NO-WAKE Hours are from
WATCH YOUR WAKE!
No wake has the same meaning as "idle speed," which means the slowest possible speed needed to maintain steerage or maneuverability.
When your rider falls, you don’t really need that huge wake anymore, do you. Consider coming to idle speed in a straight line before turning back to recover your rider so you don’t throw a big roller in every direction. Other boaters and our shoreline will appreciate it!

MUDDY WATER REMINDER
Sediment buildup on the lake bottom is the cause of one of the most expensive items in your AVPOA budget. Every time it rains, muddy water runs into the lake and the resulting silt build up causes shallowing with its attendant navigational problems as well nutrient overload which chokes shallow areas with weeds and algae. At some point, removal (dredging) is necessary and expensive. Fortunately, farmers in our watershed are doing their part to reduce sediment runoff by planting buffer strips and using other ecological practices as advised by the Knox County Farm Services Administration, Knox County Soil and Water Conservation District, Ohio State University Extension, and Natural Resources Conservation Services. AVPOA property owners are asked and advised to do their part by planting buffer strip vegetation along the lakefront and feeder streams and using silt fences any time the soil is disturbed.

Lake Lowering to begin 3rd week of November
The lowering is scheduled to begin on the week of November 15th and will be lowered approximately 6 feet below full pool (1004’). Members are responsible for removing their boat for AVPOA docks prior to this week to prevent damage. The lake is lowered annually to prevent wind and ice damage to docks.
Even though the lake will be lowered, it is still open all year round for fishing, boating, ect. If you can launch your boat, you are welcome to get out on the lake. Keep in mind the lowering process will take several weeks as it is done in stages to prevent erosion of the shoreline.

Mount Vernon, Ohio – Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau (KCCVB) received recognition for achievement in marketing innovation at the Ohio Travel Association’s (OTA) RUBY Awards presentation, held last Thursday at Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Sandusky, Ohio. Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau received a Certificate of Excellence award in the “Community Spirit” category for their work on this year’s TrailAPALOOZA event. “TrailAPALOOZA was an event put together in collaboration with our Park District and trail partners”, said KCCVB Executive Director, Carol Grubaugh. “This summer our county completed the final corridor of our multi-purpose trail, along the Heart of Ohio Trail in Centerburg. We knew we wanted to take the time to really celebrate what the trail means to our communities and guests; and TrailAPALOOZA was a wonderful celebration of just that.” Held June 24th, at the CA&C Visitor Center, this event brought in nearly
300 trail users together to enjoy a day of group rides, giveaways, food trucks and more along the trail. “We hope this is an event we can continue to do as our trail system is such a huge part of what makes Knox County a great place to enjoy and visit”, said Grubaugh. KCCVB was also recognized as a finalist in the Travel Guide category. “We poured so much heart into our Travel Guide this year”, said KCCVB Marketing Manager, Olivia Toth. “It’s a huge honor to be recognized at the state-level and gets us excited as we plan our next guide that will be released in 2024!” To request your Knox County Visitor Guide, email marketing@ visitknoxohio.org or to pick up a guide, stop into the CA&C Visitors Center, 501 South Main Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050, M-F 9:00AM-5:00PM. Captain’s Corner
I would like to address dock /ramp edict in this edition. There are no Ohio laws that law enforcement has to enforce at the boat ramp or public dock. There is however a lot of common courtesy that is implied. If possible, prep your boat at your house before leaving to make sure you have all the needed equipment (PFD’s, fire extinguisher, type IV throwable, and any other essentials) for the day. Once at the ramp, if you need to prep some more, then pull into the prep area and try to not block the ramp. Here you can take off your transom tie downs, motor support bar, and turn on a blower fan if needed. This way once you back down the ramp all you need to do is release your bow strap. When returning from a day of boating, try to have someone in your party able to drive the tow vehicle or operate the vessel to load onto the trailer. In having this extra person it will help speed up the loading process and make things flow better at the ramp. Avoid tying
up your vessel to the dock beside the ramps, as this causes congestion. There is usually a curtesy dock you can tie up to so you don’t block the ramp and you can retrieve the tow vehicle. If someone else is in process of getting their tow vehicle, leaving your boat at the ramp dock, will only slow down their process and back everything up. Once the vessel is loaded and bow strap secured, make sure to pull up and away from the ramp. You can pull over in a prep area and secure the vessel to the trailer, remove any items that might not stay in place traveling down the road, and dry the boat off if needed. The thing to remember is while at the ramp, the tow vehicle is the one that designates the position in line, not your boat. In following these ideas, loading and unloading your vessel should be a fairly quick and painless for everyone.

Lacey Filkins named Executive Director of Experience Mount Vernon
{7}
NOVEMBER 2022
S
Filkins currently serves as a Legal Assistant and the Marketing Manager for Kidwell & Cunningham and Owl Creek Title Agency after working as the Director of First-Year Experience and Student Success at Kenyon College for seven years. “We look forward to utilizing Lacey’s skills in community-building, marketing, and event coordination to continue to grow the Experience Mount Vernon brand and build upon the solid foundation laid by Anthony McNeal,” said Todd Taylor, Experience Mount Vernon Board President. McNeal, who assumed oversight of Experience Mount Vernon, formerly known as Main Street Mount Vernon, in February 2020, will be transitioning out of the role on November 18th.
The Experience Mount Vernon Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Lacey Filkins to the role of Executive Director, effective October 31.
“We have appreciated all of the work Anthony has done over the last two and half years to grow and streamline the work of Experience Mount Vernon, even amidst the significant challenges of COVID-19,” said Taylor, “he will be missed.” “I believe a vibrant downtown is a powerful force in building and sustaining a dynamic community,” said Filkins. “As a resident of Knox County for nearly ten years, I have been fortunate to witness and celebrate the economic and community growth downtown has seen. I am excited about the opportunity to take a more active role in the advancement of our community through further enhancing downtown Mount Vernon.” Filkins grew up in West Salem, Ohio, and moved to Knox County in May 2013 after the completion of her masters degree to work for Kenyon College. She currently lives in Mount Vernon with her husband and young son.

The day after walking with three volunteers on their October 6 walk, I talked with volunteer Susan Guttormsen. Susan said they had a similar “what in the world is going on” reaction on July 9, when they didn’t see any, compared, for example, to the 10

1 small loaf (1 pound) day-old crusty sourdough bread, (not sandwich bread) ½ cup salted butter or vegan butter 2 leeks, halved, thinly sliced, and rinsed well (2 cups) 4 celery stalks, diced (1¾ cups) 3 garlic cloves, chopped ¾ teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ¼ cup chopped sage Heaping ¼ cup chopped parsley 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves 1½ to 2 cups vegetable broth 2 eggs, beaten 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease an 8x11 or 9x13-inch baking dish. 2. Tear the bread into 1-inch pieces and place in a very large bowl. 3. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the leeks, celery, garlic, salt, and pepper, and sauté for 5 minutes, turning the heat to low halfway through. Pour the leek mixture over the bread and sprinkle with the sage, parsley, rosemary, and thyme. Use your hands to toss until coated. Pour 1½ cups of the broth evenly over the stuffing and toss to coat. Add the eggs and toss again. The bread should feel pretty wet. If it’s still a bit dry, mix in the remaining ½ cup of broth. The amount you use will depend on how dense and dry your bread was. 4. Transfer the mixture to the baking dish. If making ahead, stop here, cover the dish with foil, and store in 5.
the refrigerator until ready to bake. When ready to bake, drizzle the olive oil on top and bake, covered, for 30 minutes. If the stuffing is still pretty wet, uncover the dish and bake for 5 to 10 more minutes to crisp the top a bit.

counted 34 monarchs. So the news is not all bleak locally. In my 2 ½ hour walk with three volunteers on October 13, I learned to think like a butterfly: “Sixty degrees Fahrenheit or warmer--fly and look for food; 90 degrees, wind, or rain—hunker down in the grass; extended season for New England asters--more food; woods-don’t go there.” I learned that in the conversation among the three volunteers I was with that day: Marcia Crim, Janet Chandler, and Beth Waller.

The list includes 5 additional volunteers for a total of 14. Missing the day I was there was

Jennifer S. Holland Unlikely Friendships Do you like animals? Do you have a dog or a cat? Some people have both, and the two actually get along! That’s not so rare; but a book called “Unlikely Friendships” by Jennifer S. Holland has “47 Remarkable Stories” from the world wide “Animal Kingdom”. It is a New York Times Best Seller, and is quoted saying “This book is amazing. It shows the power of friendship.” Each story has a tiny quote at the top of the page giving the country of the story and the year. I found this very helpful. So ... fourty seven stories? Don’t let that throw you. Some are only three pages long, and the most I found was five pages. But OOOH, the pictures are the most wonderful part of the book! This would be an excellent story book for children ... even small kiddies, and would be a great Christmas Present! Many of the photos are of the vastly different
animals cuddling together. Who are these animals? Well, everything from fish to birds, monkeys, dogs, bears, elephants, pigs, cats, lions, deer, squirrels, snakes, hamsters, rhinos, goats, zebras ... a wonderful way for children to learn all kinds of creatures. Do YOU even know what an eland is, or a mouflon, orangutan, caracal, iguana, oryx, capybara, kookaburra, or macaque? Grown-ups will have a great time, too! And the book begins with a quote from the Bible, Ecclesiastes 4:11---”If two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one be warm alone?” Two of the creatures are even people! Have fun with this book!

EASY, NO FUSS THAHNKSGIVING TURKEY
1 12-20 pound turkey 1 onion , peeled and quartered 1 lemon , quartered 1 apple (your favorite kind), quartered .75 ounce container fresh rosemary * .75 ounce container fresh thyme * .75 ounce container fresh sage * For the herb butter: 1 cup unsalted butter , softened 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6-8 cloves garlic , minced fresh chopped herbs
1. If the turkey is frozen: Thaw in the fridge, 24 hours for every 5 pounds of Turkey. I like to give myself 1 extra day, just to be safe. 2. 3. Remove the thawed turkey from the fridge 1 hour before roasting, to let it come to room temperature. 4. Adjust your oven rack so the turkey will sit in the center of the oven. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. 5. Make the herb butter by combining room temperature butter, minced garlic, salt, pepper, one tablespoon fresh chopped rosemary, one tablespoon fresh chopped thyme, and half a tablespoon of fresh chopped sage. (You’ll use the remaining fresh herbs for stuffing inside the cavity of the turkey) 6. Remove turkey from packaging and remove the neck and giblets from the inside the cavities of the bird. (Reserve them for gravy, if you want, or discard them). Pat the turkey very dry with paper towels. 7. Season the cavity of the turkey with salt and pepper. Stuff it with the quartered lemon, onion and apple and leftover herbs. 8. Use your fingers to loosen and lift the skin above the breasts (on the top of the turkey) and smooth a few tablespoons of the herb butter underneath. 9. Tuck the wings of the turkey underneath the turkey and set the turkey on a roasting rack inside a roasting pan*. 10. Microwave the remaining herb butter mixture for 30 seconds (it doesn’t need to be completely melted--just really softened). Use a basting brush to brush the remaining herb butter all over the outside of the turkey, legs and wings. 11. Roast at 325 degrees F for about 13-15 minutes per pound, or until internal temperature (inserted on middle of thigh and breast) reaches about 165 degrees. 12. (I remove the turkey from the oven once it reaches 160 degrees. Then, I tent it with foil, and let it rest on the counter. It will continue cooking under the foil, to reach 165 degrees F.) 13. ***Check the turkey about halfway through cooking, and once the skin gets golden brown, cover the top of the turkey with tinfoil, to protect the breast meat from overcooking. Alternately, you could start cooking the turkey with it tented in foil, then during the last hour or so of cooking you can take the foil off to let the turkey brown. Allow turkey to rest for 20-30 minutes before carving. 14. Reserve any drippings and juice remaining in your roasting pan to make turkey gravy. 15.

Happy Fall! A look back at what the Apple Valley Red Hatters did in Fall of 2012. They went up to Cleveland to take a ride on the Lolly Trolley! How fun! Lolly the Trolley left Cleveland for the sunny skies of Florida after serving the Cleveland area for 37 years! The Red Hatters will be heading up to Cleveland for a ride on the Funny Bus in June of 2023. Sounds exciting and I cannot wait for the fun afternoon! Hope you will join us! In the meantime, a group went up to the Amish Country to see the play Josiah for President. It was a nice afternoon and all enjoyed the play, as well as lunch at The Dutch Valley Restaurant. Thanks to Sue and Mary Lynn for taking the reins on this one for me! Our next gathering is Nov 2 and we will be going to Camp Ohio for a fun day planned by Sue Caudill. The camp was booked up for October and so it was decided to move our meeting to the first Wednesday in November, since we won't be meeting later in the month due to Thanksgiving. Please send all RSVP's to Sue Caudill at [email protected] or 740-816-3417. Sue has been involved with this camp for years and promises a very fun day, including a hay ride! Bundle up and join us! In December, we will meet for a Cookie Exchange and the making of an ornament. I'll be your hostess and it will be at Floral Valley. Time and date to be determined soon. Please look for more information on this in the next issue of the Cider Press or via email. If you would like to join this wonderful group of ladies in the Red Hat Club, please do! We have lots of fun activities planned for 2023. This club has been in existence since 2005 and we are still going strong after a lull due to Covid. It's so nice to be gathering again. Please contact Mary Dozier at 925-784-9735 or [email protected] for more information. I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

We work hard to maintain our good name and reputation by delivering nothing less than excellence in all that we put our hands to do. We understand the value of word-of-mouth referrals especially in a small community like ours.
Old World Style Craftsmanship Meets Modern-Day Technology
Here at Quality Construction Services, we recognize the craftsmanship the Amish produce through their highly skilled labor. Our mechanical contractors are fully insured, licensed professionals in the state of Ohio; delivering safe, dependable installations.
We use tools to make your life easier
EXCEPTIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP AND COMMUNICATION
We create a cloud based project file that allows our customers to track progress, submit concerns, and even choose selections! This tool is also what we use on our end to stay on budget, on time, and keep you a part of the entire build process! Even if you are out-of-town, out-of-state, or out-of-thecountry, the use of industry leading software keeps you up-to-date.
CONCEPT VISUALIZATION CUSTOM DESIGN Whenever we start a new project, we create a 3D rendering of the before and after. When we create the before, this allows us to see what obstacles we are looking at when it comes to demolition or construction. The final rendering allows both parties to see a dream come true.

In the fall, Apple Valley Garden Club members spend time cleaning out flower and vegetable beds, and preparing for the upcoming winter. But it’s also time for lots of autumn activities, made even more special by the cooler temperatures and clear skies we often enjoy in mid-autumn. Here’s a little bit of what we’ve been up to. In September, we donned our finest tea party clothing — including hats! — and enjoyed a full, formal tea. With historical background information provided by Pat Hassar, a Knox County resident and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, we learned the role tea played in the formation of our nation. We tasted a couple of teas, which were paired with food that make up a “low tea" — cucumber and radish sandwiches, scones, tea cakes and other treats. (A “high tea,” by contrast, would include meats and cheeses, and serve as an afternoon meal.) It was a truly elegant affair! In October, members put on their crafting hats to create items for the Johnny Appleseed Bazaar. Our mini stuffed fabric Chrismas trees — placed on circles of wood and illuminated with fairy lights — were a hit among buyers. This turned into quite a fund raiser for the club, and we may reprise these trees next year. Other October events included a field trip to Dawes Arboretum in Newark, a guest luncheon, and a regional meeting of a number of area garden clubs. Our November meeting will have members crafting the creative pieces that will decorate the Food for the Hungry holiday at Floral Valley. We’ll meet at 9:30 a.m., Nov. 16, at the AV Club House for a business meeting and the craft. Anyone wanting to join the Garden Club or learn more about it can contact one of our two co-presidents: Jill Sponseller (330-845-0057; [email protected]); or Jana Stewart (740-326-6018; [email protected]). As always, we wish all of Apple Valley well as we continue to enjoy the beautiful fall season.

APPLE CORE The women of Apple Core traveled to the Buxton Inn in Granville on October 13 for lunch and tour. It is the oldest operating Inn in Ohio (1812). The Inn was a tavern, post office and stage coach stop between Newark and Columbus in the 1800s. Many celebrities have patronized the Buxton including Presidents Lincoln, Harrison and McKinley. Arlene, our tour guide, showed us the ballroom, speakeasy, Underground Railroad tunnel that connected to the safe house next door, the secret hiding place for slaves waiting for an escape to Canada, plus she explained several happenings at the Inn. No one in our group reported seeing the haunted cat or Major Buxton, smelling the perfume of “The Lady in Blue”, or hearing any unexplainable sounds that have been reported by former guests! LOOKING FORWARD Apple Core’s next gathering will be November 10, 9:30 at Apple Valley Clubhouse. Corrine Lund will show original works, talk about calligraphy, water color, drawings, fabric art and photography, and tell how these various art media have been important in her life. If you plan to attend or wish more information about Apple Core, call, text or email Sue Caudill 740-816-3417 or [email protected]. Also, save December 8 for our Christmas brunch. Service projects this year will be Sanctuary, Blood Drive, and clothing and toys for children. Apple Valley women of all ages are invited to join Apple Core. It is a wonderful way to meet new friends and share in historical, entertaining, service and social activities with Apple Valley neighbors and guests

Knox County Foundation offers Charitable University to strengthen area nonprofit leadership MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Knox County Foundation will host two non-profit board member trainings through the Ohio Attorney General’s Office this November. The training, titled Charitable University, focuses on putting tools in the hands of charitable board members and key leaders so they can govern their organizations with maximum effectiveness for impact. “We are excited to partner with the Ohio Attorney General’s office to bring Charitable University to Knox County. This training will cover a broad range of topics related to serving on a nonprofit board and will be beneficial to current, new and prospective board members as well as nonprofit leadership staff,” stated Program Director Lisa Lloyd. Charitable University provides guidance on board governance and policies, financial reporting and internal controls, fundraising issues, government filings and recordkeeping, and charitable gaming and bingo—all of the basics needed to protect the valuable resources entrusted to nonprofit organizations to make a difference. “We are always looking for opportuni-
ties to support our nonprofit partners and ensure they have the tools and resources needed to drive their mission forward in the most effective way,” said Lloyd. “Having board members and charitable leaders who understand the intricacies of board service is one of the best ‘tools’ for all nonprofits.” Those who participate in the training will receive Charitable University completion certificates from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and will be listed on the AG’s web page with others who make this training investment throughout the state. Participants can choose one of two identical training sessions will be offered: Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. (dinner provided) at Foster Hall in Ariel Arena at MVNU, or Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. (breakfast provided) at MVNU’s The Gathering Place. For more information or to register, visit: www.knoxcf. org/charitableuniversity. Spaces are limited, so RSVPs are required by Friday, Nov. 4. For questions, contact Lisa Lloyd at [email protected] or 740-392-3270, ext. 2.
