SMU GO Glossary of Words and Phrases
Delivery Unit (GO)
SMU GO is the Delivery Unit for online master’s degree programs developed through the current SMU contract. SMU GO is responsible for the operational components of delivery.
Academic Unit (AU)
The Academic Department responsible for all academic responsibilities of an online course including hiring Course Developers, Instructors, determining class schedules and so on. Please see SMU GO tactical document for more details.
Synchronous Session
Live session class session.
Asynchronous Session/Material
Pre-recorded videos and materials used, or assigned, between Synchronous sessions.
Instructional Designer (ID)
Individual assigned to assist faculty with development of a course.
Course Developer
Faculty member, or adjunct, assigned to create and develop a course with the aid of an ID.
Weekly Webinar
Synchronous session
Canvas
The Canvas Learning Management Platform allows students to access their courses where, when, and how it best fits their lifestyle.
Zoom
The online live platform online class and group meetings.
Module
Modules allow courses to be built in much the same manner as a syllabus and a course outline is constructed. For instance, course Modules containing course content could be built by week and automatically activated/deactivated as the needs of the course dictate.
LinkedIn Learning
Two LinkedIn Learning courses are required for all adjuncts and faculty to complete prior to signing their contract: Learning Canvas, and Learning to Teach Online.
Quality Measures Intent to Teach
Document indicating that the Course Developer intends to teach their course the first time it is offered and has the permission to do so from their AU.
Development Contract
Course Developers must sign a contract and are paid through accounts payable upon successful delivery of the course. Payment follows the University pay schedule.
SMU Email and ID
All communication with Course Developers, ID’s and other staff will be conducted through SMU email and telephone if the Developer prefers. No personal email will be used to conduct SMU business.
BOX
The University approved storage location for materials used while in production with ID’s. All work of a Developer becomes property of SMU and cannot be stored in a non-SMU system.
Recruiting
GO maintains recruiting for online graduate degree programs and provides daily reports of activities to GO Admissions, GO Leadership, and AU’s.
Admissions
GO manages the application process for admissions including all communication regarding AU decisions to applicants. GO tracks progress of each application ensuring appropriate response times for students submissions.
