Children's Champions 2022 Helping Children & Families Thrive
Be a Champion for Children in Need Children’s Champions donors who give $5,000 or more will be showcased on the Donor Tree in the new Saint Teresa of Calcutta Villa’s Joan and Irwin Jacobs Family Courtyard and Playground, and will serve as an inspiration to children and families for years to come. Designed and fabricated by accomplished designer, Joowan Lee, the Donor Tree and its vivid colors serve as a reminder to families living in Saint
Teresa of Calcutta Villa that they are not alone in their journey out of homelessness. Each year, the Donor Tree will grow with new Recognition Leaves honoring gifts of $5,000 or more toward Father Joe’s Villages’ programs for children and families. Most importantly, with each gift you will be giving children in need the best opportunities possible to build sound futures as adults.

2021 Outcomes The Therapeutic Childcare Center is dedicated to preparing children experiencing homelessness for success by integrating services that address their behavioral, developmental, and academic needs, plus education and resources for parents.
Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness Homelessness leaves lasting trauma that often interferes with children becoming confident, successful adults. Without somewhere safe to lay their heads at the end of the day, children who are homeless often find themselves with fears no child should ever have to realize: fear of being hungry and cold, fear of being harmed, fear of being alone. A healthy environment, nourishing food, and love and support are critical for a child’s brain development. Without those things, children are more likely to fall behind in their physical, emotional, and behavioral development. Child Development Specialists in our licensed Therapeutic Childcare Center work to end the cycle of homelessness through caring support and integrated services that address behavioral, developmental, and academic needs of children and teens experiencing homelessness, all in one location. Father Joe’s Villages Therapeutic Childcare Center, funded primarily by private philanthropy, offers a range of unique and proven interventions to families in need. The outcomes of our innovative model demonstrate that Therapeutic Childcare truly helps to build brighter futures and stronger families. X Children & Families Served Father Joe's Villages served more than 450 families and over 900 children in 2021.
Keeping Programs Strong Together, the staff of Therapeutic Childcare, including Behavioral Health Clinicians and Child Development Specialists, help children achieve developmental milestones, practice healthy socialization, ensure physical wellness and complete nutrition, and so much more. Your donations will ensure that children and families thrive, by providing: X Expert Staffing Salaries for six Child Development Specialists and a Supervisor, who are essential to serving more children and parents this year. X Improving Literacy Family Literacy programs that teach literacy strategies essential for later academic pursuits. X Supporting Education After school enrichment programs, including educational and recreational activities for school-aged children. X Strengthening Families Parenting Support programs, including parenting education, guided parent-child activities, parent conferences and clinical therapy. Classes teach parents about child development, attachment, safety and wellbeing.
X Services Provided in 2021 Over 24,000 services to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children and teens. X Improved Early Literacy Skills 100% of preschool children improved early literacy skills critical to kindergarten readiness. X Parenting and Family Unity 100% of families served reported that they are "more supportive family units" through participation in parenting and family unity classes.
Patrick's Story Patrick always worked extra hard to support his family. However, after being let go from his job as a Lead Electronic Assembly Specialist, Patrick and his family ended up losing their home. Initially, Patrick, his fiancé, and their five children lived out of their car. After the car was repossessed, they were forced to live on the streets. “That’s the worst memory—worrying about if somebody is going to come by and do something to my kids, and the kids being all cold on the sidewalk.” After that particular night, Patrick and his family moved into the Family Living Center at Father Joe’s Villages, where he enrolled his three youngest children into the Father Joe’s Villages Therapeutic Childcare Center. Patrick’s 4-year-old son began exhibiting behavioral problems and anger issues. His son would not communicate with other kids and exhibited some violent displays of aggression against teachers. Fortunately, the professional team of Child Development Specialists and Mental Health Clinicians in the Therapeutic Childcare Center stepped in to help. Patrick’s son was able to receive support and treatment to ensure he developed healthy coping mechanisms and behaviors. Patrick’s son was given the communication skills he needed to effectively express himself. “We’ve seen such a difference in his behavior. I am so proud of him,” Patrick said. Additionally, secure childcare allowed Patrick and his fiance to focus their time on finding stable work and securing their new home. A gift to Children’s Champions ensures that we can continue providing programs serving children and families like Patrick’s.
