Philosophiae Doctor / Doctor of Philosophy CHIPFUVA, Tsitsi
Ekonomiese en Bestuurswetenskappe met Toerismebestuur / Economic and Management Sciences with Tourism Management
Tsitsi Chipfuva was born in Harare, Zimbabwe to Felix and Junior Chipfuwa from Chesa Farms in Mt Darwin. Tsitsi completed her BTech degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management at Chinhoyi University of Technology in 2003, and her MSc degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management at the University of Zimbabwe in 2007. She worked in the tourism industry until she was employed as a staff development fellow at the University of Zimbabwe. In 2008, she joined Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Botswana as principal lecturer, and in 2009, the University of Botswana as lecturer. She moved to the Botswana Accountancy College in 2011 to introduce Tourism programmes in partnership with the University of Derby (UK). In 2014, she was transferred to Francistown to introduce programmes in Tourism, Hospitality and Salon Management still under Botswana Accountancy College and UOD partnership. She is currently the portfolio manager for leisure programmes at BAC. Tsitsi has published research papers and book chapters related to tourism and poverty alleviation and presented papers at several academic conferences. She conducted a European Union-funded research project with 3A-Step based in the Netherlands on pro-poor tourism. Tsitsi is married to Liberty Chidzuu, and they have a son, Kupakwashe and a daughter Kunayeishe. In her thesis, Developing a pro-poor tourism framework for Zimbabwe, Tsitsi explored the potential of diversifying rural livelihoods by harnessing tourism opportunities to increase income levels in Mashonaland West Province. The main income-generating activity in this area, at the time of the study, was small-scale agriculture, whose productivity was declining. To stimulate economic activities, tourism was identified as an option that could improve livelihoods in the area. The developed framework successfully integrates tourism in rural communities to cushion them from declining incomes and falling agricultural productivity. The framework provides a different view where the rural community can take responsibility for their own tourism resources and benefit therefrom. The importance of domestic tourists, even as excursionists, was highlighted. Promotor/Promoter: Prof E Slabbert Medepromotor/Co-promoter: Dr LA Tseane-Gumbi
~~~ Philosophiae Doctor / Doctor of Philosophy DU TOIT, Anna Maria Elizabeth
Bedryfsadministrasie / Business Administration
Anna Maria Elizabeth (Marietjie) du Toit, the eldest daughter of two, of the late Schalk van Aswegen and Marie Erasmus, was born on 7 November 1965. She attended school at Hendrina and Middelburg, Mpumalanga, but finished her matric at Louis Trichardt High School in Limpopo. She obtained her first diploma in Police Administration, after which she completed her BTech Business Administration at Unisa and her Master of Business Administration at the NWU in 2012. She worked as a police officer at the level of a Colonel, being transferred to the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) as a senior manager. Hereafter, she worked at the University of Limpopo, where after she started her own business and furthered her studies in entrepreneurship. During her PhD research, she facilitated school principals and business leaders in the Partners for Possibility programme and lectured for Milpark Education. Marietjie has been married to Jan du Toit for 35 years and has three children, Juan, married to Kim, and Mari du Toit. In her thesis, Exploring the career progression of women entrepreneurs in South Africa, a qualitative descriptive design was used to investigate the experiences of women entrepreneurs. The findings indicated that women who want to transition to an entrepreneurial career draw on prior skills and education, previous experience, self-knowledge, and willingness to learn to action their transition intent. The findings provided valuable insights into how women entrepreneurs’ careers develop towards establishing the legitimacy of an entrepreneurial career and a theory of entrepreneurial careers. A new perspective is introduced to entrepreneurship using social cognitive career theory to bridge entrepreneurship theory with career theory. Furthermore, the impact that the perceptions of success have on women entrepreneurs’ businesses and their self-actualisation strengthens entrepreneurship knowledge. Philosophiae Doctor / Doctor of Philosophy GABA, Farai
Ekonomiese en Bestuurswetenskappe met Ekonomie / Economic and Management Sciences with Economics
Farai Gaba is the first son of Mr Marufu and Mrs Pauline Gaba. He was born on 3 September 1984 in Buhera District, eastern Zimbabwe. Farai completed his Bachelor of Commerce honours degree in Economics at Midlands State University, Zimbabwe, in 2009, with an upper second class. Afterwards, he completed his Master of Commerce Degree in Economics at the Midlands State University in 2014, with an upper second class. Farai is a career investment banker, and is currently working for the Public Service Pension Fund (since 2014) as investment and portfolio director. In his thesis, An investigation of circumstantial and durational urban poverty by developing a new multidimentional measure, the case of Harare province, Farai investigated circumstantial and durational urban poverty by adapting the UNDPs MPI in order to develop a new multidimensional poverty measure for Harare Province. The study provides a unique approach to multidimensional poverty investigation. Farai confirmed the existence of higher multidimensional poverty across all locations in Harare Province. The study established that the durational poverty trajectory in Harare has been increasing since 2010. This study could be the first to unravel durational poverty intricacies in Zimbabwe. Moreover, the study exposed that poverty perceptions in Harare are built around economic, political and social justice facets. It was found that poverty drivers in Harare are a result of economic factors; nonetheless, political and social factors were also confirmed to drive people to a poverty trap in the city. He matriculated with distinction from Central College of Dehiwala in 1980, and enrolled for his LLB degree at the University of Colombo in 1981. He obtained his honours degree (Law) in 1985 at the University of Colombo, and his MBA degree (International Management) in 2012 at the University of Wales, Cardiff Campus, United Kingdom. He has worked as a senior lecturer at the Botho University in Botswana since 2014 to date. He has presented 19 research conferences papers and published 12 research papers. In his thesis, A Framework for Greening Universities in Knowledge Based Economy, Botswana, Liyanage investigated the current knowledge production structure of universities using the case of the University of Botswana. Stakeholders suggest the reconfiguration of the eight processes in a conventional university structure, which are green governance, culture, three pillars of sustainability, education, research, internal operations, community outreach, and reporting. Accordingly, he introduced a green university model integrating all eight processes. Conventional universities can use the model to transform into green universities. Green universities can produce the green knowledge and innovation needed for sustainable development. His findings attracted a book publication by Springer Nature Publishers (in print). The book in print will guide green transformation at universities worldwide. Promotor/Promoter: Prof FG Netswera Medepromotor/Co-promoter: Prof JA Meyer Medepromotor/Co-promoter: Prof CJ Botha
He has been married for over 20 years to Nomvula Pretty, and they are blessed with four beautiful kids (Reitumetse, Lethabo, Busisiwe and Makabongwe). Ke Mokone – Mmina Tlhantlhagane! In his thesis, Development of an economic empowerment framework for small-scale agro-processors in South Africa, Benjamin used mixed methods research to identify and analyse the critical tenets for developing a practical economic empowerment framework for small-scale agro-processors in South Africa. He indicated that despite policy changes in South Africa since 1994, disadvantaged communities in post-colonial African countries still face high levels of disempowerment as most post-colonial governments failed to change the structure of the economy they inherited. This study was the first to develop a practical economic empowerment framework for small-scale agro-processing enterprises to participate in the formal economic system. His main findings are that capacity building, business networks resources, and entrepreneurship influence the economic empowerment of small-scale agro-processors in South Africa. However, capacity building is the most significant tenet for the economic empowerment framework. Promotor/Promoter: Prof VM Mmbengwa Medepromotor/Co-promoter: Prof JN Lekunze
In his thesis, A critical review of e-marketing strategies implemented in the tourism industry of Botswana, Seth reviewed e-marketing strategies relevant to small and medium tourism enterprises (SMTEs) in Botswana. While aware of the strengths and weaknesses of social media, SMTEs were not optimising this tool in terms of customer relationship and service quality management. The study revealed insufficient resources, lack of time, skills capacity and knowledge, management support, security concerns, and slow internet penetration in Botswana as the major barriers to the adoption and implementation of e-marketing. It was found that having resources available does not guarantee success, and significant changes should be implemented to benefit from e-marketing. Most importantly, the critical review highlights the way forward for SMTEs to grow their businesses more effectively. Promotor/Promoter: Prof E Slabbert
Human capital is a crucial driver of companies’ financial performance and value creation. The measurement and disclosure of human capital have been a challenge in the Zimbabwean mining sector. Her study adopted a mixed-method research approach that followed a pragmatic philosophy and a sequential exploratory research design. The findings revealed that there is no accepted framework to report aspects of human capital. Companies measure and disclose human capital based on their immediate contextual setting. She recommends a framework for measuring and disclosing human capital in the Zimbabwean mining companies that transcends immediate contextual settings. In his thesis, Modelling primary health care workforce needs towards health professions education and employment investment planning in Ghana, James used a sequential multi-method to develop an need-based model for predicting number and mix of health professionals needed to meet universal health coverage demands and investment cost into health professions education to produce the needed workforce. He systematically applied the model to forecast the needs and supply of 11 health professionals in Ghana, where he found a 33% shortage of health professionals (shortfall of 73,203), which could increase to 161,502 by 2035. It was recommended that Ghana increases the intake of pharmacy technicians by 7.5-fold, general practitioners by 100%, and general nurses by 55%, whilst scaling down that of midwives by 15%. At least US$480.39 million investments would be required in education and US$1.762 billion per annum (up to US$2.374 billion in 2035) to maintain jobs and employ those to be trained. She is married to Chris Conradie and has two children. In her thesis, Associations between maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy and early childhood development in Johannesburg, South Africa, Cornelia identified three distinct nutrient patterns followed by pregnant women in an urban setting. These nutrient patterns were associated with ultrasound-derived fetal growth, and growth and neurodevelopment of infants up to the age of 12 months. Nutrient patterns with a higher dietary quality were inversely correlated with child social-emotional development as food sources lacked essential long-chain fatty acids. The pattern with a lower dietary quality resulted in shorter fetal femur length and lower weight- and length-for-age in infants. This study emphasises the importance of nutrition during pregnancy on infant growth and development. Cornelia has already published one article, and two more will be submitted soon. Recently, following his Ph.D. research, he has published a thought-provoking article The in-group/outgroup dynamics of Nerdrum’s positioning of Kitsch as a reflection of situatedness within contemporary art (South African Journal Art History). His current research interests include the work of Pauline Gutter and interdisciplinary research on intersecting aspects of emotion in figurative art and music. his thesis, Dissensus within dissensus: Odd Nerdrum’s Kitsch movement and the aesthetic regime of Jacques Rancière, offers a critical inquiry into Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum’s Kitsch movement. Nerdrum’s artworks speak of meticulous, representational paintings, his style and technique, reminiscent of old-world Western, canonised “mastery” - an unwelcome resurrection for the “woke”, conceptual contemporary artworld. This has led Nerdrum to position himself provocatively as a marginalised outcast - a self-professed Kitsch painter. He questions with recourse to Rancière’s aesthetic regime how Nerdrum’s Kitsch movement can be regarded as a manifestation of dissensus that ironically demonstrates the need for further dissensual action as the Kitsch movement perpetuates a new hierarchy within (Western) artistic expression. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse of the politics and production of art, by critically evaluating the problematic perpetuation of hierarchy in the artworld. Then he obtained a Professional Certificate in Social Work (School of Social Work, Accra) and worked as a Senior Social Welfare Officer, then team leader and executive director of various aid agencies. In 1999 he completed both his Diploma of Theology (University of Cape Coast) and Licentiate in Theology (St Nicholas Seminary, Cape Coast). He was later (2007) able to complete his Master of Arts in Theological Studies (Episcopal Divinity School) in Cambridge Massachusetts, USA. Paul has served in many different capacities as an Anglican Priest, including parish priest, archdeacon, Lecturer and Dean of Students (St Nicholas Seminary) and now as Director of Mission and Vocations, mostly located in the Tamale Diocese in Ghana. His PhD studies have been done alongside his ministry in the Anglican Church and his involvement with another aid project. His dual concerns for the church and for the practical needs of the people are evident in his thesis. In his thesis, Ploygamy and the teachings of the Church: The case of the Anglican Diocese of Tamale, Paul indicates that though the Anglican Church in Ghana teaches monogamy, many members practice polygamy, following their own cultural practices. This study presents some biblical, pastoral, and practical perspectives in this ongoing conflict. Monogamy is found to have well-established biblical roots. The results of a questionnaire administered to a sample of two hundred people in the Tamale Diocese found that monogamy was their ideal form of marriage. However, most Christians rather follow customary practices, showing the need for a better understanding of both biblical teachings and African polygamy. Recommendations are that the Anglican Church should enhance its clergy’s biblical understanding of marriage, correct misunderstandings of scientific facts, study research on the social disadvantages of polygamy, and establish pre-marital and post-marital teaching for couples. Philosophiae Doctor / Doctor of Philosophy RAVEN, Alan
Teologie met Nuwe Testament / Theology with New Testament
Alan Raven was raised with his sister (Francoise) and twin brother (Richard) by their mother Amanda in a Christian home. He married Sonja in 1999 and the Lord has blessed them with two daughters. After matriculating in 1993 at Sentraal Hoërskool in Bloemfontein, he obtained Bachelor and Honours degrees in Civil Engineering at the University of Pretoria in 1997 and 2001 respectively. Following a career in Engineering of almost 14 years, he studied Theology and graduated through the Australian College of Theology in 2016. He has served as a church elder for more than ten years and as a pastor for about seven years. He is currently co-pastoring with his twin brother at Horizon Reformed Christian Fellowship in Perth, Australia. In his thesis, The meaning and teaching of νόμος in James, Alan studied what James means by and teaches concerning “nómos” (νόμος) in his Letter. This was done in order to gain clarity about the role and relevance of the Torah (God’s Law) in Christianity. The Study concluded that, with James’s use of five different “nómos” terms, he has essentially one and the same Torah in mind: God’s Torah given through Moses – with particular focus on the moral and weightier matters of God’s Law. The Study also concluded that James’s teaching about the nature, content, and function of the Torah is grounded in the Old Testament and supported by the New Testament. Moreover, it makes a significant and indispensable contribution to the New Testament’s doctrine of the Law of God. Promotor/Promoter: Prof FP Viljoen Medepromotor/Co-promoter: Dr TA Van Aarde
