“When I came back to Oman and during my six year stint at Oman Air, where I worked as an Aircraft Development Engineer, I involved myself in training and attending everything I possibly could concerning entrepreneurship and Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs),” said Ghassan. “It was a good time and financial investment to prepare me for what was to come. I managed to build a good network in this area and when an opportunity arose for me to move to another career in support SMEs, as an In-Country Value professional at Daleel Petroleum LLC, I jumped at it.”

This new position helped Ghassan get closer to entrepreneurship and helped him create a number of SME programs in support of local entrepreneurs. “Entrepreneurship became a passion for me, perhaps even an obsession. My coffee discussions with friends and family all now revolved around entrepreneurship and business ideas. At the same time, I started my side gig as a coach and speaker and also co-founded the Andalusia Spa with my sisters. “Around this same time, I decided to try a few new things and get a feel what kind of business would work for me. With trial and error I eventually discovered what I was really good at helping others perform better at their business and as leaders,” he said. As a result, Ghassan Fadhal the Social Intelligence and Entrepreneurship coach was born. Today, under Ghassan Fadhal Enterprises LLC, he established BizNas Entrepreneurship Advisory Services, a company that caters to the needs of entrepreneurs. He is also in the process of co-founding ‘A La Parte’, a shared economy platform for the buying and selling of spare parts globally. We caught up with Ghassan to seek his advice on entrepreneurship and what young entrepreneurs need to look out for when starting out on their own business venture. Here are the excerpts from the interview: Why did you take up entrepreneurship over a corporate career? I am still employed with an aim to grow the business for me to move into it fully. This pattern has been an effective model for a lot of successful entrepreneurs worldwide. So yes, I work at a corporate job but it is to help me finance my business. Entrepreneurs like myself seek three main things – making a positive change, freedom, and making enough money to be financially independent. These three things can be achieved through entrepreneurship, but it requires dedication and hard work for a substantial amount of time. I always advise businesses that they need to think of surviving over a long term within the market in order to be successful.

COVER STORY Do you ever stop learning? How do you continue to educate yourself? My greatest assets as an entrepreneur, are my ideas and knowledge; as such, I consider continuous learning essential for me to grow. I try to learn from as many sources as possible. There are however three primary sources of knowledge that many successful entrepreneurs rely on – reading books and journals, attending courses, and learning by asking and discussing with experts. Many of the entrepreneurs I have coached achieved success in their businesses after developing the habit of reading. What do you enjoy most about your job? Is there something you are most proud of? In the entrepreneurship advisory business, the thing I enjoy most is the continuous exposure I get to new innovative ideas and business models. I am also happiest when I see how a business transforms, grows, and achieves success after being advised by us. I am most proud of the fact that I have guided hundreds of SMEs in Oman and that our efforts have been recognised with the MENAA Best Personal Brand Award 2019. What role do your partnerships and relationships play in your career? One thing I emphasise and put a great deal of importance on is my network, relations, and collaborations. In todays entrepreneurship culture, collaboration is a key factor for success and you need to be open to working
12 FACES July 2020
with other organisations by forming strategic partnerships. You have to remember that you are as strong as your network and your business is as strong as its strategic partners. Please share with us some of the challenges you feel young Omani Entrepreneurs face Some of the challenges a lot of Omani entrepreneurs may face is that the regulatory systems and business environment in Oman is not yet matured to cater fully towards modern entrepreneurship and requires more progressive improvements. We also have challenges with the local culture not yet fully accepting social entrepreneurship as an accepted career path for individuals and they mix up business owners with job seekers still looking to start up their own personal businesses. Another obstacle to growth is that the Omani market is a small market and not big
enough to create scalable businesses. If you have an innovative business solution you might need to expand outside of Oman to make it big. How different is your coaching methodology and services? Tell us more about your own start-up’s journey so far? When it comes to BizNas, our SME advisory service, it came as a response to the needs of SMEs in the market not having many places for entrepreneurs to go to for help. We started slow with online services where we offer coaching services and support mentorship programs for our clients. What makes us unique is we try to solve the dilemmas small businesses face, especially with regards to having to deal with key business functions such as marketing, finance, HR, legal, etc. How do we do that you ask? Instead of them having to hire an army of employees they can’t afford, we provide
them expert coaches and mentors specialised in these areas to advise them and solve the problems for them for a fraction of what they would have to pay as a salary for an employee. Our Moto is “Making Business Simple” and our slogan is “Business For People”. We have been offering this service since 2016 and for some time now we have been involved in collaborations with Tawasul and Al Rudha on their programmes, Mulhimat and EBDA; which were sponsored by BP for three batches each. This means that we were able to make more from our B2B than from our B2C, which in turn has helped us keep our prices low and affordable for individual entrepreneurs seeking help. In fact, since we established, we have been able to offer a lot of free programs and pro bono consulting for student start-ups.
What are your most prominent pieces of advice for budding entrepreneurs? What are the first things they need to be aware of when getting started and what do they need to do to maximise their chances for success? Number one thing is to have the right idea. All businesses are ideas and great portion of businesses fail due to the idea not being the right one in the first place. It is worth discussing the idea and refining it over and over again. The second piece of advice I have is to start small and nimble, to test the idea in the market first. I use a model I call the “Instapreneur” where I advise to start it first on Instagram and sell it to about 100 customers, learning from the feedback and then scaling it to 1,000. Once that’s done you will have enough data to decide if this business will grow and you will be able to move it to a physical location if applicable. Of
course this will work only for some types of businesses; for others we would need to check and discuss the best possible approach. How can a person know if a business sector or niche is the right one to enter? My criteria for starting a business in any given sector is based on three key factors that I call “the great business idea triangle,” wherein the sector should have: 1. A great pain point that you are solving. The more the pain point for the customer the more the return. 2. Large number of customers willing to pay for your solution. 3. Your ability to deliver, compete, and reach all those customers. Higher level competition might hurt you and unless you have the ability to serve them at a level that is exceptionally better, most will go to your competitors.

COVER STORY
What are the most important qualities that one must possess or develop in order to be successful as an entrepreneur? Insight and forward thinking, a positive mental attitude, emotional and social intelligence, patience and hope, and a continuous growth mindset. What are the largest pitfalls that budding entrepreneurs in Oman can face and how can they avoid/work around them? Not having control over cashflow and not understanding their finance. A good accounting software will save you a lot of hassle and give you better understanding of your business model and operation, as well as help you plan ahead and fix problems. Also, many try to be protective of their ideas and don’t share and discuss them with experts who are willing to help them. It is always a good idea to have people you can discuss with or be part of a support group of other entrepreneurs, who can provide you with insight and solutions to your problems. I personally have a master mind group that used to meet on a weekly basis before COVID, but we are trying to stay in touch virtually now. What do you see as the biggest challenges in the Omani market? I think one major challenge is overregulation and also the government having a lot of involvement; in many situations even acting as the buyer and the seller. This means that if the government
14 FACES July 2020
is not doing well financially, the entire market would suffer alongside it. In the aviation industry there is this idea of deregulation where the government makes it a free market and the market forces of supply and demand balance the market. If a similar situation was applied, it would help balance the market here as well as open up more opportunities for SMEs to compete in. Another challenge is we need to open up our market a little more to the world, which will benefit in improving services here and facilitate the innovation of new solutions and perhaps even the export of Omani solutions to the world. It will also address the challenge of branding Oman to the world, so that people will associate Oman with business. This will develop familiarity, trust and loyalty with Omani brands. What advice do you have on handling the pressure and managing stress? Stress is not always a bad thing unless you make it become a problem. In fact, some stress is needed to help you perform at optimum levels and that is good stress.
The first thing we need to do to handle stress properly is to embrace it with positivity and think of it as a motivator to improve and do better at business. Secondly, you need to make sure you have good rest and take good care of your health in order to ensure the stress does not affect you physically. Good exercise and sleep are essential. Most importantly however, set aside family time to de-stress. Thirdly, I found Islamic spiritual sufism practices of prayers with focus and thikr as a really beneficial way to remove stress and negative energy out of your system and it helps you create balance. Can you tell us on how to best manage one’s personal and professional life? Remember why are you doing what you are doing and that you need to priorities yourself and your loved ones. We all get sucked into work and business a bit too much sometimes. But you need to keep in mind that should you fall ill and are lying in a hospital bed; it will be your loved ones that will be spending sleepless nights worried by your bed. So, remember to give them a good share of your time and make sure it is actual quality time. Build it into your daily and weekly programme to set aside some personal time for yourself and your family. Simply put, it is all about setting your priorities straight and then working your way through, organising them in such a way as to give an equal share of your time to each side. You also need to fully understand your limits. Know what you can and cannot do and learn to simply say no to whatever is beyond your capacity. Remember that burning yourself out in a short period of time will not get you to the top, rather it is the small but consistent steps over a longer period of time that will get you to your goal. As the saying goes “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” So, don’t bite more than you can chew and just take enough of your share so that you can grow steadily and organically

The Art of Calligraphy with Komal Ganatra Komal Ganatra tells FACES the story of what drove her towards a career in art and how she established her own studio ‘Komal & Color’
B
orn and brought up in Oman, Komal Ganatra is popular artist and calligraphist and the founder of Komal & Color – a creative design studio she started out of her love for modern calligraphy and watercolours. Her art pieces, which she looked at only as a hobby initially, quickly gained traction on her social media pages. “I enjoyed this art of writing and practiced it day and night, while looking for jobs on the side. I played around with different forms and mediums and started posting my work on Instagram. This sparked interest and people seemed interested in learning the art,” she said. In response to the continued requests, sometime in March 2017, she decided to host her first ever workshop in Muscat. On receiving a great response she decided to dig a little deeper into the industry. She said, “Doing some research, I figured that there’s a whole new industry of calligraphists and wedding stationers in the West. The fact that people actually made a living
out of writing beautifully styled words caught my attention; and without realising it I was working towards making my passion into a profession. “Because I love what I do, I worked incredibly hard to figure out things like how to digitise paintings, taking good pictures, building a website, client communication etc. and spent hours learning these skills online, which in turn helped to enhance my work,” she said. Today, under the banner of Komal & Color, she continues to host workshops and take up commissioned projects to help others bring their artistic vision to life.
16 FACES August 2020
IN CONVERSATION Can you tell us about the thought process that goes into each of your art pieces? Understanding the client’s vision is very important. I do commissions for both - personal and corporate. So, it depends a lot on the customer’s requirements, and every process differs from project to project. I usually start with sketching out the idea, keeping in mind the end user and how it’s going to impact them; and gradually work towards the ultimate design. What in your opinion is the key behind the success of Komal & Color? “Practice makes progress” is something I truly believe in. Especially with art, you have to spend an enormous amount of time just creating, until you come up with a phenomenal idea. But this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the people in Oman. I’m extremely grateful for their constant
trust in my work. Last but not the least, the support of my family, who’ve been my biggest strength and sometimes an even bigger critic. What advice do you have for someone who wishes to start a business in the art industry? Don’t be afraid to fail. Mistakes and failures help you realise what you don’t like about the business and is a stepping-stone towards shaping your career. You never forget your failures and hence you will never repeat them. Another major advice would be not to calculate your success based on your Instagram likes. With the growing social media world today, we often tend to get carried away with each notification and tend to lose sight of the real reason why you started. What career accomplishment are you most proud of and why? The journey of Komal & Color itself has been something I’m immensely
proud of. But if I had to pick one, I’d say teaching. I teach calligraphy and watercolours. And it’s the most rewarding feeling to see the joy on their faces while learning a new craft. What is your current most important goal for Komal & Color? What steps are you taking to attain it? The goal is to always keep learning and getting better with each project. This means working more hours and adding more creative hands to build a team. If you mentored younger artists who are beginning their art careers what single most important piece of advice would you offer? It takes sheer dedication and persistence to build a brand. So, my only advice would be to put in all your effort and more. Passion will only show you the way, hard work will help you build the path. Stay focused and have fun while at it.

Turning Dreams into Reality An Interview With Wardalmuna Alkhonji
Wardalmuna Alkhonji Interior Design is one of the fastest growing interior design studios in Oman. FACES caught up with Wardalmuna herself to learn of the story behind its success “A Building is the mere foundation of any established entity. It is the elements that create its atmosphere, and the factors that contribute to the creation of its identity – these are what determines quality.” These are the words that headline Wardalmuna Alkhonji Interior Design, a one-stop-shop interior design studio created by the ambitious Engineer Wardalmuna Alkhonji. A pioneer in the field of interior design in Oman, Wardalmuna established her Interior Design Studio in the summer of 2016 with a clear purpose of making its customers’ visions a reality in the most meaningful way possible; providing them guidance and support, listening to their stories, and using these tools to bring the interior of their dreams to life. Wardalmuna has always shared a passion for art and mathematics and an eye for business. “I am as much a businesswoman as I

am an interior designer, maybe even more so. My father has always been my greatest inspiration. Observing him work is how I learnt all my business skills. My mother, on the other hand, always had a flair for art, design, and mathematics, and I believe I picked up my love for these subjects from her.

“As surprising as it may sound, I did not initially plan on taking up interior designing as a career. I was recommended it by my family, as they felt it would suit my tastes in art and would be the one that would fill in an untapped niche within the Oman market,” she added. Following their recommendation, she took up interior design at the Northumbria School of Design - Northumbria University, New Castle, UK. On completing her course and returning to Oman, she took a twoyear break followed by a short stint at a small local design office, one that was relatively well versed in interior design. “During my time with them I learnt quite a few valuable skills as well as gained a better understanding of the market. This also allowed me to gauge how I could better implement my skills and knowledge to carve my own path ahead,” she said. “One thing I figured out relatively quickly was that interior design as a
concept is still in its infancy here in the Sultanate. The market is still learning to grasp the ideas and concepts behind it. As a result, the market is more concerned with physical deliverables such a technical drawings and 3D designs as opposed to discussing and formulating high-quality concepts and designs that are tailored to their needs. They also still work around a “per sq.m” payment system that does not logically lend itself well to a design practice, especially one where
time spent on a project is proportional to complexity of the project and not its size.” According to Wardalmuna, Interior design is science melded with art. It’s not just about selecting a colour and adding whatever customers want. It has a lot to do with the practicality of the space and telling a story, taking account of how many people use the space and in what way they will do so; all of which are more important than just the basic look of the area.

“Our job as interior designers is to offer solutions to your ideas or problems. It’s similar to the work doctors do. One does not go to a doctor and request for medication. They instead inform them of their symptoms or issues they face and it’s the doctor’s job to diagnose and prescribe the appropriate treatment or medication. “True interior design works in much the same way. It’s not the job of an interior designer to just design a space based on the client’s requests wordfor-word and do it as fast as possible. It is our job to take a client’s ideas and advise them on what works and what doesn’t, offering them alternatives

wherever possible; especially if it is something that will adversely affect them in the long run. In the end, offering them something that is aesthetically pleasing, functional, and uniquely tailored to their needs,” said Wardalmuna. With these concepts in mind, Wardalmuna set out on her journey with two objectives in mind – to open her own design studio and to do everything in her power to spread awareness and educate the market on interior design. “I don’t necessarily believe in operating a large sized design studio. I prefer in keeping things small yet dynamic. I focus on
creativity and innovation, not size. Working with a smaller number of staff not only keeps overheads low but also allows us to stay focused and work closer with our clients, developing designs that truly benefit them.” With this in mind, she set up the Wardalmuna Alkhonji Interior Design Studio in 2016. “For anyone starting a business, it is important to know where you stand and understand your limits. While it is good to challenge yourself, it is also never a good idea to try and compete at a level you know you cannot handle. You need to recognise where your market is and capitalise on it to the best of your ability.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
She added, “From the very moment I decided to start my own business I knew I wanted it to be a lifetime thing. This is why I started it slow. I wanted it to grow organically. I didn’t want it to grow too fast and go beyond what I could handle.” Working with minimal staff, Wardalmuna began taking on some truly challenging projects, touching the hearts of everyone she has worked with and exceeding expectations with each new design. In no time her portfolio began to grow and today includes some truly prominent government and private sector projects, both commercial and residential. At around the same time that she established her design studio, and in her quest to raise the profile of interior designers in the country, she started an exclusive group via WhatsApp for Omani designers. As part of the group she organised several meetings on a monthly basis, inviting influential speakers from the industry to spread their knowledge. Sadly, the current situation has put a damper on their meetings. However, Wardalmuna remained undeterred and continues to organise meeting online via Zoom.
Outside of the designer’s group, she also hosts a number of workshops and gives presentations at local colleges and universities on a regular basis. She has also launched a new website for her business which will now act as a front for her business. With a focus on accessibility, especially in light of the current situation, all her studio’s services are available virtually for customers right from the comfort of their home. Interested parties can also request for consultations, virtual or in-house training, workshops or even booking a one-to-one session to discuss matters that customers are unsure how to handle. When asked about what advice she would like to give to budding interior designers, looking to start their own business, Wardalmuna said, “Picking the right university and course is extremely vital. Ask experienced designers for advice and pick what is right for you. Work on your English as it is the key to success in this business. More importantly, don’t let money be the driving force behind your business; rather love what you do and let your ideas and innovation guide you. Self-fulfilment is what is truly important. Make a goal for yourself, as long as you achieve that, you have achieved success; regardless of what other people think. But the greatest piece of advice I can give is to always remember your name is far more valuable than money. You can always earn back money you have lost, but redeeming a tarnished reputation is borderline impossible. Always be professional, respectful, manage time properly, and work with integrity. Believe in yourself and love what you do, this is the recipe for success in any business.”

Breaking into eCommerce
Looking to take your home business or brick and mortar store online? We are here to help. Here is a quick guide to help you get started
O
ver the course of the past year, the global market situation has changed drastically. Global lockdowns, social distancing measures, and travel restrictions, as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, have forced an increasing number of formerly brick and mortar stores and small home businesses to look towards alternative business opportunities. With people looking towards the online world to satiate their shopping needs, especially in Oman, a shift towards eCommerce is a no-brainer. Fortunately, the shift is easier than you may initially think it is. Here are some quick tips to help you get the ball rolling.
Choose and Secure your Domain
The very first thing you need to do is secure your domain. This is by far one of the most critical components of taking your business online. The first step is to pick the extension. The most common of these, and also the one you would want to ideally get, is ‘.com’. However, Domain names are relatively cheap and thousands of new domain names are registered each day around the world. So, there is a chance you may not always find the domain name you want with your choice of extension. There are alternative extensions that you can try. If your business is based locally in Oman, a ‘.om’ extension could work well. Outside of these two, there are others such as ‘.net’ and ‘.org’ or even some niche extensions like ‘.blog’, ‘.photography’ etc. Do keep in mind that some of latter ones are considered untrustworthy and can harm the overall traffic you receive.
22 FACES August 2020
SPECIAL
Once you have decided on an extension, you will want to choose the domain name itself. Ideally you would want to get a domain that is identical to your business name. But this may not always be possible. If this is the case, there are a couple of simple tips you can follow to get one that works. The first thing to do is to keep it short and simple. At the same time, you need your domain name to be unique, catchy, and memorable, so you can stand out in your customers’ minds. Try and choose keywords that are related to your business and incorporate them into your domain. This can help your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) results and raise your rank in online search results. Do keep in mind never to use hyphens, avoid using doubled letters, and avoid numbers. Each of these are prone to typos and can lead to lost traffic.
Design your Website
One your domain is registered, it’s time to work on your website. To setup an ecommerce website there are three key components you will need in addition to whatever a regular website requires. The first of these is a payment processing tool. Many domain registration service providers or webhosting services (more in this below) can offer such tools. A thirdparty service like PayPal can also work well. Using a well-recognised and secure payment tool will lend more credibility to your business. The second thing you will need is a shopping cart tool. As with the payment tools, these can also be sourced from domain registration service providers or webhosting services or can even be
designed yourself if required. Last, but most important, is an SSL Certificate (Secure Sockets Layer certificate). This is vital for any website that wishes to carry out online transactions. They are used to encrypt information your customers send when they purchase products or complete forms on your website. These are also the very first thing most online users look for before they make an online purchase. Hand-in-hand with obtaining the above tools, you need to decide where your website will be hosted. The great part about this is that most domain registration services also provide web hosting service, as well as most of the aforementioned payment tools you would need to kick off your online business.
Once you have decided on a domain, registering it is relatively simple. All you need to do is get in touch with a service provider that offers domain registrations and pay them to register a domain of your choice for a specific amount of time. So long the domain is registered to you, no one else can claim it.

SPECIAL Once you have each of these tools in place, you can get down to actually designing your website. If aren’t already well versed in web designing, you need not fret. There are several online easy-to-use DIY website builders you can get a hold of today. WordPress is a particularly good example that offers you a broad range of free or paid themes and plugins to really give your website a professional feel. Alternatively, if you don’t mind spending the extra cash, you can always hire professional designers to design your webpage for you. Another core part of the website is the content itself. Good, professionally written content is crucial to growing your online business. The key to success is to add just the right amount of quality content on key pages of your website so that people can easily access all information they require. Focus on key pages first such as your Home page, About Us page, Contact Us page, and your Products pages. These are the first pages most visitors look at. Well written content, coupled with easily accessible quick links, high-quality visuals, and easy access to key information with regards to purchases, shipping, payments, and returns will go a long way in making you look and feel professional as well as build trust. Another core aspect of content is SEO. This is the process of refining the content on your website in such a way as to achieve higher search engine rankings. In order to achieve this, you need to make sure all content on your page is relevant to your target customer, and that you make proper use of keywords and phrases that are common to your area of business. All the effort you placed in your website won’t be of much use if you can’t be found easily on most common search engines. This is where search engine optimisation comes in. Fondly known as SEO, this is the process of refining the content on your website in such a way as to achieve higher search engine rankings. The best part of good SEO is that you get higher placements on search engines such as google for free, without having to pay for sponsored listings. This also ensures organic visitors to your site are more common. Carefully planned out navigation with proper links and properly labelled high-quality images can also drastically help your SEO results.

SPECIAL The Business Back End
With your website ready to go live, there is one other aspect of your business you need to look into – the back end. The first of these is properly deciding what products you are wishing to sell online. While service-based firms need not worry about this as much, more common brick and mortars stores need to look for storage and shipping solutions if they don’t already have this in place. E-commerce business relies more on direct shipping, hence it may be beneficial to trim down your inventories to keep costs low. Calculate the costs and see what is viable and remove items off your list accordingly. If
these do pose a problem for you, drop shipping can a decent alternative. This is a common practice that sees the retailer transfer its customer's orders and shipment details to either the manufacturer or a wholesaler, who then ship the goods directly to the customer from their factory or warehouse. Another great solution worth looking into is Enterprise Resource Planning software. This useful piece of kit brings together all facets of your operation – from marketing and logistics, to customer service, and integrates it all into one singular piece of software
in order to make it far more seamless and efficient. There are several service providers that offer such a service and they can be quite affordable. So, should your online business grow to a large enough size, we would definitely recommend looking into this solution. With each of these aspects in place, you will be all ready to take your business online as well as maximise its chances for success. So, why wait? Get your brand out there and make your mark on the online eCommerce world today; the earlier you start the better your chances for success

LET’S COOK
Chocolate
Babka
A Delicious Swirl of Chocolate and Cake Chocolate Babka is warm, comforting, and mouth-wateringly delicious dish that looks complex but is surprisingly easy to make
A
babka is a sweet braided bread or cake which first originated in Polish Jewish communities sometime in the early 19th century. The dish was mostly unheard of outside of these communities until the latter part of the 20th century. This is when European-style bakeries started popping up in Israel and in the US. The original dish was rolled up with fruit jam or cinnamon. Chocolate was not originally used, and most probably originated when bakers started offering the dish with several different choices of fillings as it began to grow in popularity. In addition to chocolate, these fillings included poppy seeds, almond paste, cheese, and more. But the Chocolate Babka is by far the most popular variant made today and this is what we will be showing you how to prepare. So, why not get your loaf pans and baking trays ready to prepare this traditional yet delicious dish.
Ingredients: Dough • • • • • • • •
4 cups (600g) plain flour 1 tbs (14g) dried yeast 150g butter, chopped 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 1 cup lukewarm whole milk 2 teaspoons fine sea salt 1/2 cup (110g) sugar
Chocolate Filling • • • • •
250g milk chocolate, finely chopped 85g bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped 100g unsalted butter, softened 1 1/2 cups finely ground chocolate wafer cookies 3 tablespoons honey
Glaze • •
1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
26 FACES August 2020
Preparing the dough Step 1: Combine the yeast, milk, water and 1 tsp of the sugar in a small bowl. Set aside until frothy; which should take approximately 5 mins. While waiting, whisk the flour with the remaining sugar and salt in a medium/large sized bowl. Step2: Add the yeast mixture, eggs and egg yolks and mix at low speed in a stand mixer until everything is well mixed and the dough is smooth.
LET’S COOK
Step 3: Start adding butter, one piece at a time, to the mixture and knead the dough until it is very smooth and elastic. Step 4: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough stand at room temperature for about an hour; then place inside a refrigerator overnight. It should roughly double in size the next day.
Making the Filling Melt both chocolates together with the butter by placing the ingredients in a heat-proof bowl over simmering water; stirring occasionally to ensure a smooth mix. Let the mixture cool to room temperature before mixing in the cookie crumbs and honey.
Preparation and Baking Step 1: Grease two 10cm x 24cm loaf pans and line the bases and sides with baking paper. Do the same with a baking tray. Step 2: On a lightly floured surface, divide the dough into two even portions. Step 3: Roll 1 portion out into a rough 30cm x 40cm rectangle and spread
roughly half of the chocolate mixture evenly across it Step 4: Starting from 1 long end, roll the dough into a log and place it into the lined tray. Step 5: Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling and chill both until they are firm; this should take around five minutes. Step 6: Place one of the logs on a clean surface and use a sharp knife to cut it in half lengthwise. Then Carefully twist both halves together to form a loaf and place it into the loaf pan. Repeat the process with the other log. Step 7: Cover both with a towel and let them stand in a warm, draughtfree place for about two hours or until they have roughly doubled in bulk. In the meantime, Preheat the oven to 180°. Step 8: When ready, bake the loaves in the centre of the oven for about 35-45 minutes, or until puffed and well browned. You can also insert a skewer into it centre and pull it out to check. If it comes out clean, it is ready.
Making the Glaze To make the glaze, combine the sugar with about 125ml of water and the vanilla bean paste in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for 2 mins or until the sugar completely dissolves. Once it does, increase the heat to bring it to boil. Cook it for about 2-3 mins or until the syrup thickens slightly. Pour this syrup over each of the loaves, let it cool, and it will then be ready to be cut into slices and served. This is, however, just one way to prepare this delicious dish. There are several alterations you can make to the recipe to better suit your taste. Instead of making the chocolate filling yourself, you can instead use a chocolate spread such as Nutella. You could use water or a combination of milk and water, instead of the milk we used. You an even add a bit of cinnamon to the chocolate filling for taste (1/4 to 1 teaspoon) or even add a combination of chocolate chips and chunks on top of the filling for extra flavour and texture. The options are only limited by your creativity.

SPICE RACK
Saffron
The Red Gold of Spices
While not exactly rare, Saffron is still one of the most expensive spices in the world. But what is it that makes Saffron so expensive? Read on to find out
S
affron has long been the world’s most costly spice by weight with just one pound of the spice (450 grams) costing anywhere between USD 500 and 5,000. The name of the spice generally refers to the vivid crimson stigma and styles, more commonly called threads, collected from the flower of the Crocus Sativus, or “Saffron Crocus” as it is more commonly known. The use of Saffron is thought to have originated in Greece during the Bronze Age before eventually making its way to North Africa, North America, and Oceania. Today however, it is Iran that produces nearly 90% of the world’s saffron. The spice itself is primarily used as a seasoning and colouring agent in food. It has a subtle sweet taste and hay-like aroma and contributes a luminous yellow-orange colouring to foods. It is this subtleness that pairs it well with savoury dishes; which is why it is widely used in Persian, Indian, European, and Arab cuisines and
28 FACES August 2020

confectioneries. The best way to draw out saffron’s unique flavour is to soak just a few threads in hot water (not boiling) and then add the liquid, threads included, to your recipe. Outside of food, saffron is also used in liquors and as a fabric dye. It has also been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and with good reason. Saffron contains an impressive number of antioxidants, including crocin, crocetin, safranal, and kaempferol. Although more tests need to be conducted, these chemicals have been linked to health benefits such as reduced inflammation, anti-cancer properties, antidepressant activity, reduced heart disease risk, lowered blood sugar levels, and improved eyesight and memory. Saffron is readily available at most markets and can be purchased as threads or in powdered form. However, as mentioned earlier, Saffron is extremely expensive. This is primarily because of how labour-intensive the production process it. Depending on the yield it can take as many as 75,000 flowers to make just one pound of saffron spice. Which have to be harvested and dried by hand, given how delicate the flowers are. Unfortunately, this cost and the difficulty of production leads to saffron being adulterated with ingredients such as beet, red-dyed silk fibres, turmeric, and paprika, to boost volumes. It is therefore important to purchase saffron only from a reputable brand and absolutely avoid any that appear too cheap.

WHAT’S NEW IN FOOD
Bon Appétit with 3D Printed Food! Visually appealing, intricately designed, and flavourful nutrition - 3D Printed food is fast becoming the new go to trend in the food sphere!
I
t is often said that people eat with their eyes. Chefs across the world have practiced for years to elegantly dress a plate and make a meal look appeasing. However, something more thrilling, and rather unconventional is making its way into the culinary arts. Yes! 3D Printed Food is what we’re talking about. Using various additive manufacturing methods, 3D Printed food is achieved using a similar mechanism to that of a regular FDM 3D Printer. Viscous material added onto a surface, and Voilà! There you have it! This usually involves a food grade nozzle and some time. The 3D food printer builds the design one layer at a time as the nozzle deposits the printing material onto the surface. 3D printing of food is however, still in its infancy and has a long way to go. The kinds of food that can be 3D printed is heavily dependent on the technologies and materials present in the market. It is mostly used by pastry chefs and fine dining restaurants, this new style of food presentation is used to bring out details and intricacies to add a layer of depth and visual flair for a consumer. Currently, the most common form used is called Extrusion Based Printing, where substances of a paste-like consistency are passed through the machine to produce a final object. Purées, ganaches, mousses and other similar ingredients can be used. Although the current scope seems limited, there are endless possibilities that are already being put to the test when it comes to 3D printed food.
30 FACES August 2020
WHAT’S NEW IN FOOD would take more than 45 minutes to print. Apart from the time consumed, the cost of equipment and materials may also serve as a challenge, and the prep time and effort for food materials that are to be used can also be a setback. Although 3D food printing has not achieved much commercial success just yet, there are benefits that make it a much more favourable method. 3D Food printers usually print the design and do not cook the food. The food is often cooked after the design has been printed. However, 3D printed food can be customised in shape, colour, nutrition, flavours, and texture. Not only does this make the food more visually appealing, which is a bonus for restaurants, but their ability to maintain absolute precision makes it boon for food at hospitals, as it can provide the option for “perpatient customisation.”
Other forms of 3D Food Printing involve Hot melt extrusion where the food material, such as chocolate, is melted slightly above its melting point and then released onto the surface where it quickly hardens. Binder Jetting and Selective laser sintering (SLS) are other forms of 3D food printing. Both use powdered food materials to produce the final result. In SLS, the powdered food material is bound by heat. However, Binder Jetting uses a liquid binder which forms a layer and is then sprayed with a layer of powder. Both these methods are known for their ability to create intricate structures and various textures. Despite the excitement that surrounds 3D food printing, there are some drawbacks. Time and money are currently the two primary factors. A 3D food printer manufacturer named Choc Edge claims that it can take seven minutes to complete a simple six layered design. But a complex design
3D printed food is also of great benefit to the health industry in terms of incentivising the consumption of traditionally avoided foods. When food looks amazing, the tummy starts growling! 3D printed food allows us to visually amaze using nutritious plants in paste like consistencies to make the food more likeable. Additionally, reproducing 3D printed food by sharing your recipes is just as easy as you would do in the digital world. Just send the file over! As long as the person reproducing the food has the same ingredients, settings, and the right equipment, you have a copy of what you wanted to recreate. Overall, the 3D Food Printing industry is on its journey to success. Just a couple of years ago 3D Printing as a whole was an alien technology to us, yet today we can find advanced resin 3D printers, capable of incredible levels of detail, for use in our very homes at affordable prices. With such consistent advancement in technology and mankind’s desire to achieve more, it is only a matter of time before 3D food printing make its way into homes, perhaps even replacing regular home cooking. Until then, keep an eye out for this new kid on the block and wow not just your tummies, but also your eyes!

Skincare for
Tips Teens Dealing with multiple stressful skin conditions as a teenager can be annoying. Therefore, skincare for teens is the first step in their journey towards healthy and beautiful skin.
T
eenage is the threshold of adulthood, and it is a stage in which the youth are conscious not only about their emotions but also their appearance. This is the time they experiment with makeup and skincare, as they are sensitive to skin issues occurring due to adolescence, hormonal changes, and modern living and eating habits. However, it is never too late to start with a good skincare routine and maintain flawless skin. Here is some helpful information and tips that will help you maintain clear skin year-round.
SKIN TYPE
First things first, identify your skin type! Knowing your skin type correctly is crucial for developing the perfect skincare routine. Skin types can be oily, normal, dry, sensitive, or combination of these, determined by the amount of sebum produced by your skin. Sebum is the oily, waxy substance produced by your body’s sebaceous glands. It coats, moisturises, and protects your skin. •
Normal skin is even toned, neither oily nor dry, and has barely visible pores. It has a balanced sebum production that keeps the skin healthy. • Oily skin is acne-prone with visible pores and a shiny surface. This type of skin produces excessive sebum, which may sometimes lead to clogged pores. • Dry skin is dull, patchy, parched, and sometimes itchy. Lack of sebum production and dehydration may also result in dry and flaky skin. • Sensitive skin is when your skin has strong reactions to chemicals, dyes, and fragrances present in products that come into contact with the skin, making it look angry. • Combination skin is when you have a mix of both oily and dry skin People with a combination skin type often experience an oily T-zone, which includes the forehead and nose. The cheeks and chin remain dry.

SKINCARE ROUTINE
The following four basic steps are the basis for any skincare routine and can be customised as per the requirements of your skin type. 3. Moisturising: The next step is to moisturise your skin with a hydrating and nourishing, light moisturiser, even if you have oily skin. A moisturiser locks in all the moisture, keeping your skin healthy and preventing dryness.
1. Cleansing: Any beauty routine should always start with cleansing. No matter what your skin type is, choose a cleanser with mild ingredients that will not rip off the essential oils from your skin. Use a gentle foam-based cleanser in the morning and at night use an oil-based cleanser to get rid of the excessive sweat, makeup, dirt, or grime from the skin. 2. Toning: Once your face is clean, follow it up with toning, using a good quality mild toner. The toner cleans and closes the pores and rejuvenates the skin.
4. Sunscreen: The final step in your skin care is to wear sunscreen. Whether rain or shine, wearing sunscreen is a habit you must develop in order to protect the skin from the harsh UV rays of the sun. Choose the right SPF depending on your activities; if you stay outdoors often, use sunscreen with SPF more than 35. If you spend most of your time indoors, then sunscreen with an SPF of 15 is enough.

LOOK GOOD ACNE CONTROL
Besides the above skincare routine, teenagers also need to pay attention to the following for Acne Control, which is a common problem with teens: • Control oil: Since your skin is producing sebum in excess, you will want to keep down the shine without being harsh on your skin. If you are buying teen skin products for acne over the counter, be sure to read labels. Skin products that contain salicylic acid can help reduce oil. Benzoyl peroxide is another acne-fighting ingredient that works effectively but can be irritating to sensitive skin. • Exfoliate: You need to exfoliate only once or twice a week with a relatively gentle product. Do not scrub hard and do not over-exfoliate. • Get the right acne products: If you have breakouts, try this approach: Wash your skin, use a toner, and then apply a medicated acne gel. • Do not share makeup: It may be very tempting to try your friend’s perfect new eye liner or that lipstick, but it is a bad idea to share eye and lip products. Be smart and get your own instead, as doing so is far more hygienic. • Keep your hands clean: You have no idea how many times we touch our face in a day. Therefore, the best way to help your skin stay healthy is to protect it from dirt and germs. Wash your hands before you touch your face or touch up your makeup and regularly clean surfaces that touch your skin, such as your phone.
• Choose the right hair products: If you have frequent breakouts near your hairline, it is possible that your hair product is causing the damage. Switch to spray hair products and use them away from your face. • Skip the home remedies: Do not subject your skin to home remedies to control acne, like applying toothpaste on your skin. This may just make your skin worse if you are allergic to the ingredients. Use a good anti-spot product to apply on individual spots overnight. • Talk to a doctor: Seeing a dermatologist about acne can make a huge difference, especially if you have red, pusfilled pimples or large lumps under the skin that are painful or leaving scars. These scars can stay with you for a lifetime. You might benefit from prescription cleansers and acne medication that can clear skin faster and more effectively than over-the-counter products. • Maintain a healthy diet: Teenagers love to eat junk food which makes it difficult to maintain clear and healthy skin. It is a known fact that acne prone teenagers are likely to break out if they do not eat a balanced diet. Therefore, maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Drink plenty of water, include fruits and vegetables and cut back on the sodas and sweets. Being a teen should be fun. Take charge of your skin care with these tips, and soon a clear complexion will put a smile back on your face

Maskne, the MaskInduced Acne Is Real Maskne is the new acne caused by masks; here is what is causing it and how you can prevent it…
W
e all hate it, but we cannot avoid it. Wearing a mask is the new normal, the new way of life around the world. And we are all still adjusting to it! But it does not have to be such a dismal way of life. Remember, the mask protects us from the spreading coronavirus. But for many wearing a mask all the time comes with an unexpected side effect, especially for people with sensitive skin – Maskne, or mask-induced acne. Maskne has always been an issue with professionals who must wear a mask regularly, but now that everyone is wearing masks, the incidence of maskne has certainly increased. The medical term for “maskne” is acne mechanica, a skin condition brought on by prolonged wear of facial personal protective equipment (PPE). Masks tend to impose heat, friction, and occlusion on the skin. Pores get clogged and become pimples or acne cysts and when combined with a moist environment from breathing, talking, or sweating, it leads to dry, itchy, and raw skin or breakouts. Here are some tips to avoid maskne and keep your skin clear by taking your skin care regimen up a notch in a few ways.
Material matters
Choose the right material mask. Commercial face masks are pre-treated
with disinfecting chemicals which may cause a breakout if the skin is allergic to it, similarly with some synthetic fabric masks. Therefore, select a mask made from soft, breathable cotton or natural fibre so that there isn’t much sweat accumulating underneath. Or even splurge on a satin or silk one, which is less likely to irritate the skin. Colton mask pic in folder
Fit the mask properly
An important part of wearing a mask properly is ensuring that it fits the face and covers both the nose and mouth. Masks with ties can be easier to adjust to the size and shape of the face. A bendable piece across the bridge of the nose can help ensure a good fit and keep the mask from fogging up glasses, but it can also chafe the nose if it is not cushioned by fabric.
Wash masks regularly
Oil, nasal mucus, saliva and sweat can get on your face mask wherever it touches your face. Similarly, remember laundering washable masks with heavily scented detergents or softeners can cause itching, redness, or rashes. Wash your mask with a gentle, unscented, antibacterial soap after every use and make sure it is completely dry before you wear it again. Store your fresh masks in a bag to keep them clean.
Wash your face first
Remember the face should always be clean before and after you put on your mask. Use a gentle cleanser that is free of fragrance and oil and rinse with lukewarm water. This prevents dirt and oil from being trapped on the skin surface, which can cause breakouts. In case of acne or breakouts, use a glycolic acid wash.
Apply a moisturiser
Not only will this keep the skin hydrated, it will also act as a barrier between the face and the mask, reducing friction. Apply onto a cleansed face before and after wearing a mask. Look for moisturisers that contain ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or dimethicone, which will provide extra protection. Take care to avoid fragrances amongst other common contact allergens. In case of acne or breakouts use a light “non-comedogenic” moisturiser to your pre-mask regimen.
Take a break from makeup
Since no one will see the lower half of your face, it is a perfect time to skip makeup or anything that will clog the pores or aggravate acne or other skin lesions. Besides makeup residue will also soil the mask. Most of the maskne will be controlled if these tips are followed and a proper healthy skincare routine is maintained. If the skin does not clear up after trying everything, it may be time to talk to a dermatologist for a proper skin treatment plan

Spectacular Views of Salmah Plateau One for adventurous off-road enthusiasts, Salmah Plateau offers a challenging drive, spectacular views, great trekking opportunities, cultural sites to visit, and is home to one of the largest caves in the world – Majlis Al Jinn
T
he Salmah Plateau is located in the Eastern Hajar Mountains around 160 kilometres from Muscat. It is a 30 square kilometre elevated shoulder of Eocene Limestone that, at first glance, seems mostly devoid of vegetation, giving it and the surrounding mountains a desolate feel. However, the mountains, together with the coastal area beneath, are ripe with opportunities for both land and sea activities including caving, trekking, mountain biking, swimming, windsurfing, fishing, camping, wadi exploring, and more. Travelling down the coastal highway towards Sur, you will notice several roads around Tiwi that zigzag up the mountainside and into the clouds, many of which make for great 4WD excursions. Two of these tracks give you access to the Salmah Plateau. The plateau is a semi-arid, undulating mountain top, that is home to spectacular karst features including the Salma Plateau Cave System, which at 11.5 kilometres long and 380 metres deep is the longest in Oman. In addition to the cave system, the plateau is also home to the world famous Majlis Al Jinn, one of the largest cave chambers in the world.
Majlis Al Jinn
Majlis Al Jinn is located in a relatively remote area of the Salmah plateau at an elevation of around 1,300 m above sea level. At approx 340 meters long, 250 meters wide, 180 metres deep and with a volume in excess of four million cubic meters, the cave chamber is simply enormous. The cave is located some 40m beneath the surface of the plateau and can only be accessed by abseiling down one of three vertical shafts, known locally as Khoshilat Maqandeli, Khoshilat

Don Davison, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl S. Jones when carrying out a Karst Research Program. Exploration of the cave began later that same month when Don rappelled down the 118m Khoshilat Maqandeli entrance.
Don and Cheryl eventually surveyed and photographed the cave in April and May, 1985. At the time, the Omanis living on the plateau didn’t have a name for the cave but believed that Jinn lived in the cave. Prehistoric Tower Tombs of Jaylah Besides its cave systems, the plateau also has significant cultural heritage features, such as the numerous tower tombs, including those at Jaylah on the western edge. To reach them, you need to continue on your track past the entrances to Majlis al Jinn, and reach the village of Qurun, which is nestled next to a wadi. Besides the one you used, the village has two other exits, the one to the south leads you to the second path up the plateau while the exit from the back leads to the Tower Tombs of Jaylah and the third access point to the plateau, that connects it to Ibra. These Tower Tombs date all the way back to the bronze age. They were initially discovered in the early 90’s by archaeologist Paul Alan Yule from aerial photographs published in the book ‘A Day Above Oman’, by John Nowell. He, together with Gerd Weisgerber and help from the German Omani Association, went on to eventually document, and map the site, as well as excavate and completely restore at least one of the tombs in 1995. The site itself comprises over 90 tombs spread out over a large area. There are several different types of tombs with some as high as eight metres in height and seven metres in diameter. While most are inaccessible by car, many are right next to the trail making them easy to visit. Given that most of these are well over 3,000 years old they are certainly a sight to behold. Aside from caving and cultural site visits, the plateau also offers unmatched views of the shore and the turquoise waters beyond. Camping overnight near the cliff side will treat you to a breathtakingly beautiful sunrise. The view alone is worth the trip up the plateau

Lucerne The Medieval Swiss Delight Located on the north shore of Lake Lucerne, where the River Reuss flows out of the lake, lies the quintessential romantic Swiss getaway – the beautiful town of Lucerne
P
opular with nearly every tourist that visits the country, Lucerne, or Luzern as it is known in German, is the capital of the canton of Lucerne, the Swiss-German speaking part of central Switzerland. The City is known primarily for its stunning medieval architecture and breathtaking location at the base of some of the most spectacular snowcapped Alpine peaks in Europe, Mt. Rigi, Mt. Pilatus, Mt. Titlis, and Jungfraujoch.
Lucerne is relatively small and easy to explore, with most attractions within easy walking distance of the rail network. The City itself is only an hour’s train ride from the Zurich airport, and with the Swiss Travel Pass allowing for unlimited travel on trains, buses, and boats, as well as discounts on mountain railways, getting around is a cinch. The town itself has much to offer, with some of the most the most spectacular Alpine rides just on the outskirts of the city. However, we will leave those for a later date; here we will focus on six of the most stunning attractions you can find within the city of Lucerne.
Old Town
The Old Town of Lucerne, located on the right bank of the Reuss, is a great spot to start your sightseeing tour of Lucerne. It is the historic core of the city and will treat your eyes to beautiful painted facades and oriental windows of perfectly preserved medieval buildings, cobblestone streets, and an attractive square, Weinmarkt. The shops and boutiques that populate the Old Town make it a great place to come for a little bit of shopping. It is also where you will find some of the best restaurants and cafes in the city.
Chapel Bridge
Stepping toward the banks of the river in Old Town, you will find what is easily the most characteristic sight in Lucerne - the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke). Built in 1333, this medieval wooden footbridge is the oldest surviving truss bridge in the world and the icon of Lucerne. It runs diagonally for 200 metres, crossing the Reuss River and linking the Old Town with the right bank. The bridge was nearly destroyed in a fire in 1993 but was completely restored. However, some of the fire damage can still be seen on the remaining 17th century pictorial panels that can be found under the eaves the bridge. The bridge itself, adorned with flowers in the summer months and snow in the winter, is simply stunning to behold and makes for a great photo opportunity. Beside the bridge is the octagonal Wasserturm, a 34-metre-high 13th-century water tower which was once part of the town’s fortifications.

Lake Lucerne
Known as Vierwaldstattersee in German, which translates to Lake of the Four Forest Cantons, Lake Lucerne is a stunning body of water 38 kilometres long. As the name implies, it is surrounded by four cantons – Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and Lucerne. There are several boats and yachts that can take you on panoramic sightseeing cruises of the lake. If you are visiting Lucerne between May to September, you could even catch an early-20th century paddle steamer. They even offer crossings from Lucerne to Flüelen complete with full three-course meals abord the ship salon, should you feel so inclined.
Jesuit Church
Situated on the southern bank of the River Reuss, is the famous Jesuit Church of Lucerne with its twin onion-domed towers dominating the skyline. Built from 1666 to 1673 and consecrated in 1677, this was the first large Baroque style church to be built in Switzerland. When it first opened, the interior of the church wasn’t quite complete. It was eventually updated to the Rococo style in 1750, with an outstanding painted ceiling and ornate faux marble side altars. The church also holds concerts on its magnificent organ, so it may be worth your while to check the schedule and time a visit accordingly.
Lion Monument
Another of the Lucerne top attractions is the Lion Monument of Lucerne. Located just north of Löwenplatz, the monument is a large rock relief designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in by Lukas Ahorn in 1820. The monument commemorates the death of 26 officers and over 700 soldiers who were killed while protecting King Louis XVI during the attack on the Tuileries in the French Revolution in 1792. It portrays a dying lion impaled by a spear, covering a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis of the French monarchy; beside him is another shield bearing the coat of arms of Switzerland. The inscription below the sculpture lists the names of the officers and gives the approximate numbers of soldiers who died and survived.
Glacier Garden
Located near the Lion Monument is a remarkably interesting natural attraction that was formed during the ice age called the Glacier Garden. It was first discovered in 1872 and consists of polished glacier rock, erratic boulders dropped by the retreating ice, and a group of 32 potholes which were formed at the base of waterfalls of melting glacial ice. At the Glacier Garden you will also find 20-million-yearold fossils of shellfish and palm fronds. Located at the Garden are also interactive exhibits explaining the impact of climate change and the famous Alhambra mirror maze, made with 90 mirrors and dating back to 1896. Higher up is an observation tower that will treat you to stunning views of Lucerne and Mount Pilatus in the background

Romantic partners influence each other’s goals
The research team from the University of Basel’s Faculty of Psychology wanted to examine the short- and long-term interdependence of approach goals and avoidance goals within couples. The participants reported whether they had tried to avoid conflicts or share meaningful experiences with their partner that day. This was followed by an analysis of how the information affected the goals of the partner.
The study, which included over 450 couples, found that over the long-term, what one partner in a two-person relationship wishes to avoid, so too does the other partner – and what one wants to achieve, so does the other. These effects can be observed regardless of gender, age, and length of the relationship.
Recharging N95 masks for continued usage N95 masks are a critical part of the personal protective equipment used by front-line health care workers. These masks achieve 95% efficiency at filtering out tiny 0.3-micron particles, while maintaining reasonable breathability, thanks to a layer of fine melt-blown polypropylene fibres incorporating electrical charges to attract particles.
Extended usage and decontamination provoked by severe supply shortages around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic can easily remove the charges and degrade filtration efficiency. This is because, extended use and decontamination gives rise to very humid conditions, and humidity is detrimental to electrostatics. In the journal Physics of Fluids, from AIP Publishing, researchers from India’s Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and Israel’s Technion-IIT share a method to restore the filtration efficiency of N95 masks to out-of-box levels – as long as the mask is not structurally compromised. The researchers discovered they could toss an N95 into a standard washing machine to clean it, which significantly reduces its filtration efficiency. They could then recharge it by sandwiching it between two electrodes at high voltage to recover its 95% efficiency. The group believes its method to keep masks charged will lead to highly energy-efficient smart masks. Beyond this, their method will be useful for a variety of air filtration applications, such as HVAC or industrial filters.
Inequality of opportunity drags down everyone’s motivation In a study conducted by the University College London, researchers found that large disparities in rewards offered for the same task reduce people’s happiness, which in turn reduce their willingness to work. For the study, 810 participants were asked to complete a simple task in exchange for varying degrees of payment, and were informed as such. The findings showed that a large disparity in rewards brought about greater unhappiness, which was in turn associated with lower willingness to work. People were also more likely to refuse to work in an unfair scenario, even if they would benefit. The researchers speculate that the negative feelings caused by arbitrary disparities may in part explain why disadvantaged people are more likely to experience anxiety and depression.

Researchers Redesign the Face Mask to Improve Comfort and Protection Imagine a reusable face mask that protects wearers and those around them from SARS-CoV-2, but is comfortable enough to wear all day, and stays in place without frequent adjustment. Based on decades of experience with filtration and textile materials, Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have designed a new mask intended to do just that – and are providing the plans so individuals and manufacturers can make it. The fundamental flaw in existing reusable cloth masks is that they – unlike N95 respirators, which are fitted for individual users – leak air around the edges, bypassing their filtration mechanism. To address the issue, researchers created a two-part mask that fastens behind the head. The front part – the barrier component – contains the filtration material and is contoured to fit tightly while allowing space ahead of the nose and mouth to avoid breathing restrictions and permit unrestricted speech. Made from the kind of moisture-wicking material used in athletic clothing, it includes a pocket into which a filter can be inserted to increase the filtration efficiency and thereby increase protection. The washable fabric filter is made of a blend of Spandex and polyester. The second part of the mask is fashioned from stretchable material. The stretchable part, which has holes for the ears to help position the mask, holds the front portion in place and fastens with conventional hook and eyelet hardware, a mechanism that has been used in clothing for centuries.
New glove-like device mimics sense of touch
What if you could touch a loved one during a video call – particularly in today’s social distancing era of COVID-19 – or pick up and handle a virtual tool in a video game? Pending user tests and funding to commercialise the new technology, these ideas could become reality in a couple of years after UNSW Sydney engineers developed a new haptic device which recreates the sense of touch. Dr Thanh Nho Do, Scientia Lecturer and UNSW Medical Robotics Lab director, is senior author of a study featuring the new device. His research team featured lead author and PhD candidate Mai Thanh Thai, Phuoc Thien Phan, Trung Thien Hoang and collaborator Scientia Professor Nigel Lovell, Head of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering.
Dr Do said the sense of touch was something many people took for granted to perform everyday tasks. “There are many situations where the sense of touch would be useful but is impossible: for example, in a telehealth consultation a doctor is unable to physically examine a patient. So, we aimed to solve this problem.”

Are You Working Out Hard Enough?
You are maintaining a committed workout schedule, but does it mean that you are working out hard enough? To determine whether you are putting enough in your workout, here are some signs to look out for that show you had a good workout
W
e all know that working out is beneficial for your overall health. Exercising lowers heart attack risk and prevents other issues like obesity and diabetes, etc. But how do you know if you’re working out hard enough? It is definitely not sweat or sore muscles! Many people think sweat is a good indicator of a good workout. That’s not the case because not everyone sweats profusely. Sweating varies for each individual. It depends upon your hydration level, genetics, temperature, and the type of workout you are doing. Sore muscles on the other hand are generally noticed when you start a new workout program. However, it is not an indication that you have worked out hard enough. Muscle soreness is a sign of getting stronger but it will disappear as soon as your muscles adapt to a new exercise routine. Some more obvious signs that your training has been hard and you have pushed your body to its limits are you being out of breath, your heart pumping out of your chest, and you absolutely have no energy for another set or rep. However, here are a few more indicators to gauge if you are working out hard enough.
The Talk Test
Try the talk test next time you are wondering whether your workout is working or not. If you find it difficult to speak mid-workout or tend to answer in short one to two-word grunts, as opposed to complete sentences, then it means you are working out at least moderately hard.

You hit your number
An accurate way to define intensity of a workout is to determine what your maximum is and work at a percentage of that. For any cardio you will want to know your heart rate max which you can calculate using the formula – 206.9 - (0.67 x age). You will need to work out at an intensity of 80 to 90 percent of your max. For resistance training, finding your one-repetition max (maximum amount of weight that a person can possibly lift/push for one repetition) and doing three sets of five to eight reps at 80 to 90 percent of that limit.
You struggle to finish the last rep
Ideally, the final few reps should be a real effort, which is a sign of muscle fatigue. So, if you are struggling with the last two reps and still pushing yourself then you have had a successful workout session.
You are all invigorated, not wiped out
When you finish an effective workout, you should feel that you pushed yourself, but you shouldn’t be so drained that you are depleted – a good workout will leave you feeling like you still have energy to take the day on.
Your muscles pump
After a strenuous workout especially resistance training session, excess blood is pumped to the muscles you just worked to bring in oxygen and nutrients and wash out metabolic byproducts (like lactic acid) and toxins. This causes the muscles to swell and temporarily become larger. This effect lasts for about two hours.
You sleep soundly
After a good workout, you should sleep soundly without any disruptions in the night. This has to do with the hormones and proteins released into your system during exercise that react to regulate sleep.
You notice changes in your body
Ultimately, you are working out hard enough if you see positive responses from your body. The first and most important change to measure is your strength. If you get stronger all your body composition and athletic goals have a greater chance of being achieved and maintained. You will also feel great and have more energy.

Path to Success
Make your dreams a reality and drive your business to success by just following these simple tips
S
uccess in the real world is a dream to many, but a true goal to only a few. Only those who set their heart and soul towards realising their dream will see it become a reality. Youngblood, high energy, and a focused mindset has kickstarted the journey of many a young entrepreneur, but do you know how to maintain that momentum? Here are a few friendly tips to help you get started as well as to keep moving steadily towards your ultimate goal.
Do what you love, Love what you do
A rather cliché, yet winning piece of advice. Venturing into new waters is already a risky business. Not having the heart for what you’re doing takes out the sense of challenge and adventure from your journey. You’re eventually going to get bored. When you do something new, make sure it’s something you love. Something that excites you will make you want to keep working because it means so much to you. No young entrepreneur should get stuck in a regular nine-to-five cycle. Do what you love, do it your way, with a touch of risk, a pinch of fun, and a whole lot of love.
Plan, Plan, and Plan!
Although it is quite often said, ‘expect the unexpected,’ we know how quickly that can go sideways. But what if you did the ‘expecting’ bit? It all comes down to planning. Knowing where to start, how to proceed, and when to evolve are all stages that you need to set on a practical and achievable timeline. It’s just a road map to not lose focus. It will help you stay on track and buzz you when things don’t seem to go right, so you can make a call to action, or just modify the plan for the new bumps and developments. However you choose to plan the path ahead, you can proceed with confidence knowing you won’t get lost.
Know your market
In any business, we know, “Customer is King.” Without your customers, you have no business, and most importantly, no purpose to keep going. The market is ever-changing and advancing fast. Understanding your target audience is essential for the success of any business. It helps you run your business more efficiently, you will need to find out what they want, and what they need. Relate to them, adapt, and listen. Your audience needs to trust you and you need to evolve and grow as per the trends that satisfy your customers.

Team Up and Educate Yourself
Jack of all trades, master of none; that’s not what builds or leads a successful business. While you may be the creative genius, and the one from where the idea stems, you need to have a team of individuals who understand your vision and want to get on board. Learn more about the various aspects involved in entrepreneurship. Then start hiring people who can fill up your shortcomings and enhances your strengths. A team of skilled individuals who can handle their roles and responsibilities is the best asset a company can get. Just remember to educate, delegate, and appreciate!
Stop Selling. Start Solving
With various competitive businesses in the market, it is very easy to get on the bandwagon of selling products by revamping them. But do your customers need more variants of the same products? Or would they prefer solutions for problems that they cannot find products for? For a young entrepreneur, problems equals opportunities. So, be authentic. Innovate. Talk to people around you and find out what they’re struggling
with. Challenge yourself to be creative and grow your business based on the need of the hour.
Grow your network
There are many ways you can build a strong group of connections. It is important that you are open to learning from people who have walked this path before and even those that are new. You need to have a group of people that can vouch for you, help you when you struggle, and publicly appreciate you when you do well to help grow your business. A strong network makes it difficult to fail, and if you do fail, it motivates you to get back up and hit refresh!
Take a Breath. Just Relax
When you own a business, you got to lead by example. This means knowing that it’s okay to hit pause and reassuring yourself and your team that a break is meant to revive yourself to carry on. You might be young, energetic, and full of life. But overworking yourself is just not an option. Work hard, but also work smart. Do not fuss about small setbacks. Just take a step back and think with a clear mind. Celebrate the smallest wins. And hop back in when you know you’re good to go!

AT HOME
W
orking from home offers several advantages, such as giving you complete freedom and flexibility to set up your own schedule, minimising your overheads, saving time and money by eliminating your daily commute, and more. Working at home, however, can also bring with it a lot of distractions. That being said, a bit of smart planning and effort can go a long way in reducing these distractions and maximising your efficiency and productivity. Here are a few simple tips and tricks to make sure you succeed in your home office endeavour.
Design Your Own Home Office
Choosing Your Office Space
Your first step to setting up your home office is to understand the importance of keeping your personal life from spilling over into your business life and vice versa. It is vital to find a space that is quiet and allows you some privacy. This is especially true if you live in a house with children or pets. If your business involves meeting with clients, it may even be worth it to find a place that is independent of the house or close to the entrance. Take your equipment into account as well, especially if you require a dedicated studio to spread out designs or tech equipment.
Starting your own home business is the ideal dream job for many of us and is an ideal way to have the freedom to be your own boss. We are here to help you kick start that dream by helping you design and set-up your very own home office good lighting, another proven way to improve productivity is keeping a plant or two in your workspace.
Your Desk and a Clear Workspace
Most home offices involve a personal desk. There are quite a few options out there and what you get just comes down to your personal preference or your line of work. There are traditional work desks, L-Shaped Desks for maximising space, desks with integrated bookshelves, dedicated computer desks, and even adjustable desks if you don’t want
Light it Up
Natural light is your best friend here. It been proven that having exposure to natural light will help boost your productivity and improve your vision. Moreover, there is a strong correlation between daylight exposure in the workplace and your quality of sleep, mental health, visual acuity, productivity, and physical health. Try and set yourself up in such a way as to maximise the natural light in your workplace. If this isn’t possible, or the room you have selected is lacking windows or natural light, try and invest in full-spectrum bulbs. While they may be more expensive than regular bulbs, they do a fairly good job or replicating sunlight and are the next best thing to a large window. You can supplement these with floor or desk lamps when needed. In addition to
56 FACES August 2020
AT HOME to sit all day. Whatever you decide to go for, you need to make sure that your desk has a large enough empty area for you to work in comfort. Clutter on your desk can negatively affect both your productivity and motivation.
Your Chair
Sitting for long periods of time adds stress to your spine and can cause you to suffer from back problems in the long run. It is therefore critical to use a chair that adequately supports your body helps you maintain a proper posture. As with desks, there are several options available to you at various price points, materials, and options. What is important is to get one that is ergonomic and has a high-quality seat cushion. A great alternative to standard office chairs are high quality gaming chairs. Most top gaming chair brands design their chairs specifically for long gaming sessions and are therefore built to be comfortable and last for years to come. Brands such as DXRacer, Secretlab, Noblechairs, and Vertagear, are known for making extremely high-quality chairs at relatively reasonable prices.
Set Up an Independent Network
While working at home can reduce overheads, one area worth investing in is an independent phone and network. In doing so, you eliminate the risk of having a child or other family member answer the phone and can always keep your interactions with clients professional. Having an independent internet line will also help ensure you operate without interruptions of any kind. Most homes in Oman can run at least two network lines which allows you to run a completely independent network for your office with it’s own dedicated telephone number; make use of it.
Other Things to Consider
• A fast PC – an older or slower PC can drastically affect your productivity. It is well worth investing in a decently modern PC and keep it dedicated for your office work. • Invest in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) – a UPS can be invaluable asset for your home office. It can ensure that your work is kept safe even if the power goes out by giving you ample time to save your work and shut down your devices safely.
• Storage – ensure you have example storage for all your official documents and paperwork. Use these to ensure everything is well organised and kept clean.
• A clock – not just to keep yourself on a proper schedule but to also ensure you don’t overwork yourself.
• Fire-Safe Box – Fires are always a risk no matter where you stay. A Fire-Safe Box will ensure your valuable documents are kept safe even in the event of an unexpected fire.

Stay Motivated When you set off to start your own personal business endeavour, staying constantly motivated can be one of the biggest difficulties you face. Here are just a few steps you can take to overcome this hurdle and ensure success
H
ow many times have you started a project and never followed it through to its end? How many times have you taken another jab at a previously failed endeavour? For most of us its quite a few. What do you do if you find yourself in such a situation? How do you stay motivated?
At its heart, the answer to that question is yourself, or rather self-motivation. This isn’t necessarily as easy as it sounds. There are however things that you can do that can help in a big way. Here are few steps you can take to get yourself motivated again.
Build a Business Around Your Passion
If you try and work in an industry that bores you, it will be hard for you to find the motivation you need to succeed. This is because you aren’t passionate about what you are doing. Therefore, it is vital to build your career and business around something you genuinely love. By doing so, you can literally wake up every morning motivated simply because you love what you do and you get to share it with like-minded people, be it fellow colleague or customers. While you still run a risk of eventual burnout, especially if what you do is repetitive, you won’t really have to dig too far to get your motivation back.
Always Establish Short-Term and Long-Term Goals Together with a Personal Reward System
The key to success and staying motivated is clearly defined and manageable goals. Not only do they give you something to work towards, defined goals give your ideas a focused direction and serves as a vital step between planning and execution. A good practice is to purchase a whiteboard and place it in a prominent location in your office. List down each of your short and long-term goals; crossing out each one as you complete them. This way, your goals literally stare you in the face on a daily basis. This constant visualisation will keep you focused on your goals as well as provides a broad view of your progress so far.
58 FACES August 2020
Another great way to stay motivated is to set up a reward scheme for yourself. Tie up each of your goals to a reward proportional to the task at hand and add them to your list. These can be as simple as a treating yourself to meal you really like or maybe even a holiday you always wanted to take or the car of your dreams at one of the larger milestones. Setting clearly defined goals will help you monitor your progress and the rewards at each milestone will provide you with constant motivation.
RELATIVELY SPEAKING
Lay Out a Plan
A vision without a plan is nothing but a dream. Once you have your goals and rewards in place, a plan is what will help take your targets and overall vision and break it down into the steps you need to get it done. Set a clearly defined, yet achievable, time limit for each activity, together with the time required to assemble your resources and materials required. This will give you a direction to focus on, a clearly defined path and time frame, and a goal. Another important factor is distractions. Avoid these at all costs. Keep your workplace uncluttered and stay organised. Create a calming environment to give yourself the best chance of success.
Stay Optimistic and Committed to the End Goal If you want to succeed, you must create a clear compelling vision, something that you can relate to and resonate with. Creating a mental image of you succeeding is a powerful phycological technique that can make even the worst of tasks feel like part of achieving something grander.
Things won’t always go your way and there are chances a task or goal can fail. However, remember that failure can be your best teacher. Some of the greatest discoveries in history have been made on the backs of previously failed attempts. Furthermore, staying optimistic at all times keeps your focus on just the positive aspects of your endeavour and helps you stay motivated towards achieving your ultimate goal. Positive thoughts always lead to positive actions, and selfaffirming statements will help you to achieve your best. The minute you start to bring negative thoughts in, you will see your forward momentum immediately come to a screeching halt. Take control of how you think, how you feel, how you act. Never let emotions and negativity cloud your judgment.
And if you ever fail, just pick yourself back up and look at your task with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. Remember, all that’s happened is you found an approach that does not work, and all you need is a new approach that does.
Get in the zone
One of the most important things you need to do once you set out on a task is to starve yourself of all distractions. Rid yourself of everything you know that gets you distracted. Create an environment that will help you maximise your efficiency and productivity and get “in the zone”. And once you get started, don’t stop until your task is done. Also, avoid multitasking. Doing so forces you to divide your attention. Just stay focused on one task till it is done to maximise your chances of success

They represent the ultra-modern fulfilment of the brand’s racing promise, which in the 1960’s came up with the concept of a sporty luxury sedan model. Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo represent a further evolution of the sedan, destiny’s children sporting carbon-fibre inserts. And they are also immune to kryptonite.

P
roject Power is the latest superhero movie on Netflix written by Mattson Tomlin of Batman fame. The movie takes place in New Orleans and features an interesting premise where a new drug called Power has hit the streets. Unlike most other super movies in the genre where people are permanently blessed or cursed with their powers, in Project Power people who take the pill are gifted supernatural abilities for just five minutes per hit. However, there is a catch. No one knows what latent power they have lying inside them until they take the pill for the first time and there is a chance the pill, or the power they unlock, could kill them. It is certainly an interesting twist on the usual superhero premise.
The movie also features a solid main cast of characters; starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Frank Shaver, a police officer who sees it as justified to take the dug himself for the purpose of stopping its spread; Dominique Fishback as a teenager dealer/student Robin, who works with Frank to stop the spread of the drug on the streets; and Jamie Foxx as Art, a former U.S. Ranger who is in search of his missing daughter.
Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who are best known for co-directing a number of Paranormal Activity movies and Nerve, Project Power offers up an interested premise and a great cast. It even makes the most of its USD85 million budget with some truly impressive visuals. However, the movie plays it far to safe. It never takes any chances or offers up anything special. The pacing is decent but never ramps up, the story while interesting, never takes any risks or offers up any interesting twists, and even the ending, while visually impressive, is very “by the book”. That is not to say the movie is bad in any way – the visuals are impressive, the pacing is decent, and the acting is solid. But when taken as a whole, just feels average. It is an interesting watch, and it has its moments, but it does nothing to stay memorable or draw you in for a second viewing. There is nothing in it that will stop you from enjoying the film, and is definitely worth at least one watch. It just feels rather disappointing given how good the actual setting of the movie was. Project Power is available to watch on Netflix.

Turns out, the jeweller sold them the dummy demo of the ring that was worth GBP 10 at most. Worse still, she had even had the ring serviced during that time.
