Bose Krishnamachari’s installation Ghost/Transmemoiranimates the concept of montage on a grand scale that reflects the city in flux and serves in many ways as the centerpiece for the exhibition. http://www.artslant.com/ind/articles/show/28188
In bright red shoes, sequined black tee, designer tangerine eyewear, artist Bose Krishnamachari is as colourful as his striking work, ‘Stretched Bodies'. Listed in GQ's (Gentlemen's Quarterly) 50 best dressed men in India, (June 2010 issue), Bose is sartorially glamorous but that's digressing from his main achievements. He is in the vanguard of the renaissance of contemporary Indian art Doing portraits in five minutes at an upmarket restaurant ‘Mela' in South Mumbai was his first job and living in a ‘chawl' (community housing) with 12 other ‘migrants' in this dream city was perhaps the biggest learning lesson in his life. “Contemporary art has no rules. All art is illegal because if one follows the rules then you are doing commissioned work or plainly mimicking. To be different one has to break the rules,” “You have to look at each work in its historical perspective, especially if you are a collector. Some of Goya's works are visually disturbing but they are historically important and absolutely fantastic art pieces. Art need not be visually appealing. It can be ugly. Its history is imperative.” http://www.thehindu.com/features/friday-review/art/in-primarycolours/article452905.ece
Krishnamachari works in striking and dynamic abstracts, and with figures seen through saturated lenses. Even in his photography and multi-media installations, color is a dominant force. He says, "I refine my color to brightness. I have learnt this usage from the alternately
subdued and lavish color codes of Indian ceremonies and ritual performances; the costumes, the gestures of enactment..." http://www.aicongallery.com/artists/bose-krishnamachari/bio/
One of the more evocative installations was Bose Krishnamachari’s “Ghost/Transmemoir”, featuring over a 100 used tiffin containers, each with its own LCD screen screening interviews with a diverse cross-section of Bombay society. While it brought a very immediate and local sensibility, the installation touched on broader geopolitical issues of global and internal migration and urbanization. http://www.artitute.com/2012/01/17/art-stage-a-collectors-paradise/
Transformation is something Bose equates with the city that nurtured his dreams and forever changed his life. Not many know that he was a sickly child who had to be hospitalised due to a blood condition that left him semi-comatose. When he recovered, he came to Mumbai on a whim and a prayer to become an artist – but the authorities at the JJ School of Art refused him admission. He persisted and succeeded in studying fine art at the institution that initially acknowledged his genius with gold medals and even appointed him to teach there while working on his MFA – only to rusticate him for questioning their methods; yet the rebel with a cause cheerfully took it all in his stride. http://www.verveonline.com/63/people/bose.shtml
