There Is no question today that the air many of us breath-in is polluted, nor that this pollution is potentially life-threatening and causes misery for millions. The threat is generally worse in cities than in the countryside but the fact is none of us can take our fresh air for granted.

The British Heart Foundation describe living in the worst hit areas of the UK to be as deadly as smoking over 150 cigarettes a year. Its research shows that pollution can affect your heart and circulation by causing blood vessels to narrow and harden, raising blood pressure and making your blood more likely to clot. The Alzheimer’s Society reports that a Canadian study of 6.6 million people found that those living within 50 metres of a major road were 7% more likely to develop dementia than those living more than 300 meters away, where fine particulate matter levels can be up to 10 times lower. We are all aware that breathing in second-hand cigarette smoke can lead to lung cancer. Cancer Research UK reports that while of course smoking creates the biggest risks, almost one in ten cases of lung cancer in the UK are in fact caused by outdoor air pollution. There is even growing evidence of a link between air pollution and diabetes. Diabetes.co.uk reports that,

while a direct link has yet to be proven there is a growing body of research, which suggests a causal link. A recent 2 year study by the Tufts University School of Medicine in the USA concluded that ‘people with type 2 diabetes who live next to heavy traffic, and take insulin, have increased inflammation’ and recent research in Germany concluded that traffic-related air pollution was linked to an increased risk of type 1 diabetes developing in children. Wherever we turn there is mounting evidence to suggest that we need to protect ourselves from the hidden silent killers in the air. The relationship between coronavirus, and other viruses like the flu, and the air we breathe is an important one. We are starting to learn more about this rapidly through necessity. At first our focus was on cleaning surfaces and hands to prevent viral transmission and face masks were not recommended. Then, we came to understand that droplets in our breath also carry the virus. These droplets tend to fall to the floor within 6 feet or so, which is one reason why the two-metre social distancing guidelines were introduced. Now, scientists have discovered that virus particles also hang around in the air in aerosol form and can infect those who breathe them in, making indoor air quality a priority focus. When considering air decontamination it’s important to first separate the cleansing truth from any wishful thinking or over-hyped claims. Few air purifiers will, for example capture and destroy the NOx and SOx gases created by exhaust and heating fumes and responsible for so much human misery.
