MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
CORRY SILBERNAGEL President
BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2018 Corry Silbernagel, President/Executive Terence Little, Vice President/ Membership & Marketing Matthew Taylor, Secretary/Facilities Jeff Boomer, Treasurer/Finance Cathy Brown, Squash Richard Freeman, Badminton John Harvey, Tennis Tim Shoveller, Fitness Marlene Hecker, Food & Beverage Richard Rosenbaum, Member Engagement CLUB MANAGEMENT Karen van Schie, General Manager [email protected] Brian Dicken, Operations Manager [email protected] Rose Thauberger, Controller [email protected] Heather Nivison, Programs Manager [email protected] Paul Maaker, Membership & Marketing Manager [email protected] David Martin, Food & Beverage Manager [email protected] Kevin Luther, Assistant Food & Beverage Manager [email protected] Kelly Yoo, Assistant Food & Beverage Manager [email protected] Brian Fowke, Executive Chef [email protected] Scott Little, Sous Chef [email protected]
WE ARE WELL INTO THE NEW YEAR and the Club’s Board of Directors and the management team have been hard at work planning the year. I’d like to update you on some of the areas of focus. We now have the results from our fall Membership Satisfaction Survey, we held our annual strategic planning day for the Board and management, and we welcomed our new Executive Chef, Brian Fowke. Vancouver Lawn recently implemented a new approach to Member surveys, from an exhaustive survey every three years to something less comprehensive, but more actionable, and conducted annually. The most recent survey received input from 719 members, which is a great response rate, and represented an overall balance of ages, gender, and years at the Club. To summarize the results, Club Members endorsed a high level of likelihood to recommend the Club to others, and reported a high level of overall satisfaction and perceived value of the Club. However, there are opportunities to create more positive perceptions for some groups, particularly among Social Members. Racquet sports enjoy relatively high satisfaction levels while food services and social events had relatively lower satisfaction levels. The current court booking system was a frequently suggested area for improvement, and Members noted mixed feelings about the variety, quality, and value of the food and beverage offerings. The annual Board and management planning day was held on February 3rd. We focused on Member attraction and paying down our debt, member harmony/facility utilization, organizational effectiveness, and food and beverage (F&B) operations. Highlights for member attraction and debt reduction included looking at ways to add tennis court capacity, looking at our aging demographics and membership cap to ensure our long-term viability, and focusing on ensuring value for our Social Members. In regard to member harmony/ facility
utilization, adoption of a Member Code of Conduct was explored, as were approaches to enforcing our existing rules. Improving family-oriented programming and overall access to the Club was also considered. On organization effectiveness, we looked at prioritizing improvements to the court booking systems, which included looking at ways to more effectively use the digital systems we already have, and to improve reporting systems for food and beverage. Lastly, on food and beverage, attention was paid to developing the operating plan to break even in our finances by 2020. An understanding of the trade-offs between cost and Member experience was identified as important, as is the need to more effectively define and market the various food outlets to Members. Lastly, we are looking at labour strategies to deliver the appropriate service levels to members while maintaining strong employee engagement. As you may recall, last year we incurred a significant loss in food and beverage. An early finding was that the cost of having both the Pub and Players’ Lounge open for lunch during the slow seasons is very high. The cost savings were so substantial that it was felt that this outweighed the benefit to Members of having the choice of two outlets for lunch during these times. Continuing on the food and beverage theme, in mid-January we welcomed our new Executive Chef, Brian Fowke, to the Club and we’re excited to have him join our team. We hope to highlight our Chef Brian with events and revised menus as the year progresses. I have had a number of Members approach me with glowing reviews on the food so far. I hope you will join me in dining more at the Club and making it to some of the great events planned for the coming months. I look forward to updating you on our progress in my next letter. Corry Silbernagel President

CULINARY | VANCOUVER LAWN
INTRODUCING BRIAN FOWKE, OUR NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF BRIAN IS ORIGINALLY FROM SASKATCHEWAN but has called Vancouver and BC home since 1999 with his three children and wife. Brian is classically trained in French cuisine, and he spent a good portion of his formative career in the legendary Joe Fortes kitchen. His philosophy on food is one of layered flavours with dishes that are influenced by West Coast style where vegetables, fish, and fine meats share equally in importance. Brian embraces the hard work and countless hours that it takes to conduct a successful Food & Beverage program. He is looking forward to meeting all of our Members, as a big part of his passion is mingling and talking about food.
creams or sauces. Salsas and chutneys enhance flavour and are healthier. Food that grows together in the same season tastes best together.”
Q & A with Chef Brian
“More ethnic influences in breakfast, interesting preparations of vegetables becoming centre of the plate, and heritagebreed meats. If you’re going to eat a steak, eat the best and consume less.”
Q: Are there ingredients you like to use that would surprise people? “Lemon and vinegars. Not enough that you can taste it. I strongly believe in balance in food. Lemon adds a clean acidity that ‘brightens’ sauces.” Q: Do you have a secret ingredient and/or technique you can share with our Members? “Do not over-fuss. Take 2 or 3 local, seasonal items and let the flavours shine through. Grilling, sautéing or roasting brings out the pure flavours. Do not cover up the taste with heavy
Q: Do you have favourite places where you shop for ingredients? “Granville Island. I’m there every day." Q: Who cooks at home, and do you have a favourite dish you like to prepare for your family? “When I'm at home my kids cook with me. We start the day at the market and create together. Last Sunday it was chipotle pork belly with avocado salad.” Q: Are there any new or emerging food trends that excite you?
Q: What can our Members anticipate coming from the kitchen in the next few months? “Chef James has left me a great legacy. I will build on his foundations using my strengths and focus on local, sustainable foods with some more variety. Expect a fresh sheet in the Pub each week and new soups, salads and lunch specials in the Players’ Lounge.”

TENNIS PRO NEWS | UROS BUDIMAC
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE BALL MACHINE IT’S WONDERFUL TO SEE SO MANY OF YOU taking advantage of the ball machines our Club has to offer. There’s nothing like playing against a ‘partner’ that doesn’t miss, makes you more consistent, and allows you to repeatedly practice the shot of your choice!
Vancouver Lawn:
Here are a few tips on how you can get the most out of an hour with the ball machine:
• Please do not combine all orange balls from two ball machines into one as that puts pressure on the motor and may cause the machine to stop functioning properly.
• M ake it move you! When you select an option allowing you to play multiple shots from the same location, it might not be very realistic as tennis requires you to move for every single ball. For example, if you are working on your forehand cross court, be sure to recover appropriately before playing your next shot. • Alter the height of balls fed. Easiest are the balls received at waist height, with perfect depth. Make sure you set the ball machine up in a way that it gives you some arcing balls that require you to adjust your movement laterally and challenge your impact point. • Hit at targets! Studies have shown that our performance can improve dramatically by simply having a target on the other side of the net. Feel free to use some of the coaching targets (found beside court 4 and 12) and set them down to where you plan on sending your shots. BALL MACHINE FACTS
We are working hard on keeping the ball machines in best shape for your use. Here are some facts about the ball machines at
• We replace all ball machine balls quarterly. • Each ball machine receives 144 brand new orange Penn balls (exclusively to be used for ball machine bookings).
• Regular (yellow) tennis balls are not meant to be fed into the machines. • Place the ball machine in the centre of the baseline when setting up your feeds. • Please use the swifter provided to clean the ball fluff left around the ball machine after your use so it does not spread onto the other courts. • Each ball machine now has a number on it so if you notice a problem that requires attention then please report the issue and the number to the Sport Shop or Front Desk. • If you require help using the ball machines, please contact Josh Garber in the Sport Shop or ask one of our Tennis coaches. Keep up the great training on the ball machines, and if you have any questions about how to make your workout even better then contact us at [email protected]. Head Tennis Professional, Uros Budimac

BADMINTON PRO NEWS | RAM NAYYAR
UPCOMING EVENTS Looking ahead, please make note of the following dates: SPRING CAMPS: Badminton-specific Camp March 19th to 23rd 10:30 am - 12 pm Cost: $125.00 per person CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS are ongoing so please check with Ram to see if some events still have availability. Levels A, B and C. CANADIAN MASTERS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS April 23rd to 29th
TOURNAMENT NEWS & RESULTS I HOPE EVERYONE’S HAD A CHANCE to watch some of the spectacular Badminton play during the various tournaments that the Club has hosted so far this year. In January, it was time for our Masters' athletes to shine while we hosted the Annual Vancouver Lawn Masters Tournament. It was one of the larger Masters events held in BC this year and we had over 10 athletes from the Club competing in a variety of categories and a total of 138 participants. It also confirms that people are excited about coming to Vancouver Lawn as we get closer to hosting the National Masters in April of this year. Results from this tournament were as follows: • In the Men’s 45+ Singles, it was an allVancouver Lawn final with Stan Dee taking home the gold over clubmate Byron Kidd, and an honorable mention to Albert Chan who finished fourth in this grouping. • In the Men’s 45+ Doubles, Collin Koo and John Clark won the consolation final, while in the Men’s 50+ Doubles the team of Bruce Anderson and Rhys Williams lost in the consolation final. That match, along with many others from the weekend, can be watched on YouTube by searching VLTBC Masters 2018. • One of the most highly viewed matches was the Para-Badminton exhibition (also available on YouTube). Many people commented on how much fun it was to watch, and the impressive athletic ability of the Para-Badminton athletes.
7 MARCH/APRIL 2018
The next event we’re hosting is the National Circuit Tournament for the Badminton Canada Junior Elite Series. We have 132 Juniors from across the country competing in this important event, one of the last qualifiers to make it onto representative teams for events such as the Pan-Am Juniors and World Juniors. I'll update you on our Club Juniors resutls in the next issue of HiLIGHTS. Looking ahead, we’re hosting the National Masters Championships April 23rd to 28th. This is an event not to be missed as there will be contestants not only from across Canada and the USA, but literally from around the world. The final awards banquet will be held at the Club, so be sure to join us in the Badminton Hall during the week for some spectacular play! TIPS FROM THE PRO
My coaching tip is ‘do drills like you’d play games’. When you come out to practice, don’t just hit shots but put something on the outcome. For example, if you want to practice drop shots, turn the drill into a game by assigning hitting areas for both the dropper and the lifter; say, "if the dropper hits it further than the front service line, that will be considered out; if the lifter can't reach the doubles service line, it will also be considered out." This way, both of you are engaged in the outcome. Not only are you practicing, but you’re practicing under controlled pressure which is great for focus and nerves. Put your favourite beverage or snack on the line and away you go! Ram Nayyar Head Badminton Pro

SPRING FOR NEW STRINGS AFTER THE LAST COUPLE MONTHS OF RAIN it’s great to see a few days of sun starting to string together. With better days on the horizon, it’s a great idea to start prepping your equipment for the upcoming spring and summer season! With this in mind, we have some great new sales happening in the coming months. For March we will be marking down all Asics tennis shoes $20. April will be the month to show off your Vancouver Lawn pride with all logo clothing being reduced by 20%. Just recently we have received some new products definitely worth checking out. Drop by to see the new Wilson Ultras and Pro Staffs, along with the new Venus Williams' line of clothing called Eleven. Feel free to come in and take advantage of our demo program, try out some of our frames, or try on some new outfits! Did you know that strings play just as important of a role in the feel and performance of your racquet as the frame itself does? The right string type, tension, or even just a fresh set of strings, can make a world of difference in your game. Have you been looking for more comfortable strings for a sore arm, do you want more power, more spin, or do you break strings too often and simply want a longer lasting string? Whatever your need, there’s a perfect string for you. I always love chatting, so come on in and let’s talk strings! Josh Garber Sport Shop Supervisor

MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER KAREN VAN SCHIE General Manager
I’M AMAZED AT HOW QUICKLY this fiscal year is rolling by and it’s hard to believe that we’re already approaching the end of the second quarter. I’m pleased to report that first quarter financial results were positive and we’re tracking ahead of budget in the key areas of Food & Beverage, Membership entrance fees and dues, and overall Operations. In an effort to move the F&B operation of the Club closer to the goal of being a break-even operation, management began a review of operating hours this past fall. The review found that the Club did not generate enough revenue to support having two restaurants and two kitchens open for the luncheon period. After looking at recent history, we also found that the second quarter (January to March) is typically the quietest period of the year for lunch revenues. With this information in mind, the decision was made to consolidate lunch business in the Players’ Lounge and to open the Pub at 3 pm every day. Although the upside to this was the inherent cost savings, we recognize that not all Members were pleased with this decision. I invite you to give lunch in the Players’ Lounge a try if you haven’t done so in a while. Our new Executive Chef, Brian Fowke, has re-vamped the daily specials, we’ve added some seating in the lounge, and we’ve opened the Players’ Bistro at noon which has helped with the few occasions where tables in the Players’ Lounge have not been available. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and please know that we’re working hard to grow the business in all areas so that decisions like this will not be necessary in the future. The Pub will re-open for lunch on Tuesday, April 3rd with a new menu and we’re looking forward to welcoming you back. Thank you all for supporting some of the new events that have been introduced over the past little while. If you have a suggestion for an event you’d like to see, please let me know or reach out to our newly formed Member Engagement Committee, headed by Richard Rosenbaum. If you haven’t had a chance to attend our Speaker Series we have two more planned for this year. Both the Finbarr O’Reilly & Angus Reid events were excellent and wellattended. On Thursday, May 10th, we’re pleased to welcome Dr. Keiron McConnell who will speak about The Construction of the Gang in BC – Mafiosa, Gangsta or Thug? Dr. McConnell has based his doctoral research on his 28 years of experience
with a large urban police force, the last 15 years of which were exclusively in gang suppression units. It promises to be an interesting and informative evening. Our search continues for a new Head Squash Pro and we’re happy to report that we have received many qualified applications. Interviews will continue through March and we hope to have the new person in place by early May. Many thanks to Cathy Brown, chair of the Squash Committee, and her committee members for their assistance in keeping things running smoothly in the interim. The Bubble-Down schedule is as follows: • April 23rd to 24th: Tennis Hardcourts Bubble Down • April 24th to May 9th: Tennis Clay Courts Bubble Down & Annual Maintenance • April 25th to 26th: Pool Bubble Down This schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change if it rains. Just another reminder that the pool is closed from April 3rd to 25th/26th as we complete much needed repairs to the tile on the pool deck. There will be no access to the pool or whirlpool during this time, and we apologize for the inconvenience. April is a big month for tournaments. We’re proud to once again host the 41st Annual Vancouver Lawn Masters Indoor Tennis Tournament which is being held from April 6th to 15th. This is Western Canada’s largest tennis tournament. Next up, we’re especially proud to be hosting the National Squash Doubles Championships from April 12th to 15th. And also in April, we will be host to the Canadian Masters Badminton Championships from April 22nd to 28th. If you haven’t registered to play, please come out and watch some great racquet sport competitions at the Club. Lastly, as noted in Corry’s President’s column, we have received the results from the Membership Satisfaction Survey. While we are pleased with the overall feedback from our Members, we understand that there’s room for improvement in a few key areas. Please note that the results will be sent to all Members in the first week of March and also posted on our Club’s website. Karen van Schie General Manager
