Market OverviewWest AfricaThe modern cinema industry in West Africa is undergoing rapid development, with expansions on-going across major cities in its Anglophone countries. Since 2014, Gross Box Office (GBO) has grown year-on-year at an average rate of 27%, with the total number of cinema companies amounting to 33 as of December 2019. In 2019, Nigeria, the leading territory in the region, was recognized with the Emerging Cinema Market Award, received by Filmhouse Cinemas. There are also cinemas operating in the Francophone countries of Sub-saharan Africa, which spans the western, eastern and southern parts of the continent. However, these markets have experienced a slow growth rate as a result of the lack of substantial contributions from local contents, and price structures hinged to only soothe the elites who make up a minimal percentage of the population. Consequently, patronage has been poor, thereby discouraging investments on expansions. Recently, French cinema companies - Pathe and CanalOlympia have begun making efforts to penetrate key markets such as Cameroun and Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa, as well as Ivory Coast in the West.1110The Nigerian Film IndustryLEKKI | SURULERE | ONIRU | DUGBE | SAMONDA | BENIN | AKURE | PORT HARCOURT | KANO | CIRCLE MALL | LANDMARKMarket OverviewAfricaTop Cinemas Chains by number of locations(South Africa)50 Locations(South Africa)21 Locations(Nigeria)12 Locations(Nigeria)10 Locations(Nigeria)9 Locations(Nigeria)5 Locations(South Africa)4 Locations
