YOU’VE LIKELY NOTICED the City of Vancouver rezoning application sign outside the Club on Fir Street. It signals that we’re in the early stages of our permit process for our Phase 2 Fitness Centre Renovation. This project has been a significant focus for the Board over the last few years and this year Members will get a chance to vote on whether to move forward with our proposal and costing. To get us to this point, a great deal of work has been done by the Facilities Committee and our Management team. This year the Facilities Committee is chaired by Jonathan Barrett, Board of Directors, and includes Michael Petrovic, Peter Locke, Norm Hughes, Rhys Williams, Philip Pincus, Jim Goodwin, Herb Evers, Karen Levine and Roland Haebler. Their work on this project involves three main areas: • Continue to collaborate with our architects to design and cost the project with a planned construction start of early 2021. • Work with the Fitness and Member Experience & Engagement Committees to define how we will use the new space and how we will repurpose existing Fitness space for maximum Member value. • Identify the impact construction will have on the operation of the Club such as the areas that will need to be shut down and for how long. This work will continue into 2020 as more information is obtained from the Construction Manager. Last fall the Facilities Committee partnered with our architects to hold information sessions for Members to view and provide feedback on three design options. To arrive at those designs, we gathered information from a number of sources: • Usage stats of the current fitness facilities • Member opinions in two separate surveys • Other club and fitness centre designs • Best practices in terms of current and
future fitness trends • High level costs Member feedback from the information sessions was positive with some excellent suggestions and ideas for consideration. Our architects, along with the Facilities and Fitness Committees, have been working with your feedback to refine a single design option. The Board of Directors will review that final proposal and, if approved, we expect to present it, along with costing, to the Membership for a vote in September. A big thank you to the Facilities Committee for all their efforts in getting our designs and costing in place. Other capital projects are also a part of the committee’s work for the year. As you’re now very aware, hard courts 9-12 are being resurfaced. And, unfortunately, the Pub deck membrane has failed and will need to be replaced. Our intent is to schedule any significant work with the least possible disruption to Members. Maintaining and improving our facilities is an essential part of our operations. One of the unique things about Vancouver Lawn is that while we’re committed to the continuous improvement of our facilities, we’re also careful to honor the history and charm that our Members love. It’s not always an easy thing to balance but it’s something we can all be proud of — it’s certainly something that sets us apart. I would like to thank everyone who attended the Celebration of Life for Ken Gordon in early May and those who contributed to the GoFundMe campaign for his family. This demonstrated how compassionate and giving the Vancouver Lawn community is — something his family truly appreciated. Terence Little President

INTRODUCING JERRY KAVOURAS, OUR NEW ASSISTANT F&B MANAGER PLEASE JOIN US IN WELCOMING JERRY KAVOURAS as our new Assistant Food & Beverage Manager in the Players’ Lounge. Jerry has excellent experience coming to us from Quilchena Golf & Country Club and, prior to that, Frankie’s Italian Kitchen and The Keg. He brings forth strength in the areas of restaurants, banquets Jerry Kavouras, and event planning. It’s our Assistant F&B Manager pleasure to have such an enthusiastic professional on board to assist us in supporting the elevation of our F&B experience.
Q&A with Jerry Q: What are you most excited about in terms of your new role with Vancouver Lawn? "Meeting all of the Members to understand what they need, what they’re accustomed to, and how we can heighten their experience."
Q: W hat are the key elements of a successful F&B Operation? "Friendliness, timeliness and openness are keys to providing excellent service." Q: Who cooks at home and what’s your favourite homemade meal? "Me at home now, however, when I lived with my big, fat Greek family, it was always my Mom because no one else is allowed in a Greek mother’s kitchen. Pastitsio is her most incredible dish!" Q: What difference do you see coming from a golf club to a racquets club? "Things are much faster in the racquet environment, game times are much quicker and turnover is much higher." We look forward to having Jerry share his expertise with Vancouver Lawn. Please drop by the F&B office to say hello or contact him at: Jerry Kavouras Assistant Food & Beverage Manager (604) 731-2191 ext 234 [email protected]
CATERING MENUS NOW AVAILABLE WE’RE HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE that our new Catering menus are ready for the upcoming season. We have focused on enhancing our reception packages and streamlining our working lunches. Receptions can now feature our wildly popular tapas and paella menu which many of you enjoyed at our Masters Players’ Reception. We’re also looking to work on League menus with a focus on expediting the food experience. Carly Anderson, Catering Manager, is currently booking fall meetings and space is filling up. Christmas dates are also beginning to fill so speak to Carly as soon as you can in order to secure a date.
experience! Try a Ginger Lime Fizz using four simple ingredients: ginger beer, sparkling water, fresh mint and dash of lime or lemon juice. It’s the perfect drink for a hot summer day around the pool deck or patio. Ginger beer isn’t actually a beer and it’s different from ginger ale. Ginger beer is fermented which gives this drink a punch of flavour.
July 18th we’re hosting our annual White Party which sells out quickly each year. Our 3rd Annual Beer Festival will be August 15th and we have many exciting breweries lined up to showcase their delicious offerings.

TENNIS PRO NEWS | UROS BUDIMAC
A CONVERSATION WITH UROS BUDIMAC The following is a conversation with Uros Budimac, Head Tennis Pro, and Marlene Hecker, chair of the Tennis Committee As the newly assigned chair of the Tennis Committee, Marlene sat down with our Head Tennis Pro, Uros Budimac, to talk about Tennis at Vancouver Lawn: You started here in January 2017; what do you think have been the top accomplishments in the tennis program since then? We’ve done a good job of introducing some of Canada’s best female Tennis players/coaches to assist us. Sharon Fichman, Brittany Wowchuk, Alexandra Sigouin, and Daniella Silva (all parttime) have worked with us since 2017. We’ve also created flexible Drill classes allowing Members of all levels to partake in early morning, midday, evening and weekend lessons. We’re really maximizing court utilization by focusing on allowing more Members to play per coaching court, and by offering more group classes instead of private lessons. What have been your biggest challenges? Understanding the various needs of our Members. We surveyed the membership to identify opportunities and challenges within the program, however, it takes 2-3 years to get to know a Club fully. There’s been an incredible amount of change at the Club since I started in 2017. We’ve been communicating a great deal about all the positive changes that are happening and we will continue to do that. Balancing time on and off court. That will always be a challenge for someone in my position, as Tennis Directors must deal with multiple environments simultaneously. What exciting projects are in the works for the 2019/2020 season? We recognize that there’s no organized play during the summer months and so we are putting on a “self-scheduled” Singles ladder for Members as a first-year trial. We’re also introducing Playsight for indoor
court 4 which is a video analysis software system. We’re working on a timeline for the installation of 6 cameras and a “debrief” station that will allow Members to see themselves play and analyze their performance using video. RacquetFit – the Body Tennis Connection. This will allow us to do physical assessments on Tennis players who wish to have a better serve. What is the Budimac Tennis Group and how does it relate to the Club? Budimac Tennis Group was established at the end of 2016 and has been contracted by Vancouver Lawn to oversee all aspects of lessons and programming. Many clubs use a similar model whereby the Tennis professionals are contractors. We have about 20% of court space (varies during seasons), and we do our very best to balance between private lessons, groups, and general programming. What is your vision? Tennis is a sport for everyone. If you can hold a racquet, you are welcome to come out and give it a try. Giving people confidence in what they’re doing; and to have them feel great about themselves when they come off the court. In a social, motivating and fun environment, Tennis is a sport in which everyone can get better, and feel that competitive spirit — no matter their age or level of play. How would you describe your typical day? i. I’m up and running by 5-6 am most days. Three days a week, I’m on court before 7 am for a couple of hours, and then I jump into emails and all the administration that requires my attention. I try to fit in a workout 4-5 times each week at the gym or a spin class. I usually have 1-3 meetings a day, either with our coaches or with other colleagues in the industry, or Tennis BC/Tennis Canada as I represent BC at the Tennis Professionals Association. ii. T here are also times when we host evening or weekend social events, meetings, or coaching sessions so I try and balance my other duties in order to be able to give 100% when I’m at the Club or on court.

BADMINTON PRO NEWS | RAM NAYYAR
BADMINTON PARTICIPATION GROWING AT THE CLUB WHAT AN INCREDIBLE YEAR IT’S BEEN! We’ve seen growth in virtually every area of our sport around the Club. Juniors, seniors, competitive, recreational, tournament hosting, and free play have literally been buzzing along in the Badminton Hall year-round. We’ve also implemented a court booking system to provide a more accurate portrait of how busy the courts are, as too often people have come to play and run into another competing program. Please visit the Front Desk or Sport Shop if you need help booking a court. That said, there’s still room to grow and I’m looking forward to a busy summer that flows into a much busier fall. Keep an eye out for the Fall Program Guide and our new program listings, especially for those who are new to Badminton! We’re hosting our annual High Performance Camp from July 2nd to 12th and we’re running a number of kids' camps this summer so please register online or contact me with any questions. Plus, the water’s viscosity provides resistance proportionate to the effort placed against it so that means you can tailor your workout intensity to fit your needs. Last but not least, the Aqua Fit participants are a seriously fun group. If you need extra workout motivation, this class is the place to be! HAPPY CANADA DAY! SUMMER IS NOW OFFICIALLY HERE! To celebrate Canada’s birthday, and the start of summer, all logo clothing is 20% off for the month of July as well as 20% off our Vancouver Lawn insulated water bottles. We also have sunscreen, hats and visors, and UV-protecting swim goggles, so remember to stay sun safe while out enjoying the beautiful weather this summer. Released earlier this year, the Wilson Clash has been a massive success so far, offering players a comfortable and versatile racquet to help improve their game. In order to reach even more people, Wilson has released several more versions of this racquet which I've brought in to the Sport Shop. The Clash 108 offers the same comfort with a larger frame than the original, resulting in a more forgiving sweet spot, as well as more power. On the other side of the spectrum, the Clash 98 is an even more control-oriented frame than the original, giving you the confidence to take big cuts at the ball while maintaining pin point accuracy. To round out the group, we have the Clash 100L. This frame offers all the same comfort and power as the Clash 100 but in a lighter, more maneuverable package. Due to size constraints, I’d like to remind everyone that we might not always have every racquet, shoe, or piece of clothing in stock but I’m always happy to special order products for you at no additional charge. Typically, this takes around one to two weeks to arrive so please ask me about any product even if you don’t see it in the shop. Josh Garber Sport Shop Supervisor

AN
MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER KAREN VAN SCHIE General Manager
SUMMER’S HERE, OUR DECKS AND PATIOS ARE OPEN, and programming is in full swing with lots of fun planned for Members of all ages! The annual White Party takes place on July 18th and sells out fast so please call the Front Desk to book your spot. Also this summer, we’re introducing live music on the Pub deck every Saturday night. Join us for some light acoustics while enjoying dinner on the Pub deck or poolside. FOOD & BEVERAGE F&B continues to have its challenges and I hope that by the time this goes to press we’re able to open the Pub for lunch. This has been delayed due to our severe staffing shortages in both the front and back of house. We were planning to open the Pub for lunch after the bubbles came down but we simply did not have the team in place to do it. We’re not just feeling the pinch in the Pub as the Players’ Lounge, Bistro and Functions are also having challenges. The lack of a stable workforce leads to a lack of consistency in both the food and in service, something we’ve been working so hard to improve on. The amount of Function business we do is a key factor in the financial success of our F&B operations. As it stands now, we’re holding back on our efforts as we do not have the confidence that we will have the resources to look after this business. We’re currently experiencing a higher than average turnover rate in Food & Beverage and, although there are a variety of reasons why people don’t stay, the lack of adequate compensation is the most common one. As many of you are likely aware, the employment market in Vancouver has been significantly impacted by affordability issues for retail and service staff. Many of our formerly reliable sources for team members are no longer viable in the current climate making the hiring and retention of experienced culinary and service team members exceptionally competitive. To this end, we’ve been gathering information from other clubs on their compensation and benefits models. On a more positive note we how have a full management team in place with the addition of Michelle Mousseau, Director of Food & Beverage,
and Jerry Kavouras, Assistant Food & Beverage Manager. Please come and try our new menus in the Players’ Lounge as we’ve been receiving great feedback on our summer fresh salads, especially the Vancouver Lawn Healthy Bowl which is a 5-level super food meal. POOL SAFETY & ETIQUETTE Warm weather also means the pool will be busier than ever and your safety is very important to us. Please remember that children under the age of 4 must be accompanied by an adult in the pool at all times, and those between the ages of 4 and 7 must have an adult on the pool deck watching them. This will allow our lifeguards to focus on the safety of everyone in the pool. Also, we’ve had a little trouble in the past with guests not being registered so please make sure you’re familiar with our rules. With the promise of another hot summer, the pool deck chairs and tables will be in high demand and we’ve had lots of feedback on how to better manage their use. So, to that end, we’ve introduced a new system to ensure chairs are not being reserved. Thank you all for your cooperation and also a reminder to everyone to please respect the needs of others around the pool deck. ADULT TENNIS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Another successful Adult Tennis Club Championships took place in June. Congratulations to all Members who participated as there was some great tennis being played. I’d also like to extend a big thank you to Uros, Heather, our sponsors BlueShore Financial, and all the volunteers who helped to make this year’s tournament a huge success. Thank you also for your patience while we undergo the resurfacing of hard courts 9-12, and to our good neighbours at Jericho who kindly extended Tennis reciprocal privileges during this time. I look forward to seeing you around the Club and I wish you a fun and safe summer! Karen van Schie General Manager
