We are your local air ambulance service.

Anybody could need our help, but we can’t continue to save lives without your support.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service provides pioneering critical care at the scene of an incident, rescuing hundreds of patients every year. Our team The onboard team is made up of a pilot, and a specially trained doctor and paramedic. The skills our team bring to the scene mean we can deliver enhanced life-saving procedures at the roadside, from giving blood and plasma, to performing openheart surgeries. We have two bases, our HQ in Eaglescliffe and our Cumbrian base in Langwathby. These two bases mean we can cover 8000 square miles, helping save lives across the North. Our history The charity has come a long way in its 20 years, overcoming challenges and driving innovation at every step. From the charity’s beginning in May 2002, we have since opened two bases, responded to 23,500 incidents and helped improve pre-hospital care worldwide.

GNAAS fact: It takes more power to run the helicopter in warmer weather.

Our helicopters We currently operate three helicopters. These include our Eurocopter Dauphin AS365 N3 and N3+ aircraft, alongside our Eurocopter Dauphin AS365 N2 helicopter. These are medium-weight twinengine helicopters that are used globally for civilian and military activity. With a top speed of 190mph we can make a journey in 14 minutes, that would take an hour by car. The helicopters all have unique registrations and two of our helicopters have names. G-NHAD, is the Guardian of the North II and G-NHAE, is the Pride of Cumbria II. The third, G-NHAC is our back-up helicopter. Our rapid response vehicles Our fleet also includes two rapid response vehicles. These are both Volvo XC90s and are used at night or if the helicopter is unable to fly due to extreme weather conditions. The same team is onboard, including a doctor and paramedic, and the same life-saving interventions can be administered. We currently operate in the North East five nights a week, and two nights a week in Cumbria. We hope to be a 24/7 service.

Leading innovation In order to stay at the forefront of pre-hospital care, we are committed to a programme of clinical innovation. This allows us to offer the latest technologies, equipment and treatments to the people who need them most. We became one of the first air ambulances to carry blood on board, hitting a milestone in May 2022 of giving blood to 500 patients. We carry all the equipment needed to perform some of the most advanced medical procedures available. Items we carry include ultrasound machines, blood warmers, thoracotomy kits, ventilators and so much more. We have also trialled jet suit technology as a means to access more patients in hard to reach areas. The jet suit can travel at up to 85mph, meaning a climb that would normally take 25 minutes by foot can be covered in only 90 seconds, resulting in less suffering and more lives saved.

Events at GNAAS Whether you want to get active or be social, there’s an event in our diary for you. Last year our packed events calendar saw us celebrate our 20th anniversary with two charity balls, as well as two golf days in the North East and Cumbria. We also introduced a brand-new bingo night! The world’s greatest half marathon, the Great North Run, takes place in the area we serve and every year hundreds of supporters run with #TeamGNAAS. Or, you can fundraise your way with a virtual challenge! Explore our region’s breathtaking views by running, cycling or swimming, or hold your own dress-down day, bake sale or game-a-thon – the options are endless. Signing up to an event, or holding your own fundraising event for GNAAS means our critical care team can continue to be there for those who need us most.
