Our Guiding Principle G.R.I.T (Growth, Resourcefulness, Innovation & Tenacity) At the heart of our school mission is the Guiding Principle of ‘GRIT’. This broad philosophy encompasses our beliefs and values and guides us in our decision making in all circumstances, irrespective of changes in our goals, strategies or type of work. Dr Angela Lee, an expert in this area, defines “GRIT” as “passion and perseverance for very long term goals. It is about having stamina and sticking with your future, day in, day out. Not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. It is living life like a marathon, not a sprint”.
Our Motto
Our Vision
Make Your Mark
A Community of Dynamic, Confident & Caring Learners
Our Mission To nurture agile minds and build character through holistic education
Our Values Respect: An individual who values and cares for self and others. Responsibility: An upright individual who understands his roles & does his best to fulfill them for home, community and nation Resilience: An individual who perseveres and makes the best of challenges.
Our Crest The TREE figure represents constant personal growth and resilience. It is also symbolises responsibility to the environment and its sustainability. The HEART formed by two hands symbolises Respect and Care for others, as well as Responsibility in carrying out our roles in family, school and community. The STAR communicates the motto and goal for students ‘Make Your Mark’. GOLD is the colour of excellence, while BLUE professionalism and stability. RED represents passion. Together, they portray a balanced, holistic education that empowers students to strive. The shape forms the letter M, representing MSS. It also represents the two doors of education opening to knowledge, opportunities and to the star ‘making your mark’ in the world.
Our Strategic Thrusts 1. Effective Dynamic & Confident Learners through Mastery and Applied Learning 2. Strengthen Moral & Performance Character 3. Nurture a Community of Dynamic and Caring Professionals 4. Leverage Collaborative Partnerships for School Excellence
The Marsilians March Marsiling our school, we pledge to strive, To forge ahead with spirits high. We embark on the road to success, With values and knowledge to progress. Marsiling our school, we shall profess, Make our mark and never rest. Life’s challenges are merely tests, In every quest, we’ll do our best. March, Marsilians, March! Onward, forward, make your mark! March, Marsilians, March! Together all with one heart!
Lyrics by Mr Isa Dahlan and Miss Seah Yi Fan Music arrangement by Mr Isa Dahlan

PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD Forging Ahead With Spirits High Marsiling Secondary School (MSS士林中学) forges ahead with spirits high! The Indoor Sports Hall is finally completed and has been in operation since 1 Feb 2021. This state-of-the-art construction, using environmentally friendly timbers, is aligned with the school’s niche area in environment education. I am confident that such an impressive addition to our up-to-date facilities, will benefit both the students and the community as a dual-use facility in the many years to come. Despite the pandemic, the school achieved outstanding academic results for all courses in 2020. New records were set for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Examinations, especially for the Secondary 4 Express. Their L1B5 score, at 23.4, was the best showing since 2011. 71 students from the Normal (Academic) course who sat for the ‘O’ level subjects also did exceptionally well with 42 of them scoring B4 or better; contributing to the impressive outcome of performing ‘Above Expectations’ [by the Ministry of Education (MOE)] in ELMAB3. Despite the partial cancellation of the National School Games (NSG) and the unique format for the Co-Curricular Activities (CCA), we continue to show our G.R.I.T (Courage and Resolve), as we proactively search for suitable alternatives to enrich the learning experiences for our students. Special Outdoor modules (Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) Outdoor Education) were organised for our Secondary 4 and 5 cohort. Our performing arts CCA continue to bring back excellent news from this year’s Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentations. Our Malay Dance was the very first performance to be streamed live by MOE. They did the school proud by receiving the highest possible accolade of Certificate of Distinction. In addition, our Concert Band obtained a Certificate of Accomplishment, our Chinese Orchestra, a Certificate of Accomplishment, our International Dance, a Certificate of Accomplishment and our Drama Club, a Certificate of Accomplishment. Our heartiest congratulations to all of our performing arts groups!
Similarly, our Sepak Takraw team entered the NSG as a newcomer and achieved splendid results by taking the 4th position in the nationwide competition. Our Secondary 3 can look forward to the modified Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) in September and the Secondary 2 cohort will have their outdoor day camp in May. Various face-to-face student development workshops for leadership development, ICT skills, study skills, StrengthsFinder etc., were also conducted to strengthen our students’ portfolios. Our Applied Learning Programme (ALP), the Environment Education, has almost fully resumed. More class-based activities (e.g. class-based vertical farm planting) and some on-line outdoor modules were conducted to fulfil the learning objectives. Our student leaders in Environment Education (Environment Champions) also participated in the NParks OneMillionTrees movement project. Plans are also being piloted to further integrate the LLP with ALP, leveraging on the islandwide network of park connectors. I am extremely pleased that the Elective Modules (EM) at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) at the polytechnics have resumed. We have completed three AEMs for 60 Secondary 3 Express and 3 Normal (Academic) students at various polytechnics in March. 31 of them were awarded a PASS with COMMENDATION certificate. To further strengthen our Education and Career Guidance (ECG) programmes, 16 speakers from various industries were invited to the school for our graduating cohort’s Careers Day. I can look forward to even more encouraging outcomes for our Early Admission Exercise (EAE) to both the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Polytechnics this year. (In 2020, 48.6% of our 4 Express and 5 Normal (Academic) cohort secured an EAE offer to polytechnic, while 55.6% of our 4 Normal (Academic) and 4 Normal (Technical) cohort was successful in the EAE to ITE). Another impactful strategy of the school is the provision of ample student leadership development opportunities. About 40% of our students assumed leadership positions in one of the six councils; the Student
Council, the Class Council, the Environment Council, the Outdoor Education Council, the CCA Council and the Character and Citizenship Education (National Education/ Cyber Wellness) Council. As in 2020, around 95% of our graduating students received the National Youth Achievement Silver Award (NYAA) and we are looking forward to impressive CCA grades for our 2021 cohort (in 2020, 96.3% of our students obtained either ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’). The School Advisory Committee (SAC) continues to generously support the school. Approval was obtained for an additional $25,000 to be set aside for 300 school-based awards to reward students who show improvement in their studies. The Marsiling Secondary School Alumni (MSSA) also continues to offer the MSSA Bursary Award ($250 each). 29 of such awards have been given since its inception to deserving graduates who are currently pursuing post-secondary education at the ITE, Polytechnics or Junior Colleges. The advantages of joining Marsiling Secondary School are obvious and we are ready to declare MSS as an Alternative Pathway for the primary school leavers who may face some disadvantages, especially in terms of academic results. We will help them to regain their confidence, discover their passion and strengths and progress into a post-secondary institution of their choice. We are forging ahead with spirits high. The Head of Departments (HODs), teachers and all staff have been working together as a synergistic team to ready ourselves for the Personal Digital Learning Programme (PDLP) and blended learning in Semester 2. We will overcome challenges and continue to strive to realise our vision to become ‘A Community of Dynamic, Confident and Caring Learners’ (school vision). With strong and generous support from the stakeholders, I am confident that MSS will thrive and ‘Make our Mark’ (school motto) in the many years to come. Thank you. Mr Goh Aik Choon Principal

SECONDARY 1 ORIENTATION The main objective of the Secondary 1 Orientation is to build the confidence and to assimilate the Secondary 1 students to secondary school life with his/her fellow peers. This is done through exciting and meaningful activities which enhance relationship building between peers and rapport building with the teachers. It also enhances the affiliation to the school. The Secondary 1 students were led through a series of activities, such as singing of the school song, team bonding activities, library visit and student leadership activities. The event also showed the ability of our Student Leaders from the various groups who stepped up to the challenge of leading their juniors.

Subject Briefings during Sec 1 PTM
The main objective of the Secondary 1 Principal Talk cum E-CCA sharing is to create a platform of introduction and relaying information to the Sec 1 parents and students about the school. This includes the information about the subjects and the CCAs that it offers. Due to the advisory of minimizing mass gathering, the school held its annual Sec 1PTM and CCA day online. The Principal spoke to the parents of the new Secondary 1 students and welcomed them into the school. Following that, the Head of Department for Physical Education spoke live via Zoom about CCA options available, and the other Heads of Departments spoke about the subjects offered to Secondary 1 students via uploaded videos in the school website.

MT Kuih Tasting with PSG
What’s the difference between soon kueh and ang ku kueh? How does puteri salat or vadai looks like? Well, our Sec 1 students were in for a treat and they had a joyful and engaging experience as they discovered and tasted the different sweetmeats in the Malay, Indian and Chinese community during the MT Fortnight this year. Indeed, there was a plethora of activities throughout the two weeks. Amidst the pandemic, students watched opera online, attended culture camp, took part in essay writing competitions and show and tell presentations. For the first time, the MT Fortnight Concert was held online as well. The concert, held on 12 March 2021, was a fantastic show, featuring students in action as they basked in the enjoyment of learning MT language and culture.

ADVANCED ELECTIVE MODULES AND/OR ELECTIVE MODULES Some of our secondary 3 students attended Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) conducted by the polytechnics during the March holidays. Module Titles: • News Reporting in the 21st Century • Steal the Show: The Killer Presentation • Manage My Money Such modules allow them to discover and explore their passions and interests, allowing them to make more informed decisions about their education and career plans after their graduation from secondary school. They are also able to acquire new skills and knowledge that are not taught in their subjects at secondary schools. Attending these AEMs enhances their portfolio, which will give them an edge over their peers when applying for diploma courses under the Early Admissions Exercise (EAE). During the End-of-Year Post Examination period, all Sec 2 and 3 NA and NT students participated in Category B Elective Modules. For Sec 2 students this year, their Elective Modules (EMs) are matched to their passion and interest as much as possible, through a survey administered via Student Learning Space (SLS). Through these EMs, students experience “real world” learning which enables them to make informed choices when pursuing further studies or deciding on a career path. On the other hand, the EMs chosen for Sec 3 students are related to their subjects learnt in school to help them apply their learning and get to know how the learning of these subjects are extended in higher institutes of learning.

EARTH DAY COMMEMORATION

Vertical Farm
Video production (behind the scene)
The Earth Day assembly programme was the key commemorative activity which seeks to raise environmental awareness and to instill in staff and students the importance of tackling climate change. The Environment Councillors (ECs) came up with a series of informative videos to share their knowledge about issues related to sustainability and how one can play a part to make small changes in adopting a low carbon lifestyle. The ECs also shared about the various green infrastructures in the school such as our new rainwater harvesting system. The assembly programme was further enhanced by the musical performance, “Earth Day Stomp”, where recyclables were used as musical instruments. Our school also has the tradition of dedicating a segment of our Earth Day’s programmes to show our appreciation to our school cleaners and Operation Support Officers (OSOs). Self-made cards and a token of appreciation were presented to the school cleaners and OSOs by the ECs. In addition, a variety of fresh and tasty vegetables were grown by our ECs and were harvested from our own vertical farm as part of our efforts for the school community to appreciate food sustainability. The event was concluded with all classes writing and putting up their Earth Day pledges on their class noticeboards. Exhibition

TEEN TALK 2021
LIVE.LANG.LIT WEEK
The English Language and Literature Department conducted its signature Teentalk program for all Secondary 3 students in term 2. Through the course of the Teentalk program, students learnt how to write and deliver engaging speeches, researched on topics that were close to their hearts, and created effective visual aids. This culminated in the annual Teentalk competition, where selected student representatives from each class took to the stage to showcase their research and public speaking prowess. This year, Le Thi Kim Quyen from 3E1 was crowned the Teentalk 2021 overall champion. Muhammad Rifqi Bin Ariffin of 3N3 was awarded the Commendable award and Teens’ choice award, having been selected as the favourite speaker by his schoolmates via the M.EL.T Instagram poll. Regine Ng of 3E2 won the Most Presentable slides award, Nabilah Binti Abdullah of 3N2 won the Most Interesting speaker award, Huzaifah Bin Salim of 3T1 won the Most Researched Content award and Nurul Jannah Binte Nesiran of 3N1 won the Most Eloquent Speaker award.

“Borrow me your pen!” This is a common mistake made in Singapore amongst students. To help address this, the English Department organised the annual L.L.L Week (Live. Lang. Lit. Week) in the first week of Term 2. This week was specially dedicated to help raise awareness and spark curiosity and desire amongst students to improve their standard of English. From Tuesday 23rd to Friday 26th March, the school was engaged with activities to help students get excited and motivated about improving their English. The Theme of L.L.L. Week 2021 was “Standard English- Let’s get it right!” In addition, our English Department’s Instagram page (@m.el.t) served as a platform to increase publicity as well as promote more learning of English beyond the classroom setting. The Library and the concourse also served to extend the learning opportunities for our students. Based on the feedback received, the students generally enjoyed themselves and have become more aware about the importance of Standard English!

This year, our Secondary 3 students participated in the Unseen Poetry Debate event, and for the first time, they triumphed over the opposition. Hopefully, this inspires all students to keep the flame of learning language and literature alive.

INTER-DISCIPLINARY PROJECTS
Lit-Art Inter-Disciplinary Projects
LIT-ART IDP The Lit-Art IDP aims to adopt an integrative approach to the teaching and learning of the two subjects through strengthening literacy skills, critical thinking and creativity through the use of visual images and living experiences for more in-depth comprehension of Literature text. We believe that this provides a firm foundation for students to learn complementary skills that will aid them in producing quality work in both subjects. To create a new learning experience for our Secondary 1 cohort who is new to the subject of Literature, we adopt a multimodal approach in order to help them adapt quickly to writing a coherent response, with the help of some artistic prompts.
SS-MATH IDP For our upper secondary Social Studies syllabus, a substantial time is devoted to examining current societal issues and trends. Hence, it is a natural fit for both the Mathematics and Humanities departments to design an IDP (Interdisciplinary Project) that equip students with data collection and analytical skills fit for examining a societal issue critically.

MATHEMATICS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME
RAM
iABLE
In alignment with the Secondary Mathematics Curriculum in Singapore, our school aims to provide students with real life experiences by applying their mathematical concepts that they learned in the classroom with the use of the personal learning devices that the students have to solve real-world situations. For our Secondary 1 programme, the teachers created and facilitated iABLE (integrated Activity-Based Learning Experiences) lessons using an online app Deck.Toys to make the learning of Mathematics enjoyable, relevant and authentic. For example, one of the iABLE lessons involves getting students to plan for a trip where they need to find the best deal for air tickets using the Tripadvisor website and also to calculate the expenses in different currencies for the entire trip to decide if the budget given is sufficient. In these student-centered lessons, students carry out rich tasks through modelling, solving real life problems and communicating their reasoning logically. In their groups or pairs, they pace their learning progression from one task to the next, with increasing degrees of knowledge construction and making connections to their prior knowledge of mathematical concepts. This programme aims to build students’ confidence and foster their interest in the learning of Mathematics while appreciating its value in making informed decision in everyday life.
Our Secondary 2 Express and Normal [Academic] students are given a task, which they need to resolve with the mathematical knowledge that they have acquired in class. For example, in one of the tasks, prices of the vegetables and seafood of various places are given. Students need to analyze and interpret the data to sift out useful information that are needed for decision making to fulfil the criteria given in the question. In another lesson, students are tasked to create the floor plan of their classroom with their iPads. By working in pairs, the students make use of the measuring app in the ipads to take measurement and draw their floor plan with the suitable scale in mind. With these real life experiences, students are able to communicate their reasoning and connection through the various mathematical tasks. They can appreciate the usefulness of Mathematics in solving problems in real-world contexts.

At MOE’s Committee of Supply Debate in March 2020, MOE launched the National Digital Literacy Programme (NDLP) for our schools to help students strengthen their digital literacy. One of the components of the NDLP is the introduction of the Personalised Digital Learning Programme (PDLP) for all secondary school students, whereby every secondary school student will own a school-prescribed Personal Learning Device (PLD) by end-2021. As a Phase 1 school for the PDLP, this year was indeed a very busy year for our staff and students as we embarked on this programme and got our school ready for the new era of teaching and learning with PLDs (iPads).
