GRADES

The Perfect Floor… The right floor can make all the difference to your room. From the size of the plank, to the colour, the grain, and the finish, our guide will help you create the perfect decor for your home.

BCD RUSTIC GRADE Here at Discount Flooring Depot, we have two types of grades. BCD Grade is the most popular grade of flooring. Unlike a laminate where all the boards are uniform, BCD Grade floor will contain colour variation, knotting and filler.

AB PRIME GRADE AB Grade, is the highest grade of flooring we provide. Its slight colour variation and low knot content provides a clean uniformed look. The grain is slightly straighter then the lower grades and the floor will contain very few and infrequent small knots and/than character marks.

FINISHES

LACQUERED

This finish offers a smoother matte surface with an extra protective high resistance coating. These floors will have a noticeable sheen, which helps to reflect light subtly around the room. They’re perfect for a highly glossy look in a room without a great deal of natural light.

BRUSHED AND OILED An alternative to lacquered is a oiled finished board. Brushed with a steel comb to bring out the texture of the grain and emphasise the natural feel of the floor. It is then treated with an Oil Wax coating which retains the character of the wood while also increasing its durability.

BRUSHED AND LACQUERED

SMOKED BUSHED WHITE OILED

Brushing a floor takes off the top layer of wood, exposing the unique varieties of grain and colour. The lacquer adds an extra layer of protection and reflects light. Combined with the brushed effect, it’s durable floor that easily hides minor scrapes and scratches.

These floors have been brushed for that unique, textured effect before being smoked in a drying room to give it a individually rich, dark colour. The white oil is then applied to protect the floor. These floors stand alone as a elegant, textured and rich product.

FINISHES

SMOKED LACQUERED

SMOKED OILED

This floor combines the rich and dark colours of a smoked floor, with the glossy appearance of a lacquer. The floor is smoked in a drying room before a high quality lacquer is added, which protects the wood.

Combining the elegant look of an oiled floor with the rich dark colour of a smoked floor, a smoked oiled floor is truly unique. This is ideal floor for those who want natural looking wood that is rich in character.

HANDSCRAPED

UNFINISHED

Handscraped flooring has a distressed and authentically worn look, adding character and an antique look. It’s unique lived in style is gorgeous in any home.

An unfinished floor is perfect if you want to give your floor your own unique style. With no surface finish, you can create a truly bespoke floor in terms of colour and durability, adding whatever oil, lacquer, or colour you desire.

WHAT ROOM? Most of our flooring types are suitable for use anywhere in your home, but the bathroom requires special attention. You’ll need flooring that provides excellent water-resistance. Our Hydroguard range is suitable for both the Bathroom and Kitchen area. Normal laminates will absorb the water and moisture whereas the Hydroguard range has a protective layer.

LOOK OUT FOR THIS SYMBOL ON OUR PRODUCTS

In a smaller room, you’ll want a floor that’s shorter in length, with a narrower width, as it’ll make the room appear larger. The opposite is true in a larger room, where wider and longer planks will help to fill the space.

NARROW PLANK

0-110mm width In a room without much natural light, you’re better to go for a lighter shade to your flooring. Dark flooring with chocolate or coffee tones sound delicious but will make your room appear smaller. In a room with small windows, a lighter shade will give a fantastic sense of space and freshness.

INSTALLATION BEFORE DELIVERY You’ll need to prep your room before your flooring arrives. Any wet decorating, like concreting, plastering and decorating should be complete well in advance. Make sure the room is thoroughly dry ahead of time. You should also make sure your room temperate and humidity are stable. A good fitter will be able to help out with this.

SUBFLOOR PREPARATION You’ll want your sub floor to be clean, dry, and as even as possible. If you’re in any doubt, get your fitter to have a look at it in advance.

INSTALLATION

MOISTURE READING Before installing a new floor It’s a good idea to carry out a moisture test on your subfloor to assess the moisture level. Moisture testing can identify problems early and minimise the risk of water damage. Often you will not see the symptoms of water damage until it is too late. Correct Treatment is essential to avoid future headaches. There are several methods used to test for moisture in the subfloor. Testing for moisture requires specialist equipment which your fitter should be able to supply for testing before the installation of the new floor.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING If you have underfloor heating, we don’t recommend installing solid wood flooring. Instead, opt for engineered, which gives you all the aesthetics of solid wood but works great with underfloor heating. Make sure you choose an underlay that works in conjunction with heating. We have a range available with more information later in the leaflet.

WOOD FLOORING

INSTALLATION ACCLIMATISING YOUR FLOOR As the saying goes “Measure Twice Cut Once”, make sure you have the right amount needed for the job, it will save you time and money. Different types of floors have different acclimatisation periods, meaning they should be left in the room they’ll be laid in for a number of days to make sure they don’t swell or shrink when laid.

AS A GENERAL RULE OF THUMB - Solid Wood requires 5 to 7 days acclimatisation. - Engineered flooring requires 3 to 4 days. - Laminate flooring only takes 24 hours. Make sure you order extra for wastage and to replace any boards that you don’t like. We generally recommend an extra 10% over your order, so if you need 20m2, order 22m2 to avoid disappointment. Wood flooring looks best when planks are installed in the same direction as the light, and down the length of the room. However, if you’re laying your floor on existing parquet, the boards should be set at right angles to the existing floor. We always recommend using a professional fitter. Laying flooring is tricky business, and you don’t want to waste an order of quality flooring with a botched installation.

ACCESSORIES Purchasing the right accessories is essential for installing your new floor with ease and getting the perfect finish.

UNDERLAY Flooring underlay is used to float laminate flooring or engineered wood and will provide a better laying surface for a wooden floor installation. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing your underlay and measuring the amount you need.

Make sure you have an even subfloor and suitable underlay for your installation. It may save you any problems in the furture.

WHAT IS YOUR FLOORING TYPE? (LAMINATE/SOLID/REAL WOOD ETC. WHAT IS THE SUBFLOOR TYPE? (CONCRETE/WOOD/TILE ETC). IS THE ROOM YOU ARE ON THE GROUND FLOOR OR FIRST FLOOR? WHAT SIZE IS THE AREA? ARE YOU TRYING TO REDUCE NOISE? IS UNDERFLOOR HEATING BEING USED? It’s important to select the correct laminate flooring or wooden floor underlay for your installation, as it will complement the type floor you’re fitting on top. It can all be a bit confusing, but our detailed produced descriptions and experienced sales team can help advise you what flooring underlay would be ideal for you if you’re not sure yourself.

WOOD FLOORING

ACCESSORIES There are a range of underlays available. Our White Foam underlay is the most basic, but if you’ve got a concrete subfloor, you’ll need our White Foam PVC underlay, as it’s built in PVC sheaf stops moisture from transferring through. For rooms where sound reduction is essential, such as an apartment with neighbours beneath, we have a variety of sound dampening underlays to fit your needs. A few examples would be our Fibreboard Underlay, which is ideal for sound reduction that is easy on the pocket. Check out our wesite for a full range of our underlays!

Our Rewmar 250 Acoustic Underlay provides excellent insulation and sound reduction, and is suitable for concrete and timber subfloors due to it’s high quality moisture membrane.

If your room has underfloor heating, you’ll need to choose your underlay carefully. Our Underfloor Heating Underlay is economic, fully compatible with heating systems, and also provides excellent sound dampening and softness under foot. To cover all the bases, our Timberfoil Flooring Underlay offers moisture production, sound dampening, and is fully compatible with underlay heating systems.

Check out the a range of colours of beading, door trims and profiles online now!

TRIMS AND PROFILES For door ways and door frames, you’ll need trims and profiles to cover up the gaps between your flooring. We’ve a range available, from the classic silver and gold metal trims to wooden stick down trims to match your floor. If you’ve got two rooms with different floor heights, our stick down ramp profiles will make a subtle gradient up or down between floors,

ADHESIVES Most floors don’t need to be glued down, and you’re often better ‘floating’ them over an underlay rather than gluing them down. The Rewmar Adhesive Sausage works with the applicator gun for gluing solid wood floors only. For laminate and vinyl floors, no glue is required, any of our floors with a click locking system doesn’t require glue just simply click them together! Need some inspiration? WOOD FLOORING The stairs need to be measured on every step, and the B measurement comes from the width of the carpet. If the stairs are uncarpeted, add 50cm overall, to allow for underlay.

Example 4

A

B

Tip For winding stairs: Again if the stairs are uncarpeted add 2.5cm to each step to allow for underlay, plus 50cm overall, to allow for underlay. You should also add 7.5cm on the width to allow for trimming.

Measure A over the top step and allow 5cm to tuck in. Measure into every door way, making sure you have the longest measurements. The correct way for the pile is to walk into the pile up the stairs, so walking onto the landing would be the length and the B measurement would come from the width of the carpet.

A

B

A B

To the left shows a half landing, not all staircases will have them, if yours does then it is measured in the same way as the landing. In this example the A measurement would come from the width of carpet, B will be the length plus half a step and 5cm to tuck in.

Tip: Make sure that you keep the flooring running the same direction. If you change the direction of the pattern, texture and pile of the carpet will reflect light differently.

WOOD FLOORING

CARING FOR YOUR FLOOR SOLID WOOD AND ENGINEERED WOOD A hardwood floor will not withstand the brunt of daily life forever. Eventually, no matter how well you look after your floor and how often you shout at family members for scraping their chairs across it, eventually you’ll need to give it a little extra maintenance. It’s important to maintain your floor’s finish, if it has one. Without the protective coat of oil or lacquer, your floor will become susceptible to dirt and water, which can penetrate the surface and make the floor difficult to clean. Routine maintenance is particularly important for floors with distinctive finishes, as sanding them down to remove stains and scratches will take out all traces of an original colour or texture. A real wood or engineered wood floor should be recoated every 2 to 3 years, but your individual mileage will vary.

WOOD FLOORING

CARING FOR YOUR FLOOR TESTING YOUR COAT To select a high traffic area and pour a few drops of water onto the floor. A well finished floor will force beads of water to form on the surface. If the water soaks in slowly, leaving behind a light saturation mark, then your finish is wearing through and you’ll need a new coat of oil or lacquer very soon. If the water is immediately absorbed and leaves behind a dark stain and this indicates that the coating has completely worn away and your floor may need to be sanded and recoated. Stains and spills can be cleaned with specialist products such as the Oslo Wash & Care solution that we stock, but they’re no substitute for a good protective oil or lacquer finish.

LAMINATES AND VINYLS While laminates are much more resistant to the daily bustle of a busy life, they can still be damaged and worn down. Laminates are water resistant but excessive spillages can cause damage and dampness to seep through the floor. They can be scratched and scraped, and can’t be sanded down or lacquered to cover any damage. Vinyls are waterproof and tough. They’re easy to wipe clean and don’t tend to stain. They’re hard to scratch but can be ripped, and in that case, they’ll need to be replaced. Take particular care around doors and high traffic areas. If your door rubs against your vinyl every time you open it, you’ll end up with a rip before too long. You could repair it with adhesive or a seam sealer, but deep cuts will require replacement.
