craft of silk weaving. New in the Mill Shop New into our shop are beautiful striped scarves made from spun silk on our looms: the definition of ‘made in Whitchurch’! These scarves are based on an archive pattern, brought to life again by our weavers in contemporary tonal blues with hints of pink, and are available in both twill and hopsack, a rare weave for us. Pins & Needles This year our popular Pins & Needles adult crafting sessions are on the first Thursday of each month. Tickets £10, including tuition, all materials and a hot drink. Participants enjoy the company of like-minded people learning new skills or honing existing ones. Past sessions have included silk painting, embroidery and silk bead-wrapping. Booking is essential as numbers are limited. Exhibition: Works in Silk, 2 April–3 July This is silk ribbon weaver Robert Ely’s first solo gallery exhibition outside his home county of Devon and brings together weaving from all areas of his work, including stunning one-off and limited-edition wall panels and silk costume ribbons used for film and television including the BBC’s ‘Poldark’ series. Easter Holiday Activities • Wild and Wonderful Family Day, 21 April from 10.30am. There will be free entry to this event on the Mill’s lawn. The Mill Team will be joined by local nature and animal charities, including small animal rescue Furlock Holmes bringing along some furry friends. • Other Easter holiday activities include an Egg Hunt around the Mill and gardens, and kids will be able to hide and play in the newly planted willow den. Check our website for details and dates. • Budding young photographers are invited to join Wildlife Photography Workshops. Places need to be booked in advance at whitchurchsilkmill.org.uk/events/.

Whitchurch Cricket Club As the minds of the cricketers of Whitchurch turn to a new season which hopefully will not be curtailed like the last few seasons. The wickets has been mowed and rolled by Martyn and it looks a picture, although still very wet. On the playing side, WCC has retained their position in Division 4 North in the Hampshire Cricket League. There have been a number of new players who have joined in the winter nets at Dummer. One or two old players have moved on mostly to a higher league. One of the biggest changes will be in the North Hants Midweek Cricket League which WCC have played in for a number of years. NHMCL have become a part of a wider Hampshire Slam which enables successful clubs to progress to a final at the Rose Bowl. The games are still 20 over each and each team can choose a logo coloured kit. The Youth section of WCC run by Chris Judge and his team have proposed a number of teams for this season, they are • All Stars (ECB) 5-8 years run by Jonny Foxbatt 6 sessions from Friday 6th May (the 30 places allocated for these sessions have already been filled) • Mini Wolverines U7 No competitive games • U9 Pairs cricket played with a soft ball. Competitive games in the Warrior league. • 2 teams U11 playing with hard ball. Competitive games in the Warrior league. If you would like to find out more about these teams and the session please contact [email protected]. In the February edition of the magazine I wrote about an unusual cricket match which was mentioned in the Whitchurch Historical Society facebook page concerning a match played in 1849 at Laverstoke Park at the home of the Portals family. The match was between the Allotments Holders of Whitchurch and Overton. From the same source another unusual match was held between the Primitive Methodist and Independence verses the Baptist and Wesleyans Methodist July 1881 The Festival of the United Sunday Schools was held on Wednesday, when children to the number of 400 were present. The tea, which was to have been 15

held in a meadow in Newbury-street (lent by Mr. G. L. Hanks), was, on account of the weather, prepared in a large barn which Mr. Weeks placed at the service of the committee. The St. Mary Bourne brass band was present. After a most beautiful tea a procession was formed and, headed by the band, marched to Hurstbourne Park, where cricket, racing and other rustic sports, were engaged in. A single innings cricket match was arranged between 12 of the Wesleyans and Baptists against 12 of the Primitive Methodists and Independents, the former whom were the victors, the scores being 72 and 26. Shortly after eight o’clock the procession was reformed, and, headed by the band, returned to the town corner, where a vote thanks and three cheers were given for the Earl of Portsmouth. Thanks are due to the several ministers and teachers and also to the secretary, Mr. C. Barnett, for his services. Rising Fives The children enjoyed World Book Day at the beginning of March and took part in many exciting activities designed to promote reading for pleasure. The children enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters. They built houses for the 3 little pigs, made gingerbread men out of ginger flavoured playdough, investigated Goldilocks themed oats sensory play, Tiddler underwater adventure play and explored our interactive story sacks. We also had fun celebrating pancake day. The children had lots of fun pretending to make and flip their own pancakes in the home corner! We were thrilled and very grateful to receive a generous grant from Councillor Colin Phillimore recently. We have been able to use this to further enhance our home role play area which is enjoyed by all the children. We have purchased some wonderful resources, including a children’s wooden table and chair set. As a charity run Preschool, we are always so thankful for support towards our fundraising events. We will be hosting a family Easter event on Saturday 9th April 10-12pm at Rising Fives which will include a fun Easter trail. Do come and join us, everyone is welcome. Are you starting to think about a preschool for your child? We have spaces available, from September, for children aged 2 and upwards. We have been established in Whitchurch for over 40 years and have a very experienced and qualified team who create a wonderfully supportive setting for interactive play, learning and development. For further information please contact us using the details below.

Parish Hall Movies in the Parish Hall The next movie on Wednesday 13th April is KING RICHARD featuring Will Smith in his BAFTA winning performance as Best Actor KING RICHARD 12A Drama/Biography 138mins With Will Smith, Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton Based on the inspiring true story, King Richard follows the journey of Richard Williams, a determined father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time. Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard (Will Smith) has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons. The profoundly moving film shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world. From the official website “If Smith's performance can feel affected, there's complexity to his portrayal of a tired yet determined man who is obstinate and self-deceiving but has the best of intentions. Some of Richard's more troubling flaws are brushed over in this oftensunny spin on events, though his motivations are well fleshed out.” Radio Times Watch the trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhERVJTmGBM The film starts at 7.30pm (Doors open at 7.00pm) Admission £5.00 at the Door.Soft Drinks and Wine Ba Contact: 07787 056580 – [email protected] – www.whitchurchparishhall.co.uk --Rod Clarke Whitchurch History Society This month's talk for the History Society will be ‘The Queen's Bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard’ which seemed appropriate in the Queen's Platinum Year. Whitchurch WI The February Gardeners’ Question Time was very informative and greatly appreciated, and as one WI member said it inspired her to be more brave with her gardening. In April, the WI has an additional treat on Thursday 7 April with a Murder Mystery Evening, 7pm at the Gill Nethercott Centre. Whodunit? Why not become a member, join in the fun and find out? The next regular monthly meeting is on Thursday 21 April, 7.15pm at the GNC, when there will be a visit from Lowland Rescue, volunteers who work alongside Mountains Rescue and the RNLI, providing lifesaving search and rescue coverage. As well as regular monthly meetings, the WI holds regular daytime ‘coffee and chat’ sessions and lunches; recent ones have been in the White Hart but also the occasional Zoom coffee meeting takes place for those more comfortable with that. WI book group and knitting group are also thriving. Get in touch for details. ‘Flow before you go’! Please note that if you intend to go to WI meetings you need to have done a negative Covid test beforehand, wear PPE … and don’t attend if you have any Covid symptoms. Contact: Judy Hopkins (Secretary) – 892286 - [email protected] Where in Whitchurch? Where in Whitchurch would you see this photo on the left? This monthly quiz shows photos of items around the town; sometimes they are cropped or taken close up but they are always easily visible from public pathways. Look out in the May edition of the parish magazine for the answer. Last month’s photo was of the lovely stained-glass window above the entrance to the old Chapel building in London Street, home to the industrial design company 3fD who so brilliantly renovated the oncederelict building. If you look closely when you walk past, you can see these words on the window which are perhaps more poignant than ever: One Planet, One Nation. 20
