NIAGARA POLO Saturday, September 10 • Gates open at 11 am Whether referred to as the Fort George Military Reserve, Niagara Plain, The Green, The Garrison Common, or simply as “The Commons”, this 285-acre area of land has been an integral part of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s history. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries it housed the Indian Council House, and during two world wars up to 20,000 soldiers assembled and trained here to be shipped overseas. The Commons was later given to Parks Canada after the Department of National Defense no longer needed the area for summer training camps. Beyond its military significance, locals used the land for hunting, harvesting crops, firewood, fairgrounds, and a place for their animals to graze. Today it is a National Historic Site and is used by residents and visitors as a green space and for special community events. On September 10th, 2016 join the Niagara Historical Society & Museum for NIAGARA POLO – a live sporting event on the Commons. Generously sponsored by the Town of Niagara-on-theLake and Peller Estates, Niagara Polo will feature two four-chukker games with players from the Toronto Polo

Club, traditional divot stomp with bubbly, half time entertainment by the Niagara Regional Police Pipe Band, a display of luxury and antique cars, food and drink vendors, and an artisans tent. For the general public, admission is $15 (free for children under 12) and for those who want a more elegant polo experience, VIP and corporate dining is available under a field-side marquee. All proceeds from this fundraiser support the Niagara Historical Society & Museum’s work in preserving, collecting and displaying the town’s unique history and will help support the future growth of the Museum. Discover the power and passion of polo on the historic Commons - the land on which officers and gentleman played polo over 100 years ago during military training at Niagara Camp. Vintage Fest Sunday, October 2 Butler’s Barracks Discover something new—and old—to love at The Commons Market, an Antique & Vintage Fest in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It’s a celebration of timeless craftsmanship, nostalgia, and most of all, the unique. Located on Parks Canada’s historic Butler’s Barracks site, the show draws antique and vintage dealers from across Ontario and Quebec, including some of Niagara’s very own. There’s a range of specialties, including primitive, rustic, mid-century, retro 70s and 80s, and industrial, and you’ll find everything from furniture and housewares to jewellery and collectibles. The Commons Market also features upcycle artisans, who rescue vintage bits and pieces and turn them into something new and wonderful. Their work ranges from funky industrial pieces to hand-bound books to home decor. But there’s more to The Commons Market than uncommon finds. We’ll be serving some of Niagara’s finest craft beers from The Exchange Brewery and Silversmith and local wines from Reif and Henry of Pelham. Brock’s Monument 160th Commemoration

Built between 1853-1856, Brock’s Monument towers over picturesque Queenston Heights, Ontario. The monument measures 56 metres (185 feet) in height and is the largest monument of its kind in Canada. Situated on the site of the Battle of Queenston Heights where British and American soldiers struggled for the destiny of two nations, Brock’s Monument is the final resting place of Major General Sir Isaac Brock and his Aide-de-Camp Lieutenant Colonel John Macdonell.

Join the Friends of Fort George and the Niagara Parks Commission on Thursday, Oct 13, as we commemorate the 160th anniversary of the building of Brock’s Monument. The afternoon will include a number of speakers, tea, coffee and light fare. The event will take place from 2 to 4 pm at the Laura Secord Church in Queenston, Ontario.

The Monument that stands at Queenston Heights today, is actually the second Monument built in honour of Canada’s saviour, Major General Brock. Construction of the first monument to Brock began on June 1, 1824. On October 13, 1824, Major General Sir Isaac Brock’s body was removed from the bastion at Fort George and interred under Brock’s Monument in a solemn event. Over 8,000 spectators gathered to watch the procession along the route from Fort George to Queenston. By 1827, the tower was completed and measured 40 metres in height. Throughout the 1820’s and 1830’s, the first Brock’s Monument became a popular tourist destination for early travellers to Upper Canada. On April 17, 1840, Brock’s Monument was severely damaged by a bomb set off at the base of the stairs. It was suspected that the charge was detonated by Benjamin Lett, an American sympathiser who was part of the Upper Canada Rebellion. The monument’s architect, Francis Hall, insisted that it could be restored. However, many felt that a new tower should be erected to highlight their respect for Brock, and the indignation they felt towards the vandalism. Construction on the second monument to Major General Sir Isaac Brock began in 1853. Designed by William Thomas, the Monument was built entirely out of Queenston limestone, measures 56 metres in height, and was opened to the public in 1859. Each year, thousands of visitors from around the world visit Brock’s Monument, learning about the early history of Canada, and the role Major General Sir Isaac Brock and the Battle of Queenston Heights had in shaping its destiny.

Butternut Squash Soup With Honey Ginger Balsamic & Basil Crème Fraiche

Thoughtfully-crafted by each chef, the rich variety of menu options allows everyone to celebrate the joys of local, seasonal artisan cuisine. Offering terrific value with Prix-Fixe 3-Course Menus consisting of an appetizer, main course and dessert, Fabulicious is a great opportunity to sample culinary delights from 14 local finedining establishments. Ingredients

• 1/4 Cup OLiV Butter Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) • 8 Cups Cubed Butternut Squash • 1 Red Bell Pepper, Seeded & Roughly Chopped

• 1 Medium Sweet Onion, Skinned & Roughly Chopped • 3 Cloves Garlic, Smashed & Peeled • 2 Litres Chicken or Vegetable Stock • 1/2 Litre Heavy Cream

Directions: 1. Add OLiV Butter EVOO, squash, red pepper, garlic, onion to a medium large stock pot & sauté over medium high heat stirring constantly for 5 – 7 minutes. 2. Add stock & raise heat to high. Cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour until all vegetables are very soft. 3. Remove from heat and puree until smooth and silky in texture. An immersion blender is the ideal tool, however, if you do not have one handy then a standard blender will work just fine. Please Note: If using a blender please puree in small batches on low power to avoid burns from splash over. 4. Return to low heat & slowly whisk in heavy cream. 5. Salt & Pepper to taste.

Crème Fraiche

1. 1 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt 2. 1/4 Cup OLiV Honey Ginger White Balsamic Vinegar 3. 2 Sprigs of Fresh Basil (Leaves Only – Finely Chopped). Blend Ingredients together and mix well. Set in Fridge for 3 – 6 hours

Serving:

Place a heaping Tbsp of Crème Fraiche in centre of bowl. Pour soup around crème in bowl & serve. Yield: 10 x 8oz servings

The Graveyard Shift at St. Mark’s Anglican Church The past four Septembers have seen a host of unusual visitors to the cemetery at St Mark’s Anglican Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. As dusk settles a trail of glowing lanterns can be seen, leading the way for the Gravedigger and his group of curious, yet wary,

visitors. The graveyard is one of the oldest in Ontario, and home to many distinct characters. And so, as the visitors cautiously explore, the Gravedigger introduces them to a few of these ‘residents’ - some a little more insistent upon sharing their stories than others.

The cemetery tours began in 2012, due to the support of the Niagara Culture Capital of Canada. Since then the Niagara Historical Museum’s Cemetery Tours at St Marks have become a popular choice for those interested in local history, told with a touch of dramatic flair. Researched by the Museum’s curator Sarah Maloney-Kaufman and then

transformed into an hour long theatrical experience by local producer and writer Barbara Worthy, these tours feature personalities that make up the character of Niagara on the Lake, from the infamous to the unknown. In past years, the Gravedigger has introduced characters as different as the much-venerated journalist and advocate Elizabeth Ascher, or the sculptor Jacobine Jones, to the neighbour who knew everyone’s business, Matilda Boulton. Many of the other colourful personalities whose vision left their mark on this town are featured, such as Henry Paffard, Joe Masters and Mary Henry. This fall, come and see whose stories will be coaxed out of the ancient marble and limestone. Join the Gravedigger as he introduces more of the residents of St Mark’s Graveyard, on Friday, September 23 & Saturday, September 24, then again Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, for three visits per night, at 6:00 pm, 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Ghost Walk Tours at Fort George

In addition to one of the most historic towns in Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake is commonly referred to as the most haunted. The most prevalent tales of paranormal activity surround Fort George National Historic Site. There have been hundreds of reports of paranormal sightings at Fort George, ranging from the benevolent spirit of a little girl named Sarah Ann to a more ominous presence simply known as “The Watcher”.
