Message from the Subject Faculty What happens when seventeen/sixteen young minds work day and night for six consecutive days in the name of a college course module? You read it right. The Fashion Communication students of semester VI are ready with their first commercial magazine and these super-imaginative design enthusiasts have accomplished this task with tremendous zeal and efficacy. TRIPPER/ NEOSTYL is the amalgamation of all the knowledge they have gained in their three years of stay in NIFT Campus, Bhubaneswar. From inception of idea to the final output; the journey of making of the magazine is worth mentioning. Though it is a part of course curriculum, the final product is at par with the well established magazines in its genre. “TRIPPER” is a travel magazine and covers all aspects of traveling; be it budget travel, budget lodging, food on the go, phone photography or travel tips. “NEOSTYL” is a lifestyle magazine covering all aspects of lifestyle; be it affordable fashion, green fashion, travel, beauty, food or inspiration. As a subject faculty, my role was to show them the path. It is them who set milestones on this path. I congratulate Team KnowMads/Curious Crew for the successful completion of such a wonderful project. Hopefully, the experiences they have gained with this ambitious project will be helpful in all their future endeavors. All the best! One of the trends we love right now is dressing up old bottles and jars with rope or ribbon, and we decided to give it a go ourselves. We took some old wine bottles from sleek to shabby chic with just a little yarn.

Lit the jars

Mason jar candles are a great way to recycle old mason jars. These glass candle holders are gorgeous and would be so easy to create. They can be used outdoors or indoors, and look great lining the pathway leading up to your home.

Paint up the driftwoods !

Walking along the beach, you might not even notice the pieces of driftwood that turn up around you. However, these inconspicuous gifts from Mother Nature can turn your home into something beautiful. Just paint them up.

Written By: Aakash Sarkar It is almost that time of the vacation when people pack their backup and book their flight or train tickets, but if you are road trip obsessed just like me why not unleash the professional bike rider and go on a solo trip or with your bunch of friends. Our Bike expert Akash Sarkar have listed the specification of two budget friendly motorcycles for covering long distance road trips. The bikes have been selected on the basis of mileage and comfort level.

Avenger 220 CC The 2018 Bajaj Avenger Street 220 and Cruise 220 sport a with new headlamp design with LED DRLs. The styling on either model is different. The body decals are new on the Street 220, while the Avenger Cruise 220 gets a new moon white paint scheme. In addition, the analog console has been replaced by a digital pod - with an orange backlight on the Street and blue on the Cruise. The unit is equipped with a speedometer, two trip meters, clock and even a service reminder. The Avenger Cruise also gets a tall windscreen as standard, while a small fly screen has been added on the Street version.

Mechanically, the cruiser remains the same drawing power from the 220 cc single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine that churns out 18.7 bhp and 17.5 Nm of peak torque. The motor comes paired to a 5-speed gearbox. The bike continues to use telescopic forks up front and a dual shock setup at the rear. Braking duties are handled by a single front disc and a rear drum brake. CB Hornet 160 R The CB Hornet 160R is easily the best-looking bike in its segment. With its macho look, which Honda was able to achieve by using bulky body panels, especially the fuel tank, Honda plans to target buyers who are style conscious. While the fascia still reminds us of the CB Unicorn Dazzler, the side profile is the best way to look at this motorcycle. However, when it comes to the rear of the CB Hornet 160R, Honda has done a brilliant job with the X-shaped tail lamp. The CB Hornet 160R is powered by a 163cc singlecylinder air-cooled engine that produces 15.7bhp at 8500rpm and peak torque of 14.76Nm at 6500rpm. This engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox. The bike gets disc brakes at both ends along with the Combined Braking System instead of the standard disc-drum setup. The front brake is larger than the CB Unicorn 160’s, at 276mm. The rear disc size is 220mm. The bike rides on a 100/80-17 front tire and 140/80-17 rear tire, which matches the widest in the segment. The fuel tank capacity stands at 12 liters and the kerb weight at 142kg for the CBS version and 140 for the standard version. This bike is offered in two variants – single disc and dual disc with CBS. It is available in five color options – orange, white, red, blue and black. The Hornet is priced at Rs 81,863 (ex-showroom). There is a CB Hornet 160R ‘Special Edition’ waiting in the wings for 2018 and it gets different graphics to let you know that it is special. Next, it gets optional single-channel ABS. You can’t have both CBS and ABS; however, the variants have been split into front disc/rear drum, CBS, ABS and DLX ABS - the last variant is the only one to get a rear disc brake. In addition to this, it gets an LED headlamp, and a hazard light switch where one would ordinarily have got an engine kill switch.

The

Upcoming Band Band musician

Bringing their own style Written By Mukund Choudhary

With the emergence of such wide variety of music, people are drifting away from the real music which being yourself playing as the beats go along quoted by Mr Vishal Das, the lead guitarist of Anarchy Band. This band is formed by a group of undergraduate students from National Institute of Fashion technology Bhubaneswar who believe that there are no boundaries which restrict their music style and they are always looking forward to explore more. From performing in several cities till wining few most prestigious awards in national levels, this band Is not only enthusiast for music when they are on stage but also have a passion to show it in their daily life. Miss Meenal, the lead drummer said that “ Music is not only my hobby it is the major part of my life which I live each second.” She even said that, we had a great start to this year with the spectrum and several colleges who invited us to participate in the band performances. Our luck has surely been on a good side or else getting so many trophies within such a short spam is not an easy task, especially when your opponents are as good as you are. All our band performances have a lot of differences as we love to explore on variety of music and I guess that can be something that makes us different from the others. After winning their first National Trophy in IIT Bhubaneswar they did not stop there and outshined the stage by winning first prize in ITER, SHRI SHRI UNIVERTSITY, BGU, XUBIA and AIIMS. These achievements are truely remarkable, especially when they got a recognition from Resonance Music Studio in Bengaluru to record a music album with them. Their music style varies from Rock Music to low beats songs that is why they are the perfect type of people to play music in all type of occasions. The band does not have a proper label till now but even Rome wasn’t built in a day. With a new Facebook official page, the band has given its fans the opportunity to interact with them or catch up with old their old and new concert videos. Despite the band’s growing popularity, the members continue to struggle with drawbacks such as a lack of budget to purchase new equipment’s for recording and playing but they are making the best use of what they got till the time they have jobs to fulfill their more necessities. When they are not making music, band members have other activities to juggle. Being college going students it is always a bigger task for them to manage everything but their diligence and willpower have kept their band together. The popularity of digital streaming media gave Anarchy artists a chance to get a recognition from a more broader audience but despite all the present status and glory we hope they still have a lot to accomplish and more trophies to add on to their cases. The power of

SOCIAL MEDIA An interview with Prof. Satya Shankar Banerjee - Robin Kumar

“If Facebook was a country, then more than 1/3rd of the world population would be a part of it” said Prof. Satya Shankar Banerjee of Department of Fashion Management Studies, NIFT Bhubaneswar, in an exclusive interview conducted by Mr. Robin Kumar on his recent study about “Fashion and Social Media”. The enthusiasm with which Prof. Banerjee introduced us to his research was enough for us to set our pen on fire and share the information with you all.

What is your opinion about Social Media?

and human values are diluted?

There are nearly 7.5 Billion people on this planet out of which some more than 3 Billion people are using Internet. With more than 2.5 Billion users or nearly 70% of all internet users across the world Social Media which is a game changer for today. Facebook is dominating the Social media space with more than 1.79 billion monthly active users (MAU’s) followed by tweeter and linkedin, and is capable of changing governments.

No, Internet is a human’s right (as said by Mark Zuckerberg during his 2016 visit to IIT Delhi) and, in many ways, it is helping in human development. For example, with the power of information people are increasingly becoming aware about their rights. Many African countries are getting developed because of Internet (local markets are connecting with global markets) and any good tool can be used for a negative purpose as well, so is social media but it is upon us whether we want to see the negative aspects or focus in the positive.

With the growth of internet and digitalization, do you think social structures are changing

36

NEOSTYL

NEOSTYL

37

points by which it is supporting the society and resulting in meaningful connectivity in Business and Social life. Social networking sites like wikipedia and youtube are providing affordable knowledge to millions who do not have access to classrooms. From cooking to gardening, for everything a lot of content is available for viewing and acquiring new skills.

Tell us about the research you are working on? I am working on how “Social Media can affect Fashion business”. Researches have proved that social media has speeded up the rate of Fashion consumption . Now, a runway trend in Newyork, in no time hits the streets of India, thanks to Fast Fashion brands however its information reaches even faster, may be, in minutes through Social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram and Tweeter. Brand to Consumer interactions has got a new dimension by the onset of this new media. Today, almost every Fashion brand as well as consumer has their Facebook page and wall where they post a lot of content. My objective is to develop a method by which such information can be mined and processed in order to Forecast upcoming Fashion Trends so that it brings more profit in the fashion industry and reduce massive wastage.

What is the current way of Fashion Forecasting and how your research challenges the existing methods? At present Fashion is a business of intuitions and investing in a new forecast is like betting on a horse before race. There are high chances that the forecast goes wrong. Globally the size of the fashion business is nearly 2.3 trillion in US dollars and out of this, half of the industry, globally, is suffering because of the wrong forecasts using the existing methods. This is the reason why large number of fashion brands go on discounts, perhaps fashion is the only business where you have such deep discounts. You don’t have such discounts in any other business’s like automobiles, fast-moving consumer goods, electronics or even food. On the other hand the uniqueness of fashion business is that if the forecast is wrong, the products goes on discounts and retailers suffer losses. A part of this loss, travels backward in the supply chain to manufacturers who are 38

NEOSTYL

who are paid low prices. My work is to find the right forecasting tool using social networking based information. Almost 350 million pictures are uploaded on Facebook everyday globally and along with each picture there is one product information, that is what people are wearing. My argument is, can this data which is generated in terms of pictures and videos be mapped properly and can we develop some models which can be used to do the right forecast in real time. For example at Bhubaneswar in Odisha by people’s picture posted today we can find which is the popular color for the day. What are the top three colors which peoplevof Bhubaneswar are wearing, out of hundreds of colors so many colors can be eliminated and you can focus only on those colors. You can even tell the styles, necklines and type of sleeves people prefer. Mining and analysis of such data can produce astonishing results for Fashion brands.

What is the approx. duration it will take for the idea to come into function? I have already developed a model with a small sample size and I could rightly forecast some products also. I have written a paper recently which is which is under review with a reputed academic journal that how Indian product like Kurti can be formed by looking at the pictures of the Indian women in a particular geography through Facebook. Maybe it will take around a year to completely publish the results and once the results are published it will become globally accepted. In future, someone may come up with a computer software based on our model and may be accepted and implemented in industry.

What is your vision of future regarding this research? It’s an interesting question, now what I see is future of fast fashion is mostly about going digital (except a niche market for Handmade products). There would be technological interventions everywhere from production to supply chain and retail to forecasting, the current spin of the industry is towards artificial intelligence. One company in Bangalore named Stylumia is the first company in the world, working in the area of artificial intelligence in fashion industry. I am also preparing one case study with that company.

Social media can affect Fashion business

Prof. Satya Shankar Banerjee

NEOSTYL

39

So, such activities in the future will be on the rise because people will start getting results and the accuracy of forecasts will increase, Investments will decrease and margins will become healthier. I think in future forecasting will be a combination of technology as well as human mind but technology will help you to eliminate 90 options from 100 options which will not be selling if you invest on them and the 10 options which are left, maybe a forecaster with some eye for market taste can give you the top 5 products.

Will this research result in an end to all the ‘End of Season Sales’ or ‘Deep Discounts’? If you look at fashion as a business, the difference between cost of the product and its selling price is almost 4- 5 times for any brand. Suppose they procure a shirt for Rs 200, they end up selling it for minimum Rs 1000. Why so high markups? Because of the forecasting errors taken into

40

Crafts of Odisha represent the rich artistic heritage inherent in this eastern Indian state, which have been practised by the dexterous craftsmen of Odisha since ancient ages. The coastal state of Odisha has received royal patronage in the past, which is amongst the crucial factors which have marked this area as one of the leading states in manufacturing of various handicrafts. The rich tradition of Odishan crafts date back over a thousand years, while the striking feature of the crafts of Odisha is the rare combination of utility and beauty. Each craft is a masterpiece in itself. The crafts are a classic combination of modern refinements and the traditional threads which bear the checkered past.

WOODEN TOYS Wooden Toys are carved wooden figures of birds and animals, Jagannath, which are inspired by the Famous Pattachitra art, which turn out to be a memorable take away by tourists visiting Puri. These wooden toys though succeed in luring an art lover to buy it are on a verge of extinction because Banshidhar Maharana happens to be the last artisan who specializes in wooden toy making.

COW DUNG TOYS Cow dung toys are the oldest art which is being practiced past ages for they happen to be a cheap and an an antiseptic substitute to wooden and metal toys. The toys are shaped in motif of birds, animals and companions of lord Jagannath. Since cow dung is considered holy thus cow dung toys enjoy a great deal of value at local exhibitions and displays held at Raghurajpur itself.

PAPER MACHE Odisha has a folk theatre known as ‘jatra’ whose characters are made using wood and paper. Based on their characterization, masks are made using paper mache technique, which has given rise to this art form. Paper mache masks are figures inspired from Pattachitra, for example; face mask of animals, birds, gods and goddesses etc. The masks made by Paper mache are strong and durable.

APPLIQUE Applique is the craft which is passed down from one generation to another, from a father to his son/ daughter and is successfully been carried forward in the village of Pipli which is located in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. The craft which is born with stitches and famous for its beautiful colours have successfully been able to spread its wings all across the world. The applique work of Pipili is probably the most well-known handicraft in Puri and surrounding areas. Almost each and every family living in Pipili is engaged in this craft. This craft is the livelihood of most people here.

SEASHELL The sea shell craft is a popular craft in Puri. The beaches of Puri are full of seashells that are used for making products for decoration. Small shops selling seashell products are a normal sight on the beaches of Puri and outside the Jagannath temple. The products are completed by engraving on them, by painting or by both. The pieces show variations from the life of lord Jagannath and other elements of the Hindu culture. Engraved and painted lamp-shades and other intricate products are made by very few; highly skilled craftsmen.

DHOKRA Dhokra art is one of the earliest known methods of non-ferrous metal casting known to human civilization. The oldest form of metal casting `Dhokra` is popular because of its primitive simplicity. It is a very important handicraft because of its more or less exclusive folk characters. Dhokra is notable for its strength and shapeliness of design. Its motifs are mostly drawn from folk culture.

GOLDEN GRASS Kaincha a rich yellowish variety of grass is generally grown in swampy areas during rainy season. The products of this variety of grass owe their origin to the rich golden lustre of grass which is appropriately called golden grass. Golden grass weaving today retains its roots as a home-based industry. Locally available material and existing skills are leveraged to generate income for a family. The production process requires simple, low cost tools. Even the most intricate weaves require little more than a needle with a wooden handle and a blade. With time things change and so does the processes and techniques. So with time we got to see that with orders and adaptations to modern demands, the finishing touches are given to the handicraft by adding embellishments. NEOSTYL

How to master POP colours this summer By Gunjan

Sunny weather prompts us to ditch our neutrals and liven things up with color. Our expert  recommends experimenting with a touch of eye-catching tint, such as a vivid liner or a pop lip colour.   Pick the pigment that contrasts most with your complexion for the biggest punch, and pair it with a soft cheek color and black mascara to get the look.

Tips and tricks

When trying vibrant shades prime the area with translucent powder, so that the color wears evenly all day. Aloe vera gel: If you suffer sunburn or your skin is sensitive, aloe vera gel is the go to product. Put some aloe vera gel in ice tray and just pop them out once they’re frozen and rub it all over your body, this will cool your body down and will treat any sunburns that you have. We all love when our skin looks bronzy, glowy in summers, but our foundation sometimes make us look flat and not that glowy. Instead of getting high-end foundations you can add illuminator or tint of highlighter in your foundation to get the glowy look in summers. 62

The Inner Peace Written By Bhumika Vaidya

“A business is successful not only when you earn a lot of profit but it is when you create enough goodwill so that your customers feel the urge to use your services again and again” said “Sampurna Sharma ”. The Fashion Communication students of NIFT took a challenge to run a business successfully for a week to understand the working of the market. We believe massage is an integral part of personal care, mental health, injury prevention and your overall health and wellbeing. Between running our own businesses anchored at desks and our regular demanding fitness routines, we both experience regular aches and pains, injuries, headaches, tension and stress, all of which are significantly relieved and often entirely eliminated with regular sessions. That’s why together we’ve created this beginner’s guide to massage therapy for prospective massage patients to introduce the practice to those who have never tried it and those who should try

it again. As our clients can attest, we enthusiastically recommend massage therapy to anyone and everyone as a regular part of your health routine. Traveler or not, find out why massage therapy can become your new favorite practice for health and happiness. Our spa expert Bhumika Vadia has listed few misconceptions about spas with facts to prove them wrong. MISCONCEPTION: Massage is only for relaxation. FACT: Massage is absolutely for relaxation, but that’s not all. Massage can alleviate chronic pain, restore restful sleep, promote mental health, reduce stress, aid in healing post injury or surgery, and so much more. MISCONCEPTION: Massage is too invasive and touchy-feely. FACT: You dictate how intimate you want your massage to be. If you’d prefer to remain clothed and/or restrict the areas

your therapist touches, that’s ok! Massage is an intimate form of treatment, sure, but therapists are qualified professionals and will handle your privacy and comfort as such, and if you are undressed, your private areas will remain covered with a sheet or towel during the entire appointment. MISCONCEPTION: Massage is too expensive and not worth the cost. FACT: Yes, massage therapy is considered a luxury for most. But if you have chronic pain or other health issues that can be alleviated with massage, it is a worthwhile investment in your health that can save you the financial, physical and emotional costs of future injuries, medications and more extreme treatments, like surgery, down the road. If you don’t have health issues, massage can still be worth the expense as a way to relax, relieve stress and feel good simply because you deserve it!

Q- What problem came to your mind that you planned to open a spa business inside the campus? Actually, we were observing from few days that NIFT students are working really hard both mentally and physically. Q. What types of massage or spa you had provide? We offered head massage, back massage, hand massage, leg massage and full body massage. MISCONCEPTION: Massage is too painful. FACT: As we’ll discuss further in this guide, some techniques aren’t always purely enjoyable, but that’s usually because it takes more intense pressure or manipulation to get the desired relaxation in a muscle and not because your therapist is injuring you. Some discomfort is to be expected, but if a certain technique is ever too painful, by all means, let your therapist know, and he or she will adjust accordingly. MISCONCEPTION: Massage corrects problems in one session. FACT: While it’s likely you will feel great and experience notable pain and stress reduction after just one session, long-term issues require long-term care. Regular massage creates better, more effective results with each consecutive session.

Q. What type of massage technique or spa enjoyed by your customer? Body relaxing is one of the massage liked by our customers, sometimes we get paid more by them. Q. The Ace of Two.

Shakti Prashad Nayak, on how he brought both his passions together.

“No one can understand the needs of a sportsperson more than another sportsperson.” He smiles. “Comfort is what every sportsperson wants, requires.” He corrects himself. I wanted to do something about it” Through research, he discovered dyes and fabric weaving techniques which would make sportswear better and more comfortable. As his final year at college, he has finally come up with a set of sportswear. The fabrics are UV treated with natural dyes that he himself created. Most sportswear is made from synthetic fibers known for their elasticity. But the fact remains that they tend to stick to perspiring skin and are not very breathable. The answer came in the form of a cluster program initiated by NIFT, where he came across a tribal Odia community who dye their garments organically. ‘’I was so inspired, I decided to research more and experiment with weaves and natural dyes. Did you know lots of Indian herbs can be used as dyes and they protect, even benefit your skin in ways you cannot imagine!” Shakti added, his eyes bright, now that we were talking about his project. 68

national athlete, volleyball player, cricketer ..the list is endless. Reading through these no one would imagine it is right out of the CV of a fashion designer. Shakti Prasad Nayak, a fourth year at NIFT, Bhubaneswar is more into sports than the whole institute put together. On a conversation one evening, he spoke of the moment, several years ago when one of his friends had insisted he joined NIFT seeing his passion for art. Once there, he made sure he combined both his talents into one.

Photographed by Smruti Rekha Biswal

No one can understand the needs of a sportsperson more than another sportsperson.

“I discovered through research that tomatoes which are widely used as face masks are 98.5% antioxidants which protect the skin from UV rays. It was interesting to find that cotton, when dyed with tomato extracts, retains its ability to block UV rays. On treating various fabrics with the same extract I found that the most compatible fabric was cotton.” “ Polyester sportswear doesn’t protect the body in any way plus it’s not breathable. So I decided it has to be cotton. UV radiation causes sunburns, tanning, wrinkling and aging of the skin. It also causes skin cancer and sportspersons are continuously exposed to it. This problem needs an immediate solution.” He went on to describe how this finding could be used in multiple ways. “They can be used for Traffic Police who spend half their lives in the harsh summer sun” he added. The applicability of such an easy to use and budget-friendly solution is wide and ever increasing. The only problem being durability. Being a non-chemical dye, the effectiveness fades away sooner than it should. Shakti is positive he will find a solution to this. On asking what are his future plans for the project, he shares how he wants to open his own manufacturing unit of organically dyed sportswear. His recent project explores convertible sports cum semi-formal wear. “There is some much I need to do,” he said excitedly as always and ran back to the volley team waiting for him, leaving me to contemplate the importance of the word “need” in that little phrase. An enthusiastic ingenious in the making, with sustainability and reusability in mind is the best thing that could have happened to the world. Shakti went back to his game, little did the onlookers know the game he knows best would change the world for good soon. .Ananya Madhusmita

ORGANIC Vs CONVENTIONAL:

do you have the facts straight ?

Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance

,,

By Sunita Behera

Organic foods are believed to be safer than conventional ones, as it has natural ingredients, which makes it a reasonable choice, which makes it more expensive than conventional food. In a country like India where the population hardly gets enough food to satisfy their daily requirements, affording organic food items is a big question mark. Even the productivity of organic food cannot meet the need of this large population

72

NEOSTYL

Many believe that organic food is healthier than the conventional food. Is that always the case? Let’s explore some of the buried facts about it. Healthy food choices are now in the spotlight which has increased the intake of organic food. Natural Pesticides: Organic food consumers comparatively have a healthier lifestyle, for they are safe from the harmful effects of pesticides, while products of conventional food constitute the main source of pesticide. Whereas according to the critics, the organic foods are more contaminated by the bacteria and mould toxins to create natural pesticides. And the presence of these natural pesticides are present in high amount in organic foods which is just as dangerous as the synthetic pesticides or can be more harmful to the human body if consumed in a high amount. E-coli bacteria: The bacteria present in the soil due to the absence of pesticides can cause food-poisoning or worse. Raw manure can contain the harmful bacteria i.e. E-coli which comes from the intestine of the cattle. When this bacteria comes in contact with the soil and water it contaminates both which can cause kidney failure. Pathogens: Due to the restriction in the use of pesticides and insecticides, the pathogens can get into the plant itself, they can transfer into the inner tissues and the edible portion of the plants which can be harmful for the human body. Although these problems can be reduced if manure is properly composted or aged, then the risk of contamination is likely to be low. Also by heating the heaps of manure can reduce the amount of pathogen in the food. So, never judge a book by its cover; things are not always as they appear. Organic food is grown in the high humus contained soil which restricts the consumer from chemical intake, resulting in protection from the disease caused from fertilizers but in the other hand it can also affect the human health if the manure used for it is not treated properly before use.

In one of her blogs she said said that “I’ve been told that I’m a huge control freak and that’s a huge flaw but I don’t think it is. I’m unapologetically myself and if I’m a control freak I’m OK with that. Me being in control of certain things has really helped my career get to where it is. I don’t think I should be made to feel guilty about that.” Today, she is a successful vj, comedian and motivational speaker.
