National Hospital Week 2016

Dear Friends, I would like to take a moment to wish a happy National Hospital Week (May 8-14) to the physicians, employees and volunteers of Peninsula Regional Medical Center and the Peninsula Regional Health System.

Caring for our patients in the most appropriate setting, Coaching them to achieve their own personal healthcare goals and Connecting them to the best services and providers available on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Hospital Week is our way of recognizing and thanking you, the 3,300 professionals on our team, for your outstanding effort and your constant contributions to the people of the communities you call home. For this year’s national celebration, we are honoring 416 employees representing 5,640 years of combined service who have reached their, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 60 year anniversaries in 2016 at Peninsula Regional. By the way, that 60 year anniversary belongs to the amazing Ms. Recie Marshall, who just recently retired from our team. To put her incredible career into perspective, PRMC has been a hospital for 118 years and Ms. Recie has been a part of our family for more than half the years we’ve been in existence. That’s pretty special! You may never see that happen here at PRMC again!

Our theme for 2016’s National Hospital Week is our new Service Motto you can find on your PRMC Care Card, “We Bring Our Hearts to Work and Show We Care.” It certainly describes who we are here at PRMC and our commitment to our patients and their families.

Recie and our entire team represent our commitment to A Culture of Always, and the valued experience that others on the Delmarva Peninsula strive to achieve; each with remarkable healthcare knowledge and compassion and a dedication to quality and reliability in the way they approach their careers. We lead by example by

It takes the best kind of person to work in healthcare, and we have always believed we have recruited and retained the best here at Peninsula Regional. Thanks to you, we are able to provide that continuous, exceptional service that our patients not only expect but also deserve. Your passion for excellence and desire to do the right thing make you our everyday heroes. God bless each and every one of you! Congratulations to each of you for what you do, not only during National Hospital Week but 365 days a year.

Service Award Honorees

60-Year Honoree Recie Marshall, the longest tenured employee in PRMC history, began working at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in 1955 as a Central Processing aide on the night shift when everything (yes, everything) was cleaned by hand and reprocessed. Even water and saline bottles were filled and sterilized in CSR and Recie recalls that they “made” the xeroform gauze. Early in her career “Miss Recie,” as she is affectionately called by her co-workers, transferred to the OR on the evening shift where she multitasked, from processing instruments to cleaning and turning over rooms and transporting patients. She was promoted to PUA in 1999. Since 2001, Recie has worked on ordering and cleaning anesthesia equipment. Her quiet presence is one that could be taken for granted until the morning after Recie is off. That is when everyone recognizes just how much she contributes to the department. Recie has received Employee of the Quarter recognition noting her work ethic and pleasant manner which exemplify service excellence. If this were not enough, Recie is an ordained minister and she spent many years as a volunteer here as well as at Deer’s Head Hospital Center. As it is with everything, all great things do reach a conclusion, and Ms. Recie retired in January of this year after 60 amazing years at PRMC. She lives near Stockton. Her husband Powell passed in February 2015. They have three children. Her son Bruce is a graduate of Salisbury University and lives also in Stockton. Her daughter Cynthia is a registered nurse living in Delaware. Her daughter Crystal went home to be with the Lord in 2003. She is missed. A scholarship was created in her daughter’s memory: the Crystal Marshall Memorial Scholarship for Healthcare Professions in Worcester County. Recie has six grandchildren. You can often find Recie at Dayton’s Restaurant here in Salisbury, and she loves to travel to Lancaster, PA.

45-Year Honorees John Morcom joined the Medical Center (then Peninsula General) on March 8, 1971 as an “OJT,” an onthe-job trainee in Respiratory Care, and planned to work here just long enough to pay his way through college. Rumor has it that his mother and his aunt, a RN who founded the Respiratory Department, bet that John would not last more than two weeks. 45 years later, but luckily for PRMC, he stuck with it! John became a Certified Technician in 1982, and a Registered Therapist in 1984 as a graduate from California College of Respiratory Care. He became licensed in 1992 when it became the state standard. He was promoted to Senior Therapist in the Respiratory Department in 1995. In November of 2003, John transferred to Information Services, where he helped develop and support the IT applications used in the ED for documentation including order entry and patient tracking. John returned to the Respiratory Department in 2009 as the Director of Respiratory Services, a position that he holds today. Our high standard of respiratory care can be attributed to John’s passion for PRMC and his patients. Known as an effective and strong leader, John humbly speaks of the things he is most proud of in his career. John will tell you that includes his time at the bedside when he was an early participant of placing a-lines, intubation, standbys for L&D and C-sections, and starting the Respiratory Assessment Program. He was one of the first Respiratory Therapists in the state of Maryland to be an ACLS instructor, and was licensed during the first year possible in the state of Maryland. John has been a tutor and mentor to students as well as an instructor for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and was a clinical instructor for Salisbury University for eight years. John was also named the Medical Center’s Employee of the Year in 1985. At PRMC John helps to set the standards for high quality patient care. John is known by his peers as a dedicated, professional, detail oriented and persistent leader, and proud PRMC employee. John is a founding member of the “Evolution of Healthcare” Friday meeting. In his free time, John is an avid golfer and devoted to his wife Darlene, daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren.

Kathy Niblett or “Nibs” began her career as a Nursing Assistant Scrub Tech in the OR in 1970 while still in high school, and at the same time she was pursuing an LPN degree. After Kathy graduated in 1971, she started working as a Respiratory Technician and was placed in the Recovery Room (now PACU) in 1974. Kathy then moved to the Anesthesia Department as an Anesthesia Technician. Several years later, she transferred to Same Day Surgery, then back to Anesthesia for a few years until she finally came home to Same Day Surgery (SDS) where she remains today. Kathy’s co-workers describe her as dedicated and outstanding. Kathy frequently gets Values In Action cards for her caring and soothing manner with SDS patients and of course for her fantastic IV skills. Kathy often is pulled to other departments to help with IV access, and is the “go to” queen to orient new staff at PRMC to starting IVs. Kathy is very fond of her water globes and her trips to New York, as long as she can have the front seat on the bus. Green is not her shade, if you catch our traveling drift! She has been married for 44 years to her husband Kenny, has one son “little Kenny,” but the pride and joy of her life is her granddaughter, Kiley, who is her “mini-me.” Kathy is also grandmother and great-grandmother to the other loves in her life, Bubba and Bebe, her granddaughter’s pot belly pigs. You should ask her to imitate them. She is the SDS social coordinator and does an excellent job planning events. Kathy is an avid Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson fan and will spend a “considerable amount of time” on his Facebook page regularly. She also loves her O’s, but not like she does Russell and her Seahawks. Lastly, Kathy is the chocolate resource for SDS and Dr. Huber. She keeps a plentiful supply of chocolate handy to make sure that Dr. Huber has a great day while in SDS. Talk about Service Excellence. Kathy is an excellent resource for staff, patients and visitors. She has a wonderful, compassionate demeanor and puts patients and families at ease while in SDS. She is a tremendous asset to SDS who wouldn’t know what to do without her.

40-Year Honorees Rachel Bozman began her career of 40 years with “on the job” training at PRMC in July of 1975 in the Respiratory Department. She received her LPN upon graduation from high school and vocational school, and eventually became a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), working in that position for approximately 20 years. Rachel then joined Peninsula Pulmonary in the early 1990s, and has been putting her LPN and CRT skills to great use ever since. Described by her friends and colleagues as a caring person, Rachel can fulfill almost any role within her department, and continues to train the Pulmonary Care clinical office staff. She goes above and beyond to meet the needs of physicians, patients and her co-workers. She continues to be a strong member of the organization, willingly takes on challenges and always strives for excellence in everything she does. Rachel enjoys reading and relaxing at home on the weekends. She is a caring mother, aunt and sister, and loves the time she spends with Korona, her Chihuahua. Her goal is to hopefully one day retire while she’s still young and enjoy a leisurely lifestyle.

Jackie Brumbley worked in the Finance Division of Peninsula Regional Medical Center her entire 40-year career, until recently transitioning to the EPIC Team to help with the EMR build. However, she got her first taste of healthcare a few years earlier in 1971 as a front desk clerk for the family medicine practice of Drs. Ragosta, Colligan and Colwell. In those early days, Jackie remembers being a one-woman show in Outpatient Registration with a typewriter and a manual card maker. How times have changed. Jackie was a team member for four different computer conversions, including a system conversion to STAR. Being a part of each helped establish her “Go Ask Jackie, She’ll Know” reputation for a number of departments who rely on her expertise. Her friends like to say that Jackie improves the health of the community, one keystroke at a time, and that she is notorious for following process flow, start to finish, to guarantee that projects are completed correctly and on time. Known for her honesty and her compassion for everyone she encounters, Jackie is respected by everyone, and admired for her amazing cooking skills — we’re told her caramel corn could put Fisher’s out of business. Jackie has been married for 28 years and has one son. She is active in her church, Emmanuel Wesleyan.

Bonnie Dean began her 40-year career at PRMC in 1975 as a Float Nurse. Her travels over four decades have taken her to places like the Mother/Baby Nursery, where she gained great experience and absolutely loved working with the little ones. She also spent a couple of years on 2 East, then found a home in Behavioral Health, where she helped to launch the service 22 years ago. As Charge Nurse there, Bonnie has mentored a number of nurses who have learned the professional well under her leadership, guidance and direction. Her passion is unmatched for patients with mental illness, especially our most vulnerable of patients. Bonnie is loved by her patients and co-workers, and has received quite a few letters of appreciation from patients and patient’s families. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time listening to music, playing guitar, watching college basketball and gardening.

Gail Disharoon-Gray began her 40-year journey at PRMC in the Operating Room as a Scrub Nurse, and over the years became one of those very special and outstanding OR nurses that our surgical teams could rely on to scrub in on all specialties. Gail served the General Vascular Team as the Clinical Resource Technician for Vascular Services, is a Certified Surgical Assistant, and assisted a number of surgeon during cases. She was also part of the very first Surgical Assist Class here at PRMC. Recently, Gail turned in her surgical scrubs to tackle a new career with new challenges as part of our Peninsula Regional Medical Group, where she is sharing her nursing expertise and knowledge with our patients in the community. Gail’s pride and joy is her daughter, Madison, who has been awarded early admission into the graduate program at the University of Maryland College Park. PRMG is proud to welcome Gail to their team and to a new career path.

Debbie Grant began her incredible career at PRMC 40 years ago. She has worked in many areas of the Medical Center including 4 West, ED, Pediatrics, Nursery, TCU, Critical Care and Float before joining the Endoscopy team in 1997. Debbie is an integral part of Endoscopy, and responsible for overall endoscope processing, maintenance and troubleshooting. Debbie has been to several outside training sessions to become proficient in endoscope reprocessing, and has become our resident Endoscopy expert and trainer for these scopes. She also performs inventory management for the many supplies needed in the department. Debbie goes the extra mile to cover the needs of the Pulmonary and Endoscopy services in the department. She is a team player and a source of encouragement for all staff members, including our physicians. She provides excellent customer service and is a dedicated member of Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Debbie was selected as “Employee of the Year” in 2014 and she thoroughly enjoyed her parking space as well as the other tokens of appreciation! In her spare time, Debbie is an active member and Elder of New Psalmist Church, where she serves as Choir Director and Bible Study Teacher. She treasures time spent with her three daughters and two grandchildren.

Velma Handy began her career at PRMC in Information Services and has worked in the department ever since. And after four decades, when we tell you that Velma has seen it all, she really has seen it all. Her knowledge and experience are a huge part of the foundation of the department. Her career dates back to the era of “BDE” Batch Data Entry, “Dumb” Terminals and Disk Packs. If there’s a living history of IS, it’s Velma. Her peers note that Velma is extremely dependable and always maintains a level of calm and quiet confidence at the Service Desk, which sometimes can be anything but calm and quiet. A pretty amazing accomplishment is that while working the night shift full time, she successfully earned her degree in social work. Velma is devoted to her children and grandson, and is a great asset to not only Information Services but also to everyone who relies on her expertise here at PRMC.

She has an outstanding work ethic, and her passion to treat patients, customers, and visitors as if they are her family is truly impressive. Diane’s high standards are on display each and every day. In May 2015, Diane and her husband, Paul became proud grandparents and welcomed their first grandson, Skyler Daniel to the family. Diane helps her son, Daniel and daughter-inlaw, Heartli by bringing Skyler to daycare on Tuesdays and Thursdays before reporting to work. In addition, Diane plays a key role in handling the business aspects of the family farm. She is one very busy grandma. Congratulations Diane on 40 years of service! The Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department is very fortunate to have you as part of their team.

Brenda LeCompte began her career on the Mother/Baby unit in 1975 and has been there ever since! Friends will tell you it was an easy decision for Brenda to start and stay on Mother/Baby because she absolutely loves what she does and it shows in the quality of her work. Known as a “hugger,” Brenda is said to give the best, and has probably hugged over a million of our moms, dads, babies and her peers. Her smile is equally as contagious. Her nursing skills are impeccable with a strong knowledge base and a caring compassion. She’s helped move the unit twice, and played a significant role in the organizational care model changes to our Couplet Care service now offered on Mother/Baby. A great nightshift resource for everyone, not only on the unit but across the house, Brenda is an outstanding mentor to new staff. She is well respected by physicians and peers alike, and has been complemented numerous times for being a “strong and leading” presence on the unit. Best of all, her patients love her family-centered approach to taking care of their most precious of possessions, and it shows with her Daisy Award and Employee of the Quarter nominations. If you know Brenda, you know that a perfect hairstyle and matching attire is a MUST. Kathy Pollitt began her career at PRMC in June of 1975 after graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland. At that time she was one of only a few nurses at PRMC to hold a degree. Kathy started in Critical Care as the Assistant Head Nurse and worked alongside the management team to implement the Open Heart Program at PRMC. In 1983, she transitioned to the OR and worked with the very same program she helped to implement. There were no specialty teams at the time. She later worked in the OR Orthopaedic specialty, which then typically had only one or two total joint cases per week. Kathy found that her passion for OR nursing was in the field of Urology. She has devoted 28 years of service in Urology and is still there today. She was the first to be given the prestigious role of Clinical Resource Nurse in the OR. Many times, physicians and staff look to Kathy for her expertise and guidance. For three years Peggy worked night shift before switching to days on the Information Desk. In 1982, she changed her status back to parttime, returned to the switchboard, and for the next four years worked every shift in the department before returning to full time, permanently, on nights in 1993. When duty calls from the ER or other areas, Peggy is known for finding anyone, anywhere, at any time when a family needs to be notified. Peggy is the main night shift trainer, and it has been said that when Peggy trains you, “you have been trained.”Peggy’s peers describe her as flexible, honest, and a team player with an incredible memory. She is very caring and will help anyone. In her personal life, Peggy loves the beach, lighthouses, and adores her two grandchildren. She hopes to visit Cape Hatteras more often. Peggy is also looking forward to spending more time with her family and friends. Chris in the Nursing Supervisor’s Office shared this about Peggy: “The thought of Peggy retiring makes my heart heavy. She has been my right-hand woman for many years. I know that her infinite wisdom and knowledge base will help direct us to the right answer in most any situation, and she is an extra layer of protection for this institution while on her watch. If there was a way that we could clone or bottle Peggy for the remainder of my career, what a gift it would be for PRMC!”

Connie Webster has been a part of the PRMC family for 35 years, and each and every one of those years has been spent with the Surgical Services team. Her first 13 years were spent as the OR Secretary at the charge desk, then a transfer to OR Scheduling where she is currently working as a Surgical Scheduler. Connie remembers back to the days when we were posting surgical cases exclusively on paper, and when patient charges were calculated manually. Even though those services have transitioned to computerization, one that has hasn’t changed a single bit is Connie’s quiet nature and her dedication to the OR team and our patients. In her time away from PRMC, Connie loves to travel and spend time with her family.

30-Year Honorees Maria Bailey, “Bailey” to friends and co-workers, is the Lead Phlebotomist for Inpatient Laboratory. She started her Phlebotomy career in 1985, right here at PRMC. Maria has become one of the best phlebotomists on staff, often taking new hires under her wing to teach them techniques that can enhance their skills. In 2008 Maria was promoted to the Lead Phlebotomist position she holds to this day. Her years of service earned her a spot on the Laboratory Lean Team in April of 2009 and a seat on the Service Excellence Committee. The last two years, Maria has represented PRMC in our population health effort by offering her services to Salisbury University’s Health Clinic. When Maria is not serving our patients or SU students, she is serving others, offering fellowship to our patients at the Genesis Extended Care and Rehabilitation Center. She is an active member of the First Baptist Church of Salisbury. Her favorite devotion is Psalms 27 Verses 1, 13 and 14. She feels this is the foundation for her life and has shaped her into the person she is today. Bailey is a devoted wife and mother who loves to spend time with her family. She enjoys taking vacations, shopping and exercising. When you see her in the hall say hi, she’s the one always smiling.

Colleen Brewington is currently an Application Analyst for the EPIC Team, transitioning there to help with the EMR build in August of last year. Her career at PRMC began in 1985 as a Legal Insurance Correspondence Clerk in Medical Records. Collen has spent time in Facilities as their Administrative Assistant, and also 17 years as the Office Supervisor of our PRMG Family Medicine office in Snow Hill. She was most recently in IS as a EMR Support Specialist II. You may not know that Colleen was a member of the Maryland Army National Guard from 1983-1990 as a Military Police Officer, and hold an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. She is a previous Employee of the Quarter and served as the Secretary of the Employee Activities Committee for four years. Known as someone who will always go the extra mile to get the job done, Colleen is on the Board of Directors for Women Supporting Women, serving as its Secretary for the past four years, and is the Church Treasurer at Spence Baptist Church, where she is very active. She’s been married to husband, Roy, for 30 years and loves spending time with her family, in particular the grandkids. Photography and scrapbooking are two of Colleen’s favorite hobbies.

Karen Burns began her 30-year career at PRMC as a Staff Nurse on 5 West in March of 1986. Karen would remain there for 20 years, and also served as the unit’s Administrative Charge Nurse. While there, she was instrumental in a number of new project launches including the implementation of radiology procedures and a chart prep process (PAT) for radiology. Karen then transitioned to a Charge Nurse role in what is now the ORU. In 2008, Same Day Surgery and PAT came under her leadership, and most recently the PACU and the Anesthesia Department have begun reporting up to Karen. A proud accomplishment for Karen, recently, has been the completion of graduate school and her Master’s degree in Health Care Administration. Karen and her husband, Rick, live on a small farm. They’re the proud parents of three children: twins Taylor and Tyler who are 25 and their “baby,” Morgan, who is now 22. Morgan and Tyler, by the way, have followed in their mom’s footsteps and are members of the PRMC healthcare team. When away, Karen enjoys spending time with the family and camping. Of all the bucket list items we’ve ever heard, hers might be the coolest…she’d love to portray a zombie on the television show The Walking Dead.

Mary Ann Card joined the hospital as our very first part-time pharmacist in 1985 before working her way up to the full-time ranks. Throughout these 30 years, Mary has distinguished herself by being exceptionally thorough in her attention to detail. Mary prides herself on being a true patient advocate, and always looking for ways to improve the patient’s medication profile. This is evidenced by Mary being a two-time Employee of the Quarter honoree. Advances in hospital technology over the years have allowed Mary to become much more involved in the care of the patient. In addition to being an excellent pharmacist, Mary is a loyal friend, fabulous cook and well known for her beautiful cakes. On many occasions, the Pharmacy staff has reaped the benefits of working with Mary when she brings in her homemade treats! Mary has a deep love of books, music and poetry. She is devoted to her husband, 3 children and most especially her 2 grandchildren.

Trudy Chaffinch began her employment here at PRMC three decades ago as a Chemistry Tech making the princely sum of $3.35 per hour, then switched over to Hematology until the labs were merged into the Core Lab. Trudy says when she finally reached $5.00 an hour, she “thought she was really something!” Eleven years ago, Trudy switched to the overnight shift and remains a core member of that team. A recent Values in Action recipient, Trudy is praised by her Lab peers as someone who is always willing to pitch in, a consummate team player and eager to learn new skills. We’re told the overnight crew also appreciates her quick wit and comic timing. Described as the “Mother Hen” of the overnight team in the lab, Trudy is devoted to her co-workers. Outside of her work family, Trudy is married, has a daughter and two sons, one of whom is a nurse in the ICU. She loves the role of mother and grandmother. Away from PRMC, you might find Trudy playing piano at her church, where she also teaches Sunday School and Summer Bible Camp. She’s also a big fan of the movies.

Susan Cottongim graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1984 with her BS in Dietetics. She completed her Dietetic Internship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit in September of 1985. Susan began her 30-year career at Peninsula Regional Medical Center when she was hired as a Clinical Dietitian for Food and Nutrition Services in December of that same year. While working with a variety of patients she developed an interest in diabetes, which led her to pursue becoming a Certified Diabetes Educator. Susan achieved the CDE credential in 1992 and was hired as the Dietitian for the Diabetes Education Program when it launched in 1993. She worked part time in Food and Nutrition and the Diabetes Education Program for several years until transitioning exclusively to the Diabetes Education Program in 1998. Susan, who peers will tell you is as loyal, honest and professional as they come, became the Coordinator of the Diabetes Education Program in 2010, and works with her staff to provide diabetes education classes, inpatient diabetes education and outpatient medical nutrition therapy services. Known as a pleasure to work with and a team player in both the Diabetes Program and also in many of the PRMC activities that take place on and off the campus, Susan was honored as Employee of the Quarter in 1993 and again 2007, and was an Employee of the Year finalist 9 years ago. Susan has been married to her husband Jeff for 26 years. They have two daughters: Joy, a sophomore at Appalachian State University, and Amy, who is a junior at Salisbury Christian School.

Lori Draper began her career at PRMC in 1985 on the Float Team after graduating as an LPN from WorWic in 1984. She continued her education there and obtained her RN associate’s degree in 1990 while working as a Float Nurse and also in Same Day Surgery. Lori transferred to Endoscopy in 1990 and has remained with the Endoscopy team ever since. Lori worked in many areas in PRMC while on the Float Team: ICU, the old CCU, Newborn Nursery, ED and Med-Surg gaining experience as a “jack of all trades” until she found her home in Endoscopy. Some of her more memorable experiences involve taking care of heart patients in CCU, tube feeding babies in the nursery, and a summer spent in the Emergency Department. She is the PillCam coordinator for the Endoscopy unit, co-committee member for unit scheduling, and a Charge Nurse. Lori has supported the unit’s performance improvement activities and has most recently been working with the Pulmonary Improvement Core Team within Endoscopy. Lori enjoys gardening, raising chickens, and is a great bargain hunter. She has 4 children and 5 grandchildren and loves being a grandmother!

Bertie Ewell launched her career at PRMC on July 23, 1985 as a Unit Secretary on 3 West. She remained there for just a little under three years before joining the Same Day Surgery team, where she put down roots for the next 27 years. In February of last year, Bertie joined the Peninsula Regional Medical Group and began work as a Patient Services Representative in our Pain Management office in Salisbury. As the first person you meet at the practice, it’s great that Bertie always has a smile on her face, and patients tell us they absolutely love talking with her as they arrive for or leave following their appointments. Bertie, a born and raised Snow Hill girl, enjoys going to the movies and spending time with her family and friends. She is also very involved with her church.

Tim Feist graduated high school in Pennsylvania and took off for a summer of hiking in Alaska with no plans to return. Things didn’t go as planned, and he found himself back home working in his uncle’s auto parts business with no intention of going to college. That was until his grandmother, Director of Social Services for the county he grew up in, encouraged him to shadow a couple of her supervisors. One was responsible for Mental Health and Psychiatric interventions, and he was amazed at the complexity of problems she encountered and how she was able to network services and programs together to help create a path toward stability for troubled individuals and families. He found the problem resolution used in social work to be interesting and impactful on others. A bachelor’s degree from Penn State followed, then a Master’s from Pitt in Social Work and his MBA from Wilmington College. He joined PRMC 30 years ago, and in 1998 he was promoted to Vice President, responsible for departments including Performance Improvement, Risk Management, Health Information Management, Medical Imaging and Patient Care Management Services. In 2013, Tim’s role expanded to include responsibility for Compliance, upon which he became a Certified Compliance Officer. The young man who hiked, rock climbed, participated in fullcontact karate and white water rafting through Alaska and beyond, now enjoys the more relaxed pace that comes with golfing, fly fishing and kayaking when his schedule permits. We’re not sure when he finds the time, because he’s also involved in community service and has had stints as a Scout Master, President of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and President of the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore ─ all while raising two children, Devin and Jocelyn, with his wife Cindy, and being the consummate son during his mother’s illness and now the organizer of his father’s care. Tim is a trusted and capable member of the Executive Team, who are honored to work side by side with him. Thank you, Tim for settling down in Salisbury and making a difference every day for our organization and community for the last 30 years.

Shellie Gronsbell is being honored for her 30 years of service at PRMC, even though she started her career in 1978 at the Peninsula General Hospital in Pediatrics. She worked here for 12 months before moving to California for 3 years, then returning back to the old PGH in 1985 on the then “detox unit.” Shellie moved to 2 East in 1993 to the post Cardiac Cath Unit, and in 1998 to our Berlin Family Medicine practice. She moved with the office in 2015 and now works with Dr. Gunn at the beautiful Delmarva Health Pavilion in the Ocean Pines Family Medicine office. Peers have named Shellie the “IV Queen” for getting them right every time. She always makes sure to treat her patients like they are family. Shellie enjoys cooking, bike riding and horticulture during her spare time. She is very involved in her community, and is a Lady Elk with the Elks Lodge. Shellie runs a bread ministry through Panera Bread and the Food Bank of Berlin. She has been married for 24 years and has two beautiful daughters.

Trudy Hammond began her career at Peninsula General Hospital as a temporary employee in the Facilities Management Department in February 1986 and was hired as a permanent employee one month later. She credits Bruce Patterson, former Director of Facilities Management, with teaching her the ropes of the healthcare industry and introducing her to computers. As the only woman in a department of men, she formed lifelong friendships with her maintenance co-workers. In 1988, Trudy transferred to the Executive Office as an Executive Secretary. During her 18 years in the Executive Office Trudy served under four different presidents: John Stevens, Virginia Layfield, Dan Akin, and Alan Newberry. Customer service has always been a part of Trudy’s professional life, including serving clients in the insurance industry, triaging work order requests and emergency response to facility events in the Facilities Management Department, patient complaint management in the Executive Office, filling the role of Patient Relations Specialist as needed in the Performance Improvement Department and managing the patient experience survey process. Throughout her career, Trudy has sought higher education, obtaining an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree in organizational leadership, and this past year a doctor of education degree. She is currently pursuing certification as a project manager. Trudy is recognized for her willingness to volunteer and accept new assignments and challenges. She is a genuinely positive person, with an ever present smile and kind word toward all. Trudy resides in Delmar, Maryland with her son, M.J., a college student and part-time employee in the Food Service Department. In her free time she is very active in her church serving as President of the Administrative Board, member of the church Advisory Board, choir member, Kitchen Committee member and is a Deaconess. She enjoys reading, especially when it’s not a textbook, cooking, gardening and crafts. She also has a newfound appreciation for sports cars, and hangs out with The Eastern Shore Corvette Club.

Joseph Johnson began his 30-year career at PRMC when he joined Environmental Services in 1986. He ran the MDU for 11 years before entering into a 5-year apprenticeship in Plant Operations, where he progressed from a Grade 5 Stationary Engineer to a Grade 1 Stationary Engineer licensed by the state of Maryland. Joe is our primary day shift operator and also performs our water analysis, conscientiously ensuring the water quality within the Plant’s heating and cooling water systems. Joe is an avid Ravens and Capitals fan. When he is not following his favorite sports teams, Joe enjoys reading about history and working in his garden.

Bob Klingler started as a Groundskeeper 30 years ago in 1986. He took great pride in maintaining the grounds of the facility and was instrumental in the development of the snow removal plan. Bob then transitioned to a Purchasing Assistant for Food and Nutrition, but later returned to the grounds team where he was awarded Employee of the Year 1992-1993. In 2000, Bob advanced to the Operations Analyst position where he has been involved in purchasing energy, applying for grants, expanding the camera system and several other projects. As well as monitoring all of the financial and regulatory compliance of all areas of departmental operations, he modernized and upgraded many of our operations. Bob has been an integral part of the development of PRMC’s security camera system by growing it from just a few cameras initially to well over 300 cameras today. Bob is a longtime member of the EAC. He has chaired the Music Committee, providing the sounds for the Christmas Dance, our Backyard BBQ, and other events. He has shared his love of dance by teaching new steps to several employees. While many were aware of his and wife Chris’s dancing prowess, few of us knew of Bob’s tremendous computer and photography skills. He was active with Wi-Hi Band Boosters from1991-1995 and also a charter member of USA Dances Salisbury, where he served a term as President. Bob loves to travel, watch SU Lacrosse and will be glad to share the pictures he’s taken. He is a loving and supportive father, grandfather and spouse.

Pat Lankford began her career at PRMC on January 6, 1986 on C2 after being a stay-at-home mother for 10 years. From 1986-2008, Pat shared her expertise with a number of areas including C2, 4 East, 3 West and 4 West. What’s interesting is that those were the “same” unit, just moving with Pat over the course of time to different locations in the Medical Center. During her 22 years of medical nursing she also worked for a short time in Endoscopy before joining the Diabetes Education Program in 2008. Three years into her diabetes nursing career, Pat became a Certified Diabetes Educator, and that same year also earned her certification in Surgical Nursing. Currently, Pat is one of four Certified Diabetes Educators working with patients in our Diabetes Education Program. Thanks to her years of medical nursing knowledge, she makes it easy for patients to better understand how to care for their diabetes and how to improve their self-management skills. Ask friends and they’ll tell you that Pat is very organized, able to focus on specific needs and narrow down tasks to complete the work. She supports her fellow employees and gives encouragement to everyone. Pat loves her family and spends a great deal of time with them, especially the grandkids. Road trips are her specialty, and with a big GMC Yukon, she can fit all of the grandchildren inside. What most defines Pat, though, is her caring heart. She’s active in her church (St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Delmar) and has donated numerous hours of SPT to fellow employees who need time for an extended illness or special circumstances.

Christie Mills started working in the Lab in 1985 and has worked as a Laboratory Information Coordinator her entire career. She worked the day shift for about a year and then transferred to overnights for five years. She came to day shift as the lead Laboratory Information Coordinator and was in that position for 12 years. Wanting to try something different, she moved to evening shift full time in 2008 and has worked there ever since. When Christie started working in the Lab, the inpatient areas sent all of their orders to the Laboratory Information Coordinator who then placed all of those orders into our Sunquest Laboratory System, and yes, this is the same lab computer system we still use 30 years later! Christie is very dependable and works very hard to make sure that the correct testing is ordered and no orders are missed. She has a fantastic memory and is often a go to person when a question comes up about something that happened in the past. Christie lives in Delmar and often drives her elderly parents from Dorchester County to their appointments in Salisbury before coming in to work for her shift. Christie is an animal lover and has had a number of pets over the years.

Caroline Monroe began her career in the Automated Chemistry Lab at the “old” Peninsula General Hospital in 1985 after graduating with her bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from then Salisbury State College. She worked there until that section was combined with Hematology to form the current Core Lab in January 2010. Caroline transferred to her current position in Special Chemistry in late summer 2014, and absolutely loves it. She began working in the Lab long before universal precautions were implemented. This dates back to when techs never wore gloves, and “sticky serum” could be found on the bench tops. Caroline is a kind and gentle soul who never speaks a bad word about anyone. She is a great friend to many and extremely dependable. She loves the outdoors, cycling, kayaking, camping and hiking, and the beach is her “happy place,” where there’s nothing better than a day with your toes in the sand. Caroline is also an avid reader, and the proud mother of four adult children, two boys and two girls, all extremely successful. Both of her daughters are teachers; Lauren was the Wicomico County Teacher of the Year last year and Shannon is following in her dad’s footsteps as a P.E. teacher at Wi-Hi. Her son Vance received his BS and master’s degrees from College Park and is a farmer, and other son James is a proud infantry soldier in the United States Army.

Pat Oberholtzer was hired October 30, 1985 and started her career at PRMC as a Chemistry Medical Technologist. After a few years, she transferred to Special Chemistry for six years, then returned to Chemistry for 1 year. For the last 19 years she has been Evening Supervisor of the Laboratory. Pat ensures staffing is adequate and deals with any and all Laboratory problems each and every day. In recent years she has assumed a great deal of responsibility for KPI measures and auditing Lab requisitions. This has helped ensure that patients get the testing they need. Pat is always willing to volunteer and has been part of the Lab’s United Way Team for many years. She has also led the Lab Week efforts for many years to ensure its success. The Lab often receives comments from vendors that “we do a great job making Lab Week fun for the staff,” and that is largely due to Pat’s efforts. She also served as Chair of the EAC Holiday Committee for five years and led the Employee Activities Committee for one year. Pat is very family oriented – she has 3 children and 6 grandchildren. She enjoys spending as much time with them as possible, even though the grandchildren all live in Florida. Pat is an active member of Bethesda United Methodist Church and The Community Players of Salisbury. She and her husband David love to travel. This passion has taken them to 27 countries so far. This past February, their cruise to the Antarctic helped them check off one item on their bucket list – to travel to all seven continents.

Anne Pleasanton joined the Medical Center team 30 years ago on September 15, 1985. She worked for Inpatient Phlebotomy while completing her clinical rotation for the MLT program. She transferred to the Outpatient Lab in 1986 and stayed there until moving to our Woodbrooke Lab in 2010.Anne saw the changes from manually calculating the screening spirometry to the computer measured spirometry. The Lab drew ABGs for many of those years before Respiratory started doing all of them. As well as being an excellent Phlebotomist, Anne is extremely patient and treats everyone with dignity and respect. As Senior Tech at Woodbrooke, she takes ownership and responsibility for all happenings at her draw center. She is an invaluable resource to her team and is quick to respond to all questions – even on her days off. She was also the first Outreach Tech to successfully pass the Cardiovascular International EKG Certification. Anne has volunteered as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America for many years, and at her local church. Her greatest joy has been her personal walk of faith and raising two children and watching them grow into productive members of society. She looks forward to retirement and traveling with her husband.

Eileen Polk started as a Medical Records Clerk. When the hospital launched its electronic medical record Eileen grew with it, first as a Quality Review Specialist and then a Coder. She always wanted to code and Eileen says that outpatient surgeries are her favorite types of accounts to code. Eileen is thinking about going back to school to get her RHIA degree. She is known for her willingness to help others learn. Eileen loves spending time with her 4-year-old granddaughter, traveling to tropical places where she can get an umbrella drink, (or two), and shopping. Always on the “to collect” list are handbags and shoes.

Renee Robinson is a native of Salisbury, Maryland. She began her career at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on October 14, 1985. She has seen many changes throughout the years in the Food & Nutrition department and across PRMC. Renee started on the tray line and is still on the patient side, but now as a Catering Associate. Renee enjoys her job because she knows she makes a difference with her patients, and when staff concerns become a challenge, the Food & Nutrition team knows that they can rely on Renee to jump in and help out. Renee has a loving husband and two children. Her daughter Arelia graduates from high school later this month and has been accepted at Penn State, where she will major in Business Administration. Renee’s proudest moment with her daughter was when she was invited to the White House by the President and First Lady for her Academic achievement. Renee’s son, Joseph, is employed at PRMC in Central Processing. Throughout his years of high school, he was one of the region’s top wrestlers and finished runner up in his weight class in a wrestling tournament in Omaha, Nebraska. Renee hopes to retire soon so that she and her husband can travel the world.

Jeanne Ruff has had a pretty remarkable three decades at PRMC. Beginning in 1986, she was hired as our very first Clinical Exercise Physiologist, and implemented the Medical Center’s now highly successful and nationally recognized Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Adult Fitness Program. Under Jeanne’s leadership it grew into and remains the largest and most comprehensive in the Middle Atlantic region. She also launched the first joint venue program between Peninsula Regional and Atlantic General with the Maintenance and Adult Fitness Program in Worcester County, now located at our beautiful Delmarva Health Pavilion Ocean Pines. Since 2008, Jeanne has served as the Executive Director of our Guerrieri Heart & Vascular Institute, and has been a key player in bringing new and revolutionary services, like TAVR, to PRMC and our customers. Working with her team, Jeanne has been and remains instrumental in the design and coordination of our annual Coastal Cardiac and Vascular Conference, the Women’s Heart Program, our Tel-Assurance Program for patients with heart failure, and our Love Your Heart Luncheon fundraiser with the Foundation, to name only a few. Jeanne holds a Master’s of Science in Exercise Physiology/Cardiac Rehabilitation from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. She has received numerous certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine, and has been invited to Singapore to present an Exercise Specialist Workshop and Certification Course for the ACSM. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from both the Maryland and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and is a founding member of the Maryland Chapter. Jeanne has also served as the Past Secretary/Treasurer/ President and Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Still a runner after all of these years, Jeanne also enjoys biking, teaching fitness classes and has recently taken up golf. She loves to travel and visit family in Wisconsin and Oregon. Not a bad career, so far, for “that Ruff girl from Bloomer, Wisconsin.”

Glenda Shrieves actually began her career with PRMC in 1970, and while working here, attended Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) School, graduating in May of 1971. Glenda moved out a state a couple of times, which took her away from us, but fortunately she returned for good in 1985 and re-launched her now threedecade-old relationship with our hospital in the Blood Bank Donor area. A very familiar and friendly face to our customers at the Milford Street Lab, Glenda worked for a while at the hospital’s Outpatient Lab and then at the Riverside Lab before settling in at Milford. An Employee of the Quarter honoree in 2000, Glenda is described by those who know her best as very dependable, an outstanding team player, and an invaluable resource for new hires joining our Lab team. Glenda is an avid animal lover, taking care of the stray cats that “adopt her” and the ducks that choose to winter on the Delmarva near her home. In her spare time, Glenda loves to read. She’s been married for 38 years and has two children, Rebecca and Ernie, and two amazingly beautiful granddaughters, Skye and Bri.

Dana Wilt-Wilkins, originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, began her career with us in 1985 as an evening Charge Technologist. After a few years she became one of the principle X-ray Techs in the OR. She now serves as a key Resource Technologist in the Fluoroscope area, and Charge Technologist on the weekends. She has made a home here in Salisbury with her husband Andy and daughter Morgan. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, listening to music and photography.

Pam Wootten joined the Medical Center as a full-time Pharmacist in 1985. Throughout these 30 years, Pam has made her mark as an advocate for “hands-on” Pharmacy and being an outstanding teacher. Pam has trained countless pharmacists to not only learn the Pharmacy policies and procedures, but to act in the best interest of the patient. Pam has also taught numerous pharmacy school students on clinical rotations at PRMC and tutored pharmacy technicians studying for their national certification exams. Pam spent many of these 30 years in the Pharmacy Sterile IV Prep Room. There she took on the responsibility of ensuring that our pharmacists and technicians were up to date on sterile preparation and calculation competencies. Pam’s tremendous work ethic led her to be honored as the Pharmacy Employee of the Quarter. For years, Pam coordinated all of the social gatherings for the Pharmacy Department. Outside of work, Pam continued her love of teaching by mentoring two students from grade school through their high school graduation. Pam enjoys spending time with her partner, Bunky, and her adorable dog, Tootsie. Pam also enjoys riding her bike and completed the Seagull Century at the “ripe young” age of 50!

Employees of the Quarter 2015/2016

2nd Quarter 2015 Administrative/Support Services Division: Todd Johnson, Materials Management Todd Johnson, a Core Technician in the Operating Room, was instrumental in the implementation of “tissue tracker” for the OR. Tissue tracking is a regulatory requirement that we have done on paper for years, but as more implantable items are introduced, the need to track and identify these items and patients has become imperative. Todd stepped up when the team lead was out, and had a guiding hand in ensuring the new process was implemented smoothly. It’s just one example of how Todd is always willing to go the extra mile, with enthusiasm and dedication. With the opening of new OR rooms, he has always been willing to come in early and stay late to make sure that everything needed was done to transform the surgical core into what it is today.

Professional Division: Kathleen Willey, Lab Administration Department Kathy is a laboratory information coordinator in the specimen processing area of the inpatient lab. She is also trained on all four lab courier routes and as an Outreach Laboratory Information Coordinator. Because of her wealth of knowledge about the different positions she has been on two lab teams working to make our outreach processes better. In addition to all of her hard work, she is dedicated and willing to go the extra mile. She’s always on time and has an excellent attendance record – including the day she got a call that her son was in the ED. When she saw him, made sure he was OK and that her husband was with him, she headed back to finish her shift. She also has come in to cover in the middle of the night when an overnight colleague was ill. She stays busy outside of work as well, as PTA secretary at Pinehurst, organizing book fairs, staff luncheons and a spring carnival. She also teaches Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She is always an invaluable asset.

Nursing Division: Courtney Vickers, Same Day Surgery Courtney is a well-respected member of Same Day Surgery, friendly, outgoing and always willing to help anyone with any task. She recently achieved her CAPA certification and her level III PAP. Courtney has been doing relief charge in SDS and is organized and helpful, making sure that during her day, everyone’s needs are met. Courtney is also taking on other responsibilities to help improve the care that SDS patients receive, such as developing educational materials for patients on discharge to remind them of medication side effects. She is also developing educational information for the SDS staff on blood thinners and anticoagulants to help improve patient safety. She serves as the unit’s Shared Leadership chairperson, and serves on the Healthy Work Culture committee. Courtney is an excellent nurse and will do whatever it takes to make sure that her patients and their families’ needs are met and that they have the best experience possible.

Nursing Division: Rachel Sharp, 3 Layfield Rachel consistently helps not only her own patients but other nurses’ patients as well. Colleagues say she offers to help give medications for her co-workers whom she knew were busy, even if she was really busy herself. She habitually responds to bed alarms anywhere in her work area. She responds to them quickly, as she is very focused on patient safety. She habitually responds to bed alarms anywhere in her work area. She responds to them quickly, showing me she is very conscientious about patient safety. Coworkers say she has more than once offered to take a report on a patient that was coming right around shift change, even when the patients were not going to be assigned to her. She just likes to help out her colleagues, especially when she knows they have end-of-shift paperwork to do and huddles to be in. Rachel recently earned a Daisy Award for her dedicated service. Her colleagues say they always see her doing an excellent job, working hard and always putting her own needs aside and putting patients first.

3rd Quarter 2015 Administrative/Support Services Division: Diana Hasenkopf, Business Intelligence and Clinical Analytics Diana is known for her attention to detail and prompt followup. Colleagues say her dedication to the organization shows in all she does. She’s also a vital part of Peninsula Regional’s United Way campaign, keeping track of the many details that are necessary to make it work, and helping make the incentive prizegiving possible. It’s a lot of extra work, but she does it willingly and with a great team spirit.

Professional Division: Dawn Werkheiser, Radiation Oncology Dawn has worked in radiation oncology for over 10 years, and has built a solid reputation of professionalism and attention to detail. She is responsible for treating patients on the TrueBeam and Trilogy linear accelerators, a job that requires extreme attention to detail and adherence to strict treatment procedures to ensure safe and accurate radiation treatments. Dawn has been a role model for other therapists with her attention to detail and eagerness to improve the patient treatment process. She’s always ready to share thoughts with managers and is an active participant in process improvement initiatives. Colleagues know her as a go-to therapist to answer questions thanks to her experience and expertise. She can always be counted on to get the job done!

Nursing Division: Pamela Parks, RN, 5 East Pamela has been a nurse for over 15 years. She started in transitional care, and filled many roles in the TCU in her time there, including discharge planner, social worker, scheduler and more. She then moved to 5 East, where she has provided excellent care to her patients. She is known for being a patient advocate and friend, listening to their needs and wants and attending to their overall well-being. Pamela has a special perspective on care now, since she suffered two strokes in the spring of 2014. Not only did she return to work with the same enthusiasm and skill she has always had, but she also helped our community by speaking at a Stroke Awareness Event, offering hope and support to others who have had a stroke. Her caring, positive attitude for patients and her willingness to teach, learn and take on any challenge is an inspiration.

Nursing Division: Deirdre Matthews, RN, Surgical Services “Dee” shows compassion for her patients no matter what the situation. She goes above and beyond the call of duty for colleagues and patients alike, whether it’s establishing rapport with those under her care or picking up extra shifts to cover a coworker – she will get on the case and scrub the floors if necessary. She goes out of her way to help other nurses as a preceptor, and is an essential part of our healthcare team as a dedicated night shift supervisor.

4th Quarter 2015 Administrative/Support Division: Sara Reynolds, Food and Nutrition Sara started her career at Peninsula Regional in 2004 as catering associate, where she often received compliments from patients. She worked in many different roles in Food & Nutrition, always bringing her attention to detail and professionalism to each role, including cashier, retail supervisor, patient supervisor and special event caterer. As a special event caterer, her flexible, quick customer service and ability to deliver on even last-minute requests earned her the gratitude of many administrative assistants. In 2013 she became the department administrative assistant, and continues to jump in to help when and where needed. She helps deliver trays to floors, rings up customers, delivers stock to areas when needed and will even help hospital employees heat up dishes they bring in for their department. Sara manages all invoices, payroll, and administrative duties, while still handling the big executive board meals, to ensure they are done to satisfaction. Sara works the Gala every year, helps bake cookies for Christmas for the departments, helps in all the special events and is a part of just about all the other catering off site. Sara is extremely dedicated to her position and the department. She always goes above and beyond, is proactive and is one of the most reliable members of the team.

Professional Division: Sara Shell, Physical Medicine Sara is a speech-language pathologist who just started at PRMC as a new graduate a little over a year ago, and in that time she has demonstrated tremendous growth as a clinician and as an advocate for her patients and families. Sara truly treats every patient she works with as she would want one of her loved ones to be treated. Recently she worked with a patient who was medically complex and had been in and out of hospitals for 9 months. The family said Sara was the only one who took the time to explain the patient’s challenges in a way they could fully understand. She got the patient working with a multidisciplinary team and helped advocate for clinical procedures that would improve his quality of life. When working with another patient who had a laryngectomy – not a common procedure at PRMC – she worked with the surgeon to get a voice prosthesis placed at the time of surgery, a new, evidence-based practice that had not been done here previously. She worked with the patient and her family preoperatively so they could know what to expect afterward and how to best care for the patient post-op. Outside of work, Sara volunteers her time in the Head & Neck Cancer Support Group helping patients cope with their treatments, and even volunteered as a guest bartender to raise funds for ALS patients. Her dedication and care make her a wonderful part of the physical medicine team.

Nursing Division: Fran Herring, Surgical Services Surgical Services consist of not just the OR, but Same Day Surgery, ORU, PACU, ENDO and CSR and Posting. Fran has multiple projects going on at any one time. She stays on track, engages the front-line staff and researches best practices to afford us the highest success rate possible. Fran worked with Patient Care Services clinical quality specialists to help mentor as their roles emerged. On any given day you will see Fran jump in and help all the units she supports, whether she is helping transport for PACU, filling staffing needs in ENDO, scrubbing a STAT c-section or jumping in to help with a trauma. Fran also assist with joint commission readiness and maintains all the OR policies. She is amazingly organized and extremely passionate about providing exceptional care to every patient. When a staff member was unexpectedly out for some time, Fran never hesitated to rearrange her personal life and do whatever was needed to get the work done. She is self-motivated, passionate, and one of the most dependable individuals to work on the Surgical Services team!

Nursing Division: Carol Mears, Pediatrics Carol is the backbone behind the night shift on Pediatrics. She handles the very tricky and sometimes sticky self-scheduling on our unit that has to be correlated with the NICU unit. She also is an extremely dedicated employee who encourages all of her co-workers. She constantly sacrifices for the unit and for other employees, working the days that no one wants and switching with those who need off. She encourages staff on the floor to become certified, as she herself has taken the time to become a Certified Pediatrics nurse. She participates on a Shared Leadership committee, and always precepts new employees to night shift. She is a wealth of knowledge and leads by example. Carol is on the clinical ladder and attends meetings, bringing back information to her unit and making sure they are up to date on new changes. She also shows that she cares about her colleagues’ morale in a special way: She founded the Sunshine Club, made up of Pediatric Staff who are responsible for recognition and education bulletin boards on the unit, and for making sure all employees receive a card and a gift on their birthday. She also organizes celebrations for babies, weddings, retirements and career advancements. Carol is a very quiet employee who never ever seeks recognition for all she does for the unit, but works tirelessly behind the scenes to make Pediatrics the best it can be.

1st Quarter 2016 Administrative/Support Division: Caryn Swistak, Materials Management Caryn is a core technician, and has been instrumental in covering open shifts in the OR core. Her positive attitude and strong work ethic make her an invaluable asset to the OR and Materials Management teams. Working in the OR can be a high-stress position, but Caryn handles any and all problems with a certainty that has earned her respect from the staff. She works well with any shift she flexes to, and is a source of knowledge for new employees, Always willing to go the extra mile, Caryn is managing all of these duties while also a full-time student. Great work!

Professional Division: Lynn Mitchell, Outpatient Lab Colleagues say Lynn is one of the kindest and most compassionate caregivers they have ever worked with. They says she has the ability to think ahead and see if there is a patient who needs a certain test that hasn’t been ordered; she brings it to the nurse’s attention and makes sure the right tests are ordered, without the patient having to be stuck more than necessary (something the patients surely appreciate). Lynn is known for her calm, patient demeanor when talking to pre-operative patients who are often quite anxious. She literally does give patients the warm blanket –retrieving wheelchairs and warm blankets when Same Day Surgery staff is busy, and even filling the blanket warmer. “She never seems to be having a bad day,” her colleagues say. Lynn is the epitome of service excellence and going above and beyond for the patients of PRMC.

Nursing Division: Carol Brinson, Endoscopy Coworkers say Carol is a “behind the scenes” person who helps to deliver exceptional service every day. Carol began her career at PRMC working with computers and still serves as the unit’s computer resource person; from mentoring new employees in the subtleties of Horizon Surgical Manager to troubleshooting Endoworks software for both staff and physicians. She is now working as a staff liaison with the EPIC adventure to ensure a smooth transition in November. She is committed to continuous improvement! Carol also serves as a Charge Nurse for Endoscopy and works hard to organize the unit’s day to flow as smoothly as possible. She knows each nurse’s strength and puts the puzzle together to use every resource. Carol’s skill as a GI nurse makes her an invaluable resource for all the GI room staff. She obtained her SGNA certification and led the way for the department on its most recent wave to become certified. As a great resource nurse, Carol shares her knowledge and experience to inspire growth and development. Carol is a Clinical Level 3 nurse and strives to provide and coordinate in-service activities to keep staff up to date on equipment and skills. Carol is devoted to safety for our patients, as well as holding herself and team members accountable for exceptional service. Carol has also spent extra hours working on Peninsula Surgery Center, helping to write policies and organize the new facility for our first state inspector’s visit. She was even caught under the sink in the scope reprocessing room, scrubbing the stainless steel! She takes pride in Peninsula Regional and the growth of our services in the community.

Nursing Division: Rosely Abraham, 3 Layfield What sets Rosely apart, her nominator says, is that she’s not only an exceptional nurse, but also an outstanding preceptor. “I started working at PRMC in January 2015. After classroom orientation, I was greeted on 3 Layfield by my preceptor, Rosely,” her nominator wrote. “Throughout my orientation period, Rosely displayed compassion for every patient and went above and beyond what was necessary to make them feel comfortable. Her attention to detail and nursing knowledge during every medical situation was remarkable. She far exceeded all my expectations… she made me feel comfortable and confident with my nursing skills and, I believe, has made me a better nurse. I believe my success at PRMC will always be because of how my career started. Peggy Naleppa has always stated that we need to treat every patient like our most beloved relative. This statement truly embodies Rosely as a nurse and person.” Rosely’s care in helping train the next generation of nurses has made her an outstanding Employee of the Quarter.
