he Lehman College Tennis Team has just completed its regular season and is preparing for tournament play. The coach, Steve Schulman, has his team eager for victory in the CUNY Men’s Athletic tournament which is scheduled for May 11th and 12th at the National Tennis Center. The Lehman Lightning are led by Captain Greg Van Voorhis, who, playing the #1 position, has posted an impressive 10-4 record in singles play. Van Voorhis, a junior, went undefeated in Hudson Valley play, and was the top seed for last weekend’s Hudson Valley tournament. “Greg is an outstanding athlete and a great competitor. He has had a fantastic season,” says Coach Steve Schulman. John Orth, also a junior, is the team’s most improved player and is an avid student of the game, always working on improving his weaknesses. He has been steady at the #2 spot winning three singles matches and teaming with Van Voorhis for five doubles victories. Newcomer Justo Reyes has been a steady influence at the #3 spot with five singles victories. “Justo has been one of our most consistent players. He is always ready to play,” said Coach Schulman. Another newcomer, Peter Vitolo, has had a surprisingly good first season. The Lehman senior, who had never played tennis before, has come away with a 7-6 record and was a top seed in both Hudson Valley and CUNY tournaments. “Pete has worked hard on his game. I am very proud of what he has accomplished,” says Coach Schulman. Rounding out the Lightning are junior Amit Patel (3-1 singles record), freshman Gabriel Crespo (7-5 singles record), freshman Manny Meneses, and freshman Israel Lagesas. Meneses has come along very nicely for the team and may pull off an upset in

Lagesas is still a bit raw, but after only playing tennis for two months of his life, he now has enough fundamentals and experience to go along with his size and power to punish lower seeded opponents.

xpectations were high for the Lehman College women’s softball team, as they entered their first CUNY championship game in 17 years. A rocky second inning, in which Hunter College scored 11 runs, gave the Lightning a deficit they could not overcome. Lehman made a valiant effort, scoring 8 runs to cut the lead, but they could not get over the edge. The Lightning, winners of the Hudson Valley conference, now wait to hear if they will be selected to represent the conference in the ECAC tournament.
