Teaching Input • Tell the children that today they are going to find out how to make moving pictures using a sliding mechanism. How do you think a sliding mechanism might work? Think, pair, then share your ideas. • On the next slide, show the children a simple picture that uses a sliding mechanism. Encourage children to explain how the snail can be made to move. • Show them the equipment that was used to make the moving picture, and challenge them to explain how it was made. Use the following slides to show step-by-step instructions of how the moving picture was created. • Explain that the slot can be cut anywhere on the background scene. What other moving pictures could we create using the minibeast theme? Think, pair, then share your ideas. • Use the following slide to tell the children that they can also use a sliding mechanism to make pictures appear and disappear. What minibeast do you think is hiding behind this pile of soil? Reveal the answer on the next slide, and ask the children to talk to a partner about how they think this moving picture was made. • As before, show them the equipment that was used to make the moving picture, and challenge them to explain how it was made. Use the following slides to show how the moving picture was created, ensuring that children understand not to stick any tape over the area where the minibeast will appear from/ disappear into, and why.
Main Activity Teacher Note: you may wish to photocopy the Background Scenes and Minibeast Pictures onto card to make them sturdier. Lower ability: Middle ability: Higher ability: As a group and with adult support, children cut along the marked slots on Background Scenes 1A and cut out Minibeast Pictures 1A. They then explore all of the different moving pictures they can make. Teacher note: a strip of card could be stuck to the front of the Background Scenes, secured at either end, instead of cutting a slot.
In pairs, children cut along the marked slots on Background Scenes 1A, and cut out Minibeast Pictures 1B. They then explore all of the different moving pictures they can make, discussing and deciding on the length of the handle they will need to make for each one, and what angle to attach it to the picture.
In pairs, give children Background Scenes 1B and Moving Pictures 1B. They are challenged to make as many different moving pictures as they can. They need to decide on the location and length of their slots in relation to the images they are using in each moving picture. They will also need to decide on the length of the handles needed, and what angle to attach it to the picture.
Fancy something different…? • In mixed ability groups of four, give children Challenge Packs A,B,C and D. Ask them to work together to assemble these pieces to make a minibeast appear or disappear according to the instructions.

1. Draw a straight line on the background scene to show where you want the snail to move from and to.

2. Use scissors to carefully cut along the line you have drawn to create a slot.

3. Stick the snail onto the top of the strip of card with glue.

4. Push the strip of card through the slot you cut. Pull the strip down until the snail is sitting on the line.

5. Pull the strip of card (the handle) to the right to move the snail.

TOP TIP! For a handle at the front, cut another slot underneath the first one, and pull the strip of card through this too. www.planbee.com

Make the moving picture following the same instructions for the snail.
Stick the picture of the soil over the worm, securing it in place with tape.
TOP TIP! Don't stick any tape over the area where the minibeast will appear from/disappear into.
