Towards increased creativity and quality

The convention gathered more than 39 subsidiary companies  of  DRBHICOM  and  witnessed ten finalist teams showcased their improvement projects on stage and another 10 teams through booth exhibits.

Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal then called upon all sectoral and company leaders to sufficiently engage in monitoring and reviewing their respective projects and ensure that the Steering Committees of HCDP at sectoral and company levels are setup for the purpose. Companies which have yet to participate in the programme are urged to select strategic improvement projects and register with Group HICOM Management System (HMS) accordingly.

he 2016 DRB-HICOM Innovative Creative Circle (ICC) / Quality Improvement  Team  (QIT) Convention was recently held at Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur  Glenmarie  on 16 April 2016.

With the objective to drive continuous improvement initiatives across DRB-HICOM Group accompanied by the elevation of employees’ skill and morale. The Group Managing Director, Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal  Albar  made his presence strongly felt in the event through his opening speech that stressed the importance of continuous improvement to cater the changing business landscape.

Recognising the importance of placing the strategic improvement projects execution on the radar, he continued by announcing HCDP is to replace QIT for future Conventions. Heartiest congratulations to the following ICC, QIT and HCDP winners on their welldeserved awards:

Quality Improvement Team (QIT) Champion : Composites Technology Research (M) Sdn Bhd (Team In-Tempo)

“Nowadays, customers demand for lower selling price despite the rising cost of doing business. Most businesses are under pressure to increase their sales and profitability. We cannot do business the same way, but we must do it in a way that is Better, Cheaper and Faster”, he said.  The stark difference between this Convention and those in the past was the introduction of a strategic improvement programme for executives, coined HMS Capability Development Programme (HCDP). It adopts a “top-down” deployment approach as the improvement projects being taken up are strategic for the companies, unlike ICC projects which are typically “bottom up” initiatives as they are autonomously run by nonexecutive teams. 18

evolution

W

hen I first heard that Jeep’s Grand Cherokee was picked as the “Premium SUV of the Year” at last year’s illustrious New Straits TimesMaybank Car of the Year Awards, I knew I had to get my hands on it.

Running surprisingly quiet on two pairs of 20-inch polished wheels, the car emerged sleeker than its stable mates with a smoothededged silhouette, aerodynamic spoiler and modern front grille, although the front Bi-xenon headlamps and projector fog lamps could do with a tad more bulk.

After all, in the rapidly popular SUV arena occupied by more accustomed European brands as well as the fast growing Asian marques, to hear that this lesser known American car maker had topped its counterparts was indeed an eye-opener. Let’s start off stating what would undeniably be on almost everyone’s mind when they first hear of its price tag: “At RM439,000 (on-theroad price including insurance for the Grand Cherokee Overland), it’s rather steep.” I admit that my first impression of its unpretentious exterior and under-fitted interior did not help to ease the apprehension of this premium-class sports utility vehicle. Like many, I had hinged my expectations on its price tag and was guilty of focusing on what I did not see rather than what it could deliver. Yet indeed, deliver this baby did, and in truly grand fashion!

However, as said, this is one ride that has all its secret weapons beneath the shell. As I zipped across the North-South Expressway from Kuala Lumpur to Penang in the dark and in the torrential rain, the car’s intense fog lamps and adaptive automatic concentrated headlamps, which self-adjust up to 15 degrees to illuminate the road around corners, were a delight. conditions, Jeep seemed to have got this right with the Grand Cherokee as it serves up smooth manual shifting usability when quick acceleration is required.

Pumped by an energetic 3.6 litre V6 heart, which delivers 284hp at 6,350 rpm and 347Nm at 4,300rpm, the Grand Cherokee Overland comes out as a genuine American thoroughbred. But it is the effortless 8-speed automatic transmission that allows the driver to truly appreciate the near perfect synergy of performance and handling. Unlike some of its more prevalent peers that seems to struggle in adjusting their paddle-shift transmission’s ratio to seamlessly fit Malaysian driving 48

49

EVOLUTION

It is the informative and meticulous full-colour leathertrimmed instrument panel that kept my fingers busy for extended periods throughout my time behind the wheels. The customisable 7-inch multiview TFT display allows you to view the car’s GPS navigation system, access the entertainment channels, monitor vehicle performance, check your tire pressure, choose the five available traction control system and more importantly, receive visual notifications of safety applications. Housed within the user-friendly 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia unit is a comprehensive navigation system tagged with one-step voice destination entry and high-definition nine-speaker audio system and USB/SD slots. Passengers will have no problems with connectivity via the standard iPod mobile device integration and hands-free Bluetooth connectivity and voice command.

The designer’s attention to details is what sets the Grand Cherokee apart. Exceptionally spacious for up to five passengers, its premiumquality soft Nappa leather trimmed seats stays comfortable in both hot and cold weather conditions. If that’s not lux enough for you, then the combo of heated/ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and heated steering wheel - yes you read it right – will surely do the trick. For a touch of “awesomeness”, the car is fitted with an automatic air suspension system that features five vehicle height settings that enables a clearance up to a maximum of 24.7cm higher, as well as automatically lowers the car when speed exceeds 88 km/h, thus increasing vehicle stability.

Keeping you safe There are over 70 safety and security features with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, including: • Advanced, multistage driver and front-passenger airbags • Supplemental side-curtain airbags • Side guard door beams • Front park assist • Rear back up camera and rear park assist • Hill start assist • Electronic stability control • Electronic roll mitigation • Anti-lock brake system • Brake assist • All-speed traction control

Oh, amid all these impressive gizmos and features, did I forget to mention that the Jeep Grand Cherokee comes standard with push start button, keyless entry and my personal favourite, a stretched.

For a family trip with the kid’s plethora of provisions and toys, my overflowing golf set, our luggage and not forgetting the missus’ heaps of snacks and dietary needs, the rear cargo area, which provides up to 1,943 litres of storage, was a joy to have. It is no slouch either when it comes to towing as it has a capacity to tow up to 3,267kg of practically anything you want.

Lombok, where white sand, virgin islands, untouched corals and broken toe awaits By: Khazrul Fariq

I

f you’re planning your next vacation and looking to travel to a beautiful island in Indonesia, you may want to consider Lombok as your next holiday destination. Oblivious to many tourists who prefer vacationing in Bali, the neighbouring island is equally packed with plenty of exciting activities, breath-taking waterfalls, gorgeous undisturbed beaches and is more peaceful and private! My wife and of travelling the getaway a memorable reasons! Well ones too.

I had the privilege there in April and proved to be quite one for all the right maybe a few wrong

The day finally arrived and we found ourselves in Senggigi, a popular tourist destination known for its nocturnal pubs and restaurants. The stretch along the west coast of Lombok would probably be buzzing with boisterous chants, laughter and live music had it been later at night but we arrived early in the evening and the hotspot appeared to be quieter than usual as bright street lights started illuminating the road. We arrived at Imaj Private Villas around 8pm and to our surprise, the management upgraded our one bedroom suite to a whole bungalow equipped with a private swimming pool all to ourselves! The night couldn’t have been better. We retired early for the day, excitedly looking forward to what awaits us over the next few days.

Prior to the trip, we did a bit of homework on Lombok and managed to secure some very good accommodation and transportation deals, albeit it being quite a last minute arrangement. All our accommodation arrangements were done through AirBnB and Agoda whereas road transportation via a contact my wife received from her friend. So all that was left to do was pack and wait for the big day.

LIFESTYLE

The following day brought forth a trekking adventure through the foot of Mount Rinjani to witness Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile, two mesmerisingly beautiful waterfalls. The water at Tiu Kelep flows down 50 metres to provide a truly stunning view while the crystal clear ice cold water delivered a refreshing and revitalising sensation that made the one hour guided trek completely worthwhile. Situated on the west coast of Lombok are three small gilis (islands), which paved the way for an island hopping itinerary for us over the next few days. We started off by setting camp in Gili Air and exploring the smallest island on Day 1 and then moved on to the remaining larger islands, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. As with most island hopping packages, ours included the opportunity to go snorkelling at a few spots where we witnessed untouched corals and a variety of colourful sea creatures. It was an incredible experience that actually left us in sadness as we came to realise that the following day will be our last in Lombok. We headed straight to Kuta Lombok on the morning of our last day and without wasting any time, made a mad dash to Mawun beach for its hypnotising white sand and Selong Belanak bay, a paradise for those considering taking up surfing lessons. Unfortunately for us, we met with a scooter accident on the way back to our villa but thankfully there were no major injuries, unless a dislocated toe is considered one. So sadly enough, that was the highlight of the day as we were left confined within the walls of our bedroom for the rest of the day. Nonetheless, our getaway to Lombok was indeed a memorable one in its entirety; a treasured experience that will be in our memories for years to come. Given the chance, we would love to make another trip there.

Solat Si Cilik edisi DRB-HICOM

S

I

f this is anything similar to a Christmas wish list then, my Raya wish for the office based on my year-long good behaviour (ahem) is for an Anti-Stress Area to destress. The name is self-explanatory but the concept is a mix of game and relaxation areas of the likes of Google and Facebook offices’ around the world. I would very much like to have the options to either play Pacman arcade game console or challenge my colleagues to a “friendly” game of Call of Duty on the Xbox 360 or a game of Foosball or get quick shuteye in one of the “sleeping pods” or hammocks to defuse oneself. Long hours spent at the office wouldn’t be as sore if such areas exist in our midst to compensate it. It’s a win-win situation for the company and the employees as ideas would often time come pouring after a break or a short nap apart from feeling refreshed and reenergized. Many studies have shown improvement in cognitive function, creative thinking and memory performance after a nap and that playing games could both be therapeutic and sharpen the mind. The basis is simple and that would be balance, as I see it and balance is what we need to keep sane and stay happy. After all, we spend majority of our lives at the workplace, so why not make it an awesome dwelling for all of us?

ho doesn’t look forward for Hari Raya? After so many years of celebrating Hari Raya, I am still that girl who will be head over heels for Hari Raya. Hari Raya is like the best day of the entire year and it sort of sums up the whole year for me. I can smell Rendang Tok already!

S

implicity is beauty. That’s what people usually say about many things. But for me, simplicity is not enough when it comes to my Raya wish. My Raya wish would still be simple, but in another manner. I just wish for my office to start at 10am and finish at 3pm... hehehe. I wish there were pool tables, a fully stocked kitchen, karaoke rooms, free massage rooms, free manicure and pedicure, game room (just imagine having a full arcade of games to play during lunch) and swimming pools in my office. What’s not to love about that right? Anyway, I just want to wish Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri to all my colleagues in DRB-HICOM.

I remember when I was a child I wish I could collect a lot of Duit Raya, however, as I grew older, my Raya wishes kept changing. However, the best of all is to maintain good relationship. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if each of us could uphold positive relationships, crave for friendship and practice positive interactions among us especially at our workplace?   My mom always says that if you smile, the world smiles with you. So, start your day with a smile. I know that some of us pretend to check our phones, walk straight ahead and rummage through bags avoiding eye contact or smile when passing by co-workers in this building. Seriously, this should stop! The better relationships we have at work, the happier and more productive we’re going to be.  I will leave you with a quote by the legendary writer, William Hazlitt: “A gentle word, a kind look, a goodnatured smile can work wonders and accomplish miracles”. If you see me around, don’t forget to smile. That will make my Raya Wish come true! 63
