Periscope
Physics Project By Kevin Chan, 3C (3)
Periscope is a very useful optical instrument. It can be used in our daily lives, in military and many other aspects. In this project we will study more facts about this useful optical instrument. I. Theory A periscope uses a set of prisms, lenses, or mirrors to reflect images through a tube. When light from a distant object reaches the top mirror, it will be reflected by the 45-degree-mirror to the bottom mirror at an angle of 90 degrees. The reflected light from the top mirror is reflected at an angle of 90 degrees again by the bottom mirror, which is also at 45 degrees. The viewer is then able to see the distant object by the two reflections. The viewer can still see the images at the bottom if he observes from the top of the periscope, because the theory is the same. The only difference when the viewer is at the top is that the light comes from the bottom of the periscope. Simple periscopes use only flat mirrors as compared to the periscopes used in submarines, which are usually a complex optical system using both lenses and mirrors. II. Structure of a simple periscope The structure of a periscope is very simple, the materials are as follow:
2 flat mirrors
a cardboard
tape
Typically a periscope is similar to the figure on the right when it is not grouped. The 45-degree-cracks are to hold the two mirrors, one at the top and one at the bottom. Two holes are cut at the top and bottom to let lights go in and out. Some periscopes use prisms instead of mirror to let the reflected light be brighter and clearer. With the structure above, viewers can see lights from distant objects.

III. Uses
For kids to have fun
Scientific Investigation To observe what happens under river water, lake or sea
For bus drivers to see what
Used in submarines,
happens on the upper deck
for people underwater to see what happens on the water surface
IV. Suppliers and Prices in Hong Kong Suppliers? Everyone can make a periscope easily. There are some manufacturers selling toy periscopes though. Toy periscopes are usually below $100. Periscopes of other uses, such as those on buses and in submarines, need to be special designed, thus cannot be found in the market.

Conclusion As one of the optical instruments, periscope plays its role well. It helps us to do many things that we cannot do only by our hands. There are also many other optical instruments in Physics, such as microscope, telescope, spectacles, etc. Each of
them

more
convenient.
Understanding and well using of them is the first step to success.
