FEBRUARY & MARCH 2022

VOLUME 13

From the General Manager Travis McCubbin, PGA/CMAA General Manager [email protected]

Exciting Upgrades! A new year has arrived and there has never has been a more exciting time in the history of Old Hawthorne. Our club is embarking on a multimillion dollar investment that will renovate current facilities along with adding other amenities for our members. Additionally, The Community of Old Hawthorne is expanding to the north and will provide 158 more beautiful homes in the near future. These two monumental changes along with other smaller investments will allow us to continue making Old Hawthorne the best place to live, work and play in the Columbia area.

Updates: Annual Report - Please keep an eye on your email for our Annual Report that will be released in the last week of February. This report will provide you an update on how 2021 went in all of our departments while providing updates for our upcoming membership year (April 2022 - March 2023). We will also have this report posted inside our club app and on our website. Project Update - I am sure many of you have noticed the construction activity going on around our pool area. We have some slight excavation to finish before the pool starts to take shape. We have also began to dig footings for our pool bar and are currently working with engineers for our fitness center expansion that will begin this summer. Let’s cross our fingers that the weather cooperates this spring. Staffing - As our club has grown the past 18 months, so has our need for new talented staff. This past fall our Food & Beverage staff grew with new front of the house managers, two new sous chefs and a pastry chef. This spring you will learn about a new golf professional and merchandiser in the golf shop. As the pool grows this summer we will be expanding our staff in this area also. And finally, as our fitness center grows we will also be looking to expand our staff there too. This staffing growth is due not only to our increased volume of usage in each area, but it is also our ongoing focus on creating a better member experience. Old Hawthorne North - What a start we have seen in regards to Old Hawthorne North! We have approximately 131 of the 158 lots under contract. Currently, 24 of the 43 estate lots are still available. Grading will begin in approximately 30 days.

Challenge for 2022: Lastly, I would like to leave you with a challenge for 2022. Over the years I have seen many members become extremely engaged in many (or all!) of the activities around the club. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Social member or a full golf member, you will always receive way more than the dues dollars you pay monthly if you will immerse yourself in the club in some way. There are many opportunities for you to become involved at a deeper level in all of our amenities through programming, events and instruction. Just take a step out of your box this year and try something else that you have not done yet. I am confident enough to say that we might just make it worth your while!

VOLUME 13

From the AGM Mary Beth Darr Assistant General Manager [email protected]

Leaving ForeTees... We are anxiously anticipating rolling out our new Club software and point-of-sales system, Club Essential, in the beginning of March. While we have had a great experience with ForeTees event and athletic reservation systems, we switched to their allencompassing suite a little over two years ago, and have unfortunately been left wanting. From numerous member billing issues, to frustrating policies and lack-ofabilities, we have made the decision to move our entire operating system to Club Essential beginning shortly. We are hopeful that this system will prove to be easier to interpret and use for our members, and that it will also be more efficient for our staff. Club Essentials currently serves over 1300 clubs and provides access to over 2 million members, so we will be in very experienced and professional hands. With this change will come some significant impacts to your day-to-day usage at Old Hawthorne. Please expect changes and modifications to the following: Making Tee Times Reserving Courts/Registering for Clinics Signing Up for Events Making Dining Reservations The Old Hawthorne App Will Change Totally New Website New Point of Sale Software Clubwide New Billing & Statements

We will not leave you out in the cold though to figure this new system out on your own. Please stay tuned for frequent updates regarding these improvements and any action required on your part. We will communicate and help educate you with online demos and of course, we will be available to assist you individually as needed. The staff will begin our training in the middle of February, so expect to hear more from us after that time.

What's Going On? New tournament schedule set to release in early February. All events will have open registration 30 days prior to the event. PGA Junior league will be brought back for the 2022 season, as well as our beginner junior golf camps. We will release these dates as soon as the PGA and other clubs confirm with us.

Merchandise Moment DEMO days will no longer be hosted. Our club manufacturers want to host individual fitting days and are currently working with us to schedule several throughout the year.

PGA Jr. Golf Camp Returns Old Hawthorne is proud to partner with the PGA of Americas Junior golf camps. These camps are highly structured, fun, and are a great opportunity to meet new friends learning a lifelong sport. Lunch will be included. Junior Golf Camp Dates: June 1st-4th, June 28th-July 1st, and July 19th-22nd. Camps will run from 8:30am-12:30pm. Cost per member is $250 and $325 for non-members. Non-members have limited space and must be an acquaintance of an Old Hawthorne member.

2022 Golf Shop Hot List New Rogue irons and woods from Callaway New TaylorMade Stealth woods and irons Callaway has done it again with their new jail break “speed frame” and AI developed flash face technology. This technology is some of the best in the business for incredible distance and accuracy. The TaylorMade Stealth series has come out with an all new invention in distance. The drivers have fully engineered carbon faces for superior strength but the flexibility for incredible ball speeds. Be sure to get fit for your new equipment today!

Lesson Tip of the Day Do not underestimate your eye dominance! If you are right eye dominant (most are) you will have to keep your head more over the ball than someone who is left eye dominant. Tiger woods and Jack Nicklaus are both left eye dominant, so they are able to pull their head off the ball more than a right eyed player. Be careful when taking an extra-long backswing!

VOLUME 13

From the Greens Casey Cunningham Golf Course Superintendent [email protected]

Work To Do! This winter the maintenance staff and I have been staying busy with projects that entail cleaning the shop, revamping our maintenance shed, adding storage solutions, and making it more user friendly. The winter also gives us a time to reflect on the previous season and brainstorm ideas to help improve the golf course. We have been working on bunkers when weather allows, and on clearing under brush. When working on the bunkers, we have been removing all the contaminated sand at the base area over the drainage. We have also been making sure we have a consistent depth of sand. By removing the contaminated sand in the bottom and replacing it, it will allow to the bunkers to drain better and faster.

Looking Back at 2021 Reflecting on 2021, we feel we made more progress on greens speed consistency. We have also noticed progress in the firmness of the surrounds with the added topdressing we have done. We will continue topdressing and water management to ensure that we get to the level we need to be at or above. Water management was and will continue to be the biggest priority. Less water = firmer and faster surfaces.

Cart Path Rules This winter when it comes to cart path rules, there will be times when you’re playing earlier in the morning, and it seems everything is dry, when in fact everything is frozen. By 1:00 pm or so everything starts thawing out and that’s when we see the issues: we get root shearing and rutting. So please bear with us on the cart rules this winter to prevent damage. We will get carts off path as much as we can.

On The Courts Nick Loudermilk Tennis & Pickleball Director [email protected]

Keeps Getting Better! In a few short months we will be back on the courts and we will hear the laughter and excitement of tennis and pickleball play together again. Winters are always a buzzkill when it comes to our racquet sports, but we always come back stronger every year and 2022 will be no different. Member adult & junior trips, socials, and family events are all on the agenda for 2022 and we can’t wait to show you that we can continue to get better year after year.

Spring Opening Day We will be having our spring opening day on Saturday, April 30th at 11am. Its a little later in the year than what we are used to, but with our ladies trip to Charleston, and a full Club calendar, we opted for a date later in the month with fewer conflicts. Come on out and enjoy some complimentary drills, play with the pro’s and try out some new equipment as we we will have some of the latest and greatest models for you to play with.

US Open Trip Save The Date! September 2-5, 2022. We are heading to New York City to watch the US OPEN! Information for this trip will be finished soon. Please email if you have any questions. This trip will fill up!

Gym Talk Amanda Barnes-Tolson Fitness Director [email protected]

Please Be Considerate As we head into colder temperatures and find ourselves coming back to the fitness center for our workouts, Important reminders: PARKING: there is intermittent construction going on at the fitness center as crews work on the pool. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, PLEASE PARK IN THE TENNIS COURT PARKING LOT. This is also the best lot to park in during icy/snowy weather. BRING YOUR INSIDE SHOES: If there are icy or snowy conditions, PLEASE be considerate and wear outer shoes/boots and carry your athletic shoes into the facility. As much as you wipe your feet on our mats and carpets, that yucky salt and dirt gets into our machines and causes problems. Mind your feet. FEELING SNOTTY? If you are feeling under-the-weather (i.e. actively coughing and blowing your nose), PLEASE be considerate and keep yourself (and your germs) at home. Thank you for being considerate! I look forward to seeing you at the fitness center soon!

Zumba Gold Our girl, Carey, is adding another evening class to our schedule. Beginning in February, join her every Thursday at 5pm for Zumba Gold! Zumba Gold is designed for active aging adults who are looking to enjoy the original Zumba moves at a lower intensity. The choreography focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination. The class incorporates all elements of fitness including cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility, and balance. Come ready to sweat and prepare to leave empowered and feeling strong.

TPI Winter Warm Up Due to space concerns and current health guidelines, our TPI Winter Warm-up program will look a bit different this year. The program will be 8 weeks in length beginning February 7 and ending on April 1, 2022. This program is designed to keep you in shape through the winter months and prepare for the end of winter and start of golf season by using TPI golf-specific exercises suited to each individual’s need. Each participant will receive a TPI functional movement screen at the start and completion of the program, a TPI swing analysis by our golf pros at the start and completion of the program, and 16 30-minute TPI fitness sessions (2 sessions per week). You can participate in this program as an individual for $350 or as a couple/buddy for $600 ($300 per person) or as a small group for $750 ($250 per person). Ready to sign up? Grab a friend or two (or a spouse) and let’s get your sessions scheduled! Interested and have questions? Contact Amanda.

Lending Library: There is a wonderful lending library in the entryway of the fitness center. If you have books you would like to donate, bring them on down! If you are looking for something new to read, come on over and grab one! We ask that you borrow and return in a timely manner so that other reading members can have the opportunity to enjoy the books too. Questions? Contact Amanda.

VOLUME 13

From the Kitchen Anthony Schmidt Executive Chef [email protected]

Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness As we welcome a new year into our lives, our journey together is just beginning at Old Hawthorne. The culinary staff was able to take advantage of the restart with a well-deserved deep cleaning of the kitchen. Every single piece of equipment was broken down, scrubbed, sanitized, and put back together. The coolers and freezers deconstructed and reconstructed. Floors were scrubbed and polished. In the culinary world, cleanliness is next to godliness.

Behind the Scenes The club may not be humming with activities we typically see in spring and summer, however, behind the scene we are moving quickly on many projects that will be announced throughout the year accordingly. I can tell you the progression of Old Hawthorne is driving us to a club that is prompted to be like no other experience in the Mid-West. It is very exciting times being able to see the vision of our club for years to come. So much love and passion in every department is what really turns this into something

magical. I truly believe the magic derives from the staff, and Old Hawthorne has fantastic camaraderie which screams a healthy work environment.

Coming Soon! Spring Menu We are currently developing our spring menu transition. In the near future, our weekly features will highlight some of the menu changes to arise. Members have an opportunity to help with the development of the dishes with feedback. Our service staff gets to see, taste, and become acquainted with new menu items. And the culinary staff gets the skill to prep, cook, and execute set items. I am also able to refine my dishes while writing recipes. All moving towards a goal of having a smooth menu transition from every perspective. The Spring Menu will be orientated toward a lighter flavor profile and painted by wonderful local proteins, fruits, and vegetables.

Meet Pastry Chef Becca To conclude, I’m excited to put the culinary highlight on one amazing woman: Becca Liptak our Pastry Chef. I have had the privilege to work with Becca for years. No doubt the best Pastry Chef in Columbia. I’m awe-struck with her organization, versatility, cleanliness, attitude, and of course her food! Becca loves making bread the . Besides being a model human, she helps stray cats find homes. How cool is that? Very. You will always see her cool, calm, and collective with a smile while rocking out scrumptious bites of superb sweets. Becca started day 1 with me here and I look forward to seeing her grow and develop more for years to come.

Word Around the Table

Victor Arnold Food & Beverage Manager [email protected]

We are excited to be back and to get to see so many of our wonderful members. 2021 wasn’t without its bumps along the way but with record monthly sales throughout the entire year, we are excited to see what 2022 has in store. We know continued success will not just fall in our lap and so this is the time of year where we look ahead to see how we can continue providing enjoyable experiences through some club favorite events and maybe a few new ones!

Open Tuesdays! Last year “The Bar & Grille” opted to close on Tuesdays after the start of the New Year. Things quiet down with the holidays being over and the cold weather setting in. This past year however, has shown us that our members are using the facilities at an all-time high. We want to available to them as much as possible which is why we have decide to keep our facilities open on Tuesdays through these winter months and for the foreseeable future!

No Stopping Now! If you made it down this far in the newsletter, you have undoubtedly read about Clubessential, our new member and club management software that will be implemented on the first of March. It’s not my style to openly cast aspersions on any business, so I will simply say that we feel that this switch will be a big win for our staff and how we manage member accounts and billing for charges in The Bar & Grille. This rollout will feature simultaneous changes in how we book dining reservations, create event sign ups, online ordering, and applying and managing day to day charges in the restaurant. We are confident in Clubessential and the training they will provide to get us all up to speed. Please be patient with the staff as learning to navigate the new software will take a little time and can slow down certain steps of service. Additionally, please do not hesitate to give feedback to us if you feel your experience was hindered in anyway so that we can see to it that more training and attention is given to those that need it.

Wine Society Update I’ve been fielding several questions from our members in regards to the 2022 Wine Society. By now members of the Wine Society should have already received information regarding changes and event dates. While our retention rate for this popular experience is very high, we always have a few that will drop out before and after the March billing cycle. I will reference my waiting list to fill these vacancies as they present themselves. Those on the list will receive an email invitation from me with information about this year’s wine society and a response deadline. If you have not responded by the deadline, your invitation will be extended to the next member on the list. In the event that a member misses the deadline but still wants to join, they will get placed back atop the list. Another offer to join will be emailed if there is a separate invitation to another member that is declined or another spot is made available through other means. If you are interested in joining wine society, inquiring about the status of your spot on the list, or looking for more information about the wine society, please email me directly at [email protected].

Let's Celebrate! Christean Nguyen Private Events Manager [email protected]

Transform Your Space! There's more than one way to transform a space. Whether you're hosting an occasion at home or a designated venue. These guidelines will help you give your room a makeover. The most effective way to make a visual impact on a space is your choice of linens. This can take a space from a bland, boring, eyesore to a crisp, clean, colorful atmosphere. Honestly though, if you have beautiful tables, nix the linens and flaunt the furniture in its original beauty. Alright, say you've added linens, but it still looks "flat". Add some texture with a gathered runner or garland. Building a table's presentation upwards gives dimension. Next, add layers! Place centerpieces throughout your tables at different heights. A single floral centerpiece is always classic, but adding candles, and something fun with your floral will have your guests loving it! After all this, it's important to personalize your guest's experience. It can be as simple as providing cute place cards with their name or fully designing a menu to be placed at each table setting. This will give your guests a hole-inone experience.
