INTERNAL MEDICINE DEPARTMENT AWARDS
THE CAPTAIN GEORGE LUIKEN AWARD
THE CAPTAIN COLLEEN COUNIHAN AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL TEACHING
Chosen by the staff of the Hematology-Oncology Division, this award is presented annually to the graduating resident who best emulates the principles demonstrated by CAPT George Luiken during his 23 years of service in the Medical Corps: caring, compassion, and dedication to his patients.
Awarded annually to a graduating Internal Medicine Resident by the Internal Medicine Interns. The recipient is honored as the resident whose example, encouragement, and teaching contributed most to a successful academic and training year. CAPT Colleen Counihan, MC, USN was a staff member in the Internal Medicine Department and the last graduate of the Rheumatology Fellowship at NMCSD. She died unexpectedly in 1995 while on active duty. She was an accomplished clinician-teacher who deeply loved the teaching programs at NMCSD.
THE CAPT RICHARD KEATING FELLOW TEACHING AWARD Awarded annually by the Internal Medicine Residents to the Subspecialty Fellow who most ably demonstrated excellence in teaching, mentoring, and leadership during the preceding academic year. CAPT Richard Keating, MC, USN was Chairman, Internal Medicine Department from 2000 to 2005. His enthusiasm for teaching and mentorship influenced generations of Navy internists. This award was first presented in 1998 and renamed for CAPT Keating in 2005.
THE CAPTAIN RICHARD DALY STAFF TEACHING AWARD Awarded annually by the Internal Medicine Residents to the Staff Physician who has most demonstrably given his or her time and teaching ability to the advancement of medical education in the preceding year. CAPT Richard Daly, MC, USN was a staff member in the Internal Medicine Department from 1981 to 2003. He left the department a legacy of learning, teaching, and equanimity. This award was first presented in 1997 and renamed for CAPT Daly in 2003.
THE TOWERING INTERNO Awarded to the Internal Medicine intern whose performance best demonstrates humanism in patient care, accomplishments in academics and commitment to the core values of the United States Navy.
The CAPT George Luiken Award was initiated in 1992 when CAPT George Luiken, MC, USN retired from active duty. It has been awarded annually since.
THE CAPTAIN JOHN MITAS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Awarded annually by the Internal Medicine Residents to the Staff Member who has contributed the most during the preceding year to the residency program. The recipient best exemplifies the high standards set by CAPT Mitas in advocating for the residency program while cultivating competence, humanism, and equanimity in the practice of medicine. CAPT John Mitas, MC, USN was Chairman of the Internal Medicine Department and Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency at NMCSD from 1988-1992. He was a dedicated clinician, teacher, and administrator whose commitment to the Department and its members is unrivaled. This award has been presented annually since 1992.
THE AEQUANIMITAS AWARD Awarded annually to a graduating Internal Medicine Resident by the Internal Medicine Staff. The recipient is honored as the physician who best embodies the qualities of professionalism, commitment to patient care, and equanimity in the practice of medicine as described by Sir William Osler in 1899. This award was initiated in 1980 by CAPT Gerald Roling, MC, USN, then-Chairman, Internal Medicine Department, upon his retirement from active duty and has been awarded to a graduating resident every year subsequently.
THE USS MIDWAY The USS Midway was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the 20th century. Named after the Battle of Midway of June 1942, Midway missed World War II by one week when commissioned Sept 1945. From the beginning of its service, the Midway played key roles in the Cold War. In 1946 it became the first American carrier to operate in the midwinter sub-Arctic. Just three years after that, Midway sent a large patrol plane aloft to demonstrate that atomic bombs could be delivered by a carrier.
Navy Internal Medicine Internal Medicine-‘The Internist’- is the medical discipline involving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of both acute and chronic diseases in all adults, from adolescence to old age. Internists take pride in their ability to manage medical pathology of any organ system. The Navy relies upon Internists to be especially adept in this wide scope of practice by employing internists in an array of climes, from the major treatment facilities such as NMCSD, to down range supporting Navy and Marine Corps operational efforts both in times of peace, conflict, and as we have just seen, pandemic. The graduates of today’s ceremony represent the future of Navy Internal Medicine. They include graduating interns, many of whom will be reporting directly to operational commands as the medical officer of deployable units; graduating residents, who are now deemed ready to become board certified internists and will work in as varied a range of jobs as any graduating internal medicine residency in the country; and fellows, who after previously completely internal medicine residency have now completed an additional 2-3 years of training and will be relied upon as the military’s subject matter experts in their respective discipline, while still needing to be adaptable to meet the shifting needs of our nation’s military.
Midway’s first combat deployment came in 1965 flying strikes against North Vietnam. Midway aircraft shot down three MiGs, including the first air kill of the war. However, 17 Midway aircraft were lost to enemy fire during this cruise. In 1966 Midway was decommissioned for a four-year overhaul. Over a chaotic two day period during the fall of Saigon in April 1975, Midway was a floating base for large Air Force helicopters which evacuated more than 3,000 desperate refugees. As potential threats to the Arabian oil supply grew, and to relieve strain on U. S.-based carriers, Midway transferred to Yokosuka, Japan, making it the first American carrier home ported abroad. In 1990 Midway deployed to the Persian Gulf in response to the Iraqi seizure of Kuwait. In the ensuing Operation Desert Storm, Midway served as the flagship for naval air forces in the Gulf and launched more than 3,000 combat missions with no losses. Its final mission was the evacuation of civilian personnel from Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines after the 20th century’s largest eruption of nearby Mount Pinatubo. On April 11, 1992 the Midway was decommissioned in San Diego and remained in storage in Bremerton, Washington until 2003 when it was donated to the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum organization. It opened as the USS Midway Museum in June 2004.
