mid-sized manufacturers – almost two thirds (64%) of the New Zealand manufacturing businesses surveyed – said they have invested in innovation for their business over the past 12 months, with key areas for investment by this group including new software solutions to manage their business (52%), more automation of manual processes (51%), improving production lines (41%) and tightening or improving supply chain (39%). Those results make for very interesting reading, and those surveyed do not intend to stop the direction that they have embarked upon. “For businesses that want to thrive in any environment, innovation is absolutely key and the manufacturers we surveyed clearly recognise the meaningful impact changing their

business approach and investing in innovation can have on their performance moving forward,” says Jo Tozer of MYOB. Why the new direction? Because their industries are changing whether that be through a need to be more eco-friendly, a gender re-balancing, escalating automation, new staffing ways and much more. As they say, change with the times or get left well behind. But innovation does not necessarily need to be on a grand scale. Often, it’s the small that can make the most difference. Take Brightsite’s new take on delivering its Viafix product with the end-user in mind (p6): it’s a pot hole filler where a packaging size change has occurred simply due to connecting to the people they do business with.

What Brightsite found out was there is now a huge preference for its original 14kg version. This preference has been brought about by change, with more end-users now being women who struggle with the bulky, and heavy, 25kg bag. Connecting – a very simple solution – has meant Brightsite now has the knowledge that its product goes to an industry that has experienced a large increase of women involved in New Zealand road maintenance. Sometimes change is made due to foresight and sometimes due to being forced. But change need not be massive; meaningful will do. Publisher

e Pūtea Rangahau a Marsden, the Marsden Fund, has allocated $77.391 million (excluding GST) to 113 research projects led by researchers in New Zealand. These grants support excellent research in the humanities, engineering, mātauranga, mathematics, science, and the social sciences for three years. The Marsden Fund continues to provide strong support for up-and-coming researchers, with 41 Fast-Start grants awarded, for a total of $14,760,000 (excluding GST). Fast-Start grants are designed to encourage the development of independent research and build momentum for exceptional careers in New Zealand. This sort of news is great for industry and comes at a time when innovation within industry is critical as much change beings to occur, and will continue to occur… and at even greater pace. Many of my editorials over the past five or so years have focused on the change that is now occurring at a rapid rate – it’s not rocket science, it’s knowing your history as technology and people ride the wave that now sees itself at the apex of a very steep exponential curve. In fact, MYOB has just released its latest ‘Mid-market Snapshot’ (p8) where it has found that businesses that are in growth phases are achieving great results simply by doing things differently. The report showed that

BUTTON-FIX: THE EASY PANEL FIXING SOLUTION Hi-Q Components has announced it is now distributing ‘Button-Fix’ which makes panel fixing easy. Designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom, the Button-fix concept is simple: robust buttons are attached to the background structure and the mating fixes are attached to the removable panel. Push on the panel firmly until the button-fixes ‘click’. There are numerous applications for this fast

and easy invisible panel fixing system. Button-Fix is used to fix wall, ceiling, cabinet and signage panels along with many other uses in marine, acoustic, interior fit out, furniture, artwork and display. There are five main types of buttonfix connectors that allow panels to be connected in parallel, at 90 degrees, rebated, bonded and metal for heavy duty applications.

FILLER NOW MORE FEMALE FRIENDLY Recently Britesite conducted trials on shipping and packaging methodology of their Viafix pot hole filler, in order to improve service and counter escalating shipping costs. “We learnt a lot, particularly in regard packaging weight, where there is a preference for our original 14 kg bag as opposed to the 25 kg trial Bag,” says Bob Currie, managing director at Brightsite. The lighter bag preference is due to the increasing number of women involved in New Zealand road

maintenance. Companies such as Downer NZ Ltd, Fulton Hogan and Livable Streets have woman on their cyclic crews, says Currie. A simple experience like packaging weight is a good lesson that all manufacturers need to consider, ‘Is my packaging weight suitable for women?’ While reducing unit weight increases packaging costs, consideration he says should be given to the potential of less issues in regard, back strain and sprains for both men and women.

BROKK SURFACE GRINDER 530 Brokk has announced the addition of the Brokk Surface Grinder 530 (BSG 530) attachment for material removal, such as paint and asbestos, surface preparation and polishing on walls, floors and ceilings in renovation and restoration applications. Compatible with the Brokk 170, Brokk 200 and Brokk 300, the BSG 530 allows users to tackle a range of previously labour-intensive projects up to 10 times faster. Pairing the surface grinder attachment with Brokk’s remotecontrolled operation also offers greater worker safety over manual methods. www.brokk.com

6

November 2022

The BSG 530 is fully remote-controlled through the Brokk control box, offering an automated method of stripping plaster, contaminated material, tile adhesive and paint from walls, ceilings and floors. The pairing efficiently removes material through constant contact and high pressure on the surface, resulting in a more even, consistent removal over large areas that is not possible with handheld grinding tools. The attachment can reach 2,300 newtons of grinding pressure for wall applications and 1,100 newtons of grinding pressure for ceiling applications.

NORD’S SOLUTION FOR HEAVY-DUTY LOGISTICS From belt conveyors and bucket elevators to lifting equipment; with its wide portfolio of MaxxDrive industrial gear units, Nord Drivesystems offers powerful and robust drive solutions for all requirements of heavy duty logistics. A 35% increase in centre distance and a 60%

reduction in drive weight due to optimal use of installation space: With its new MaxxDrive XD series, the drive specialist sets new standards. The new “family member” in the Nord industrial gear unit portfolio is precisely matched to the requirements of lifting equipment. The parallel arrangement of the

gear stages and the thus increased centre distance were specially developed for the usual layout of lifting gear drives for cranes, where gear unit, motor and rope drum are arranged in a U-shape. The increased surface area of the XD also ensures an optimum heat dissipation.

TREOTHAM’S IGUS DRIVEN E-CHAIN SYSTEM FOR LONG TRAVELS Almost no limits on long travels, high dynamics, long running times – these are the characteristics that distinguish the innovative igus drive-chain. Described as the world’s first energy chain with its own drive ensures significantly longer running times on extremely long travels because hardly any push/pull forces act on it. Across the globe, rail-mounted automated stacking cranes (ASCs) in ports are just one of the applications that benefit.

The drive-chain design concept works as follows: drive boards are mounted on the outer radius and drive the e-chain in the lower run. The bottom rail has motor-driven friction wheels on the sides and rollers on the top. When the crane sets off, the friction wheels also start their motors. The lower run travels along the rail in a synchronised movement, during which hardly any push/pull forces from the moving end act on the chain links.

PORTABLE 3-A DAIRY DUMPINGCONVEYING SYSTEM Flexicon's new manual dumping system with integral conveyor and separate dust collector is suitable for dairy powders, pharmaceutical products, and contamination-sensitive bulk foods. Designed and finished to 3-A sanitary standards, the system is comprised of a manual dumping station with surge hopper, flexible screw conveyor and support boom on a castor-mounted frame, plus a separate mobile dust collection system that can be configured alongside or remotely.

Ready to plug in and run, the mobile system can serve multiple functions throughout the plant, and then be rolled to a wash-down station and storage area. A dust hood with hinged lid is mounted to the floor hopper with quick release clamps, and is equipped with an internal baffle and air vent port for efficient dust collection. A support tray allows operators to stage manual additions from hand-held sacks before dumping material through a grate fabricated of powerful rare earth Neodynium-iron-boron magnet material.

A delegation of key stakeholders including the New Zealand Minister of Energy and Resources, Dr Megan Woods, was recently given a high-level tour of Fuso headquarters in Japan and provided with an overview of the manufacturer’s zero emission truck and bus program. The Ministerial delegation also included five business partners with expertise in the energy, sustainability and hydrogen sectors, as well as secretaries and advisors. The attendees took advantage of an invitation to Fuso’s headquarters in Kawasaki, where they were hosted by Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation chairman of the Board, Kazuo Matsunaga, and his team of high-level executives and product experts. The delegation was given a factory tour and an in-depth overview of the Daimler Truck and Fuso pathway to a complete range of battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles. The Fuso eCanter, the world’s first series production fully-electric truck was also front and centre, with delegation members given an opportunity to experience what it is like to drive this zero emission pioneer. Investment in innovation propelling mid-sized manufacturers Off the back of a challenging year to date, a new snapshot looking at the performance and priorities of some of New Zealand’s mid-market manufacturers shows a brighter business outlook and increased economic optimism for the months ahead. Commissioned by MYOB, the latest Mid-market Snapshot reporting on a sample of mid-sized manufacturing businesses, revealed that while 44% of the New Zealand manufacturers surveyed reporting a drop in revenue on a year ago, more than a third (39%) say they’ve seen an increase – and further insights indicate that this upward trajectory is expected to continue. Nearly 7-in-10 local manufacturers polled predict that their revenue will be up in the next 12 months, and more than half (55%) surveyed say they have more work in the pipeline for the next three months than they would usually expect at this time. Jo Tozer, MYOB head of Go-to-Market says the increase in positive sentiment around both business performance and economic outlook is encouraging as we head toward a new year. “While we know mid-market businesses tend have continued to have a slightly more positive economic and business outlook compared to their SME counterparts, the past few years haven’t been without their challenges. “The ongoing repercussions of the

Food & Dairy sector focus Servicing of Plant & Parts suppliers Excellent systems & processes Sales of $1.3M + Extensive Vendor assistance available

pandemic, the increased cost of goods, disruptions to supply chain and increases in the cost of their business overheads are all issues manufacturers we surveyed said are impacting their business at the moment and ones they expect to continue to effect things over the next six months,” she adds. “However, with our insights showing many are investing in future-proofing their business, an increase in adaptability, productivity and resilience that comes from doing so will be helping to bolster their confidence as they look to capitalise on increased sales volumes in the months ahead.” In terms of what’s propelling these businesses forward, many manufacturers surveyed have seized the opportunity to do things differently. Almost two thirds (64%) of the New Zealand manufacturing businesses surveyed said they have invested in innovation for their business over the past 12 months, with key areas for investment by this group including: new software solutions to manage their business (52%), more automation of manual processes (51%), improving production lines (41%) and tightening or improving supply chain (39%). Building on this momentum, innovation also remains firmly on the radar for the year ahead with more than 7-in-10 surveyed saying that innovation is a key priority for their business. For these businesses looking to

innovate their operations in the next year, the majority (51%) plan to tighten or improve their supply chain, while almost half (49%) want to improve their production lines, and 44% want to expand their services to customers and clients. “For businesses that want to thrive in any environment, innovation is absolutely key and the manufacturers we surveyed clearly recognise the meaningful impact changing their business approach and investing in innovation can have on their performance moving forward,” says Tozer. In addition to driving their own changes through innovation in their businesses, many local manufacturers appear to be gearing up for changes in the industry more broadly. More than half (59%) of New Zealand manufacturers polled for the Snapshot believe the industry will rapidly change over the next five years. Amongst the biggest changes likely to shape the industry over the next five years, the most common responses from this group included: More competition (85%), more automation (62%), more customisation (62%) and the prospect of bigger businesses buying up smaller businesses (45%). However, change is already upon the sector, with three quarters of mid-sized manufacturers surveyed stating they’ve seen a rise in the need for customisation – a trend which is likely to influence business approaches moving forward.

The recent Australian Federal Budget allocated more than AU$100 million to critical minerals, leaving New Zealand in its dust, says Straterra CEO Josie Vidal. "The budget includes AU$50.5 million over four years to establish the Australian Critical Minerals Research and Development Hub, and AU$50 million over three years to fund grants to support early and mid-stage critical minerals projects," Vidal says. "In making the announcement the Albanese Government said it is accelerating the growth of the critical minerals sector and supporting clean-energy technologies as part of efforts to reach net zero. This money is in addition to $50 million previously committed to six key minerals projects across Australia. "Meanwhile, the New Zealand Government has been promising to do something about critical minerals since 2019, but we have seen nothing. The contrast between the Australian Government’s support for minerals and the New Zealand Government’s lack of support is stark. "Australia is acting on research from the energy industry, including the International Energy Agency, and preparing for the massive demands on critical minerals to fuel a low emissions future. They also understand the demands for mined minerals will increase as the infrastructure is built to both mitigate the effects of climate change and to create affordable, accessible, readily available energy sources. She says that Australia has signed two international partnerships to develop and secure global supply chains for

critical minerals - with the United States in July this year and with Japan. They are watching the situation in Ukraine and understand how important it is to shore up supply of the minerals that are going to keep the world running. They are not called critical minerals for nothing. "At our conference Alan Broome, who has 40 years’ experience in the metals mining and energy industries, spoke about the role New Zealand can play in the rise of critical minerals. He stressed the importance of having a plan, as they have in ‘the UK, in Germany, in Japan, in Korea, in the United States - everywhere except here (NZ)’. "The money the Australian Government is putting into research makes us envious when in New Zealand, crown research agencies are rejecting research and development grants for the minerals sector because they might cause ‘significant adverse public sentiment’. What is more likely to upset the public is when we have no reliable energy supply, or when sea level rise takes out their homes because we don’t have resilient infrastructure. Politicising research is a disturbing trend. "I know it upsets New Zealanders to think Australia is better than us, but on the move to a low emissions future, they are. They have a plan. "We are supposed to be innovators, world leaders, punching above our weight - but we are totally missing one of the biggest opportunities in the world, securing supply of critical minerals," Vidal says. Straterra is the industry association representing New Zealand minerals and mining sector.

director, Kurtis Andrews, thanked Dr Woods for taking the time to visit Fuso and learn about its exciting zero emission journey. “Fuso New Zealand is keen to play a central role in assisting New Zealand achieve its mission to decarbonise the freight transport industry while managing the ever-increasing freight task, so we are excited Dr Woods and the other key stakeholders were prepared to invest the time in learning about this pivotal technology,” says Andrews. “We have an exciting story to tell, whether it be the eCanter that is already helping some of New Zealand’s leading companies reduce their carbon footprint or our future zero emission models that are currently being developed by Fuso and Daimler Truck.” “For customers wanting to get on with developing their eDelivery strategy, and not in a position to wait until at least 2024, we do still have some stock of the current generation eCanter, which has been snapped up by organisations such as Mainfreight, Bidfood, Toll Global Logistics, Fulton Hogan and PlaceMakers. “Those leading New Zealand businesses see eDelivery as a critical proposition for their future operations and have recognised that the sooner they understand the technology, the better placed they will be to implement it across their businesses in the medium-term.”

Kiwi steel construction business marks massive 50-year milestone Auckland-based structural steel contractor D&H Steel Construction notched up 50 years in business in 2022. The privately-owned business has delivered structural steel fabrication and erection services to some of New Zealand's biggest building and infrastructure projects since 1972. Today, D&H prides itself on being one of New Zealand’s most preferred

structural steel contractors. It has earned multiple industry awards and national recognition. D&H Steel managing director Wayne Carson says celebrating 50 years is quite an achievement. “We’re proud of this milestone and we’re looking forward to the next 50,” he says. To mark the occasion D&H is celebrated with staff, clients, partners and

suppliers in late October. The company’s history can be traced from its humble beginnings in a sheep shearing shed at Span Farm in West Auckland through to today, operating out of a purpose-built, hightech fabrication plant in Henderson, Auckland. It hasn’t been an easy ride but strong leadership over the years has helped D&H Steel to endure many

N E W S storms. The first 50 years of business have seen D&H Steel face significant challenges only to emerge stronger than before – from the early union days and 1987 share market crash to the GFC and Covid-19 pandemic. All the while the company has kept pace with the everchanging construction industry – often enough it has been at the forefront of those changes. Another challenge was educating the market about the value of structural steel so D&H Steel could grow its market share. In the early 1990s, structural steel had less than five percent of the construction market. So, D&H Steel joined the Heavy Engineering Research Association (HERA) and Steel Construction New Zealand to support the work that these industry organisations were doing to educate designers and procurers, and to raise the bar across the entire industry. “Today, structural steel enjoys more than a 50% share of the multistorey construction market nationwide,” says Carson. D&H Steel has been influential in the success of the wider industry. For example, it was D&H in the 1990s that proposed introducing a levy on structural steel. The funds would go on to support the steel industry’s growth, the development of its technical and quality assurance capabilities, and its ability to train consulting engineers. D&H Steel has been behind many of the largest structural steel projects across Auckland, including Westfield shopping

malls, Auckland Airport developments, Lion Brewery, Deloitte Tower, Viaduct Events Centre, Park Hyatt and the Puhinui Station Interchange. Projects outside of Auckland include the Tauranga Cargo Sheds, University of Canterbury Regional Science and Innovation Centre, and the replacement Kopu River Bridge. The steel fabrication industry is changing with advances in technology and D&H Steel aims to keep pace with the times. “As a business, we’ve been focused on keeping ahead of the market and have been early adopters of technology and systems,” says Carson. “New technology is very much on our radar. The use of robotics and advances in manufacturing techniques is something we’re keeping an eye on. We are also embracing the Industry 4.0 pathway, which is about making smarter decisions in real time based on available data. It’s advancing quickly.” D&H Steel is a Kiwi business success story, with people at its heart. The company features many long-serving and multi-generational employees going back 10, 20, 30 and even 40 years. It’s big on family, community, diversity and supporting its staff to grow. The company has grown from being a hands-on and dirty trade to a sophisticated and professional operation with a high level of expertise and knowledge. “We aim to maintain that momentum in the next 50 years,” says Carson.

Engineering New Zealand chief executive Dr Richard Templer welcomes the release of the revised National Seismic Hazard Model, saying it provides much deeper scientific knowledge about the shaking hazard presented by earthquakes in New Zealand. The model, which has had its first update since 2010, calculates the likelihood and strength of earthquake shaking that may occur in different parts of New Zealand over specified periods. It was released today by GNS Science, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and Toka Tū Ake EQC. “Engineering New Zealand acknowledges the significance of this collaboration in delivering important seismic data for New Zealand. “I’m really pleased engineers were involved in this update. Along with regulators and insurers, we anticipate all New Zealanders will benefit from the new data.” No changes to regulatory settings have

been made as a result of the model’s release. However, Engineering New Zealand and its technical societies are working with MBIE to understand how the new information may be applied and incorporated into future Building Code updates for new designs, and whether the seismic hazard used for seismic assessments for buildings not covered by the earthquake-prone building system should be reviewed. “Engineers and clients should continue to use existing design standards and refer to the Interim Advice on the National Seismic Hazard Model from the Structural Engineering Society New Zealand, New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering, New Zealand Geotechnical Society and Engineering New Zealand,” says Templer. “We support MBIE taking a measured and considered approach to any changes to regulation,” says Templer. “Similarly, we encourage engineers to take time with the data and start thinking about what it might mean for future designs.”

Eg 10 workshop staff is $108 per week • If you use manual time sheets, to record workshop staff times on their jobs 10 workshop staff for example will cost you $775 per week = $37,975 per year, in lost chargeable staff time to fill in daily and admin cost daily to rekey to produce. If you replace your manual time sheet system with Empower you will save $667 per week saving you $32,683 per year. • Supplying NZ engineers and other manufacturers for 17 years • Available to you on request: info pack and free trial software • Engineering Client Short Videos on youtube.com. In Youtube search: Empower Express Sheetmetal, Empower Delta Stock Crates ... • 90% of engineers using tablets on the workshop floor and the Empower Software App achieve a 20% to 40%+ reduction in time on jobs – therefore a 20% to 40%+ reduction in labour cost on jobs. • An Engineer with 10 workshop staff is projected to increase production by 80 hours per week, therefore increase revenue by $6,000 per week and (80 hours by $75 per hour overhead cost), therefore increase revenue by $294,000 per year. This $294,000 per year is largely additional profit because overhead costs have been incured in existing production. Your 10 year investment $2.94m additional revenue, largely additional profit.

ONE STOP CUTTING SHOP Kiwi-owned and operated company invests in machinery, expands operation and capacities.

T

he investment warranted the visit, and the time spent talking about the new bit of kit. But within minutes of arriving at the impressive and expansive multi-site facility it was clear that this is a company that doesn’t shy away from getting the right tools for the job… or the right tools for the next job. In fact, investment in machinery has been a guiding principle of the business for over 25 years. And although the TruLaser Tube 7000 is the latest new kid on the block for the North Shore business it will be by no means the last. Before we had even finished running through what one piece of machinery would mean for the company

14

November 2022

the conversation turned to how they were making room for more machinery, with a new LVD Easyform-9 320/45 pressbrake already on route. It’s one of many examples of how the company adds greater versatility to its offerings through upgrading machinery; one of the many features of this highly-anticipated machine is sheet assists and the ability for heavier parts to be folded rather than manual-labour lifting of panels. Expand, upgrade, improve – that’s just how they roll.

A HISTORY OF MACHINERY EVOLUTION If there is one thing that One Stop Cutting Shop has been known for since the original

company opened its doors in 1998 is investment; with new systems, updated processes, design services and staff training ensuring that the Silverdale business remains at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. Pete Herd started the small factory operation under the name North Shore Plate Cutting, and even from those early days Herd and the CNC profile cutting team began to seize opportunities and establish the direction of the company that has put it on the right track – invest in the type of machinery to do the job right, the first time. If you don’t have the right machine, get it. Once you get it, expand upon it. It wasn’t until 2014 that the operation started to trade

under One Stop Cutting Shop following an amalgamation of several businesses. By then laser cutting machines, plate cutters, press brakes and more meant that high-tech machinery and equipment littered the landscape and by the beginning of the year the company featured four laser cutters. In 2018 – still continually evolving – two fiber lasers arrived and that new speed and cutting ability “added a new dimension” to the business, says Herd. Today, gas cutting, water cutting and a folding division has meant that OSCS is a true one-stop cutting shop, just as the company name states, that is capable of turning around exceptional high-quality standards of work from scratch,

his hands on a machine that has an astonishing cut capacity of 254mm (10-inches) – one of, if not the greatest cutting capacity currently in New Zealand. With this machine, he is capable of processing parts not only up to 254mm in diameter but with a wall thickness of up to 10mm in mild steel meaning maximum productivity is on offer. With the Trulaser Tube 7000 fiber, the solid-state laser has a broad processing spectrum. The laser represents fast and flexible processing and Tanner and OSCS has yet another string to the bow with capabailites of nine metre loading with eight metre finished parts. This is a significant productivity advantage for OSCS, particularly

in thinner materials. The open machine concept gives the TruLaser Tube 7000 optimal accessibility during loading and unloading. Due to the Central Link interface, the machine is also optimally equipped for Industry 4.0. The open machine concept and intelligent beam guard provide the perfect combination of optimum safety and the best accessibility for the operator. This means that even individual tubes can be loaded efficiently, and parts removed at an ergonomic working height. The machine can process bevel cuts of up to 45 degrees and – thanks to RapidCut – the high feed rates of the solid-state laser come into their own even

on smaller contours. This is a significant productivity advantage, again in thinner materials. With the new technology package for tapping, additional machining processes such as flow drilling and tapping are integrated into the machine. Automation means OSCS and its customers can benefit from reduced parts handling and a smaller chance of errors. The swivel-mounted conveyor system can be used for small lot sizes and special profiles. Step rollers support the tubes while also moving them sideways, and adjust automatically to various diameters. The support rollers position and hold tubes in place without damaging materials and the self-centring clamping

system with continuous sensor monitoring adapts to every tube geometry. The nett result is that the machine provides OSCS with high part precision; second to none.

INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY WITH KINETIC’S K4000XMC PLASMA CUTTING SYSTEM OSCS looks for advantages in every decision-making process and this flows through to the machines it selects to get the jobs done. When it came to the heavy-duty K4000XMC combination plasma Continued page 18

With multiple functions in a single machine, there’s no need for complex fixtures, multiple setups, or moving work pieces from station to station and that’s something plasma cutter operator Jesse Roelse appreciates every single day. Thanks to “legendary Kinetic accuracy”, this machine gives OSCS a competitive advantage that will make the business stronger and provides an unparalleled level of flexibility. Roelse says he can “plasma to 50mm, oxy to 100mm, tap to 20mm and drill to 50mm,” with the machine featuring a 3.6m wide x 12m long table and BT40 spindle with 24 tool stations. Automated tool changes can occur in less than three seconds while cutting, milling, drilling and more can happen in the same step.

The unit is feature packed, but what OSCS and its customers truly benefit from is speed and accuracy with “best-in-class” plasma and machining capabilities. The combination plasma cutting, milling and drilling system is in a “class of its own”.

MAINTENANCE 101: WHY AIR FILTER MAINTENANCE IS CRITICAL

T

hey’re so small that they are easily overlooked. However, the importance of air filters – and properly maintained air filters at that – cannot be ignored. Explaining the benefits of replacing filters on a factory floor, Robert Taylor, product specialist for SMC Corporation Australia New Zealand says that filter maintenance is essential for the following reasons: 1. Efficient equipment: “Proper filter maintenance ensures that machinery and processes run efficiently and economically.” 2. Goodbye contaminants: Filter maintenance helps keep contaminants out of cylinders, valves, and other pneumatic components. “This guarantees a longer service life and enhanced product reliability.”

Taylor adds that its common for manufacturers to resist the replacement of filters due to dreaded downtime. “For the most part (and depending on the system), this is a general misconception. An air system that runs 24/7 should have a bypass system around the filters, allowing for maintenance downtime to occur without disrupting the air supply,” he says. “And for those manufacturers that shut down a system at the end of the day (or week), this is the ideal time to replace air filters with minimal disruption to operations.” “When it comes to the cost of maintaining filtration,” says Taylor “one needs to carefully consider the cost of the downtime or lost production that occurs when a component fails during production, through air quality issues. “ Taylor explains that air filters are

all designed with a recommended service life. “For SMC’s range, we recommend two years or a 0.1MPa pressure drop as a key indicator for replacement. We have, however, seen shorter time spans in applications demanding longer service hours - so it depends on the environment.” For instance, a dirty or dusty environment will see the filter becoming contaminated more quickly. A few simple signs that one should look out for to know when filters need replacing: “SMC offers a handy visual-cue red and green indicator on the top of the filter that indicates when the pressure drop through the filter is higher than the optimum level. In addition, pressure sensing options can be added to SMC’s modular range for remote monitoring of pressure differentials across filters.”

"AN AIR SYSTEM THAT RUNS 24/7 SHOULD HAVE A BYPASS SYSTEM AROUND THE FILTERS, ALLOWING FOR MAINTENANCE DOWNTIME TO OCCUR WITHOUT DISRUPTING THE AIR SUPPLY."

“If not, look for signs that the machine may be slowing down or not performing as it should be; it will become quite evident in the increase in pneumatic component failures.” In addition, Taylor says that a discolouration in the silencers installed in the valves could also be a dead giveaway. “In the case of very fine oil mist filtration you may start to ‘smell' or feel the oil in the exhaust air.”

IN THE PIPELINE… NAUTILUS UNVEILED: WORLD’S FIRST SUBSEA PIPELINE INSPECTION/REPAIR ROBOTIC TECH

R

ovula, a subsidiary of AI and Robotics Ventures (ARV), is an expert developer of an end-toend advanced solution platform for subsea inspection, repair, and maintenance (IRM) on offshore oil and gas production platforms. ARV, together with Kongsberg Ferrotech, a subsea robotics company based in Norway, have officially released ‘Nautilus’, described as the world’s first subsea pipeline inspection and repair robotic technology, after its successful pilot trial in subsea IRM services for offshore operations under PTTEP group. Nautilus is now ready to serve customers and partners in both the public and private sectors of the oil and gas exploration and production industry. Recognised by two world renowned innovation awards, Nautilus is slated to take oil and gas exploration and production industry to the next level by increasing IRM operational

efficiency while significantly reducing time and cost of subsea pipeline maintenance. Dr Thana Slanvetpan, general manager of AI & Robotics Ventures says, “Nautilus is our pride. For over four years, Rovula, ARV, and our partner Kongsberg Ferrotech, a leading IRM subsea robotic innovation from Norway, have developed this technology together, intending to increase operational efficiency, reducing time and costs of subsea IRM operation in the oil and gas industry, which traditionally requires specialised skilled divers to board a pressurised submarine diving deep under the sea to perform the tasks which have limited expertise in this field and there is also a life-threatening risk with high operating costs and can take a prolonged period of 7-14 days for each repair operation. With the current subsea IRM operation, there are possibilities for mistakes that can cause accidents or cracks and damages to the pipeline leading to chemical leaks that pollute marine ecosystems and nearby

WEL DI NG

COLD WIRE TIG WELDING – SMART AND SIMPLE TIG cold-wire components are available now for Fronius iWave. The pioneering innovation lies in its intelligent control. With the patented new TIG DynamicWire welding package, even amateurs can achieve perfect TIG welds with ease. This is because the dynamic wire control always selects the right travel speed. The process adapts to the welder, not the other way around!

T

IG welding represents the top tier of welding processes and demands skill as well as years of practice – or does it? “All the new features that we’ve packed into the iWave coldwire components as well as the corresponding software solution make TIG welding significantly easier,” says Manuel Rumpl, head of strategic product management industrial welding solutions, Fronius International GmbH. “Thanks to TIG DynamicWire, welders can focus all their attention on the arc and the welding system regulates the optimal wire speed at all times.” The iWave power categories from 300i to 500i can be upgraded to the TIG cold-wire system. The TIG DynamicWire welding package is ready for use immediately by means of software activation and can also be retrofitted to existing iWave

systems at any time. The innovative advantage, says the company, of Fronius DynamicWire compared to a conventional continuous wire feed lies in its automatic selfregulation. The welding system actively adjusts the wire speed to the welding behaviour, torch position, and current conditions, even automatically compensating for component tolerances of up to 30%. The result? Perfect welds every time, says Fronius.

PRECISE AND USERFRIENDLY

During development of the coldwire system, no detail was too small for Fronius when it came to ensuring that welders could work optimally with minimal steps and adjustments. The wirefeeder is set once and then remains in a stable position.

The ergonomic and flexible tungsten holder is particularly lightweight as it is produced using material-saving aluminium 3D printing. There are also no disturbing vibrations at the torch handle, as – unlike with comparable solutions – the mechanical forward and backward motion of the wire has been dispensed with entirely with the new TIG DynamicWire coldwire welding process.

CHANGE THE TUNGSTEN ELECTRODE AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON With the Tungsten Fast Clamp system (TFC), welding expert Fronius is bringing out another new patent. A single touch of the button releases and clamps the tungsten electrode in the spring-loaded clamping sleeve. Like the lead of a mechanical pencil, the electrode is changed in a matter of seconds.

This system can now also be mounted on existing torch bodies.

SELF-REGULATING, TIME-SAVING, AND RESOURCE-CONSERVING In times of skills shortages, iWave complete with cold-wirefeeding and TIG DynamicWire can help all TIG novices and those with less experience achieve a great welding result and fast. Selfregulating parameter settings and characteristics as well as a compensatory active wirefeeder provide the necessary safety and ensure a high level of quality. Since the wire does not continuously move back and forth during intelligent TIG cold-wire welding, even wear parts such as the torch body, torch cap, and clamping sleeve experience reduced abrasion and last longer than comparable solutions.

The patented Fronius-TFC electrode clamping system (TFC =

THE TIG DYNAMICWIRE WELDING PACKAGE IS READY FOR USE IMMEDIATELY BY MEANS OF SOFTWARE ACTIVATION AND CAN ALSO BE RETROFITTED TO EXISTING IWAVE SYSTEMS AT ANY TIME. THE INNOVATIVE ADVANTAGE, SAYS THE COMPANY, OF FRONIUS DYNAMICWIRE COMPARED TO A CONVENTIONAL CONTINUOUS WIRE FEED LIES IN ITS AUTOMATIC SELFREGULATION.

PUMPING UP SUPPLY

ATLAS COPCO CENTRAL VACUUM STATIONS SUPPLY PACKAGING LINES AT TÖNNIES BEEF

The Tönnies Group has built its bovine animal competence centre in Badbergen, Lower Saxony, Germany. The cuts of beef are vacuum-packed in thermoforming and shrink-wrap machines, a process that has become more efficient than ever following renovations at the site: Now, energy-saving Atlas Copco variable-speed vacuum pumps are used to create vacuum conditions at two central stations.

W

hat used to be a mixed slaughterhouse has become a "bovine animal competence centre". For decades, cattle and pigs were slaughtered and butchered at the same time in Badbergen on behalf of other companies. In 2017, the Tönnies Group took over the site and decided to base its entire slaughtering operation in Badbergen – up until that point, this

had taken place at the company's main site in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. In 2020, Tönnies Beef reopened the site after extensive conversion and renovation. The Group invested around 85 million euro in the building and state-of-the-art technology at this site in a small town in northern Lower Saxony, between Oldenburg and Osnabrück. The slaughtering, butchering and finishing processes are based on the latest cooling

technology, machine-based butchering and highly automated picking and shipping lines. Several hundred tonnes of meat leave the site every day and 95% of the animal – practically everything – is utilised.

EFFICIENT SCREW VACUUM PUMPS PROVIDE FORMING, LOW AND FINE VACUUMS "The cuts weigh between 1.5 and

9 kilograms after butchering," says Waldemar Metzger, technical manager of Tönnies Beef GmbH & Co. KG in Badbergen. The cuts are vacuum-packed for various major customers. For this purpose, Tönnies has installed several packaging lines in the halls: Seven thermoforming roller machines and two robot-operated shrink-wrap packaging machines. Efficient Atlas Copco vacuum pumps are used in the systems to vacuum

packaging machines then automatically insert the cuts of meat into the tubular bags, which are cut to the correct size under a vacuum bell." Under the hood, all ambient air is then evacuated in two stages until the pressure is around 3 mbar (fine vacuum). "With the forming vacuum – or thermoforming vacuum, as it's also called – the plastic tray is formed by cutting the foil roll," he says. After filling the shell with smaller pieces of meat, the shell is "wed" to the cover film. The tool closes and seals the packaging airtight at 3 to 5 mbar using the fine vacuum. Sorting machines assign the individual trays and tubular bags to larger boxes, which are then used to pick custom boxes for customer orders.

EFFICIENT SPEED REGULATION REDUCES ENERGY REQUIREMENTS Metzger has been working in Badbergen for 20 years and has been part of the planning and execution stages of converting

the mixed slaughterhouse to a purely beef operation from the very beginning. This included the decision to purchase Atlas Copco variable-speed vacuum pumps. "As far as technology is concerned, being able to vary the speed of the GHS vacuum pumps is essential to us and saves energy," says the Tönnies employee. "Compared to fixed-speed machines, you can reliably cut down energy requirements by around a third – perhaps even by half, depending on the diversity factor." The controls on the vacuum pumps have a user-friendly plain text display, which also indicates the running hours and maintenance intervals. Since the Atlas Copco pumps can be connected directly to an exhaust system, it was possible to use air-cooled pumps. According to the manufacturer, this improves the climate of the room; it is no longer necessary to have the additional room cooling often required when using central vacuum systems.

One of the screw pumps supplies the forming vacuum for the thermoforming roller machines, which only require around 100 to 150 mbar for the forming process. The other vacuum pumps in this station are connected to the boosters. One of the pumps is redundant at any given time. This is also the case in the second vacuum station, which comprises five GHS 730 VSD+ pumps that remove the air from the shrink bags at the Cryovac lines. BREATH OF FRESH AIR… LAB-TESTED ENVIROKLENZ AIRBORNE VIRUS REMOVAL NEUTRALISES MULTIPLE HEALTH AND DUTY OF CARE RISKS

A

laboratoryvalidated air filtration system is being introduced to Australasia to help building and business owners, managers, specifiers, designers and fitout specialists fulfil duty of care and OH&S obligations to protect workers and visitors against the spread of viral and other airborne health hazards within interior spaces. The EnviroKlenz Air System Plus

from Clean Stream Technologies – which kills virus’ multiple times smaller than the Covid-19 virus – is already proven in service in US health and major hospitality environments responding to the Coronavirus pandemic and to other airborne health challenges, including different virus’, bacteria, pathogens, pollution, and seasonal allergens that affect millions in both countries. “This quality, German manufactured system is engineered as a major step up from mass market air

purifiers,” says Scott Whittaker, general manager of Clean Stream Technologies. “It is highly effective because it goes much further than standard purifiers by combining medically proven ultraviolet UVC germicidal irradiation with safe and effective earth mineral technology originally developed for the US military and still used today to destroy chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals.” It is a top gun product, he says, which is also highly effective against pollution and smoke

intruding from the street or immediate environment. “It also provides a highly visible reminder to customers, visitors and staff that the enterprise whose space they have entered is concerned to protect their health and wellbeing,” says Whittaker. “This can be a strong incentive for customers to prefer your accommodation – or for staff to recognise that you are taking active steps to protect them against multiple health hazards, including hay fever (allergic rhinitis), which affects about 18 per cent of people

in Australia and New Zealand. It is effective against: • Chemicals and odours from cleaning agents, water damage or renovations that cause indoor air quality problems • Mould or mildew from water damage in bathrooms or ductwork in hospitality, commercial and industrial ductwork • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids or from carpets, furniture and other contributors to low IAQ scores • Demand for severe allergy-friendly or allergy friendly accommodation and working environments. “Sometimes the issue is excluding potential carriers of risk factors such as contagious conditions; sometimes the issue is to exclude the risk factors such as vehicle pollution, bushfire smoke and widespread allergens including pollen,” says Whittaker. The compact, self-contained, wheeled unit runs quietly, producing around 55 to 60 decibels, depending on the model. It cleans 93 square metres to 99.9% disinfection in under 18 minutes.

When used in conjunction with a HVAC system, the EnviroKlenz Air System Plus turns over the air around 17 times an hour, which is equivalent to once every 3 minutes and 52 seconds. The US-patented medical grade system has been third-party Intertek laboratory tested to demonstrate its removal of 99.9% of airborne viruses down to 0.025 microns, says Clean Stream Technologies, which is a subsidiary of the longestablished Enware brand, widely respected as a supplier to hospitals, laboratories, health facilities, architects and specifiers for social infrastructure, including schools. The laboratory testing is for a broad spectrum of viruses, including SARS-COV-2, and the size of virus’ against which it is effective are multiple times smaller than the Covid-19 coronavirus. Robotics Plus, described as a specialist in the design and build of robotics, artificial intelligence and autonomous machines, unveiled its demonstration vehicle at FIRA USA 2022, a California-based event dedicated to autonomous agriculture and agricultural robotics solutions for the North American market. Steve Saunders, co-founder and CEO of Robotics Plus, says its world-class team worked alongside growers, researchers and best-inclass technology suppliers to deliver the unique modular architecture for its multi-purpose UGV, which can operate in a range of environments. “We’ve created a flexible agricultural platform with the power to adapt to different crop types with tools for various applications, providing year-round automation benefits and maximising machine utilisation. “To adapt and thrive in a changing world and create a sustainable and competitive future in the agricultural and speciality tree crop sector – growers and orchardists need automation that solves real-world problems, reduces reliance on increasingly costly and hard-to-find machine operators and provides data-driven insights for informed decision-making.” Saunders says that for automation to be adopted, it must also provide a good return on investment. “Our multi-purpose vehicle replaces tractors and other tools. But, it does much more than just replacing labour – it’s loaded with intelligence to improve efficiencies,” he says. The first application for the technology is intelligent spraying. The system intelligently varies the flow rate to ensure spray efficacy whilst reducing inputs. Spray rates and airspeed is controlled in zones and responds as the sprayer moves along orchard or vineyard rows. The highly manoeuvrable UGV has a small footprint and unique steering configuration, incorporating electric steering and independent motors, which increases productivity – allowing significantly more ground to be covered than machines which turn on every second row or greater, depending on row configuration. The UGV can be deployed in a range of applications in various crop types with a minimum row spacing of 1.8M/6ft. Dr Alistair Scarfe, co-founder and CTO of Robotics Plus, says its hybrid electric diesel UGV delivers

outstanding performance in the field. “Electric drive motors give superior torque and control, whilst a Tier 4 diesel generator means the vehicle can operate for extended periods. Fuel consumption is minimised by electrically driving all systems, including tools. Regenerative braking and high-capacity batteries also extend efficiency and range. “In addition, the vehicle’s lightweight design and intelligent all-wheel-drive system, with independent wheel motors to ensure grip and control – while significantly reducing ground compaction to protect the soil,” he says. The vehicle has been designed from the ground up to be modular and easy to service. With no hydraulic, gearbox or differential fluids to be managed, operators can easily keep their vehicles running if a part fails by simply swapping out modules when needed. All of this is designed to reduce downtime and complexity for growers. Robotics Plus has partnered with best-in-class technology suppliers, including Yamaha Motor Company, Autonomous Solutions Inc, and Croplands, to significantly increase the robustness and support for the product in a demanding environment such as agriculture. Saunders says by taking a partnership approach, Robotics Plus has created a best-in-class platform for the agriculture industry. “We’ve benefited from our partner’s deep knowledge and access to high-quality technology components. In addition, growers can deploy Quantum sprayers with configurations adaptable to various crop types, growing formats, and heights.” Robotics Plus has developed multiple autonomous systems for use in agriculture and automation for intelligent fruit-packing to address significant industry issues, including global labour shortages, rising costs, and yield security. In addition, its robotic automatic log scaling machines are transforming port logistics with improved safety and productivity. Robotics Plus’ fast-growing team developed the modular platform UGV at its Tauranga base, with extensive testing in New Zealand and the US in various environments and applications. Robotics Plus investors include Yamaha Motor Company and New Zealand’s ACC Impact Fund.

Environment

TOMORROW’S MOBILITY FROM TODAY’S WASTE PRODUCT The world is drowning in plastic waste. The huge piles in landfill sites are growing fast. Some of this plastic ends up in the ocean, enters the food chain, and becomes a danger to marine, animal and human life. Therefore, it is most urgent to move away from the traditional linear economic model and migrate to a fully circular economy. To help this transformation, igus the motion plastics specialist has been developing and investing in ideas for recycling plastics for many years. The company recently presented a world first: The concept of a robust, durable urban bike made entirely of plastic, from frame to bearings to toothed belt. One special feature of this new bike is that the recycled version will be primarily made of reused plastics originally “single use”. “The plastic in rubbish dumps around the world is becoming a valuable resource,” explains Frank Blase, igus CEO. He first had the idea of a bicycle, now known as the ‘igus:bike’, on a beach while on holiday. In conversations with employees of a bicycle rental company on the beach, he found out about their major problems with beach bikes. These were continuously exposed to sand, wind and saltwater and sometimes only lasted three months before they had to be replaced.

Maintenance and replacement are often expensive and timeconsuming in this industry. The igus:bike is easier to own than any other bike. Owners can leave the single-speed bike outdoors in all weather and clean it in seconds with a garden hose. “As all components are made of plastic, no part of the bike rusts, even the gears – bicycle gears made of plastic were unthinkable for a long time,” says Blase. Lightweight, lubrication-free highperformance plastics are used in all parts of the bicycle, from two-component ball bearings in the wheel bearings to plain bearings in the seat post, brake levers and pedals. All of these components have integrated solid lubricants and ensure lowfriction dry operation – without a single drop of lubricating oil. This ensures that sand, dust and dirt cannot accumulate. These igus tribo-plastics have been used successfully for a long time and are currently used in more than 70 industries: in automobiles, tractors and robots. And they have also had many fans in the bicycle industry for decades. They have been proving their worth there for a long time in such applications as mountain bikes and e-cargo bikes. SPEAKING OF ROBOTICS PLUS…

• Robotics Plus designs and builds technologies that give you the power to adapt. Technologies that adapt to your environment and help you adapt as needs change. • The company’s Āporo fruit packer gained huge attention and is designed to improve reliability and accuracy in packing. From the infeed to the orientation of the fruit, contained within a robust stainless-steel frame – the apple packer does this effortlessly and is a single belt unit or double configuration. • Robotics Plus also introduced the world’s first robotic log scaling machines, available as

a fixed or mobile scaler. Previously, log scaling and other checks were a slow, sometimes dangerous, manual process. Now, every log can be scaled accurately by machine, as they arrive at the port, without the risk to workers. • The company started in a small shed surrounded by orchards and farms allowing it to test products and prototypes that solved real word problems and now has its head office in Tauranga. • ACC’s Impact Investment Fund took a share in Robotics Plus to improve the wellbeing of those working in some of New Zealand’s most dangerous industries.

In the igus development laboratories, eight developers are currently working on all moving components of the all-plastic bicycle. Ball bearings, brakes, sprockets, gears and drives are being coordinated by Andreas Hermey, the development manager for energy chains and in close cooperation with the bicycle start-up MTRL from the Netherlands. Tried and tested existing developments from igus were adapted to the new application. The result is smooth-operating, quiet, durable plastic components that give suppliers all over the world the opportunity to benefit from the igus:bike platform. The new igus:bike platform offers bicycle manufacturers

all over the world the opportunity to jointly advance this technology. The platform continuously shows the status and progress of all components and explicitly invites market players to participate. “We want to enable the bicycle industry to produce plastic bikes,” says Blase. The platform is intended to become a contact point for manufacturers who want to build a plastic bicycle and for all manufacturers of suitable components, such as plastic frames, wheels, drives, and pinions. The platform is already hosting initial corporate collaborations. One example is Helix.eco for recycled plastics. Many more will follow. Another partner is MTRL,

a Dutch a start-up that has successfully put 400 bicycles with plastic frames and wheels onto the Netherlands’ roads. “Founders Johannes and Benjamin Alderse Baas are partners who share our vision completely,” says Blase, who is himself an investor in MTRL. “Together, we are refining the all-plastic bicycle.” The bicycle start-up will begin production and sale of a children’s model and an adult bicycle for cities by the end of this year. The German launch will be in early 2023. Other versions, such as an e-bike, have also been planned. In the future, the all-plastic bicycle is to be available both in a variant made of new plastic and in one made

entirely of recycled material. The first prototypes, successfully produced and tested, were made of material from old fishing nets, for example. MTRL is planning manufacturing facilities near plastic landfills around the world. “From ocean plastics to motion plastics – the igus:bike concept has what it takes to become a high-tech ecological product,” says Blase. “We have lots more ideas, such as installing condition monitoring using igus smart plastics. That would let you use your smartphone to see how many more thousands of kilometres the bike can take. That will hopefully convince many people who are still sceptical about plastic.”

through current team members; Adam Humphries, Rick Gardner and Maria Garcia, each of whom are previous recipients of Keystone Trust scholarship awards. Fulton Hogan’s Australian-based New South Wales site engineer, Maria Garcia, says she is pleased the business has offered resounding support to the trust as a sponsor. “Receiving a Key Partner Scholarship gave me a lifechanging pathway into the industry – through the trust and the support of its affiliates, I gained opportunities to meet industry leaders, receive mentorship,

and broaden my knowledge through workshops, site visits and networking events. “The trust also provided me with the opportunity to undertake a summer internship with TSA Management which was a key stepping stone in my career,” Garcia says. Fulton Hogan’s East Coast (NZ) Contracting Divisional Manager, Rick Gardner, fondly remembers his experience as a student with Keystone. “It was bloody amazing,” he says. “The financial input was significant, but I benefitted hugely from networking opportunities which

were so valuable for an 18-year-old lad from Gisborne. Those meetings and conversations with industry professionals really opened my eyes. “I remember the interview process so well. I had to borrow a tie from a teacher at school because I had never worn one before. There were applicants from flashier schools from Auckland and Christchurch, and I remember thinking – I don’t stand a chance here. “But I won a Keystone Trust Study Award, which supported me while I worked at Fulton Hogan and studied to achieve a diploma in civil engineering at the Waikato Institute

of Technology (WINTEC),” he says. For Adam Humphries, Fulton Hogan New Zealand’s national asset manager, the partnership’s true value is in supporting the next generation of talent to realise their potential within the industry. “Capacity constraints and skill shortages have been welldocumented across the building and construction sectors, and we are 100 percent behind any initiative or avenue that helps to mobilise young people and provide them with pathways into rewarding careers that benefit the industry and the broader community,” he says.

Future Innovation OVERTUBE: A GREAT PLAN OR AN ENGINEERING ABOMINATION FOR AUCKLAND? Auckland Mayoral candidate Ryan Pausina has designed a theoretical extruded tube as a potential solution for a second bridge crossing. Pausina has become interested in the engineering issues faced by Auckland and has felt a second crossing is one thing that is missing. He says he also understands the process of wealth loss heading out of Auckland due to fuel purchase from cars that needs to be targeted. Generally, cars consume fuel at a cost of about $100 to $200 per week from someone’s pay packet, which is money that is then extracted out of the Auckland region. Therefore, reducing fuel use is a profit-making exercise. “Can a large tube extruding machine be constructed? Would it be able to make continuous bends in the lengths? Can

extrusion of a second bridge crossing be carried out on a barge to float a kilometre long section on top of the water and then to sink some of the chambers to submerge the structure into place?” says Pausina. Big questions to ask, however the gains are large, he says. Dredging a trench for the tube he says is a low-cost construction method for a second crossing, an exercise that could cost 0.3B as opposed to 3.0B of other methods. It is certain that going under the harbour is the only solution as it is an energetic advantage and a shorter distance to travel. Going over would require a climb of almost 50 metres vertically above the mast of yachts and then back down again, going under would only require a distance of going down 14 metres and then up 14.

“An extruded tube with internal sections creates a very stable lattice requiring less bracing. There is no waste of materials with extrusion and no assembly costs as what comes out is the finished product.”

November 2022

“If possible, the winnings are large, an extruded tube with internal sections creates a very stable lattice requiring less bracing. There is no waste of materials with extrusion and no assembly costs as what comes out is the finished product.” The tube in theory would be called the OverTube and be used all throughout Auckland city to serve a completely new transport system and labyrinth. With the tube being elevated up on columns three metres above the pavement is a new idea, also with placement at times along the centrelane of the road, above the streams and estuaries to connect the city with a network of OverTubes. “The advantages are for the taking. Tamaki Drive and many pavement areas have fallen into disarray while attempting to accommodate alternative transport that we call E-modem along with more space for cycles. Accommodating pedestrians, motor vehicles, cycles and E-modem on the same plane is an impossibility no matter which way we design or colour code the pavement. The roads are getting smaller in proportion to provide surface area, now are too small. The pavements are filled

with traffic barriers every 100 meters or less. These include constant intersections between cycles and pedestrians, road intersections and traffic lights that stop all: bikes, walkers and cars altogether. Other obstacles for cycles and E-modem are numerous and include storm water drains, storm water channel, curb stones and yellow blind walker judder bumps that almost throw people off.” The solution is to make a new OverTube transport network above the street. Bicycles are a proven technology, being completely unchanged in design for around 100 years makes them a completed technology. The same can be said about E-bikes, they are extremely successful and are a permanent fixture of the future both as modem and from an energetic perspective. Removing joggers, cycles and all E-modem from the street level is a giant win and is a solution to some big issues like Auckland’s traffic congestion and carbon neutral targets. “What are the positives? The overTube is transparent, letting light through the structure, avoiding light being lost it wouldn’t shade the street level below. It would also not require its own lighting system, as it would receive light from street lighting. It would serve as rain covering for pedestrians below like how shopfronts awnings do. It is a network completely free of roading and traffic obstacles. saving large amounts of time lost at traffic lights that completely stall flow. It provides elimination of oncoming collisions with the opposing direction of E-bike traffic with a dividing barrier that also serves as a main structural element. The OverTube also eliminates collision with cars, walkers, dogs and cats, reversing cars from driveways, light poles, manholes, rough road chip surfaces, earthworks events, tree roots, hazards and foul weather. “ Is the OverTube the logical solution for Auckland? Can it be used by a wider group of people, younger than the minimum driving age that is required for the road? Food for thought. We’d love to hear your feedback.

Tech Talk ENGEL: DRY CYCLE TIME ABOUT 10% SHORTER The better the motion sequence, the higher the performance. In the form of iQ motion control, Engel has developed a smart assistance system which automatically optimises the acceleration phases to support faster movements. This is already possible for the viper linear robots, and now it is being introduced for the injection moulding machine. In highperformance applications, this can significantly shorten cycle times and provide a competitive advantage. In high-speed applications, the time the injection moulding machine takes to open and close the mould is a material part of the cycle time. Like a robot arm, the moving mould mounting platen on the injection moulding machine does not simply open and close; instead it follows individual motion points. These points split the movement into phases and this is precisely where the key to optimisation lies. For each individual phase, iQ motion control software computes the optimum acceleration for the matching machine setting. The basis for the calculations is the configured mould stroke and the clamp force, but also the mould weight. IQ motion control optimises autonomously at the push of a button. The software optimises the acceleration phases, increasing the speed of the platen by doing so. This

allows for faster part removal and, in turn, a shorter cycle time. The injection moulding machine does not require additional energy for this performance boost. Higher connected loads are not needed. The software simply leverages the existing potential of the machine and the drive technology to the max without increasing the load on the machine and the drives. When adjusting the opening stroke or during a mould change, for example, the motion ramps are often not optimally readjusted due to pressure of time, or a reserve is configured due to the different mould weights. IQ motion control makes this a thing of the past. No matter which parameter changes, the best possible trajectory is always computed, utilising the physical limits, to achieve the shortest possible cycle time. Engel is demonstrating how iQ motion control works in practice at its stand in Hall 15 in Düsseldorf with a sophisticated packaging application. An Engel e-speed injection moulding machine is producing 125-ml round containers from rPET with a 4-cavity mould using thin-wall injection moulding and in-mould labelling. These containers are used for packaging foods. And the cycle time is accordingly critical for the producer’s competitiveness. Analysis of the cycle time has shown that mould opening and closing accounts

for a particularly high proportion of the total cycle time in this highperformance application. Without iQ motion control the time required for the mould movement is 1.27 seconds. With iQ motion control enabled, the machine only needs 1.12 seconds for the mould movement. This is equivalent to time savings of 12%. The reduction for the total cycle time is 5% , with a drop from 3.15 to 3 seconds. IQ motion control will be included

in the standard feature set of all new electric toggle-lever injection moulding machines in the Engel e-cap and e-speed series and can be retrofitted to older machines. e-cap and e-speed injection moulding machines are used in high-performance applications in the packaging and medical technology industries. Thanks to iQ motion control, these machines achieve a dry cycle time that is around 10% shorter.

Reaching parts of the component that are difficult to access and keeping the tool assembly as short and compact as possible is critical for profitable metal cutting. The modular system Coromant EH enables you to get the most out of your cutting edge. Get the required reach and accessibility with shanks and modular adaptors. In short overhang applications, it is possible to double your productivity with integrated machine adaptors.
