Ms. Patricia Swindle, M.Ed., M.A.
Student Speaker, Tiffany Hardy, is a native Arizonan who currently resides in Litchfield Park, AZ. She works as a Patient Care Assistant at Banner Del Webb. Ms. Hardy attended Westfield High School and has earned an Associate in Arts and AGEC-A from Estrella Mountain Community College. Ms. Hardy is a proud member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and is graduating with High Distinction. Ms. Hardy will earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree as part of the concurrent enrollment program with Grand Canyon University.
Ms. Patty Swindle has been a Faculty member since 1998 at Estrella Mountain Community College and has taught over 4,000 students during her teaching career.
Ms. Hardy acknowledges the role family support has played in her success. “My 7-year-old daughter is my main motivation, my reason for living. She resembles every little piece of me from my head to my toes. I would not be where I am without the love and continued support of my family and friends. Thank you to my siblings for your encouragement. Big thank you, Mom, for the woman you and Dad raised me to be – may you continue to rest in peace.”

She is a member of the Instructional Computing Division where her teaching focus is primarily Cisco and Microsoft courses in the Networking Technology Institute. Ms. Swindle has served in various leadership roles with her most recent as the Estrella Mountain Community College Faculty Senate President. She holds a Master’s in Education from the University of Phoenix and a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Arizona. Before Estrella Mountain, Ms. Swindle taught at Gilbert High School and has loved every year of teaching since she became an educator years ago.

Ceremonial Mace
Congratulations, Estrella Mountain Community College Class of 2021! You have achieved a tremendous educational milestone, Mountain Lions, and you are the pride of our college!
The College’s ceremonial mace is usually carried by the Faculty Senate President as a part of traditional graduation ceremonies. It is incorporated into the academic processional to signify the dignity and academic excellence of Estrella Mountain. Handcrafted with cherry wood and bronze metal, the medallion depicts Estrella Mountain’s open hallways and repeating arches, symbolizing the new and infinite opportunities made possible by the welcoming environment students encounter as they embark on their journey to success.
Today’s commencement signifies the completion of one journey and the beginning of a new goal. As we reflect on events that lead us to this milestone, it is important to consider what promise initiated this journey. Can you remember the moment in time or a particular event, which prompted your journey at Estrella Mountain? As we celebrate and appreciate accomplishments, consider both the challenging times, the moments of joy, and the communities of support, culminating in your success at this moment. Challenging times are nothing new to us. Our ancestors survived much more with far fewer technological advances to ease the burden of their plight. Nevertheless, they were resilient. And every challenge we now face reminds us that the same resiliency lives within us. It is their gift to us. Estrella Mountain’s class of 2021 has persevered despite the perfect storm of calamities. Your survival has made you stronger. As you go into the world in pursuit of your dreams, remember you stand on the shoulders of giants who did not break, who did not give up, and who survived. You can pay homage to them by leveraging the precious gifts they bestowed upon you and by thriving! In one of his last public addresses, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” Go forward with hope, share your experiences with others, and infuse a growth mindset into all your future endeavors. History of Academic Regalia The origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries when universities were taking form. The ordinary dress of the scholar, whether student or teacher, was the dress of a cleric. With few exceptions, the medieval scholar had taken at least minor orders, made certain vows, and perhaps been tonsured. Long gowns were worn and may have been necessary for warmth in unheated buildings. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap. In 1893, an intercollegiate commission established a uniform code for caps, gowns, and hoods for the various degrees. Black tassels are correct for all degrees, and colored tassels are worn only by preference. The doctor’s cap and presidents of universities or colleges may have tassels of gold thread. The tassel should be worn draped over the left front quarter of the cap. The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed; the master’s and doctor’s may be worn open or closed. The shape of the sleeve is the distinguishing mark of the gowns: bachelor, long pointed sleeves; master, oblong sleeves open at the wrist; doctor, bell-shaped with three velvet bars on each sleeve. Of the regalia’s three components, the hood is the most interesting. Originally, it had three uses: as a head covering, as a shoulder cape, and as a bag in which alms could be collected. It is mentioned as early as 1480 in clerical literature. When large wigs were in vogue in Britain, the cape part of the hood was split in front and a narrow neckband inserted. The entire cape and hood was allowed to fall back as it is today, and it was never restored to the original style. The hoods are lined with the color of the institution, which awarded the degree to the wearer. The color of the border or collar of the hood designates the degree. Above is a list of the hood and tassel colors established by the Intercollegiate Code to represent departments of learning.
