Bates County COVID UPDATE

August 27, 2021 Positive Cases Reported: 1971 Active & On Isolation: 64 Deaths (confirmed by death certificate): 44 Total Negative Tests Reported: 21,032

Federal Agencies Raid El Charro last Wednesday In the early morning hours of August 25th, a team consisting of federal officers in conjunction with local law enforcement assembled at an undisclosed location and were deployed to several locations in Butler including the El Charro Restaurant on west 52 highway. This action was part of a wide area effort to execute a series of search warrants at 10 locations in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office,

Western Missouri District, a federal RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) indictment alleges that 17 of the 19 co-defendants sought were part of an organized criminal enterprise from July 2003 to Aug. 10, 2021, that smuggled Mexican, Guatemalan, and El Salvadoran nationals who were not authorized to live or work in the United States. Conspirators allegedly harbored them in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and

Oklahoma. The ringleaders of the operation created a network of restaurants operating as LLCs in states throughout the Midwest and were supplied with undocumented workers to staff positions within. According to the indictment, conspirators did not pay the appropriate state and federal payroll taxes, overtime wages, and worker’s compensation for the unauthorized employees. In addition to smuggling and harboring

undocumented workers, the indictment alleges the racketeering activity included fraud (in connection with identification documents), fraud and misuse of visas and other documents, and money laundering. Members and associates of the criminal enterprise shielded unauthorized employees from detection by immigration authorities by eliminating records of their employment, paying them by personal check and in cash, failing to maintain complete and accurate Forms I-9 and required wage and hour reports for these employees, assisting them with the acquisition of false identification docu-

ments (such as Social Security numbers and alien resident documents), and making false statements to immigration authorities and law enforcement officials. One local arrest included Oscar Adrian Molina-Angulo, 38, a citizen of Mexico residing in Butler, Mo. Molina-Angulo of Butler, Mo. He is facing 9 counts including racketeering conspiracy, false representation of a social security number, conspiracy to commit identification document fraud, unlawful production and transfer of identification documents, and hiring and employing illegal aliens. Molina-Angulo bonded out on Monday of this week.

One Dead Following Aircraft Incident Near Adrian

Bates County Sheriff’s Deputies were summoned to search a corn field northwest of Adrian on August 23rd on a report of a downed aircraft, which was eventually located. The site was described as near FF highway and somewhat difficult to access due to heavy crops and vegetation. A drone was sent up to confirm the exact location as EMT’s and fire/

A retirement party was held last week for Roger Pruden, who dutifully held the position of Bates County Assessor for the past 24 years. He can now shift his focus to his cattle, baling hay, showing his horse... actually whatever he pleases. He was presented with a signed resolution from State Representative Patricia Pike as seen here during the celebration held at the Bates county administration building. This would be a good time to welcome successor Carl Bettels, who assumes the role of assessor September 1st.

Archie man dies in head on collision

Sunday evening around 6:05 p.m. first responders were called to a two vehicle fatality accident on Missouri 291 Highway at 215th Street in rural Cass County. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2020 Chevrolet driven by 30 year old Delbert L. Hannah of Archie, Missouri struck a 2020 Dodge Ram driven by 61 year old Donald E. Beckerdite of Raymore, Missouri head-on. Hannah was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported by the medical examiner’s office. Mr. Beckerdite sustained serious injuries and was transported to Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment.

rescue personnel were called in only to discover the pilot, Daniel L. Smith, 72 of Adrian, was deceased. No other persons were aboard the aircraft. While a formal investigation is being conducted by the NTSB and other parties, information may be slow forthcoming- Mid America Live has interviewed several witnesses at the scene and there is spec-

ulation that the pilot may have had some type of issue (medical or aircraft related) shortly after takeoff and possibly did attempt to land the plane, as it did not appear to have damage consistent with a typical crash. An autopsy is pending and Mid America Live will publish the official reports as they become available.

Kelly Phillips Honored

Bates County Memorial Hospital’s new Unit 1 ambulance was dedicated to the memory of Kelly Phillips, paramedic, who served as the Director of Ambulance, Emergency Services and Outpatient Clinics at BCMH. His career with the hospital spanned 38 years. He also served as a Lieutenant with the Bates County Sheriff Department, and as an entry team commander and tactical medic. Among the first to view the dedication plate in memory of Kelly Phillips was his family, pictured from left: his wife, Linda Phillips, daughter Megan Reno, son-in-law Jerrett Reno, and their daughter Aspen. Megan is a Physician Assistant with Family Care Clinics of BCMH, and Jerrett is a paramedic for BCMH Ambulance services. Last Man Standing

Taking a walk around the Butler square a half century ago and doing the same today, you’ll find LeNeve’s TV & Appliance in the same locationmaking them Butler’s oldest business still operating under original ownership. Inside you’ll find friendly folks, eagerly waiting to help you find what you need- Don and JoAnn LeNeve. That store is LeNeve’s TV & Appliance on the west side, and with it comes some 65 years of business history centered here in Bates County. From their humble beginnings, Rich Hill native JoAnn Littlefield and Don LeNeve of Hume were married February 11th, 1956 and just a few months later the newlyweds opened their first store in Rich Hill. Reflecting back, the LeNeve’s smiled as they recalled building rent of about $22 a month. “Times were sure different then” chuckled Don. “In those days, we mostly sold radios and televisions. And did service and repairs. A service call was $2.50 plus parts of course”. As their business grew, the LeNeve’s made the move to Butler and the northeast corner of the Butler square was the chosen spot for a short time. “In those days, the square was the place to be,” Don said with a grin. “It didn’t make sense to be anywhere else”. Then, in 1960 they made their final move to their present location at 4 N. Delaware street. From there forward, things moved right along. Don and JoAnn welcomed a daughter, Tammy (Heiman) into the family. Later, Don’s broth-

er Marion joined forces in the store, bringing appliances into the offering of the LeNeve lineup. At this point, the store fully consumed both halves of the building, appliances on one side, TV’s and electronics on the other, with storage and service technicians in the back. For quite some time, this was the arrangement. But like everything else, times change. By the 1980’s, big box stores began offering televisions and electronics, which was less incentive for folks to make their way to the Butler square for a great deal. Likewise, the television repair business has gone mostly by the wayside, plus there is heavy competition in the new appliance business. Anyone else might have considered closing the doors a long time ago- but being resourceful, the LeNeve’s began to transform the family operation to better fit the market available. With these changes, came a little fun as JoAnn pointed out- “Some time ago, I took over the south half of the building” as she points to her inventory “JoAnn’s Gifts and collectibles”. And sure enough, you’ll find things there you simply won’t find elsewhere in the area, and certainly not in box stores. Running her business includes a couple of trips each year to purchase more inventory and the smile on her face is proof she’s passionate about it. Today, the LeNeve’s have shifted their appliance business to mostly include new ‘scratch and dent’ inventory. The benefit? Substantial Continue to Page 8

We’re not sure what the Miami R-1 school record is, but this has to be close… four cousins attending the same preschool class at the same time. They are L to R: Gabby Erickson, daughter of Mitchell and Jennifer Erickson; Brigham Nieder, son of Josh and Brittany

Nieder; Tinley Nieder, daughter of Colby and Amanda Nieder and Myla Nieder, daughter of Brandon and Carli Nieder. The quartet was quite happy to begin their first day together as seen here.

Missouri OK’s “to-go” alcoholic beverages

JEFFERSON CITY – The waiver that allowed Missouri restaurants to sell “to-go” alcoholic drinks beginning on April 14, 2020, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, became permanent on Aug. 28. The administrative waiver was granted because many restaurants were severely strained as business dropped off or shifted to take out during 2020. In Missouri, unless they contain an emergency provision, most new laws take effect on Aug. 28. Before the waiver, to-go alcohol had to be sold in its original package. The new law (SB-126) means that mixed drinks can be sold for off-premises consumption provided: The alcohol container is durable, leak-proof, Continue to Page 10

Tragic Accident Saddens Community What’s Up by LeRoy Cook

Now that meteorological summer has passed with the end of August, pilots hopefully will begin to see relief from the heat and turbulence. By the end of September, we’ll be worrying about carburetor icing and using priming fuel to get started on chilly mornings. Traffic was sparse last week, other than for the comings and goings of the aerial applicators, flying their Turbine AirTractor sprayplanes. It’s a tough and hazardous job, but necessary to preserve crops and keep pests away. Other aircraft observed were a Cessna Skyhawk trainer from UMC at Warrensburg, a Beech Bonanza V35 and a Cirrus SR-22. Local pilots taking to the air included Gerald Bauer, flying the Cessna Skyhawk, CFI Eric Eastland, taking a student to Tulsa and Springfield in a Cessna 150, and your scribe, retrieving a Cessna 172 from Pleasanton. Recent pilot Rebekah Knight flew a Cessna 150 to brush up her skills as well. Another new private pilot was created last Friday, when Bill Sparks joined the ranks by completing his practical test with Examiner David Bradley. It’s been a long, expensive process over the last four years, but Bill can finally join his son Ryan in flying the family Cessna Skyhawk. Congratulations, Bill! The pilot community was saddened by the tragic accident that took the life of our friend

Dan Smith last week. As with most aviation mishaps, a chain of circumstances apparently led to the fatal incident, other than one simple explanation, but the National Transportation Safety Board investigation will be thorough and complete. For now, we can only extend deepest sympathies to the family and friends feeling their loss. Textron Aviation ran its Beechcraft Denali (formerly called a Cessna Denali) pressurized turboprop last week. A direct competitor to the Pilatus PC-12, the Denali is expected to fly later this year and get into production next year. Apparently Textron thought it would fit better as a single-engine option to their Beech King Air line, which now has only two models, the 260 and 360 versions. The 50-year-old King Air 90 design was dropped last spring. Last week, we asked you to tell us why airplane cockpits adopted the control yoke or wheel, over the old joystick system. It was because cabin airplanes replaced the old open-cockpit types, with side-by-side seating and doors for boarding. The stick was in the way, particularly when lady passengers were carried. For next week, we want to know the reason the hurricane hunter squadrons use the Lockheed P-3 Orion airplane to fly into the storms. You can send your answer to [email protected].

and sealable, and does not exceed 128 ounces; The customer must have ordered and purchased a meal simultaneous with the liquor purchase; No more than two alcohol drinks may be sold per meal serving; The licensee must provide a dated receipt for the meal and alcohol beverage(s); and The sealed alcohol container must either be: Placed in a one-time-use, tamperproof, transparent bag which must be securely sealed, or; The container opening must be sealed with tamperproof tape. The law does not allow liquor licensees to sell mixed drinks in typical “to-go” cups or other containers having a lid with a sipping hole or an opening for straws. Senate Bill 126 also extends the hours during which alcohol can be sold by the drink and at package stores on Sundays. Liquor licensees permitted to make Sunday sales will legally be able to sell alcohol from 6 a.m. Sunday until 1:30 a.m. Monday, the same hours that apply during the rest of the week.

Cardinals Announce No Football this Year Editor’s note- While Clinton is not normally part of our news coverage area, the following story, which gained notoriety on Kansas City television, is a super hot topic in our area with local schools and coaches crying foul over the decision: Clinton High School is announcing today that they will not participate in Varsity Football for the 2021 season. Due to the lack of adequate number of varsity level players, concerns for physical safety of athletes and the need to restart a program that has lost 31 varsity games in a row, this difficult decision was made. CHS will declare to the Missouri State High School Activities Association today that they will not participate in the Class 3 District and State competition for this year. As part of this one year program decision, Clinton High School will participate in Junior Varsity level Football only for the ‘21 season, including already scheduled conference games. The goal of this decision is to spend a year developing a team of primarily younger players to more appropriately compete at the varsity level in the future. Head Coach Kevin LaFavor said, “In the longterm development of football in Clinton, we felt like this decision needed to be made in the best interest of our student-athletes. Competing at the junior varsity level only for a year gives us time to develop our players both mentally and physically. This will give us the restart needed to be competitive starting with the ‘22 football season.” Clinton High School and district-level administrators agree that this is what is best for the football program at this time. At a meeting Monday night, Activities Director Alex Johnson worked with CHS football staff, parents and players to work through any concerns. Johnson stated, “We want our student-athletes and coaches in the sport of football to find success both on and off the field. This decision helps them to develop as young men both in the sport of football and as leaders for our school and community.” - Courtesy Clinton High School

Dr. Jaswinder Singh, Oncologist (center); with Dr. Jim Miller (from left), Karen Landers, RN, Brandi Sampson, NP and Moied Riaz, NP. A board of medical professionals has been formed at Bates County Memorial Hospital to collaborate on cancer patient cases. The Tumor Board was created to provide a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, bringing together oncology, radiology and pathology specialists to aid in decision-making and improve care coordination. The Tumor Board gives our primary care providers a setting to discuss their patients’ cases with the multidisciplinary team. The goal is to prevent and diagnose cancers, plan treatment and evaluate decisions, as well as to help establish the best treatment plan for our patients without having to travel to facilities far outside of the community. Any of the physicians or mid-levels on the Tumor Board may refer a patient to the tumor conference. Data is collected and sent to radiologists and pathologists on the board, who then prepare films, slides and reports to be presented at the monthly Tumor Board

Conference. Members give input during the conference and help in the decision-making process. The oncologist and the primary care provider discuss items specific to each patient, enhancing continuity of care. For patients, there is comfort knowing their primary care provider, who often has a better understanding of their health history, is collaborating with oncologists and other medical professionals to coordinate their best care and treatment. The first Tumor Board Conference was held at BCMH on July 28 and will meet once a month.
